He played the Stampede this year, just returned from a run of shows in Grande Prairie and preps for a residence at the Watering Hole at the Dawson Creek Stampede and Exhibition. He says it was great to see fans back out. “It is great to see the fans back out and singing back to you, and be able to get up and dance.” During the down time LeBlanc started working on his home studio and putting that together – as well as some writing. LeBlanc is a watering hole regular and will be playing some new tunes. “We’ve got some new stuff for an album – we’re going to road test them and get a new album out early next year.” LeBlanc says his writing process has changed over the last year. “I always used to right thinking about radio first and live second. This time around I thought about the live experience first – everything being about fun.” LeBlanc plans to hit the big Alberta and Western Canada festivals next year – but you can catch him this year at the Exhibition Watering Hole. The Dawson Creek Exhibition runs August 11 to 15.

Testing Wild Oats For Prepared by Calvin Yoder, Forage Seed Specialist (SARDA Ag Research/Peace Region Forage Seed Association) and Kristina Polziehn (Axiom Agronomy Ltd.) Wild oat resistance to Group 1 and in some cases Group 2 herbicides in Peace Region crops is not new but it does appear the issue is growing particularly over the past few years. Continued use of herbicides with the same mode of action combined with some poorly competitive crops due to extremely wet weather in 2020 and now drought conditions in 2021, have provided opportunities for wild oat resistance to develop. We are fortunate in the Peace Country that we are a little behind the rest of western Canada in terms of this problem but that will change quickly if problem fields are not identified and management practices are not implemented. This time of year is the first step in identifying issues and determining what herbicide chemistries the wild oats are resistant to. Patches of wild oats across a field that had previously been sprayed in the spring with a wild oat herbicide is generally a good sign there may be a problem. Checking historical herbicide use (ie the last 5-10 years) will also help decide whether the issue is herbicide resistance or just poor performance of a herbicide in the current year. As harvest approaches now is the time to collect wild oat seed from suspicious patches in fields.
Collecting Samples (as per guidelines set by the Crop Protection Lab in Saskatchewan) • Collect only mature, healthy seed from the suspect plants that have appeared to have survived the herbicide application. Can use an insect sweep net to collect or just collect by hand. • A minimum of two thousand seeds per herbicide subgroup is required. When there is a need for several groups of herbicides to be tested, the number of seeds should be increased accordingly. • Seeds MUST be mature. Green or diseased seed will not germinate properly and will impede the diagnosis or make testing impossible. • Do not submit seed that has been treated with a pre-harvest herbicide (ex. glyphosate). • The sample MUST NOT contain any stems. • Seed should be clean with as little foreign material as possible. • Seeds MUST be dry before shipping. If the sample arrives mouldy or becomes mouldy during processing, it will not be tested. • To dry seeds, allow them to air dry for a few weeks on paper. Place them in a paper bag for shipment to the laboratory. • Seeds should be packaged in paper bags or other breathable material, rather than plastic. Laboratories There are two main labs in western Canada

Herbicide Resistance that test for herbicide resistant weeds. Their web sites will have information on submitting samples and what herbicides they are able to test for. The price for testing will be around $120.00/herbicide test. Seed samples must be submitted by the end of January. Contact the labs directly for more information. For growers that have not previously submitted samples for testing, choose the worst fields or worst patches and submit enough seed to conduct a number of different herbicide tests. The herbicides tested for largely depends on what herbicides were commonly used on the field in previous years, in addition to the herbicide used in the current year, and herbicides that may be potentially used in future. If Group 1 wild oat herbicides like Horizon (clodinafop) or Puma
Advance (fenoxaprop) have regularly been used in wheat or barley, then test for one of them. Testing for Axial (pinoxaden) and Centurion (clethodim) would also be a good idea, to understand whether the mutation for these Group 1herbicides exists already If there is concern about Group 2 resistant wild oats then testing for active ingredients such as thiencarbazone (Everest/Sierra) and imazamox (products used in peas) would be good start. Knowing the field history will help decide what herbicides should be tested for. As growers, utilize older products like Avadex (Triallate, Group 8) again as part of herbicide resistance management, they will need to monitor for the presence of these resistant populations as they can develop cross resistance with Group 1 and 2 wild oat. While the cost for testing a number of different herbicides can add up, the results will provide good information on how fields can be managed to combat herbicide resistant wild oats. A Resistant Wild Oat Action Committee consisting of scientists and agronomists from across Western Canada has been formed to help increase awareness and provide information on managing herbicide resistant wild oats. Their website is weedscience.ca/ wild-oat-action-committee/.

The benefits and risks of spaying and neutering your pet
Written by Dr. Zoe Ross For many years, veterinarians and pet owners have been aware of many of the benefits of spaying and neutering pets and traditionally these procedures have been performed when patients are around 6 months of age. In recent years there have been some studies done that have both confirmed these benefits but have also brought to light that in some breeds of dogs, it might be beneficial to the patient to wait until they are older to perform this surgery. It can be quite challenging to sort through and understand all of these studies and also to recognize that some of the

studies have some faults in their design that make the results a bit questionable. Ongoing research and investigation is continuing but the purpose of this article is to highlight the benefits and risks of neutering or spaying pets as well as the reasons behind our current recommendations on the age of spaying or neutering. Historically the main reason behind spaying and neutering pets was for population control and to help manage the extremely high numbers of pets that were being surrendered to shelters and euthanized because homes couldn’t be found for them. Prior to the 1970’s euthanasia rates were very high (US statistics were that 100 cats and dogs euthanized per 1000 people) and in 1971 in Los Angeles 110 835 dogs and cats were euthanized. COVID and the changes that came about with it, resulted in higher than normal pet adoption rates but it remains to be seen if this continues to be the case. As a veterinarian that has to euthanize animals, I certainly don’t want to see young healthy animals have to be euthanized because they can’t find a home and so I still feel that population control is an important consideration. It has also been recognized for a long time that unspayed female dogs have an increased risk of developing mammary cancer and this risk increases with each heat a female dog goes through. There is also quite a high incidence of a condition called pyometra developing in unspayed female dogs. Pyometra is an infection in the uterus that occurs and can be life threatening and require emergency and expensive surgery to treat. The incidence of this can be as high as 24% in intact female dogs. The same risks can occur in female cats as well. Female rabbits also have a very high risk of developing cancer in their uterus if they aren’t spayed. Male dogs that are left intact are at quite a high risk of developing prostate problems as they get older. The most common disease associated with this is benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis where the prostate gland becomes enlarged and inflamed. This can result in the dog not being able to urinate or sometimes even defecate properly. Intact male dogs also have a slightly higher incidence of developing prostate neoplasia as well. There are however a slightly increased risk of some conditions developing in large breed
dogs that are spayed or neutered young. Some studies have shown that especially large breed dogs may have a slightly higher chance of developing some other types of cancer such as osteosarcoma and hemangiosarcoma if they are spayed young. Also there may also be a slightly increased risk of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in large breed dogs that are spayed young. Female dogs that are spayed can develop urinary incontinence. The other benefit to spaying or neutering dogs or cats is to help with behavior problems that can occur. Male dogs and cats both tend to roam or wander more and may have higher risk of being hit by a vehicle or getting into a fight with another dog or cat. Male cats that aren’t neutered also may start to spray urine which can be quite unpleasant, especially if it occurs in your home! If you have ever been around a female cat who is heat you know that they can be very vocal and needy when they are in heat and they also want to get outside and go find a handsome male which can be quite undesirable. There may be some risks associated with surgery. Patients are put under general anesthesia to be spayed and neutered. General anesthesia can have some inherent risks associated with it however with the development of newer anesthetics, good monitoring during the procedure, and the option of pre anesthetic bloodwork these risks are usually well managed and minimized. Any surgical procedure can have complications such as infection but with good sterile technique and making sure the pet doesn’t lick or chew at the incision after surgery these complications are uncommon. Studies are continuing to evaluate various risks and benefits to spaying and neutering and to determine the ideal age at which this procedure should be performed. In general, the current consensus is that it is beneficial to spay or neuter dogs and cats. Cats and small breed dogs are generally still spayed or neutered around 6 months of age. In general, we recommend waiting to spay or neuter large breed dogs until they are closer to a year of age or even slightly older than this. With so many factors to consider when choosing whether to spay or neuter and at what age to do this, it is best to consult your veterinarian to get a specific recommendation for your pet.

Glenn Stewart; Natural Horsemanship Clinician and Horse Specialist Our The Horse Ranch website an interesting place for you to visit and mosey around with a bit of information and inspiration. You’ll learn how you can begin or further your Horsemanship education hands-on joining us at Camps we host at the Ranch in Fort St. John and at Clinics offered across Canada and
the US. Annually we host Horsemanship Learning Adventure Holidays – in 2020 – you can join us in Costa Rica in January and new for 2020 – in August we are hosting “Putting Principles to Purpose” an 8 days of immersive learning and challenges where you can experience and
improve your horsemanship with a great mix of good times to soak in the scenery at the Ranch – 160 acres designed with horses and our students in mind. Check out our calendar for dates, details and to book. Our Horses Development Program is thoughtfully designed in Stages helping you learn in practical ways, for those unable to attend in person – you can complete while you are at home – check out the DVDs which you can purchase online and get started right away. We’ve asked the question “Do you remember why you got into horses?” It is our belief that everyone whose lives have been touched by horses had a plan, a vision or an inspiration of how good it could be. Or maybe it was just the warmth of their manes, the wonderful smell or the way you felt better about everything whenever you were around them that got you started. Whatever it was, we hope you remember and better yet, you are living it. If you are we would like to be a part of that experience. Perhaps you’ve forgotten or gotten far away from the original dream, why you got into horses in the first place. We would love to to remind you of what that was and bring that dream into your reality. The possibilities are endless and best of all, we’ve found a way that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary results with horses. For everyone who has been a student in the past, we would like to thank you. What we do wouldn’t be possible without you. For those of you we have yet to meet, it would be an honor to be a part of your experience with horses in some way. For all of you, we hope you will be inspired to come visit us at The Horse Ranch, our home where we live our dream with horses. Sincerely, Glenn Stewart

GROUNDBIRCH 4-H MULTI CLUB’S ACHIEVEMENT DAY & SALE SATURDAY, AUGUST 7TH, 2021
“With increasing costs and tighter margins, maintaining a high level of productive efficiency is needed to be profitable. Providing a balanced nutrition program is a big part of the management plan to meet these goals.” Barry Yaremcio
Kiskatinaw Fall Fair Grounds, Sunset Prairie, AB
With limited pasture growth this summer, stretching the grazing season without harming the perennial forage stand is a concern. In the drought conditions we are experiencing, forages mature more rapidly than in a normal year. Fibre levels increase rapidly. This reduces energy content in the grasses. With higher fibres, the stems become coarser and the cows are less willing to consume the entire plant of some species.

BENEFITS OF WEANING CALVES EARLY
Rotational grazing will help to maintain forage quality. Creep feeding calves when they are more than 50 days of age will also reduce total forage requirements. Supplemental feeding dry hay is another option, but is it better to save the hay to feed over the upcoming winter to the lactating cows? The key consideration is how to reduce the number of pounds of high quality pasture grass to keep the cows in good condition and have the calves maintain a good growth rate. Calves that are 150 days of age have a fully functional digestive system and can be weaned. This accomplishes two things. First, the nutritional requirement of a dry cow is 25% lower than for a lactating cow. Second, calves that are placed in a dry lot pen, are not consuming the limited pasture forage.
FAMILY EVENTS: Bouncy House | Dunk Tank Face Painting | Loonie Games Silent Auction NO ALCOHOL PERMITTED | NO DOGS PERMITTED NO ATM ON GROUNDS
Weaned calves can be fed a hay or silage along with rolled grain. A 500 pound calf requires a ration with a 15% protein content to develop bone and muscle. The amount of energy needed depends on the rate of gain. Adding an ionophore such as Rumensin or Bovatec will improve feed efficiency and daily gain. Building a ration to obtain 2 to 2.5 pounds of gain per day is attainable. With a lower nutrient requirement, the cow is able to maintain or improve body condition prior to winter. A cow that is 200 pounds lighter (one body condition score) than optimal does not have the fat layer under the hide that is used as insulation against the cold. A cow that is thin going into winter requires approximately 1400 pounds of additional hay to keep warm. This year with hay prices anticipated to be higher than last year, this could increase winter feeding costs by $100 or more per cow.

Helping Indigenous agriculture grow in B.C. Indigenous leaders and subject matter experts on agriculture and food from throughout British Columbia are working with the Province to increase Indigenous participation in the sector and strengthen Indigenous food systems. The B.C. Indigenous Advisory Council on Agriculture and Food (IACAF) is the first of its kind in Canada, working to advance reconciliation, respect for Indigenous rights and supporting selfdetermination goals in the agriculture and food sector. The council is working with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries on a three-year strategic plan to advance shared priorities. “The B.C. IACAF will bring more diverse voices and perspectives to help shape the province’s agricultural industry for future generations,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “With the advisory council’s guidance, I look forward to working together to create a more resilient food system in Indigenous communities around B.C. and building strong, vibrant Indigenous economies that reflect Indigenous peoples’ rights and distinct cultures, priorities and values.” Advisory council members have a shared commitment to advance reconciliation through meaningful change rooted in the implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action in the context of the agriculture and food sector. “Currently, many aspects of our Indigenous food systems are not within the mandate of British Columbia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. Our food security and food sovereignty are deeply entwined with the ecological health of our Indigenous territories, which are increasingly impacted by the effects of climate change and associated threats,” said Chief Byron Louis, IACAF chair, Okanagan Indian Band. “Our worldviews, knowledge systems, relationships with our lands and territories, and inherent rights to self-determination, including to maintain, control, protect and develop our cultural heritage and economies, guide IACAF’s work, and are essential to the realization of the objectives of this council.”

The feeding damage that these insects create look like shot holes, but the larvae can consume the entire leaf except the veins of the leaf. They will also eat flowers and have been known to damage pods in various stages and strip the stems. The threshold for this species is 100-150 larvae/m2 larvae on immature and flowering canola, and 200-300 larvae/m2 on podded canola. If the threshold is met, you may want to apply a control for it. To help manage this species there is a chemical management available, but this species also has a large range of other insects that prey on them. If you have any questions, please contact us at pest@bcgrain.ca! And keep an eye out for our next article. Tory Snider

Good Afternoon! I want to talk about Diamondback Moths today. This is a small moth that is often found in Brassica crops, and here in the north, a common pest to Canola, as it is one of the preferred crops of the larvae. Diamondback Moths are carried on winds from the Southern United States each spring. When they appear varies from year to year, however they usually appear in Early May. Pheromone baited traps are used to attract the males, with the data obtained being useful to researchers in tracking the moth’s movement across the prairies. Diamondback Moths can have up to 3 generations a year, with the female laying anywhere from 30-200 eggs each time. The larvae are a small green caterpillar around 8mm long, with silken cocoon found on undersides of leaves being used to pupate into an adult moth.

CES Honours John Deere For X Series Combines In Robotics Category OLATHE, Kan. (Dec. 16, 2020) — John Deere (NYSE: DE) has been honoured in the Robotics category of the 2021 CES Innovation Awards, which recognize outstanding product design and engineering in consumer technology products. This is the second straight year John Deere has received a CES Innovation Award. John Deere is a CES Innovation Award Honouree for its new X Series combines that are equipped with ActiveVision camera technology that helps farmers see inside the combine’s grain tank and observe tailings so they can monitor the condition of harvested grain, right down to individual kernels. This technology is fueled by proprietary algorithms and provides farmers with information to make critical decisions in the moment, and to gather data over time to inform future actions. “John Deere is honoured to receive this award as it highlights our ongoing commitment to agriculture, innovation and technology,” said Jahmy Hindman, chief technology officer for John Deere. “The award recognizes our efforts to build cutting-edge smart machines, systems, and solutions that unlock customer economic value through enhanced precision, automation, speed and efficiency previously not possible.” The X9 1100 is the largest John Deere X Series combine and helps farmers harvest faster without risking grain loss or quality. These machines can thresh, separate, and clean more bushels per hour—or harvest more acres per day—even under unpredictable conditions. Compared with previous models, the X9 1100 can harvest up to 70% more wheat per hour. The artificial intelligence, computer vision, in-field machine-to-machine communication, integrated sensors and self-driving capabilities included on the X Series help make this increased harvesting productivity possible. For example, the combine can automatically adjust itself to adapt to changing conditions to run at peak levels while helping farmers with in-the-moment decision making. The combines also monitor themselves and enable farmers and John Deere service technicians to manage concerns remotely, thereby minimizing downtime and supporting profitability. The CES Innovation Awards program is an annual competition honouring outstanding design and engineering in consumer technology products. The Robotics category highlights programmable or otherwise intelligent machines capable of performing specific tasks or replicating human movement or interactions. Products are reviewed and scored by a panel of judges comprised of designers, engineers, and technology media. Products are also evaluated on their engineering and functionality, aesthetics, and design; and what makes the product unique and innovative. “Technology and innovation are at the core of how John Deere helps farmers overcome uncertainty and improve efficiency,” said Hindman. “To make our customers the most profitable and sustainable farmers in the world, John Deere challenges the status quo to deliver smart, highly autonomous and connected machines, like our X Series combines that unlock opportunities for them to make more informed and accurate decisions at scale, which in turn supports the greater goal of feeding a growing world population.” CES 2021 will be an all-digital, virtual format this year to allow the tech community to safely share ideas and introduce products that will help shape the future. CES showcases companies including manufacturers, developers and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, technology delivery systems and more.

The Government of B.C. is launching a Regenerative Agriculture and Agritech Network (RAAN) that will help farmers adopt the latest technology to increase profitability and environmental sustainability, while strengthening the provincial food system. To help advance and inform the establishment of the RAAN, the Province will be hosting a virtual agriculture and agritech conference, RegenBC, from Sept. 28-30, 2021. The conference will feature guest speakers and presentations from local and international experts in the private sector and academia, and farmers who are focusing on the adoption of agritech and regenerative agriculture. “We are working to help farmers harness the latest and best in agri-technology, so farms can adopt or expand regenerative farming practices that are good for the environment and respond to the longterm challenge of climate change,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “I’m excited to bring everyone together for our RegenBC conference, so we can hear the various experiences and success stories involving regenerative practices and agritech and learn more about how they can fit into the future of farming in B.C.” Agritech, such as advancements in robotics and computing, can also help farmers by improving efficiency, reducing labour shortages and strengthening animal-welfare practices. RAAN will contribute to a more resilient food system and help farmers adapt to and mitigate climate change. Many B.C. farmers are already using these practices to build successful businesses. In North Saanich, Brackenhurst Farm has successfully implemented new technologies on their dairy farm. These include a robotic milking system for the farm’s 100 cows that is sought out by cows, reduces labour and improves health-safety practices. The farm also has a manure-management system that sustainably recycles nutrients to fertilize grazing land and protects waterways and nearby forested lands. “My family has been farming for four generations,” said Mickey Aylard, owner, Brackenhurst Farm. “Caring for the land ensures we are able to carry on our family farm legacy. As a young producer, making investments in innovation and technology is key to planning our farm’s future.” The new network will also support innovation in B.C.’s growing agritech sector. For example, Terramera is a B.C.-based agritech company that has developed machine-visioning software and other advanced technologies to make agriculture more productive, sustainable and regenerative. The RAAN will help them form connections with farmers and bring new opportunities to the agriculture sector.

“Through climate-smart regenerative agriculture, we have a remarkable opportunity to support farmers and bring together solutions inspired by science, technology and farming traditions to address local food security, nutrition, farm profits, resiliency and climate change,” said Karn Manhas, founder and CEO, Terramera. “I am excited about the opportunity the RAAN can create for farmers, rural communities and agritech companies, like Terramera, to come together to create jobs and economic growth while turning back the clock on climate change.” The RAAN is a mandate commitment for the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries.

ON THE
OPEN ROAD A Little Bit of Everything (Part 1) – Exploring Northwest Alberta’s Local Eats
Story and Photos by Rumble Alberta Influencers Rheannon Green and Tannis Baker, Food Tourism Strategies Inc. When you look at Northern Alberta, one thing is for sure – it is massive. A far cry from the metropolitan areas surrounding Calgary and Edmonton, where the next town is only a few minutes outside the city limits, Northern Alberta neighbouring communities can sometimes take upwards of one hour to reach. As we prepared to head out from Calgary to our starting point in Edson, we knew two things to be true: the days were going to be long, and we had always better have a full tank of gas (just in case). As we made our way into Edson, it was clear that the town is heavily focused on drive through traffic and overnight visitors. Like many of Alberta’s small towns along major highways, there seemed to be an abundance of chain restaurants, gas stations, and hotels aimed at getting you on your way again quickly. After a long day of driving, we headed straight to our first stop, the Lakeview Inn & Suites – Edson Airport West. We had been driving through the rain most of the day, and there were no signs of it letting up, so hitting the hotel to get cleaned up and get situated was top priority. The hotel is quaint and is clearly a favourite of industrial and oil patch workers, given the lineup of large trucks outside. Inside, the lobby is lovely, and the staff is very friendly and keen to share information about the town.Rocky Mountain Big Horn Distillery is a small, family-run craft distillery located about 10 minutes north of Edson in Yellowhead County. The entrance is framed by beautiful, branded gates, so it is impossible to miss the entrance. The driveway up to the taproom
and distillery is mostly dirt, so if it is a rainy day like we had, could be difficult for those riding in on two wheels. Their lineup of spirits and liqueurs use locally sourced ingredients, including grains from a nearby farm and herbs grown right on their own patio. The drive to Hinton took just under an hour, and by then, we needed to re-caffeinate. We headed to The Old Grind, a local favourite with not only great coffee (roasted in Jasper by Rocky Mountain Roasters), but an amazing selection of sandwiches, soups, sweets and more. You can tell it is a great spot to eat, as it had a revolving door of customers coming in for almost everything on the menu. The favourite of our visit was a French tortière, which uses owner Carl Widenmaier’s family recipe. A quick browse of the local art selection (including pieces by some of the staff), and we were on our way again. Our drive into Grande Cache revealed an important note: Mondays are not a great day to try to visit small town spots. Unlike in cities like Calgary where we are used to everything being open seven days a week, small towns tend to have a lot of restaurants and shops that are closed on Sundays and Mondays. While we were not able to try it ourselves, Yum Yum’s Café is a local ice cream shop that is absolutely worth the mention. Their ice cream treats are every child’s (or inner child’s) wildest dreams, from ice cream nachos to mini donut milkshakes to ice cream flights. They even have an adorable patio space so you can enjoy some fresh mountain air while you eat. While in Grande Prairie, we could not pass up visiting Fourteen 14 Food Co., an amazing lunch and brunch spot that serves up simple, fast, and delicious sandwiches and more. They are huge proponents of local, working
R0011490554
with nearby farms and producers whenever possible. The “Uncle Joey” is one of their most popular sandwiches, which is like a Cubano and made to perfection. Paired with the “Loaded Fries,” it was more than enough to share between two people, though it was so good you would not want to. Wash it down with a Grain Bin craft brew, or a Grizzly Paw soda, or with a coffee from local roasters at Mink Hollow Coffee. This might sound odd, but be sure to check out their washrooms before you leave – they have some amazing artwork all over the walls! Leaving Grande Prairie, we were once again back to rural Alberta. Small towns, open roads, and lots of farmland. The view shifted from greens to golden yellows as we made our way past farms and fields to arrive in High Prairie. Just outside of this tiny town is Shady Orchard & Winery, a small family-owned and operated fruit winery. Their retail store is absolutely beautiful, with vintage décor and a stunning display for their wines, and leads into their “Taproom,” a private space that can be booked for tastings and events, complete with a small menu of delicious bites to go alongside their selection of fruit wines. As we neared the town of Slave Lake and the end of the route, there was just one last spot to hit – the Slave Lake Grill (or SL Grill). When locals say they order from there up to five times per week, you know it must be good. The Slave Lake Grill is owned and operated by a lovely couple, Aeja and Woojin Park. They know almost all their customers by name (and by voice, for those who phone in orders). The menu is simple with about a dozen numbered items, and everything is cooked fresh to order. It makes the perfect quick lunch or dinner and should be enjoyed by a view of the lake.

Marker of Stone: short fiction from D.M. McGowan Marker of stone By D.M. McGowan 1 When I had seen eighteen winters, I left the village and traveled toward the rising sun for two days. On the third day I turned toward the home of the cold wind, and began a circle back toward the village. I searched for meat, but I found strangers. In the high land where the rivers flow in all directions, I began to hear strange, loud noises. Soon my nose could see the smoke of a poor fire, but the noises were nothing that I knew. I worked closer so that my eyes could tell my ears and nose what was causing this unknown thing. At a place where the bank of the river is quite flat, there were many strangers. There was a family of Carrier people, who live in that land,
and two of these strangers looked like the Cree people, that come from beyond where the sun rises. I had not seen these people until that time, but had been told of them. The other strangers were as nothing I had seen. They wore strange clothing, and all but one had faces covered in hair. Even the one whose face I could see had much hair under his nose. I had heard of white men who traded for furs along the shores of the Great Water, and saw that these men were like that. I knew then why I had not taken any meat during my hunt. These noisy strangers had chased all the game ahead of them. Moving back from their camp, I circled wide toward my village. I hurried to carry the news of the coming strangers to my father. I can not say why I began to travel from our village, for it was not a thing done by others. It made me different. There was a time when I was lost and very hungry and I ate the meat of a deer. From that day I was not the same as

my own people who only eat fish. I was still welcome in my father’s home, but all looked at me with different eyes. Because I was different, I knew of the strangers and could warn my father and the village. “Are they like the others?” my father asked, when I had told him of the noisy camp that I had found. “I was not yet of this world when the others came,” I reminded him. “Only my father can know if these men are like those who came from the sea.” I waited for my father’s third wife to serve me food, before continuing. “I have heard my father’s story of the yellow-skin men many times, and because of his great skill as a story teller, I do not believe these men who camp on top of the mountain are the same. One man has hair and skin the color of fire, and they all have much hair on their faces.” See next page

“Many strangers came cast up by the Great Water...” My father nodded, and then quietly smoked his pipe for the time it might take an eagle to soar across our valley. “When the others came, some of them were good, and some were bad,” he finally said. “One of our people who is a great boatman and fisherman is the son of the daughter of one of the good ones. One of our best carvers and his sister also carry the blood of a good man of yellow skin. “But many of the strangers cast up by the Great Water were not good men! All of their children have brought great trouble to our people. These children have been cast out of the village, or sent to the spirit world.” He paused, removed his pipe stem from his mouth, and smiled at me. “Perhaps those sent beyond have learned better ways. “From our neighbors, the Bella Bella, we have also heard many stories about the men who trade for furs on the Great Water. But we know that our good neighbors sometimes have bad memories, so we must see these things for ourselves.” He drew on his pipe before continuing. “You must return to this camp of noisy strangers that you have found. Offer to show them what they search for. You will spend time with them, then tell the council if they are good men, or bad men.” “What is it they search for?” I asked. My father shrugged. “Fish? Furs? Perhaps to watch the eagle soar? Strangers have strange ways!” “And if they are good men?” I asked.
My father shrugged again, puffing on his pipe. “We will show them kindness, and peace.” “And if they are bad men?” My father removed the pipe from his mouth, and his eyes became hard as winter wind. “Then we will show them peace!” I hastily finished my meal, and then returned up the Great River to the top of the mountain. There is a good place to camp at the top of the trail where I waited for the strangers, hoping to watch as they settled for the night. When they arrived, I could see they were fewer in number. The Carrier people had left them so that now they numbered ten white men, and two Cree. Since the making of camp is the work of woman, the Cree did not help but stood near one side of the clearing leaning on long sticks. When the strangers were busy with fire and cooking, I made myself known to the Cree. I thought I had given the warriors enough warning, but perhaps their long time with the hairy ones had dulled their senses. When I appeared they where much afraid, and pointed the long sticks at me. The Bella Bella told stories of sticks that held death inside. It was said these sticks would let death out, hidden in smoke. Only those who faced the stick would see death. From the camp, in a language my father had taught me, a voice cried, “Stop!” The Cree froze, still pointing the sticks at me, but glancing quickly at the one who spoke. Slowly I bowed toward the Cree, then

toward the speaker, who was walking toward us. This one who gave orders was the only one who wore no clothes made of animal skins, and had less hair on his face than the others. “I welcome you to the home of the people of the sea,” I greeted, in the language he had used. “You speak French!” he remarked. He did not sound happy to hear me use this language. I knew my use of this tongue would not be great for I only spoke it with my father who had taught it to me. But it was rude for this stranger to put the poor use of my father’s teachings before my face. Perhaps the stranger could see in my face that I was unhappy, for he bowed low and asked me to step aside. I did not understand this, but took a step to the side, and bowed in return. “Welcome to our camp,” he said. “Come, eat with us!” I nodded in agreement, but did not speak, concerned that my use of their language might offend them. When we had eaten much burned meat and drank a brew of boiled leaves, the chief of these strangers asked my name. When I told him, he looked puzzled, then said, “I will call you ‘Spirit’, because you appear from nowhere.” Continued on Page 45 He then told me his name, which I could not understand. Reaching out to his coat, I pinched the material and asked, “What is this called?”

Marker of Stone: from D.M. McGowan “How is it you speak the French?” Wool asked me. “I have learned from my father,” I replied. “This language was taught to him before he was a man by those who came from the Great Water. They also taught him another language, which I have not learned to speak.” I could see that Wool was made unhappy by what I said, though he tried to hide this distress while lighting his pipe. Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion next editon!

“It is cloth,” he said. “Wool.” “I will call you ‘Wool’,” I advised, “for you wear strange clothes.” Several of the strangers laughed, though I had returned their leaders insult with one of mine. Then the leader said something in another language, and those who had sat with faces of stone, smiled. I learned two things about these men. They had not been taught good manners, but did not seem to mind when these bad manners were returned. It also appeared that not all of them spoke this language taught to me by my father.

A neighbor’s ranch that had been in their family for generations was listed for sale by real estate as one listing of over 40 quarter sections. None of us neighbors wanted or could afford it all and the real estate listing finally expired with no offers. The owners then put the land up for sale with CLHbid.com. This suited us neighbors perfectly and in the end seven of us bought the land we each wanted. I was able to bid on and buy my land from my house. CLHbid gave us all notice of the sale and allowed all neighbors an equal chance. my land from my house. CLHbid gave us all notice of the sale and allowed all neighbors an equal chance. - James Baier, Buyer
