$20M to help BC ranchers, farmers recover from drought, wildfires B.C.’s ranchers can access up to $20 million to help with extraordinary expenses they incur for feed, shelter, animal health and safety, and the transportation of their livestock as a result of this year’s wildfires and drought. B.C.’s farmers are also eligible to receive funding for extraordinary expenses through the 2021 Canada-British Columbia Wildfire and Drought AgriRecovery Initiative. Extraordinary expenses include reseeding forage, and to replace fencing or other critical infrastructure that is not insurable and was damaged or destroyed in the fires. This funding includes funding for beekeepers to replace their colonies or apiary equipment lost in the wildfires. “This year’s drought and fires have been incredibly difficult for many B.C. ranchers and farmers, and the B.C. government is here to help them keep their livelihoods and the province’s food security and economy moving forward,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “The $20-million response package we’ve put together will help B.C. ranchers maintain their breeding stock, continue their operations and continue to
supply British Columbians with food grown and raised in our province.” The 2021 Canada-British Columbia Wildfire and Drought AgriRecovery Initiative provides assistance for the following: Wildfire and drought support: extraordinary expenses caused by the wildfires and drought related to ensuring livestock feeding needs are not impacted due to feed loss or decreased availability; extraordinary expenses caused by the wildfires and drought related to ensuring animal health and safety; transportation costs to move impacted animals to a safe feeding location; feed for breeding livestock, including cattle, sheep and horses, based on a feed need requirement; contributions toward the re-establishment of tame perennial forage damaged by the fires; and where breeding herds are reduced due to lack of forage, support for the herd management costs associated with replacement breeding animals.
Wildfire damages: costs to replace apiaries, bee colonies and beekeeping equipment lost in the wildfires; and costs to repair or replace critical infrastructure damaged by wildfire, not covered by insurance. “The devastation to B.C. ranches, their livestock and operations from this year’s wildfires and drought has been extensive,” said Kevin Boon, general manager, BC Cattlemen’s Association. “Experience from past wildfires has not been lost on the government. The announcement of this comprehensive AgriRecovery program will go a long way to assisting producers in their efforts to re-establish their operations and help them recover from the effects of this year’s debilitating events.” AgriRecovery is a federal-provincialterritorial disaster relief framework to help agricultural producers with the extraordinary costs associated with recovering from natural disasters. Eligible costs will be supported on the 60-40 cost-shared federal-provincial basis outlined under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
Peace region pest update Canola and Cereal Diseases Hello! I hope everyone has had a great summer! It is sure starting to feel like fall now. I just want to talk about some diseases that are commonly found and some that are becoming a concern in cereals and canola. In Canola of course one on the main disease concerns is clubroot. So far there has been no reported cases in the BC Peace, but there has been in places as close as Grande Prairie. Cells can live in soil for up to 17 years, some studies have found. Favourable environmental conditions that help disease development are warm, wet and acidic soils. Since clubroot causes galls to form on the roots, these galls become an inhibitor for nutrients and eventually water. Causing the plant to wilt and patches ripen prematurely. Another disease that causes canola to ripen prematurely is Blackleg. This disease caused massive economical damage around 20-30 years ago, however with a resistant cultivar, it became much less of a concern. However, it is starting to be seen more and more. The disease infects the plant early and causes a dry rot at the base and will eventually cut
off water and nutrient flow. In the Spring look for small dirty white spots on the cotyledons, foliage and stems. The Cereal diseases I will be talking about today are Smut and Stripe Rust. Smut is a seed borne disease that overwinters in the seed. The main sign is when the kernels start to have masses of black spores on them, and the kernels start to shrivel. Smut establishes itself in the embryo of the seed at flowering, as the seed matures it becomes dormant until planted the next year and then it begins to grow as the plant does. Smut is easily spread by wind and insects from neighboring infected fields. Stripe rust is an orange rust that runs linear along the leaf, and if enough of the leaf is covered then it can cause reduced surface area for photosynthesizing and moisture loss. However, is has not historically been shown to cause any economic significance in Canada. Hopefully this was valuable information for everyone, whether they already knew it! If you have any questions, you can contact pest@ bcgrain.ca! Tory Snider - Peace Region Pest Update

Severinski Farms began as a dairy when its founder Stephen Severinski immigrated to Canada from Yugoslavia in 1910. He purchased a twohectare (five-acre) parcel of land in Cloverdale. Having established himself, Steven invited Manda, his fiancée in Yugoslavia, to join him in 1921. They married the day after her arrival, which also marks the beginning of Severinski Farms on Sept. 12, 1921. In 1922, Stephen and Manda moved to Pitt Meadows where they purchased 16 hectares (40 acres). The dairy farm quickly expanded to 32.4 hectares (80 acres) where the main activities continue today. Stephen and Manda’s family grew along with the farm. The couple had 10 children. Their youngest, Harry, bought the farm from his parents in 1965. He and his wife Louise increased their land base to 48.5 hectares (120 acres), milking 60 cows. Within the family, ownership moved to their son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Audra Severinski, in 2000. They continue dairy operations on a larger scale with their son Brandon on 59 hectares (145 acres) of owned land and
another 40.5 hectares (100 acres) of leased land where they milk 160 cows three times a day. They are pleased and proud that Harry and Louise continue to be involved in the daily operations of the family farm. Three generations of Severinskis have maintained progressive, innovative practices on their farms. Their cows wear computerized leg tags, which monitor milk output and daily routines and alert the farmers on their cellphones when these patterns change. Smart, energy-saving water misters keep cows cool in the recently retrofitted dairy. New LED lights throughout the farm are cutting energy bills in half. Such practices help maintain the farm’s viability for future generations. This award honours the Severinski family’s tradition, work and dedication to dairy farming on the Lower Mainland and in B.C. Every Century Farm and Ranch Award celebrates the enduring sense of community and rich heritage that accompanies farming and ranching in B.C. Quotes: Lisa Beare, MLA for Maple Ridge-Pit Meadows said the farm is a pillar. “Of our community for the past 100 years, helping to keep our families healthy and our local economy strong. Congratulations on this amazing milestone!” Kevin and Audra Severinski, owners, Severinski Farms said they feel blessed. “Blessed that we are able to farm the same land our grandparents homesteaded 100 years ago. We are proud to continue to provide and produce quality milk to Canadians and look forward to the next generation continuing this legacy.”

Producers should be taking samples of each load as the crop is placed into storage to create a representative sample for each bin,’ explains Neil Blue, provincial crop market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘The goal is to have a sample that has the same characteristics as the large volume of product that it represents. Producers will then have a sample that can be used to shop around with various potential buyers.’ The samples should be stored in a sealed container to identify the source bin. ‘This container should keep out rodents and insects and preserve representative moisture content to maintain sample integrity. Some grain companies provide zip lock bags just for this purpose, which in turn, could be kept in a larger sealed container,’ he adds. One of the services of the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is the Harvest Sample Program. ‘It gives producers a free, unofficial grade on samples from the current year’s crop. Producers can submit samples of newly harvested crop prior to November 30 and obtain base grade information for their marketing at no charge. This program also helps the Canadian Grain Commission, the Canadian International Grains Institute, and grain buyers to better know, in a general way, the quality of the crop.’ Producers can learn more and sign up for the Harvest Sample Program online, over the phone, or email. The Commission sends participating producers a personalized kit, including postage-paid envelopes for the samples. Producers fill the envelopes with representative crop samples and mail them to the CGC.
The Harvest Sample Program can be used for cereal grains, pulses, canola, flaxseed, mustard seed and soybeans. The grading report includes the following valuable information that a producer can use in crop marketing: unofficial grade for each sample submitted dockage assessment on canola protein content on barley, beans, chickpeas, lentils, oats, peas and wheat oil, protein and chlorophyll content for canola oil and protein content and iodine value for flaxseed oil and protein levels for mustard seed and soybeans falling number for wheat and rye vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol or DON) levels for wheat, corn and barley ‘Individual reports remain confidential, but in collecting the grade information, the Commission can assemble and publish aggregated data on crop quality, useful to buyers and sellers,’ says Blue. Sign up for the Harvest Sample Program. Contact To connect with Neil Blue: Hours: 8:15 am to 4:30 pm (open Monday to Friday, closed statutory holidays) Phone: 780-422-4053

AB lamb prices continue to be strong ‘Year-to-date, the estimated live Alberta market lamb price, based off the rail, is averaging $286 per head (120 lbs live weight), up 11.7% from a year ago and 21% higher than the 5-year average,’ says Jason Wood, provincial livestock market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Lamb prices continue to be supported by robust demand and tight supplies.’ Alberta auction prices for light and heavy lambs have been trending lower, recently falling below year ago levels after recording market highs back in April. ‘Seasonally, prices tend to peak in June then trend lower in the second half of the year,’ explains Wood. ‘Besides seasonal price variation, high feed costs and a larger volume of live imported lambs are influencing the local feeder lamb market.’ Canadian live lamb and sheep exports in the first 7 months are 3,096 head, down 62% from 2020 and 42% lower than 2019. Live lamb and sheep import data for the first 6 months of 2021 lists 12,006 head coming into Canada, a significant increase from the reported 8,449 head imported in 2020. Previously, 2013 was the last time live imports were reported at these levels. Canadian lamb and mutton imports for January to July 2021 are 12,793 tonnes, marginally lower than 2020 but 1.8% above the 5-year average. In 2021, fresh/chilled lamb imports are up 8.8% from 2020, frozen imported lamb has increased 8.6% and processed lamb products are 148% higher. Mutton imports are down 47.2% in 2021 at 1,584 tonnes. ‘Globally, lamb and mutton supplies have tightened. Production levels in Australia and New Zealand are lower than historical
Serving the AB/BC Peace Country
averages, while demand continues to rise in Asia. Recovery of Chinese pork production would have the largest effect on global sheepmeat supplies; however, China’s hog sector continues to be affected by ongoing African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks.’ Chinese hog prices have declined in response to producer liquidation following ASF outbreaks earlier this year. ‘The decline in quarter 3 Chinese hog slaughter is supportive of stronger hog prices, but this hinges on imported pork volumes and Chinese pork demand. While pork prices have declined, Chinese demand for lamb and mutton remains strong.’ Global container turnaround rates have slowed due to rising COVID-19 variant outbreaks in several countries and weather related events. These disruptions, combined with an under-supply of containers has lifted container shipping rates to 4 to 10 times the typical price. While there are indications of softening global lamb prices, ongoing tight supplies and high container shipping costs may continue to offer domestic market support in the short-term. However, this is dependent on local supply and demand. ‘Overall, demand is expected to remain steady as we transition through the global economic recovery. Given the current market factors at play, it would not be out of line to expect the current price trend to remain supported this year. Moving into 2022, downward price pressure is expected as global lamb supplies slowly increase and pre-pandemic routines fully return,’ says Wood.

How to recognize pain By Dr. Carmen Schneider One of our challenges in Veterinary Medicine is that our patients can’t tell us that they are in pain and where it hurts. Animals often try to hide their pain making it even more difficult for us to recognize it. The other challenge is that there is a wide variety even within our species as to how readily they will show signs of pain. This means we have to pick up on subtle changes which is best done by you, the owner, as you know your pets intimately well. With any of our animals, a sudden change in behavior may be a sign of pain or other illness that should be investigated. Changes in appetite and thirst is also a good indicator that something is abnormal (pain, illness, stress, etc). A reduction in activity level is often a sign of pain – try to not just attribute this to old age. Any limp, favoring a leg, getting up and down slowly, or stiff gait generally indicates pain. Another general sign of pain in most of our species is a hunched walk or tucked up belly often indicating abdomen pain while back pain manifests as stiff gait, or trouble getting up and down. Dogs: The most common of our more subtle signs of pain is a decrease in activity or no longer wanting to participate in the same activities

they used to, such as fetch or playing with housemates. Limping on a leg is a sign of pain – it does not require a whimper or cry to be in pain while favoring a leg. A whimper or cry or refusing to let you touch them in a spot generally indicates a high level of pain in most our dogs. Licking a particular area constantly sometimes indicates pain as well. Dogs may show pain by having a hard time getting comfortable – getting up and down frequently trying to find a comfortable position. For back pain they will struggle to posture properly to defecate which can lead to constipation. Other more subtle signs of pain in dogs is an increased heart rate, panting when not exerting themselves, dilated pupils, changes in ear position from normal, “tightening” of facial muscles or blinking frequently. Cats: Cats are even more skilled at hiding their pain. The most common sign in cats is hiding away or sleeping in unusual spots and becoming less friendly towards housemates and humans. With orthopedic pain we also see them being unable to jump up on things. Inappropriate urination and defecation outside the litterbox can sometimes indicate pain as well if the litterbox is high and they are unable to access it or it is in a place that is hard to access (ex. Up on a counter). Growling and hissing when touching a specific spot are of course more obvious signs of pain and generally indicate quite severe pain. Changes in grooming pattern can also be a sign of pain in cats. Over grooming in a specific place (this is often on their belly) can indicate pain in certain cases while not grooming enough can also indicate not feeling well. Horses:
One of the most common scenarios that we see horses for pain related issues is lameness. Many owners are very adept at seeing lameness pain in their horses. Most people are also familiar with signs of colic (or abdominal pain): sweating, kicking at their belly, flank watching, wanting to lie down and roll, lack of appetite, and having trouble defecating. Other pain we see in horses can be tougher to recognize. Some examples are pupils being dilated, tightened facial muscles, increased breathing rate and effort, increased heart rate, grinding of teeth, pawing at the ground, swishing of the tail, or switching weight from side to side frequently. In horses, often behaviors that may be considered misbehaving, especially while being ridden, can actually be signs of pain. If there is sudden bucking, being very cinchy or refusing to listen to certain cues ruling out pain should be the first step. Dropping feed or in-appetence could indicate teeth issues. Cows/Other Ruminants: With any production animals it gets a lot harder to see behavioral changes associated with pain as we don’t spend as much time with them but chronic pain becomes a very real welfare concern. As with horses, lamenesses are generally an easily recognizable source of pain. Other signs include being isolated from the herd, laying down a lot, not coming to feed and water, not chewing their cud as regularly, tail flicking, kicking/foot stomping or grinding of teeth. Decreased milk production can also be a sign of pain. If you think you may be seeing pain in your animal, contact your veterinarian for more information and pain medication options.

Fall run & vaccinating your calves
Many studies have shown that preconditioned calves have a lower cost of gain at the feedlot with improved rates of gain and feed efficiency as well as lower treatment rates and death loss. Ideally, vaccines should be administered 2 to 3 weeks before weaning. Calves respond better to the vaccine when they aren’t stressed. Vaccinated calves will have protection during weaning and transport, a highly stressful time that can overwhelm the immune systems of unvaccinated animals. For more information about fall vaccine protocols, please contact our Large Animal reception team or ask your veterinarian.

Field selection for fall manure or compost application ‘There are several management considerations to make when deciding where and how to best utilize available manure and compost resources,’ says Trevor Wallace, nutrient management specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Knowing the rules and using the 4R Nutrient Stewardship principles (considering the right place, right source, right rate, and right time) helps to optimize nutrient use efficiency when applying manure or compost, while keeping nutrients in the field and reducing nuisance impacts on neighbours.’ When selecting the right fields to apply manure or compost, there are several factors one should consider including legislative setbacks, soil and field conditions, and future nutrient need. ‘Producers are required to take reasonable care to ensure runoff from manure or compost does not leave the field or create an inappropriate disturbance. Alberta’s Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) minimum setback requirements for spreading manure or compost need to be factored into both the field selection process and manure application plan.’ Setbacks help to reduce the risk of manure or compost leaving the land on which it was applied and to reduce the nuisance impacts of the application. Producers must: apply manure or compost at least 150 m away from neighbouring residences or other unowned occupied buildings when applying on directly seeded land or forage, keep 30 m away from any water wells, stay 10 m away from a common body of water if subsurface injecting, or 30 m away if surface applying, increase setback distances when the land sloping towards a water body increases with slope: 30 m for less than 4%, 60 m between 4% and 6%, and 90 m for slopes between 6% and 12%, and not spread on slopes equal to or greater than 12%. The right field will also be determined by considering the previous crop/forage, soil fertility, moisture conditions and current ground cover. Sandy soils, dry field conditions and limited ground cover significantly increase the risk for soil erosion. ‘Field conditions may not be suitable for manure or compost application if the AOPA requirement for incorporation is going to
GLENN STEWART HORSEMANSHIP Clinics & Camps Clinic Host Programs Demonstrations & Public Speaking Learning Holiday Adventures Front Row Seating Horse Development & Foundation Training
significantly increase the risk of soil erosion,’ explains Wallace. ‘AOPA rules state that manure and compost applied to cultivated fields must be incorporated within 48 hours from the time when it is first applied, unless operators have a permit that specifies a different incorporation requirement.’ Wallace adds in extreme cases where erosion is already an issue, operators may be able to protect the soil, at least in the shortterm, by spreading manure onto fields with no incorporation. Producers should contact the Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) if they are concerned about soil erosion in their fields, prior to spreading. ‘Producers should consider spreading on fields with forage or direct-seeded crops because these fields do not require incorporation of manure or compost and thus reduces the risk for soil erosion. In addition, producers can check with neighbours, who may be interested in the soil health benefits from manure and compost application, for access to fields that pose minimal risk to soil erosion and nutrient loss.’ Low moisture conditions, resulting in poor plant growth, means that there has been limited crop nitrogen (N) removal. Also little or no leaching means that unused fertilizer N remains in the soil from the past year’s
fertilizer application. ‘Unless we have an unusually wet winter and spring, this nitrate-N will be mostly available for crop use next year. The only way to know the availability of soil nutrients is to soil test and adjust manure and compost application rates accordingly to get the biggest benefit from your manure resources. The amount of carry over and future crop need should be a factor in field selection. ‘Considering these rules and 4R stewardship principles when choosing the fields for application will keep your soil healthy and nutrients in the field, not to mention, help you to get the biggest bang for your buck to maximize crop/forage potential and minimize costs especially during low moisture conditions,’ says Wallace. “With increasing costs and tighter margins, maintaining a high level of productive efficiency is needed to be profitable. Providing a balanced nutrition program is a big part of the management plan to meet these goals.” Barry Yaremcio
Wednesday, October 13th at 7:30pm Teepee Creek Stampede Association Annual General Meeting Lyons Production Services Events Centre
FEED TESTING IS CRITICAL TO MANAGE WINTER FEEDING PROGRAMS In dry years, forage yield is lower than normal because the plants are shorter than average. This results in a higher leaf to stem ratio. With leaves containing more protein and energy than stems; the quality of forages are typically higher in a dry year.
There will be 11 TPSA Board Members elected. The structure has changed for the Association. With the completion of the LPSEC, there was a need for an adjustment to the way the board was organized. We are more than a rodeo and proud of it!
To take advantage of the higher quality, a representative sample needs to be taken and submitted to an accredited laboratory for analysis. There are many different types of sampling tools, but the key is to get a representative sample. If sampling baled feed, probe the bales between the twines or wrap. This provides material across the many layers or flakes within the bale. Take 20 core samples from each different type of forage. If there are 100 bales off one field, go along the stack and sample every fifth bale to get a representative sample.
More information can be found on our Website.
Taking grab samples results in some of the fine stems, leaves, and flowers to be lost during collection. This can potentially reduce protein results 10 to 15% (11 to 9.3% protein), and TDN dropping from 62 to 57% or lower. If inaccurate information is used when balancing a ration, it is possible to spend an additional $0.50 per head per day when balancing a lactating cow ration. There are two different techniques available to analyze feeds. The wet chemistry method is considered to be the standard. Near Infrared Spectrometry (NIRS) is a newer technique. This is what is done when grain samples are checked for protein at the elevator. Either method of analysis is accurate when determining protein, acid detergent fibre (ADF), and neutral detergent fibre (NDF). Testing for macro and trace minerals is more accurate by wet chemistry. If minerals are done by NIRS, results can be off by as much as 300% depending on feed type, growing conditions and the equations used to predict the nutrient content.
The Lyons Production Services Events Centre (LSPEC) team in Teepee Creek, Alberta, is looking to hire:
Facility & Client Relationship Coordinator This person will be required to work 4-5 hours/day and most weekends; at times, additional hours may also be required. See Website for Details Under Job Postings.

2021 Alberta nitrogen prices
‘For Alberta producers it is a little early to be too concerned with fertilizer prices as the majority of applications occur during the spring planting season,’ explains Ryan Furtas, market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘However, fertilizer pre buy is always an option and in some instances, especially for urea, it can be taken home at any time.’ Comparing the cost per pound of ‘actual’ nitrogen, shows July urea at 60 cents per pound as the highest price in the past 5 years, 3 cents more than the May 2019 price of 57 cents per pound. For anhydrous, the July price of 53 cents per pound surpasses the previous 5-year high of 51 cents per pound in June 2017. The Alberta urea price during the spring season averaged 58 cents per pound, whereas the summer price has increased to 60 cents per pound. For anhydrous, the spring price averaged 50 cents

per pound, while the summer price has increased to 53 cents per pound. ‘The nature of fertilizer pricing is such that the retail nitrogen price increase during the spring application season did not fully reflect replacement values,’ explains Furtas. ‘Global demand for fertilizer remains very strong due to expanded acres of production and incentive to obtain higher yields and optimize on high agriculture commodity prices.’ Furtas adds producers are likely to experience higher prices for 2022 as higher production and transportation costs are firmly entrenched. ‘Until recently, nitrogen prices in Alberta appear to have been relatively insulated from global price trends. As long as agriculture and energy commodities remain at elevated values, higher fertilizer prices will remain or move higher,’ says Furtas.

Total AgriRecovery funding up to $500 million to support farmers facing extreme weather Late last month the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced that the Government of Canada has increased total AgriRecovery funding to up to $500 million to address extraordinary costs faced by producers due to drought and wildfires. This includes initial funding of $100 million announced on August 6, 2021. Given the extraordinary circumstances that farmers in Western Canada and parts of Ontario are facing, this increased funding ensures the federal government is ready to contribute to eligible provincial AgriRecovery costs on the 6040 cost-shared basis outlined under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. The Government of Canada and the governments of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario continue to work with the utmost urgency to complete joint assessments of the disaster and launch support programs. This will include direct assistance to affected livestock and agricultural producers, and
help them with added costs of obtaining livestock feed, transportation and water. Producers can also apply for interim payments under AgriStability to help them cope with immediate financial challenges. The Government of Canada and the governments of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario have agreed to increase the 2021 AgriStability interim benefit payment percentage from 50% to 75%, so producers can access a greater portion of their benefit early to meet their urgent needs. British Columbia and Manitoba have also opened up late participation in AgriStability to farmers who did not register in 2021 so they can benefit from this important income support. In addition to this support, the Government of Canada announced designations for Livestock Tax Deferral on July 22, 2021, and August 6, 2021, for prescribed drought regions in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. This will allow beef producers who are forced to

The Government of Canada continues to stand with farm families during this difficult time and is taking concrete action to respond. “Our Government is doing everything it can to support farm families so they can get through these challenges today, and be better positioned for a sustainable future. Today’s commitment of up to half a billion dollars shows we stand ready to contribute our share toward AgriRecovery programs with the provinces. We are united in our goal of ensuring that farmers are fully supported through this crisis,” said the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood Quick facts To date, the governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario have announced provincial commitments under the AgriRecovery Framework totaling up to $322 million.

Alberta has announced a commitment of $136 million. Saskatchewan has announced a commitment of $119 million. Manitoba has announced a commitment of $62 million. Ontario has announced a commitment of $5 million. An AgriRecovery assessment for British Columbia is underway, but details of its provincial funding commitment have not yet been announced. Using the 60-40 cost-shared basis, as outlined under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, the federal share would be up to $482.5 million, not including British Columbia’s planned program. The final
federal funding amounts will be for eligible extraordinary costs and will be determined once the joint assessments and program developments are completed. As the situation continues to evolve, the Government of Canada stands ready to take additional action as necessary to ensure farmers have the support they need. Producers have access to a suite of Business Risk Management (BRM) programs to help them manage significant risks that threaten the viability of their farm and are beyond their capacity to manage. AgriRecovery is a federalprovincial-territorial disaster relief framework intended to work together with the core BRM programs to help agricultural producers recover from natural disasters. AgriRecovery helps with the extraordinary costs associated with recovering from disaster events. AgriStability is one of the BRM programs under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. It protects Canadian producers against large declines in farming income for reasons such as production loss, increased costs and market conditions. While the deadline to enroll for the 2021 program year has passed, provinces may request late participation to make the program available to other producers during a crisis situation. An interim payment under AgriStability is based on estimates of a participant’s program year production margin and reference margin. To receive an interim payment, the participant’s estimated production margin must decline by more than 30% of their estimated reference margin. Participants can apply for an interim payment to access program funds early.

Alberta Beef Producers 2021 Annual report is ready The past 12 months have been another challenging year surrounded by serious issues that have deeply impacted producers. It has been a year focused on changing the face of ABP and building stronger connections. The Chair Report covers the work done to support producers through the drought, and ABP continues to explore options to provide producers with the resources needed to come out on the other side. This year began with significant contention around the Alberta government’s decision to rescind an outdated policy on coal production, leaving areas of the province open to coal development. ABP called for the government to reinstate the policy until appropriate public consultation was complete. The 1976 Coal Policy has since been reinstated and the government is in the process of widespread public consultation, with final recommendations due to the Minister of Energy by November 15, 2021. The ABP Annual General Meeting was held virtually in March and Melanie Wowk, a rancher and veterinarian from the northwest zone who previously held the Vice Chair position, was elected as Chair. Two new members were elected to the executive – Jason Hale as Vice Chair and Brodie Haugan as Finance Chair – from the 12 directors elected to the board by the delegate body. ABP as an organization has seen significant change over the last year, including some new faces on staff to reflect the new direction. Lindsay Westren and Debra Murphy joined the team to round out our marketing and communications, and more recently Trish Leo has come on-board to fulfill ABP’s administration needs. With a full complement of staff, we are focused on moving the organization forward. A new offering of communications tools has rolled out over the last year. Our aim is to provide a broad spectrum of ways for producers to connect and engage with ABP. Whether you prefer a magazine, website, app, or radio (and a podcast in development), we have a range of platforms for producers to choose from. Dates of note coming up
The September issue of the ABP magazine will feature articles on changing consumer trends, grazing through drought, and fall marketing practices. The first article of a three-part series looks into ABP’s fiscal situation to highlight some difficult discussions and decisions made by the Board of Directors. The current refund rate reflects the checkoff dollars being refunded, not the vast majority of producers who support our organization. It is our hope that through honest and transparent conversation, ABP will find a realistic balance of what the organization can do to best support the industry, with the resources we have available. These conversations will take place at the ABP Semi-Annual Meeting and Producer Town Hall, which are being held virtually on Thursday, September 30. The general session will run from 1-3 p.m. and will be followed by a town hall at 3-5 p.m. ABP is planning to host the 2022 Producer Meetings in-person at the end of January and beginning of February, with an option for online participation. A BP delegate nominations are open until midnight, September 30, 2021. As a delegate, you represent the needs and ideas of producers in your area, and keep them informed on the latest from ABP. If you are passionate about Alberta’s beef industry, 18 years or older, and have paid check-off in the last two years, consider running as a delegate in your zone. Elections will coincide with the 2022 Producer Meetings and voting options will be available in-person and online. Details will be included in the November issue of the ABP magazine. I would like to thank the Board of Directors for the time they have devoted to ABP through another challenging year. And the staff for their tireless commitment to supporting Alberta farmers and ranchers. Sincerely, Brad Dubeau ABP General Manager Check out the full report at www.albertabeef.org/producers/annual-reports

Calf market update and calculating breakeven prices ‘Calf prices typically follow a seasonal decline into the fall as the volume marketed increases,’ says Jason Wood, livestock market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Alberta steer calves have declined 7% in the last 7 weeks, averaging $220.83/cwt the second week of August, which is over $4/cwt higher than the same week a year ago.’ The Alberta steer calf market has ranged between $219/cwt and $237/cwt this year. Year-to-date, 500 to 600 lb steer calves are averaging $229.48/cwt, up 2% from 2020, 3.4% above 2019 and 1.9% above the 5-year average. average volume of feeder cattle at auction are expected to pressure calf prices into the fall’ explains Wood. Southern Alberta barley prices averaged $392/tonne in July, compared to $246/tonne a year ago. For the second week of August, southern Alberta barley ranged from $415 to $425/tonne. New crop barley bookings, delivered southern Alberta have recently been reported at $325 to $345/tonne, appearing to be capped by purchases of US corn. Buyers in southern Alberta have been actively booking US #2 corn with recent sales reported between $350 and $370/tonne for new crop delivery. ‘The cost of feed affects a feedlot’s willingness to pay or purchasing power for feeder cattle,’ says Wood. ‘The decline in southern Alberta feed barley costs of $47/ tonne between July ($392/tonne) and current new crop reported sales ($345/tonne) should be a net gain for calf prices. However, other factors such as the number of calves on offer and forward fed cattle prices will also affect prices. Deferred live cattle futures have been moving higher but a change in this trend could lead to additional downward pressure for feeder cattle.’ A look at breakeven pricing How does the current to new crop price decrease of $47/tonne for feed barley affect the feeding period and the price a feedlot is willing or able to pay for a 550 lb steer calf? Using the average volume of barley required to finish a steer calf to a fed weight of 1,325 lbs, the $47/tonne decrease in barley lowers the cost of gain by about $13/cwt. The lower cost of gain of $13/cwt implies that a higher price can be offered on a steer calf. In this case, a buyer’s ability to bid increases by about $19/cwt on a 550 lb feeder steer calf. All calculations assume a constant breakeven sale price for the fed (slaughter) steer. ‘But this estimate does not take into account that feedlot margins are currently below breakeven,’ says Wood. ‘Therefore, what is a feedlot’s breakeven purchase price for a steer calf?’ Pricing against the April 2022 live cattle futures contract, a July barley price of $392/ tonne, an 80-cent dollar and accounting for other finishing costs, the estimated breakeven purchase price on a steer calf works out to $207/cwt. August barley prices are averaging higher than in July. Using the same variables above, but changing the average southern Alberta feed barley price to $420/bushel as reported for the second week of August, returns a breakeven steer calf purchase price of $196/cwt. Using a new crop barley price of $345/ tonne, a steer calf placed on feed this fall and finished against the June 2022 live cattle futures has an estimated breakeven purchase price of $211/cwt. ‘These examples indicate there is little upside in the calf market this fall. Strengthening live cattle futures, weaker Canadian dollar, stronger basis levels or lower feeding costs would support stronger calf prices. However, current feed and market conditions suggest there is likely more downside risk on calf prices as we head into the fall run,’ says Wood.

We look forward to welcoming campers again next year!
Chetwynd library public engagement planned for October
Residents asked to put their internet speed to the test With the abundance of rural and remote areas in the Peace region, accessing reliable and affordable internet is an issue facing many residents and business owners. The Fiber Working Group (FWG) formed by the PRRD identifies these challenges as the number one issue impeding economic growth with high-speed broadband internet becoming standard for many Canadians and day-to-day operations. The PPRD is working to identify better options for high-speed Broadband Internet accessibility in homes, businesses and public buildings. The vision is to meet all needs for health, education, and economic development now, and into the future. To help the Regional District take the next steps, the public is encouraged to take the CIRA internet speed test.
Scan the QR code to take the CIRA internet speed test! The performance data gathered from this process will help provide a sense of which areas in the PRRD need connectivity, depending on their current load speeds or lack of. To register for updates on this project please visit haveyoursay.prrd.bc.ca.
Fall Clean-up returns to the PRRD The first day of fall is just around the corner. As your greenspaces change for the season, now is a great time to tidy up those tree clippings and yard debris. The PRRD is making disposal easy for the Fall Clean-up event happening October 4 - October 17!
The PRRD will be holding a community engagement session in October on plans for a new Chetwynd Public Library. The date will be confirmed soon. Be sure to register for an account on Have Your Say to be notified of project updates or visit prrd.bc.ca.
Next PRRD Board eetings:
During this time, district landfills and waste transfer stations have extended hours and all tipping fees for yard and sorted waste are waived. Please note that commerical, business and industrial waste will not be accepted. To view a list of accepted items or to review the hours and locations, please visit the garbage and recycling page at prrd.bc.ca or call the environmental services department at 250-784-3200.

ON THE
OPEN ROAD R0011490554
Central Alberta Route 7, Cochrane to Medicine Hat, The Adventures of Carla and Regan - Part II Five days, 1500 kilometers, a mother and daughter duo creating a legacy of memories to treasure, while exploring and discovering incredible points of interest, having adventures, touring galleries, shops and businesses. We spent the night in Okotoks at the Lakeview Inn & Suites. It’s a nice hotel, the rooms are bright, beds comfy. Breakfast was included and offered a good selection of fare. The hotel is laid out nicely and the décor reminiscent of the mountains. Find them at https://www.lakeviewhotels.com/okotoks/ Regan and I headed to Turner Valley, the home of Heartland. It’s a beautiful spot, quiet and cozy, with some fun stops like the patio at the Eau Claire Distillery. From Turner Valley, we headed to Black Diamond, where we took a selfie in front of the big black diamond, and visited the Black Diamond Gallery. It’s home to art imported from Bali, Turkey, Morocco & the Middle East. Regan and I found our perfect pieces, a life-size driftwood horse for me and a life-size driftwood dinosaur for her. It’s a great place to explore, with all price points, from the simple to the extravagant, and the stock changes regularly, it’ll never be the same visit. We made a stop at Longview, a real treat to explore. If you find yourself growing weary, stop in at the Longview Tales & Trails Campground to overnight. Then, head out to the Garside Wilson Gallery by Debra Garside and Donna Wilson. Debra received her new book, Wild Horses the very day that we stopped in, and has signed copies – you have got to stop in and pick up your copy. As well as Debra’s photographic art, there are several artists on display with bronze work,
watercolours and framed prints. Visit them at 134 Morrison Road, just off the Cowboy Trail. One of the challenges on the Rumble Alberta tour is to visit and photograph the last remaining grain elevators in the province. These sentinels of the prairie are now a rare find, and a treat. The Azure Grain Elevator is on the list, easy to find, and fun to find a unique angle to photograph. Be sure to stay off the property as it is on private property. It’s a chance to exercise your create photography muscles. High River is a town that feels like home. Whether it’s a visit to the Museum of the Highwood for a tour of area history, Heartland memorabilia and a selfie or a walk down to Maggie’s Diner for a quick pic, there is plenty to do here. High River is currently the site of filming for a Netflix series, Black Summer, and if you look hard enough, you’ll find some street signs that seem out of place, or you may even get to see live filming happening. Regan and I also completed a couple of challenges here, visiting the Royal Canadian Legion and checking out the local fishing pond as part of the kid’s fishing challenge. We stopped at Brant to photograph the working grain elevator, and along the drive, got a real sense of the Southern Alberta prairies, deer and antelope at play. The route along the highway took us to Vulcan, Star Trek central. The Enterprise monument is a must see, selfie nirvana! Across the street, visit the Tourism Center for a tour and photos, and grab an ice cream from the restaurant. Make a stop in Champion to visit the Legion as part of the tour Challenge. The History Check App will give you all the details you
need. Another meandering route will take you to Vauxhall, which is everything that stories of small town Alberta depict; small, quiet, little children playing free and with abandon. Visit the Legion, grab a photo, and continue your route. The next leg of the drive is a long one, following a meandering route through pasture and prairie, hills, bridges and valleys. It’s a land of cattle, irrigation and antelope, and a pretty tour. As you come up to Redcliff, take a drive through the picturesque town and locate the legion for the second last Legion Challenge of Route 6. A short jaunt will bring you to Medicine Hat, famous for being one of the sunniest cities in Canada. Our stay here was at the Comfort Inn and Suites, and here, we received maybe the best, most personalized service we’ve ever received at a hotel. Christina, Operations Manager, was welcoming, friendly, and a fount of information. The rooms are clean, modern and decorated with local art. The bathrooms – wow – roomy and clean – and the shower heads are so far beyond what one would expect at a hotel. The TVs have Chromecast, a nice change to the standard cable fare. The pool is much larger than most hotels and has a hot tub for parents to relax while the kids play. Breakfast fare consisted of omelettes, bacon and potato wedges, better than any continental breakfast I’ve had. If you are camping, check out the Gas City Campground, 402 11 Ave SW, Medicine Hat. The following morning, we visited Badlands Harley, a family owned and operated business.

Cochrane to Medicine Hat, The Adventures - Part II This visit was a real treat, as we got to ride a Harley Trike, chauffeured by owner Ivan. Badlands Harley has a large showroom with a variety of motorcycles and trikes on display, and a special Bike of the Week highlighted
each week. As well as the bikes, there is a wide variety of apparel, boots and helmets to peruse. The shop is open and welcoming, and has a spot for a weary traveller to stop for a break, a coffee and a visit. Ivan, his family and
staff are there to welcome you. Find them at 923 2 Ave #3Km, Dunmore. Make a point of touring Medicine Hat and checking out the sites, stores, restaurants, and the World’s Largest Teepee, constructed for the 1988 Winter Olympics. Don’t forget to find the Legion, the last on this leg of the tour. Tour 6 of the Central Alberta Rumble Alberta Tour has so much to see, it could take more than the five days we completed it in to truly explore at a leisurely pace. This tour is comprehensive, a chance to explore small town Alberta at its best. It’s perfectly set up for a bike tour, family vacation, or friend’s trip, checking out the galleries and museums. Regan and I spent five full days together, exploring, adventuring, supporting local businesses and artists. We also did something even more priceless, unmeasurable. My 18 year old daughter and I created a chapter in the legacy of our life together as a family, we made positive memories that will live in our memories for years to come. The Rumble Alberta Tour is so much more than a road trip app. It’s a carefully curated roadmap in support of our province; it’s been created not only to support small businesses and points of interest in rural Alberta, but to create a chance to create memories to treasure for years to come. Harvest is my favourite season Last night as hubby and I drove into town, we could see the dust from many combines making their way through fields of grain, one perfect row after another. As a child of a farmer, it boggled my mind how Dad could keep the lines so straight. We did have a fancy machine, but our ‘fancy’ only equated to an enclosed cab, a CB radio that Jessie could use to call into the base station with a panicked, “Dad, I am stuck!” and an 8-track machine. It is important to note that Jessie managed to find the only low, wet spot in the field. Harvest is my favourite season. I love the changing colours and smells. I love the way the leaves crunch under my feet and, most of all, I love when the mere site of combine dust triggers my brain to recall simpler times. Harvest time was busy in our household. Mom would be busy pulling everything from our large garden and getting it stored for winter and Dad would be busy in the fields. My sisters and I would be ‘helpers’ which could mean a quick trip to town to get a tobacco can of grain tested or spraying off potatoes with the garden hose so they could dry in the sun before tossing in the cold storage. Everyone in the small community was busy doing exactly the same thing – rushing to get the grain off the fields. We were bonded through a common purpose and little things like 12 year olds driving into town, the seat pulled up as close to the pedals as possible, a pair of coveralls under the butt to get some height so that the road was visible enough as they pulled into the station with a can of grain to get tested, was not seen as out of place or worrisome in the least. Hard to believe that these days I worry about my grandchildren’s car seat being installed properly or that the clasp rests securely across their chest – not too high and not too low. I digress. The point was that we were all busy getting our grain off the fields and time was never on a farmer’s side. You got busy when you could get busy and you didn’t stop until it was completed. Imagine this flurry of activity and my 39-year-old father suffering a massive heart attack. September 14, 1978 while my mom drove my sisters and I to school, my Dad found himself with a chest crushing pain and all my wee baby sister could do is sit beside him wondering what was happening. Mom returns to find Dad on the floor and bing, bang, boom the rest is history. He survived, but was not in any shape to complete the harvest. This is where the magic happened. Friends, family and the community of
farmers stopped what they were doing and came to our farm to get the last of the grain off of the fields. Maybe this is when I developed my love of the sight of combine dust! So many combines working side by side to get the grain off and safely inside the grain bins. I will never forget that time in my life. I will never forget the assistance our family received from the community. Small farming communities have a bond unlike anything you could imagine. Maybe that is why I like living in Northeastern British Columbia – we are a little bit city and a little bit rural, bound together by the doctrine of selflessly helping our friends and neighbours.
