Fall Spraying for Weed Con Calvin Yoder Forage Seed Specialist SARDA Ag Research/Peace Region Forage Seed Association Fall applied herbicides are a practical and effective means of managing weeds in grass seed crops. A number of the more difficult to control winter annual, biennial and perennial weeds such as dandelion, narrow-leaved hawk’s-beard, volunteer clover, rough cinquefoil, stork’s-bill, scentless chamomile and flixweed tend to be more susceptible to herbicides in the fall than at other times of the year. Grass seed stands that are going into their first year of seed production are generally ideal candidates for a September herbicide application. These fields tend to have more weeds present compared to stands where a seed crop has already been harvested. Generally the weeds in newly established stands are also in better condition to spray. The herbicide selected will depend on what weeds are present and the tolerance of the grass seed crops to the herbicide. Products such as Curtail M, Prestige, Ally and Spectrum (MCPA ester+clopyralid+florasulam). Spectrum is no longer available but can be made by mixing Curtail M and the active ingredient florasulam. Cirpreme (halauxifen+florasulam+clopyralid) +MCPA ester is a relatively new herbicide mix from Corteva and so far has shown good potential for use on creeping red fescue and timothy. Fall spraying can also provide more crop safety than spring or summer applications of herbicides such as Ally. Spring or summer spraying of Ally on a number of grass seed crops typically stunts the growth of the crop and may cause reduced seed head size, resulting in reduced seed production. Application of Ally in the fall usually does not result in long-term injury or reduced seed yields to grass seed crops such as timothy. Many trials comparing products for fall spraying in grass seed crops have been done in the Peace Region. The table below shows a summary of what products work best on certain weeds when applied in the fall. Table 1. Herbicide options and weed control ratings for fall spraying of grass seed crops. In many areas of the Peace Region narrow-leaved hawk’s-beard is resistant to Group 2 herbicides such as Ally and Refine SG. Fall applications of herbicides such as Prestige and Curtail M will provide very effective control into the following year (Figure 1 and 2). Narrow-leaved hawk’sbeard becomes difficult to control in the spring especially in mid to late May once the plants start to bolt. SEE ATTACHED POWER POINT FILE FOR FIGURE 1 AND 2, Canada thistle in grass seed stands is difficult to control. Emergence of Canada thistle is later in the spring than many other weeds. Spring herbicide applications on grass seed crops are generally made in late May to early June. At that time there may be a few thistles present but there will be more coming. Unfortunately controlling thistle in grass seed crops with fall herbicide applications is very inconsistent. Fall spraying grass seed stands is an effective practice to control a number of winter annual and perennial weeds that are often more difficult to control in the spring. Mid- September applications are ideal as temperatures are generally still good and weeds are actively growing. The herbicide used will depend on tolerance of the grass seed crop to the specific herbicide and the weeds present. If spraying timothy stands where hay or straw is being baled and sold into the export hay market check with the buyers to see which herbicides are okay to use as some herbicides will leave residue in the product.

THANK YOU to those individuals, volunteers, companies and organizations that showed their support for our club and our local members by playing a part in our Annual Achievement Day & Sales June 12th & August 7th, 2021 at the Kiskatinaw Fall Fair Grounds in Sunset Prairie. All our club members worked very hard to present their lambs and steers for auction and each and every bidder and buyer is appreciated. We are deeply grateful and appreciative for your support of youth in our community!

seed. As the plant matures, the oil content continually increases. The majority of oil is developed from 35 to 55 days after full flower. Rations should contain less than 7% total fat or oil because rumen function is impaired above this level. Plants drop leaves as they mature. Leaves and flowers contain a large percentage of the protein and energy. Bacteria that are involved with the ensiling process obtain energy from soluble sugars in the leaves. If the leaves have dropped, less energy is available, and the ensiling process could take one to two weeks longer compared to a crop that supplies adequate sugars. Work with various industry professionals including private consultants, feed company nutritionists or government specialists to develop a feeding program for the different types of animals that can utilize canola greenfeed or silage. Peace Region Pest Update - Beneficial Insects Hello! I hope everyone has been enjoying the nice weather lately! This week we will be talking about beneficial insects. Some insects you may think are pests but in fact are helpful. I too have thought that about some of the insects we are covering today. This article will cover Ladybeetles, Lacewings and Carabids are just a few beneficials that work for you in your crops, gardens, and flower beds. Ladybeetles, or more commonly known as Ladybugs.
The larvae of the Ladybeetle are what does most of the damage to the pest population, some research has shown that the larvae can eat between 60-100 aphids per day. Do not think that adult Ladybeetles don’t contribute either; they continue to eat aphids, mealybugs, and other soft bodied pests at a similar rate. Another insect’s larvae that are known for eating similar soft bodied pests is the Lacewing. Adult Lacewings are a pale green insect with clear wings that resemble lace because of the
END OFTHE SUMMER SHOP
vein structure in them. However, Lacewings are more commonly nocturnal and actively search for prey at night. The Lacewing larvae are more active earlier in the season so they attack the earlier pests which can sometimes cause more damage to the plant. They have also been called the “Aphid Lion” because they are ferocious towards anything that is soft bodies and moves slow. The main prey for both these predators, the Ladybeetle and Lacewing is aphids. The last insect to discuss
that is a predator and not a pest is a Ground Beetle. As someone who is terrified of beetles, I have a hard time believing this, but it is true. They are the beetle that I am sure everyone saw running around earlier this summer. There are almost 2000 species in North America! These Beetles are known to prey on caterpillars, cutworms, grasshopper eggs and other pests. I hope everyone has a good last couple weeks of summer! Tory Snider

Supporting ranchers through hot AB summer From consistent water supply to access to feed to managing financial risk, Alberta’s ranchers can access the programs that make the most sense for their operation. “Alberta’s government is here for our cattle producers. We’re working with industry to identify their most pressing concerns and making sure they have the supports they need to make it through this difficult time. We will continue to support the agriculture industry in whatever way we can,” said Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry The governments of Canada and Alberta, through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, recently doubled the low yield threshold to encourage Alberta grain farmers to divert additional cereal or pulse crops to be salvaged for livestock feed. Alberta’s Water Pumping Program provides assistance to producers in securing adequate water supplies for domestic, livestock or agricultural purposes. Alberta announced a 20 per cent reduction in premium costs for crop, pasture and forage insurance earlier this year, which protects against weather-related production loss. As a result, 400 additional farmers and ranchers enrolled, almost 1,400 farmers and ranchers increased their level of coverage and almost 230 clients re-enrolled after cancelling their insurance in 2020 or prior years. Alberta’s Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) hired an additional 21 adjustment team members in December 2020 and April 2021, bringing the total number of active adjustment team members to 119. The federal Livestock Tax Deferral allows farmers who sell part of their breeding herd due to drought or flooding in prescribed drought or flood regions to defer a portion of sale proceeds to the following year. “I appreciated the opportunity to show Premier, Minister Dreeshen, Minister Nixon and Associate Minister Horner the impacts of drought first-hand. I value their acknowledgement of the severity and urgency of the situation. AgriRecovery programming and other initiatives are going to be essential to maintain Alberta cattle herds,” said Melanie Wowk, chair, Alberta Beef Producers.

Hello, today I will be continuing my talk on more beneficial insects. The first one I will be talking about is the Bee Fly. A Bee Fly very closely resembles a bee as the name implies. They can range anywhere from 2-28mm long and can have yellow, brown, and red markings, similar to a bee. Their wings are transparent and can have bands or marks and are characteristically swept back angle or straight out, another distinctive feature is a prominent forward beak. Aside from being great pollinators as adults, they also hunt adult female grasshoppers and actively lay their eggs beside the female grasshoppers’ eggs. The Bee fly larvae after hatching will then feed on the grasshopper egg pod. The second beneficial insect is a Syrphid fly or more commonly known as a Hover fly. With a look very similar to a Yellowjacket wasp, however wasps have two sets of wings and Syrphid’s only have one, with a smooth hairless body. Their larvae are 10-15mm long and is a yellowish green with pale stripes. They have prominent brown breathing tubes on their posterior end. As adults Syrphid flies are great pollinators of field crops, while in larval development they have been recorded of eating as many as 400
aphids.
The last insect I will be discussing today is a Tachinid fly. A Tachinid fly is a bristly bodied fly that has many different colors and patterns and is around 5-15mm long. Adults actively lay their eggs on living hosts which are then parasitized internally usually while the host is alive. The larvae can be internal parasitoids of many insects including beetles, wasps, grasshoppers and various cutworms, armyworms, and sawflies. It may seem at first glance while in the field that some of these insects may be contributing to damage of your crops, but in fact they are helping to control many pest insect populations! In our collections during the season, we monitor and record the beneficial insects that are in the fields and try to determine how healthy the populations are.

Blindness in pets Dr. Charlotte Corbett When we are picking out our next friend, we always look at their eyes – for some it’s avoiding blue eyes, for others it’s finding a horse with a soft eye. No one can resist the puppy dog eyes. Unfortunately, some of our pets will lose their eyesight, either through disease, trauma or age-related changes. Causes of blindness include: congenital (the animal is born with the disease), cataracts, diabetes, hypertension, infectious diseases and trauma that leads to ulcers or glaucoma. The most common eye conditions we see are ulcers and cataracts. Ulcers are common in all animals. An ulcer is when the cornea (outer layer of the eye) gets scratched. This causes a defect in the eye that can be painful and could get infected. Eye medications are used to control inflammation, prevent infection and assist in healing. Untreated ulcers can lead to infections that eat away at the cornea, causing the eye to rupture. Ulcers are treated until the defect is healed, which can be several weeks. Ulcers heal at a rate of 0.6mm per day (a pin head is about 2mm). Cataracts are common in our older pets. As they age, the proteins in the lens of the eye change. Certain diseases can also cause

Picture: Captain Murdock – lost both eyes due to a traumatic event. Most people are unaware he is blind if they don’t look close as he is everywhere and will RUN through the house like a possessed little ghost. He also beats up his brother, Lewey, who has both eyes. cataracts to occur: diabetes, metabolic disorders, trauma, and hypertension. There is no medical treatment for cataracts. They must be surgically removed – surgery is available at referral hospitals for treatment. Cataracts that are not removed should be monitored to check for glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye), especially in patients that are diabetic. Medications may be needed to treat inflammation or increased pressure in the eye. Pets with glaucoma should have regular eye pressure tests to monitor the pressure, and in turn, pain. Enucleation is only used when necessary. Enucleation is the surgery in which a veterinarian will remove the eye and close the socket. It is used for ruptured eyes and eyes that are painful, even with management. A painful eye can decrease the quality of life significantly and some animals will even selfharm while scratching at the eye. It can be a very difficult time for owners and animals, as they adjust to their new life without sight. Sometimes, it can be more distressing for the owner than the pet. Most of our furry companions do very well without their sight as their other senses are heightened. Cats will grow their whiskers longer in order to have a better warning system before they walk into walls or furniture. Animals have an excellent ability to know where they are, what room they are in, where the food is and where the countertops are. All of our blind pets will occasionally hit a wall, but animals with fully functional eyes can also run into walls. Some pets (such as senior, deaf pets) may need pool
noodle “bumpers” to help them navigate. Owners do need to make minor changes in order to help them navigate, especially older animals. Keeping the floor clear, keeping furniture in the same arrangement, bells on other pets and fences to prevent animals from wandering off are simple environmental changes that can help keep animals safe and comfortable in their homes. When an animal loses their sight suddenly, such as enucleation or diabetic cataracts, it is best to slowly reintroduce them to their world. Start with one or two rooms, then slowly continue to open up the house and yard until they are comfortable. Some breeds are more prone to eye problems than others. Brachycephalic breeds such as pugs, frenchies, frenchtons, and bull dogs commonly have eye ulcers. This is due to how far their eyes stick out of the skull and how large the eyes are – they are just more prone to running into things that scrape the eye. Pet insurance with these breeds are recommended as ulcer medications can very quickly add up. Almost every breed of dog has an eye issue that they are more prone to: most kennel clubs will have a list of diseases their breed is more likely to have. Signs to look for are watering eyes, discharge, squinting, and rubbing their face. The signs of eye pain can be very subtle – sometimes it is just decreased energy. If you are concerned about your pet’s eyes, they best thing to do is have an examination performed to determine the cause. Most of the time eye problems are treatable, but dedication and patience on your part is important.

Kelly MacMillan, President of HRBC, expressed his thanks to the BC government, Minister Farnworth, and Mike Starchuk, the MLA in Surrey – Cloverdale, for their commitment to support Fraser Downs”. “This is the best possible news for horse racing overall,” said MacMillan. “Breeders, owners, trainers and all the backstretch workers whose jobs were impacted by COVID have been anxiously awaiting some good news. The BC government and all the MLAs we talked to listened, and they came through big time.” David Milburn, President of the HBPA, also
added his thanks to MLAs, especially Niki Sharma, the MLA for Vancouver – Hastings, home of the Hastings Racecourse. “We were facing an uncertain future,” said Milburn. “Now we can look forward to extending the current season for at least another month and will be able to turn our attention to working on a full season in 2022,” he added. “We’re excited to start welcoming back thousands of horse racing fans from across BC who come out every year to enjoy the races. Central Alberta Route 7, Cochrane to Medicine Hat, The Adventures of Carla and Regan - Part One Five days, 1500 kilometers, a mother and daughter duo creating a legacy of memories to treasure, while exploring and discovering incredible points of interest, having adventures, touring galleries, shops and businesses. Regan and I left our home in east central Alberta early on Monday morning. The first leg of the trip was a four hour drive to Kananaskis, where Regan and I explored the area and took part in the local Rumble Alberta and History Check challenges. We travelled to Exshaw where we were greeted with an incredible mural. While it’s not on the Rumble Alberta tour, it’s a true must see, the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. The Sanctuary gives one the chance to tour the location and view the wolfdogs. The enclosures are huge, very natural and most importantly, they keep the wolfdogs safe. Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary offers a variety of tours, including guided, selfguided and the much coveted interactive tour. Book the interactive tour a couple of weeks in advance as it fills up quickly. Find the online at www.yamnuskawolfdogsanctuary.com. Next on our tour was a stop at our hotel, Rumble Alberta sponsor, the Stony Nakoda Resort and Casino. It’s a perfect stopping point for anyone wanting to visit Kananaskis. The rooms are fresh and clean, the hotel itself is bright and open with great mountain and wilderness décor. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the restaurant, The Ridge offers an excellent and comprehensive menu. It’s family friendly, and has a great selection of offerings. I highly recommend the Lobster Mac & Cheese. The hotel boasts a hot tub and pool for a round of relaxation after a day of
hiking and touring. Get the best rate guarantee at www. stoneynakodaresort.com. After a restful sleep, Regan and I decided to rough it and camped in Exshaw. Between the two of us, we were able to set up our tent in about half an hour, and were fully set up and ready to go after about an hour. Camping was an adventure and together with Regan, an easy experience., we pitched in (pun intended) to get our tent, mattress and bedding all set up. After setting up, we travelled to the next sponsor on the tour, Boundary Ranch for an incredible 2 hour Ridge Ride. This is only one of the many tours that the ranch offers, including overnight trips, lunch and steak trips, surf and saddle trip which is a ride and a rafting tour, and woof & hoof package, my personal favourite. Check out their website to book your trail ride or adventure package at https://boundaryranch.com/. The Ridge Ride takes the rider through lush forest, along the mountain ridge to view and enjoy the mountain vistas, and through some challenging terrain. The following day, we tore down our tent and hit the next stop on the tour, the Iron Goat Pub & Grill in Canmore. As a tour sponsor, they offer 15% off food orders, and have a selfie challenge. The restaurant boasts soaring ceilings, a large patio, upstairs dining with patio – and a wine cellar. The view of the Bow Valley is unmatched at this mountainside restaurant. The restaurant is located at 703 Benchlands Trail, and is a must stop on your visit to Canmore. Once we finished our meals, we visited Stop A on the map, Cochrane. This town requires a few hours if you’re a shopper. The main street
is charming and sweet, full of unique shops and restaurants. We made a special trip to the very popular Horse Creek Heritage Candy and Gifts. This store is every child’s dream, full of so many different treats and hand made chocolates that are melt in your mouth divine. The back of the store has a gift emporium, much of the products are created by local artisans. Heading into Bragg Creek, you’ll immediately see boutiques, ice cream parlours and galleries. We stopped in at The Painted Moose. The gallery is an artist’s collective full of unique wares, such as vintage bespoke jean jackets, jewellery, paintings and pottery, it’s a lovely spot, well priced, and a perfect spot to browse and shop. We were directed to the Bragg Creek Trading post. This store is a true legacy, opened in the early 1900s and it’s still in the same family. The Trading Post is located at 117 White Ave, Bragg Creek. A big part of the Rumble road tour are the challenges, and we enjoyed touring villages and hamlets, taking selfies and making scenic shots in Priddis and Millarville. There are plenty of little hidden gems here, walking trails, parks, pubs and restaurants. As you’re travelling, be sure to download the History Check App to keep up with the challenges. https://HistoryCheck.ca Photos and article by: Carla Lehman Photography carlalehmanphoto.ca @CarlaLehmanPhoto

Emergency feed available for BC farmers The governments of B.C. and Canada are providing financial support for B.C. farmers and ranchers who have suffered losses through wildfires, record heat and prolonged drought in 2021. The support is being delivered through several programs to help sustain farmers’ and ranchers’ livelihoods, family farms and contributions to the province’s food security. “The B.C. government has a dedicated team working closely with ranchers and farmers to respond to emergencies like wildfires and to create programs that help preserve their businesses and our local food supply,” said Lana Popham, B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “The losses B.C. farmers and ranchers have experienced this year have been heartbreaking, and recovering from them will take time, commitment and support, for which the B.C. government will be there for the whole way.” The governments of B.C. and Canada are creating a federal-provincial AgriRecovery response to help producers who are experiencing extraordinary recovery expenses due to fire and drought. “We are working closely with the Province to get B.C. farm families the support they need as soon as possible,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “By unlocking more AgriStability funds through interim payments and invoking late participation, we can get more cash in hand for farmers who are making tough decisions in a difficult situation. We will continue to support farm families to get them through the challenges we face today, and position them for a sustainable future, since we know climate change will continue to pose challenges.” The Province has also taken steps to provide farmers and ranchers with additional and immediate support by implementing “late participation” in the federal-provincial AgriStability program for 2021. The program provides funding to farmers who have experienced income declines due to crop or livestock losses or market conditions. Late
participation means B.C. farmers not enrolled for the 2021 program year can apply to enrol until Dec. 31, 2022. Farmers enrolled in the AgriStability 2021 program year will be eligible to receive a much higher interim payment within a few weeks of completing the application forms. Increasing the maximum interim payment from 50% to 75% of the estimated final payment will
improve cashflow for farmers and help them continue operations this year. B.C. ranchers and farmers who have suffered a decrease to their available feed supply and require emergency support as a result of this summer’s wildfires may also be eligible to receive hay through the Emergency Feed Program established by the Province, ensuring continued care for their animals.

1. SPEAK TO YOUR AUDIENCE AND NO ONE ELSE. Attempting to connect with everyone will only weaken the message you’re trying to convey. 2. CRAFT A POWERFUL HEADLINE to capture the attention of your target audience. 3. SELECT ONE MAIN IMAGE for your design, and make sure that it ties in with the ad’s overall message. 4. OPTIMIZE YOUR COPY. Choose the right words to clearly communicate why the product or service you’re selling is exactly what your audience needs. 5. EMBRACE WHITE SPACE. Don’t let superfluous clutter distract your audience from the key points in your ad. 6. LIMIT YOUR OFFERS TO TWO. Less is more when it comes to advertising. Including too much information will only confuse your audience. 7. MAKE YOUR AD VISUALLY APPEALING by grouping similar elements together, limiting the number of typefaces you use and choosing colours wisely. 8. STAND OUT WITH COLOUR. A full-colour ad on an otherwise black-andwhite page is sure to draw the eye, and the opposite — monochromatic in a sea of colour — is equally true. 9. ALWAYS INCLUDE A CALL TO ACTION. What do you want people to do after they’ve read your ad? Sign up for your service? Visit your showroom? Let them know! 10. KEEP CONTACT INFORMATION CRYSTAL CLEAR. Potential buyers need to instantly know how and where to reach you.

Make sure you know and follow these school bus safety rules for motorists. It’s not only smart; it’s the law! Yellow Flashing Lights signal that the bus is getting ready to stop and load or unload children. This means you should slow down and prepare to stop. Red Flashing Lights & Extended Stop Arms signal that the bus has stopped, and children will be entering or exiting the bus. This means you should stop your car and wait until the red lights stop fl ashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn and the bus resumes moving. Alberta milk production ‘Dairy farmers closely watch their costs and returns to remain efficient and profitable,’ says Pauline Van Biert, research analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘They watch their milk production levels to be able to supply the amount of milk the
consumer is asking for.’ Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 was a challenge. By April 2020, there was a huge shift in milk demand as consumption patterns changed from the food service industry to cooking at and staying at home.

‘This also stalled revenues. Both revenues and production requirements saw improvement by the end of the year as demand for dairy products rose to near pre-pandemic levels.’ Despite the pandemic, there was little change to cost of production between 2019 and 2020. The average cost to produce a hectolitre of milk - 100 litres - in 2020 was $83.24. This was less than a 1% increase, up only 77 cents, from $82.54 per hectolitre in 2019. ‘On a per cow basis, this equals close to $8,100 per cow for the year, of which $3,531 was spent on feed,’ explains Van Biert. ‘Good quality feed is necessary for animals to stay healthy and produce quality milk.’ Gross income dropped about 1% to $86.41/hectolitre sold from $87.01/hectolitre sold in 2019. This was not due to the milk prices farmers received, but more the fact that cattle inventories saw little change from beginning to end of year. ‘Farmers seemed focused on herd and farm stability and managing milk production through already uncertain times, rather than movement of cattle,’ says Van Biert. fluctuation, the average milk price dairy farmers received for their milk sales remained stable between 2019 and 2020. Average herd size increased from 189 to 202 dairy cows (not including heifers). Total costs per cow decreased as did average milk production per cow. Cost of grains remained close to 2019 values while the prices for both hay and silage decreased. The average cost of feed per hectolitre remained similar to 2019, as production levels were similar. Total cost of feed did decrease on a per cow basis. Labour hours per cow decreased but the wages per hour have increased thus not showing a savings in cost per hectolitre. However, less labour and larger herd size indicate improvements in efficiencies at the farm level. The Economics of Milk Production also highlights differences between top third and bottom third herds based on different cost indicators. Costs can fluctuate as much as 22% between high and low cost producers. Read Economics of Milk Production, 2020: The Dairy Cost Study and find the reference supplemental factsheets there as well.

Crop contracts – what to do if you are short of product ‘A crop sale contract is a legal business agreement between a seller and buyer,’ says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Signatories to a contract should read it carefully, consider all the “what ifs?” and clear up any uncertainties prior to signing. A producer may decide to have it first interpreted by a third party, such as a lawyer, before signing it.’ A crop purchase contract usually specifies price, quantity, quality or grade, the delivery location and date, and sometimes the transportation method. Grain companies are in the business of buying and selling crops, so when they sign a contract to purchase crop from a producer, at some point they will have a contract to sell that amount of crop and grade to a domestic or foreign buyer. For that reason, when a producer is unable to fulfill the volume or quality of a contract, the grain company needs to either find a replacement source for that crop in shortfall or face default penalties on the contract with their buyer. In most years, a good time to consider contracting crop to lock in price and delivery opportunity is during the growing season when prices often rally, at least temporarily, in response to weather concerns. ‘Usually, incrementally committing up to 25% of expected production prior to harvest is a safe practice, but sometimes a crop production shortfall may still arise. Weather events or conditions in some years may prevent enough crop of the contracted grade to be produced, resulting in a shortfall to fulfill the terms of the contract. In that case, the producer who signed the contract may be liable for damages,’ explains Blue. If a producer realizes that it will not be possible to fill the terms of the contract, they should advise the crop buyer of that situation sooner rather than later. The buyer may have obligations in place for processing and selling that crop contracted by the producer, so the buyer also faces a potential loss. If the buyer can easily replace the crop contracted with the producer at the same or lower price as the contracted amount, there may be minimal damages to a shortfall on the contract. However, if the crop price has risen from the time that the contract was signed, the producer may have to pay the price difference between the contracted price and “replacement” cost for the volume of crop in shortfall. ‘In some circumstances, a buyer may be able and willing to roll the crop contract to a subsequent production year, subject to a price adjustment. However, that is not so feasible this year with current prices high relative to those of post-harvest 2022.’ The crop buyer will want to maintain a good relationship with the producer. The most important considerations are early communication of the pending difficulty in fulfilling the contract, followed by honest, open and civil communication. Farm or field inspections by a buyer representative may be
necessary. Some buyers are suggesting that the producer, after advising the buyer of a potential shortfall, wait until after harvest to deal with the contract. ‘Participants in AgriInsurance through AFSC may be eligible for a payout for a crop production shortfall below their coverage level. In addition, the Variable Price Benefit of that program may provide some additional relief if there is a crop insurance claim,’ says Blue. A contract buyout charge will be an allowable expense for income tax purposes. A buyout cost (excluding penalties and interest) will also be an allowable expense under the AgriStability Program. There may be some relief following a contract buyout for participants in AgriStability.

Food Price Trends ‘Despite the fact that COVID-19 is not a food crisis, this pandemic has significant consequences for the food supply chain,’ explains Jeewani Fernando, provincial consumer market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘The impact varies across countries and commodity sectors, reflecting factors such as the importance of trade, differences in the functioning of supply chains and the market, which producers and farmers supply. Some of these effects may be relatively short-lived while others may be longer lasting.’ The pandemic caused border and facility closures, shifted consumer demand from foodservice to food retail and created unemployment and underemployment. It also introduced modifications in production, manufacturing, distribution and retailing practices to accommodate enhanced safety procedures, from testing of personnel to additional time for sanitizing.

In the latest Trends in Retail, retail food price trends in Canada are analyzed emphasizing the short-term trend in the pre- and post (first wave) COVID-19 situation to understand the impact and shed some light on food price trends. ‘According to Canada’s Food Price Report, 2019, long-term food prices show an increasing trend representing a normal inflationary pattern,’ says Fernando. ‘However, since the financial crisis of 2008, food prices have become more volatile making it very challenging to predict food prices. The COVID-19 situation has added more challenges to such predictions.’ Overall food prices in Canada have jumped about 2.3% in 2020 compared to 2019. This represents a 2.4% increase in food purchased from stores and a 2.2% increase in food purchased from restaurants. Retail prices of all major food categories increased significantly with meat, eggs, fresh vegetables and some processed food and ingredients (butter, flour, rice, canned fruits and vegetables) reporting record level price increases. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for Canada report that the price of food purchased from restaurants increased 2.2% in 2020 as compared to 2019. This includes food purchased from full service restaurants reporting about a 2.2% increase and food purchased from fast food/take-out restaurants recording a 2.1% increase. ‘The 2021 year-to-date CPI for restaurant

food indicates that prices have increased 2.5%, with food purchased from full service restaurants recording a 2.6% increase and food purchased from fast food and take-out restaurants recording a 2.3% increase. These price trends may indicate that the increasing cost of restaurant operations (complying with COVID-19 safety protocols, increasing food ingredients costs) are being passed on to consumers in early 2021,’ explains Fernando. While COVID-19 continued to affect Canada’s agri-food chain and global food systems, other notable factors may include the impact of extreme weather events, trade environment, exchange rates, disruptions in food processing, food distribution and retailing, and changes in consumer food purchasing behaviour. ‘Canada’s food price report forecasts that overall food prices in Canada would increase 3% to 5% in 2021. This would be an increase of annual food expenditure per family by $695 compared to 2020, excluding foodservice. The provincial breakdown of the forecast however, predicts a below average food price increase for Alberta,’ says Fernando.
