REGIONAL DISTRICT
Issue 8
| August 2021
In the
Spotlight Board meetings are open to the public After being closed to in-person attendance for over a year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Regional District board meetings are once again open to the public. The public is encouraged to participate in a board meeting in accordance with Communicable Disease Plan Prevention Plan protocols, which includes social distancing and sanitization measures. The meetings will also continue to be streamed live to the PRRD Facebook page with closed captioning capabilities.
Grant Writer Services program continues to assist community groups With non-profit community groups often relying on fundraising initiatives to fund their programs and projects, finding suitable grants and completing a successful grant application is a critical step in fostering a network of social programs and services in the region. The PRRD has partnered with Clear Course Consulting to offer the Grant Writer Services program, available to community groups located within the PRRD, including (but not limited to) not-for-profit registered societies or charities, church groups, community hall operators, partent advisory councils, and emergency services associations. If your project provides benefits to one or more communities in the region and you require assistance with writing a grant application, this program is for you!
Community leaders encouraged to sign up for the Grant Opportunities newsletter In addition to grant writing assistance, the program also delivers a monthly e-newsletter with the latest grant opportunities and writing tips. To learn more about the program or to subscribe, scan the QR code or call 250-784-3200.
Residents asked to be on the lookout for invasives
FireSmart program continues roll-out in the Peace region
The Peace region is a host to a diverse ecosystem of plants, animals, and microorganisms. However, the introduction and spread of invasive alien species is affecting Canada’s environment, economy, and society, including human health. According to the World Conservative Union, invasive alien species are the second most significant threat to biodiversity, after habitat loss. Once introduced, invasives become predators and competitors of our native and domesticated plants and animals which has significant impacts, especially for agricultural crops and forestry.
In its debut for the Peace River region, the FireSmart program has so far provided 91 property assessments to rural residents in partnership with the PRRD and Mammoth Forestry Ltd.
Do you know your Peace Region invasives? Download the Report-A-Weed BC app at reportaweedbc.ca or request an invasive plant identification booklet by emailing prrd.dc@prrd.bc.ca.
Next PRRD Board eetings:
The assessments, which are completely free and confidential, are just one of the components of the new program which aims to bring fire safety awareness to the residents of the Peace River Regional District. The feedback from residents has been very positive so far, says Craig Wilson, one of the consultants with Mammoth Forestry, mentioning that everyone who has done an assessment has seemed to enjoy it and learn something from it. The assessments will continue to be offered until September, and can be booked online by scanning the QR code or calling 250-784-1165. Residents are encouraged to visit firesmartbc.ca year-round to access an extensive library of information and resources to help get your home and property prepared for wildfire.

A 4H fun day for everyone The rainy weather didn’t dampen the efforts of the Groundbirch 4-H Multi Club this past weekend as they hosted their family fun day and animal show and sale at the Kiskatinaw Fall Fairgrounds.
They’d also like to thank all those that supported our club through our raffle draw. The winners were as follows: Side of Beef – Dana Bergen Butchered Hog – Matt Roberson Hutterite Turkey – Bruce Bueckert Outdoor Wood Cooler – Bonnie Lytle The club would like to recognize that none of this would’ve been possible without the hardwork of the members and their families or the support of our generous community. The club will resume again in the fall for another year of “Learning to do by doing”.

going to write about today. We don’t need to be tough on horses but we do need to be fair. We should be tough minded or strong in our resolve or direction. Then I got all the inspiration and more when one of my students shared his story around the morning campfire during Horsemanship Camp here at The Horse Ranch. Every morning we get together to talk about what we learnt the day before, answer any questions and prep for the day’s class ahead. Some amazing things can come out during these discussions and this morning was one of those days.

Some of you know about my horse Dealer. This horse is black gold in my eyes and is one of my demonstration horses. He is a dream to ride: smooth, athletic, strong and is soft and beautiful doing it. He wasn’t always that way. When I met Dealer, he had been to a trainer for 3 months and the trainer give up and said he can’t be trained. A friend of mine new about the horse and he suggested to the owner to call me to see if I could help. We set a date and Dealer was brought to Grande Prairie and put in a stall. When I went to get him the first day, I barely could get him caught in a 10 by 10 box stall. He would spin, put his head over the stall and do anything to keep from being caught. After a bit of coaxing, I got the halter on and tried to lead him to the arena. Every step I got forward he would back up two. You couldn’t catch him and he didn’t even lead after 3 months with the trainer. We finally got to the arena and started to fix things. He absolutely hated people and didn’t trust us, or anything we brought around him. When I got him to allow me to put the saddle on he decided it was time to get the saddle off and bucked so hard the dirt from the bottom of his foot hit the arena roof and is still stuck in the insulation. I had other horses there I was starting but Dealer got the longest session and after the second day I started to give him two session a day. He would buck until he played out then walk around catch his breath and go again. It took me 2 hours of warm up and ground prep the first day to manage a 2-minute ride. By the end of the 5th day, against my recommendation, the owner took

a ride on him, the ride went well but there was lots left to do and the owner said why don’t you take the horse. I said I appreciated it but no thanks. The work it would take to bring him around would keep me from riding all my other horses and I could get 4 regular horses going in the time I would spend on Dealer. I have a habit of taking horses that have had a real bad deal along the way and try to help them out the other side. I already had ones at home that I had said yes to that were a real handful. So we decided to put another 5 days on him to see how much more could be done. By the end of the second week, it took about an hour and a half to get him ready for a half hour ride. I worked him off another horse with lots of groundwork and worked on his confidence all the while trying to get him to see that he could trust people. I remember he never moved his lips the whole first week. They were pinched tight. He had a hard look in his eye and hardly ever blinked. After 10 days, the warm up was down to 15 minutes and I could go for a nice ride. But you had to do it right, leave no stone unturned as they say, or you’d be looking like a lawn dart. The owner came by seen the progress and watched as I loped across the field but still said “Glenn you should have that horse”. I had been warned earlier before he arrived that I was not to take that horse. I couldn’t resist, he looked and rode just like black gold. Yes, it was going to take some more work but he’s all horse and, honestly, he was teaching me. Every day, Dealer reminded me “get it right or you will eat some dirt”. Time goes by. Dealer hasn’t done much for a year or so and I needed a lease horse for a fellow coming from Manitoba this spring. The fellow has been here before and has been tough on himself but fair. He is always working hard trying to improve and understand more about the horse. Glenn Stewart is offering year round educational horsemanship programs at his facility near Fort Saint John, BC and is available to travel and conduct clinics. Importance of dental health in horses Written by Dr. Evany Forrest Routine dental care is essential to your horse’s health. Coming into fall and winter, when feed utilization is essential for maintaining weight and body temperature in our cold climate, your horse’s dental health is important to consider. Periodic examinations and regular maintenance, such as floating, are especially necessary today for a number of reasons. A) We have modified the horse’s diet and eating patterns through domestication and confinement. B) We demand more from our performance horses, beginning at a younger age, than ever before. C) We often select breeding animals without regard to genetic dental considerations. More advanced dental problems may require x-rays or extractions, and can require more than one visit to the clinic to correct. However, proper dental care has its rewards. Your horse will be more comfortable, will utilize feed more efficiently, perform better, and even live longer. FLOATING & PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE An oral examination should be an essential part of an annual physical examination by a veterinarian. Sedation is required to do a thorough oral exam, especially of teeth and soft tissues near the back of the mouth. Every dental exam provides the opportunity to perform routine preventative dental maintenance, and address issues early. Adult teeth continuously erupt throughout life and are worn down by chewing. Because the horse’s lower jaw is narrow, the lower rows of cheek teeth are closer together than the upper rows of cheek teeth. Due to this anatomy, the horse chews with a sideways motion that causes sharp points to form along the tooth edges. These points should be smoothed to prevent painful damage and ulceration of the cheeks and tongue. It is common for horse’s teeth to become excessively long or to wear unevenly. Routine examination and correction is especially important in horses that are missing teeth or whose teeth are wearing improperly. For example, if the cheek teeth are out of alignment, hooks can form. If the horse is missing a tooth, the opposing tooth can grow
too long. Untreated, these hooks and overgrown teeth can become long or sharp enough to cut into the gums every time the horse chews or is ridden. Over time, this can cause infection and extreme pain. Teeth like this may require several treatments spread out over months to slowly reduce the overgrowth without causing damage to the nerves inside each tooth. THE AGE FACTOR The age of a horse affects the degree of attention and frequency of dental care required. Consider these points: Foals should be examined when young to assess for congenital dental defects. Horses aged 2-5 have a lot of changes happening in their mouths during this time as caps are shed and adult teeth erupt. In total, 24 teeth are lost and between 36-40 adult teeth erupt! Dental checks every 6-12 months during these years help identify any teeth that are coming in abnormally, and facilitate treating abnormalities before the balance of the whole mouth is affected. To ensure there are no sources of pain that will impact their future training, sharp points, retained caps (baby teeth) and wolf teeth can all be addressed at this time. Mature horses should have dental exams annually to address sharp points before painful ulcers develop. Some horses have well balanced mouths and do well with floats every couple years, whereas most do best with annual floats. With dental imbalances, dental floats every 6mo is appropriate. It is much better to address minor imbalances early, as once a horse advances into their later teenage years the constant eruption of teeth slows down and some issues cannot be rectified. There is a finite amount of tooth to work with, and skipping early dental maintenance causes horses to be more likely to struggle with tooth loss and inability to maintain condition much earlier in their life than necessary. Senior and geriatric horses need extra care as they are more likely to suffer from periodontal disease, which is very painful and can cause severe infections and tooth loss if not treated. As teeth wear down and stop growing, the roots become short and teeth may become mobile. It is important to extract mobile teeth as chewing with a wiggly tooth hurts.
Regular floats are also important to look after imbalances and maintain as much functional grinding surface as possible- without grinding surface, the horse is unable to correctly chew hay and grass, and will need to be fed softened seniors diets in order to maintain weight. With routine care, horses can maintain functional teeth well into their 30s, whereas horses with poorly maintained mouths often begin to struggle in their early 20s (or even earlier!) In closing, as winter approaches it is time to consider when your horse’s teeth were last checked. If they may be in need of dental care it is best to do so before the cold hits to help ensure your equine companions stay comfortable and warm throughout the year.

Wound care, on the trail and at home
If headed out on the trail or an overnight trip, make sure you have a first aid kit along for your horse including basic materials such as clean gauze, bandage material, scissors and disinfectant. If your horses sustains a wound don’t panic & stop the bleeding. Apply direct pressure to the wound using a sterile or clean gauze or a cloth. Do not keep lifting the gauze to see if the bleeding has stopped as this disrupts clot formation—leave it on and wrap with some vet wrap. Get your horse off the trail where the wound can be assessed, cleaned and potentially take a photo to then contact your veterinarian!

“With increasing costs and tighter margins, maintaining a high level of productive efficiency is needed to be profitable. Providing a balanced nutrition program is a big part of the management plan to meet these goals”. Barry Yaremcio

CUTTING ANNUAL CROPS FOR LIVESTOCK FEED Timing is critical when making greenfeed or silage from drought stressed annual crops. It is better to cut earlier than later. There are a number of reasons not to wait.
1) There is generally no yield increase. As the plant deteriorates, the bottom leases dry and drop from the plant. This reduces both the amount of protein and energy that is in final silage or greenfeed. Any increase in the amount of weight in the grain head is offset by the leaf losses. For canola salvage crops, the blossoms and leaves are the parts of the plant that are high in energy and protein and are the major contributors to plant quality.

TROYER VENTURES
for showing their support of 4-H with the purchase of her steer “Ralph”
If you are interested in 4-H, or would like to volunteer or assist a local 4-H club in your community, contact us at:
2) Fibre levels increase rapidly as the plant matures. In dry, hot conditions, the plants will mature two to four weeks earlier than in a normal year. Acid detergent fibre (ADF) increases by approximately 2% per week. This reduces available energy (digestible energy (DE), total digestible nutrients (TDN), or metabolic energy (ME)) by approximately 1 to 1.5 points per week. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) increases by 2 to 3% per week. When the neutral detergent fibre content in the final ration exceeds 60%, feed digestion rates decrease and the animal is not able to eat as much as normal.

3) High fibre rates increase the amount of stem rejected (not consumed) by the animals. This increases feed waste. Chopping or tub grinding the long stems can increase intake, but it is an additional expense that can be avoided if the crop was harvested earlier. 4) Moisture content in plants decrease as they mature. If making a chopped silage that requires 60 to 65% moisture, the standing crop may only have 55% moisture or less. The material will need to be cut to a shorter length to improve packing but there is no guarantee that the shorter chopping length will solve the problem. 5) More mature cereal crops end up being a chopped straw and grain combination instead of a true silage. This creates more difficulties in feeding due to animal behavior. It is possible that the cows will sort through the feed, pick the grain and leave the straw behind. Acidosis, grain overload, and bloat can occur if the cows overconsume the grain. If possible, cut and harvest the salvage crop early. If placing the silage in a bag or pit, have a 20 L pail and lid next to the unload area. Take a hand full of material out of every third or fourth load and place it in the pail. Re-seal the lid. When the pile, pit or bag is completed, mix the material and fill a bread bag one third full. Press out the air, seal the bag and freeze it prior to submitting for analysis. If the material is packed properly, and covered with plastic, the quality of the material going into storage should be as good as the silage coming out. The submitted sample provides a feed test result well before the silage is fed. This allows for rations to be made before the start of the feeding season.
Quinne Mailman of the Silver Willow 4-H Club would like to thank

A Little Bit of Everything (Part 2) – Exploring Northwest Alberta’s Local Eats As we set out to explore even more of Northern Alberta (this time following Rumble Alberta’s Northwest Route 8 from Fairview to Slave Lake), we had a better idea of what we might encounter along the way. Starting out in Fairview, this route had us finding amazing spots right out of the gate and continuing that trend throughout the journey. Heilan Beer House in Fairview may be one of the coolest places to visit in all northwestern Alberta (a hard statement to make, for sure). It would be right at home in Oregon alongside some of the best brewpubs in the world – definitely not what you would expect to find in small town rural Alberta! The building itself is absolutely gorgeous, with a seamless blend of rustic and modern features, from their hand painted murals to the wooden accents to the hop-inspired light fixtures. When they are not brewing up delicious local craft beer (be sure to try their Dirty Blond and their Heilan Hayes), they also run a family-friendly restaurant with a tasty menu of pizzas and pub fare that uses local ingredients. Before we left Fairview, there was another spot that caught our eye. Alongside the highway in a vacant lot was a bus with a sign that read “Assorted Poutines,” and we knew we had to find out more. We pulled in, and sure enough, it was a bus turned food truck serving up burgers, fries, poutines and even fry bread! CK Next Generation Concession can be found throughout the area and serving up tasty treats at events like pancake breakfasts. The poutine portion was massive (they were not shy with the gravy or grated cheese), and the fresh fry bread rolled to order in cinnamon and sugar was a fun treat while we headed back out on the road. This route actually takes you just over the border into British Columbia, before curving back around through to Grande Prairie and
then along to Slave Lake. As we are focused on Alberta eats, we won’t go into detail on the BC bit, but it is worth a mention that this route takes you through to Dawson Creek, where you can find Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway. (We know, it’s not food related, but still fun!) As the route weaves back into Alberta, an absolute must visit is Broken Tine Orchard near Rio Grande. The haskap berry U-Pick and winery is gorgeous on a sunny day. We had the perfect weather – blue skies with barely a cloud in the sky, but with the rain from the day before, everything was looking fresh and green. Kreg Alde and his family run the 4th generation farm, with their family homesteading the land in 1926. There is about 2400 acres of cultivated land, with main crops being canola, wheat, and barley. Kreg is a floodgate of knowledge about the haskap berry (a Canadian superfruit that has way more antioxidants than raspberries and blueberries), and with a flavour profile that is almost like a cross between a raspberry and a huckleberry, you will be wanting to pick them by the gallon! The U-pick opens next month, and you can also stop in their tasting cabin to sample their own Haskap Melomel and their other wines. Once we got back into Grande Prairie, we headed straight to Broken Oak Distilling (no relation to Broken Tine Orchard, we checked). This distillery is the epitome of local craft, sourcing most of its ingredients from local farms – including haskaps from Broken Tine Orchard (okay, so there is a little relation). Their taproom is a beautiful space with a great set up to taste their lineup of products and pick a few bottles to take home. From classic gins and vodkas to the haskap berry liqueur and dill pickle vodka, the spirits are handcrafted to the finest detail that will have you wanting to bring home one of each.
They even have small barrels of unaged whisky that you can buy and age at home! Only two years into operation, they are staples at many of the local restaurants and have the community members forming a legion of dedicated followers. (For any Rumble Alberta passholders, you get a special discount if you take a selfie by the still!) Grande Prairie is home to a unique coffee shop that you have most likely never encounteredbefore – instead of roasting their coffee, Ole Smokes Coffee smokes their coffee. You read that right. They SMOKE their coffee, giving it a flavour reminiscent of campfires and summer nights. It pairs perfectly alongside their menu of local eats that features wild game meats like elk and bison. While they did start roasting coffee as well, the smoked coffee is what you really need to try. They have a variety of flavours and strengths to choose from – we highly recommend the Stout Maple that is smoked with, you guessed it, maplewood. It is bold, but without the bitter aftertaste. Even if you are not a coffee drinker, chances are you will enjoy this stuff.

“It is far to this Great Water?” he asked. “Perhaps two days,” I replied, pointing down river. “And these men who came from the sea,” he continued, “can you describe them?” “This was long ago, before I came to this world,” I replied. “It is a story from my father who was very young when they came. They were washed ashore by a great storm, lived with the people for two winters, then took a great war canoe, and disappeared back out on the Great Water. Two of them did not go, but stayed with the people.” Wool showed much excitement. “Are they still at your village?” he asked. Shaking my head, I replied, “No, they passed to the other world when I was very young.” Wool showed much disappointment. “How many seasons have passed since these people came?” he asked. Again, I shrugged. “My father is the oldest man there is. I am the only son that still lives, for all the others have gone beyond. He had seen few winters when these men came from the Great Water.” “But you saw the two men who stayed,” Wool said. “Where these two men like my people?” I shrugged. “My father says they had yellow skin, although I do not remember that.” Again, Wool was very excited. He turned to a man who sat beside him, and said something in yet a third language that had many choking sounds. It appeared that none of the others understood this talk, for they all looked puzzled. Turning back to me, Wool asked, “Can you show us the Great Water?” The next day, when the sun was in the center of the sky, we could see my village far

“What people are these?” he asked. “My people. Bella Coola.” below. Wool paused near where I waited for them, and pointed to the trail of smoke far below. “What people are these?” he asked. “My people,” I said. “Bella Coola.” “We will be welcome there?” he asked. That was for my father to say, after I had told him what I had learned, but I did not lie. I nodded, and said, “My father is a great leader.” That night in my father’s village, after eating much fish, the strangers slept very hard. We tested them as they lay, and found that it would take a great deal to wake them. My father told me that he was very happy that they trusted me so much, for if it became necessary to send them beyond, it would be easy to do so while they slept.
The next day there was much trouble. The white man tried to make my people eat some of their meat, and I had to tell them that I alone, among my people, ate meat. I told them how the smell of meat would make the fish go away, so those who catch fish can not eat it. Some of the white men found this very funny, but Wool did not. Later, these same men who laughed caused more trouble, much as small boys sometimes do. They threw the bone from the meat at one of the dogs who promptly swallowed it. The owner loved his dog, so in order to avoid killing him, he beat the dog until it let go of this bone. Then these trouble makers threw a bone in the river, and one of my people who saw this jumped in and retrieved the bone.

Marker of Stone
The bones were burned in fire, but the two men who retrieved them had to be purified. First they washed in scented water and sand, and then they washed in the smoke of a fire made from cedar and grass. Wool returned from his study of our village, or perhaps a study of the sun and sky that he was always making, and asked why these men where washing in the smoke. When I told him, he went to his men and they spoke quietly. Those who had caused the trouble hung their heads in shame. My father and I watched this from the entrance to his lodge. “They are like boys when they first become men,” my father observed. “They are not bad, just foolish. It is good that they have a strong leader, but you must get them away from here.” “They wish to see the Great Water,” I told my father. “So, take them to the Great Water, then they will leave. We have had peace for many summers, but these white men will bring back war with their foolish ways.” He turned and entered his lodge but then came back and added, “They are our guests so we must see to their safety. Those of the other clan, the people of Bella Bella hate all white men and there will be fighting. Or perhaps these …” he gestured toward the white men, “these children will cause trouble with our own people. Then when the big canoes come on the Great Water they will no longer trade with us. Take them to the Great Water, let them see it, then have them go.” He turned back into the dimness of the lodge. With the help of a few well picked men, and three canoes, I arranged for the white men to travel to the village of my uncle. Uncle greeted us at the water’s edge and presented a great feast. After much food we slept there, then returned to our canoes and went on to the Great Water. Later that day, two canoes of Bella Bella people came out from shore to meet us. While we paddled to that place, Wool asked me what was said. “The Bella Bella trade with the white men who come in big canoes, out on the Great Water,” I explained. “Then they trade with other people for these things.” I gestured toward the chief of the Bella Bella. “This one says that a short time ago he was badly treated by white men in a big canoe, and that his people defeated them in battle.” Wool looked at the two canoes of Bella Bella and asked. “Is this dangerous?” I shrugged. “The Bella Bella people are very loud, and cause much trouble. They are of our people, but unlike those of my father’s village and my uncle’s village these people like war very much. My people try to stay away.” “Were many people killed in this battle he speaks of?” Wool asked. Again I shrugged. “The Bella Bella people have poor memories,” I advised. At Wool’s look of puzzlement, one of the Cree said, “He means they are liars.” When we reached the shore, the Bella Bella left our canoe, and we backed away into the water. He had wished to take the death

the conclusion to Marker of Stone sticks of the white men, and was not happy as we paddled away. He danced on the shore and made a great noise. I directed the canoes to the place where the empty village stands by the rock. Wool was happy with this place, and we placed our camp on top of the rock, where we might see the Bella Bella if they came to cause trouble. We stayed there for three days. Each day Wool would look through a thing at the sky, then shake his head in sadness. Two other white men spent much time looking at the empty lodges and trash in the old village. Finally, on the third day, I told them that I would leave them to the Bella Bella if they did not come with me. I had to make them leave our land, as my father had said. Wool showed me this strange thing he used to look at the sky and said, “I need to find out where we are. I am keeping a record.” “You are on the Great Water, near the river of the Bella Coola,” I told him, though I thought he should already know this. “You are also near the home of the Bella Bella who would like to send you beyond and take your things to their lodges. We must go!” “Then leave me a canoe and go back,” Wool said. “I will try one more time to read the sky, and then I will follow.” Wool and two other white men stayed at the old village. As we paddled away, I could see him making marks on the big rock. The next day Wool and his men caught up to us, and we entered the village of my Uncle. The Bella Bella where already there, and almost brought death to some of our people with their trouble. They hid in one of the lodges when Wool and his people pointed the death sticks at them. To the Bella Bella I said, “You will leave this place or the white men will kill all of us. You can come back and trade when the white men are gone.” Then I went outside and said to Wool, “Let the people of the loud talk go to their homes. Then we will all go up to my father’s village, for there is no happiness here.” Wool agreed, and his men did not point their sticks. The Bella Bella people went to their village, and we went to my father’s. This was a very close thing, but it was not over. We still had the white men and all their trouble for one more day. That day was spent at my father’s village, and passed with no further trouble. When they left the next day, I followed to make sure that they left our land. One of the Cree was not well, and had to be carried by Wool when they crossed the river, but leave they did. As they climbed the cliffs out of our land, I watched them until I could no longer see them. Two days after Wool and his men had left, I borrowed a canoe, and went once more to the Great Water. I went to the large rock where I had seen Wool making marks. The marks had not been made deep in the rock, but had been put on it with the color of blood. I studied them for many moments but could not understand why Wool had done this thing. It was not pretty, like a drawing,
nor did it tell a story, like the work of a carver. It did not help to make the stone look better, and was the color of war. I have remembered these marks, and will make them again, so that you will see.
