32 years of empire building at Sexsmith Farm Parts Continued from previous “I feel great, it was all my decision. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right time in my life to make it,” Kiddine said. Instead of serving the customers and clients he’s come to know for the past three decades, Kiddine will be spending his time on his own farm, with his family and parents, and on a small-business he runs out of his home.
“That’s a big disappointment, not being able to keep in touch with your clientele that you built over 32 years. All the customers, the staff and employees we’ve had, they’ll be missed.” Kiddine said working at Sexsmith Farm Parts has been one of the best decisions of his life. “To leave here is hard. The company came from nothing, nd we built an empire out of it.”
“I’ll actually be busier,” Kiddine said when asked if he’s looking forward to some extra downtime.
Over the past three decades Kiddine has witnessed first hand the drastic change in the farming industry.
“Sometimes you spread your wings too thin. That’s kind of been my problem, doing a little bit of everything and a lot of nothing,” Kiddine joked.
“As the farming industry has gotten bigger, so has the machinery. At the same time, there are fewer and fewer farmers, farming more and more acres,” Kiddine said.
Kiddine said the hardest part of leaving the store is not being able to stay as in touch with his clients.
“We had to change to where the business was going. If farmers went to bigger combines, that’s what we had to bring in. Farming with a 410 (Massey Ferguson Combine) compared
to modern combines is a whirlwind of change. GPS wasn’t heard of 30 years ago, and we’ve come such a long way from selling the old, ancient parts to the modern technology today.” Sexsmith Farm Parts used to deal more in land tillage tools, and farmers would spend a lot more hours on tractors. Now, that’s changed completely. “There is zero tilling now. Guys used to wait until the season dried up, but now farmers want to harvest right away. Farming is much more of a science these days, and more of a fulltime thing,” said Kiddine. Heading into his last day on the job was bittersweet for Kiddine. “It’s been a whirlwind here the last couple weeks. I’m torn to leave, but the goal is ahead of me. You see the light, and hopefully I’ll be able to accomplish some of the things I want to.”

Use soil tests to take advantage of a challenging year
By Warren Ward The principles of 4R nutrient management include a couple of jobs that could be done in the fall. One is soil testing – a relatively easy practice that doesn’t require a large investment. The other is fall banding of nitrogen – if fall application is part of your fertilizer system. Soil analysis is useful every year, but may be especially useful this year if yields were less than expected. Results should show higher nutrient reserves and lower required fertilizer rates for 2022.
SUNSET CUSTOM HARVESTERS
Soil test tips Collect fall soil samples once the soil has cooled to at least 10°C. Cool soils reduce the microbial activity that can mobilize nutrients. By waiting until this activity slows down, the soil test result will be a more accurate indicator of nutrient levels next spring.

One composite sample per field can provide a general impression of soil nutrient levels. For the composite, take 15-20 sub-samples from the most productive areas – not hill tops, not low spots, not saline areas. Before blending these sub-samples to make the composite, divide each core into two or three soil depths and put them into separate pails. Three suggested depths would be zero-tosix inches, six-12 inches and 12-24 inches. Two depths would be zero-to-six and sixto-24. With the 15-20 sub-samples separated

by depth, blend those samples to create one composite sample per depth. Submit each depth in its own sample bag. For more precision, sample based on common zones within the field. Zones are generally based on productivity differences, often the result of soil characteristics, drainage or elevation. Three zones could be hilltop, mid-slope and low-lying areas. Follow sampling methods described above for each zone. This could mean up to nine samples per field (three depths for three zones), but this method can provide meaningful results for fields with higher levels of soil variability, and can point to the value of variable-rate application. This approach may also provide some insight into yield variability exacerbated by drought conditions in 2021. Variable-rate systems can be complicated, but they don’t have to be. For a low-tech option, growers could dial down nitrogen rates while passing over low-producing areas like saline areas and hill tops, or areas that have higher levels of residual nitrogen following a challenging year. 4Rs for fall fertilizer application The four Rs are “Right Source at the Right Rate, Right Time, Right Place”. Right Source. When making a fall application of nitrogen, the best sources are urea or anhydrous ammonia. Urease and nitrification

tips for fall fertilizer application
inhibitors can reduce the risk of loss. Ask the fertilizer supplier about options. In fall, avoid nitrogen sources that contain nitrate, such as UAN, as there are higher losses associated with this more mobile form of nitrogen. Right Rate. This is where the soil test comes in. For canola, we encourage a rate specific to the needs and yield potential of each field. If fertilizer blends specific to each field are not logistically possible, apply the blend at different rates to match the yield goal for each field. Right Time. While spring is the ideal time from a 4R perspective, fall application can be a good plan B if logistics make it a challenge to apply enough nitrogen in spring. Make fall applications after soil temperatures have cooled to less than 10°C on well-drained sites and even cooler in high-moisture areas. Cool temperatures significantly reduce losses by
reducing the rate of change from ammonium to the more loss-prone nitrate form. Before fall applications this year, note that soil disturbance will reduce the snowtrapping capacity of stubble heading into winter. This moisture could be valuable after a dryer-than-normal year. Also, if soils are too dry to provide a proper seal of the band, you may need to wait for better conditions. Right Place. 4R recommends sub-surface bands to reduce losses that can occur with surface applications. This is especially true for fall applications. Band at least two inches deep and space bands no more than 18” apart for cereals and oilseed crops.
–Warren Ward is an agronomy specialist and fertilizer lead with the Canola Council of Canada. Email wardw@canolacouncil. org
Before banding, consider soil moisture. Banding in dry soils can also increase gassingoff losses because soil does not provide a proper seal on the band. For anhydrous

ammonia application into dry soils, go deeper (four inches or so) into moisture to reduce losses. Banding in wet soil conditions can also increase losses if the soil does not close well over the band. Surface spreading of nitrogen fertilizer in the fall can lead to major losses. Broadcast nitrogen should be incorporated, which will require greater soil disturbance, or include urease and nitrification inhibitors (as described under “Right Source”) to reduce those losses. Once soils freeze or become permanently snow covered, nitrogen should no longer be broadcast, even when using an enhanced source.

New Agronomy Cente By: Samuel Peprah, Manager & Research Coordinator Mackenzie Applied Research Association What’s a research project without the people and tools to do it in the most northerly agricultural region in Canada? This is the challenge facing the agricultural community (the last areas of large-scale agriculture expansion) in the north peace of Alberta due to its relatively isolated region; there is no other research and extension capability and Ag consulting. Mackenzie Applied Research Association (MARA) is filling the gap nicely since the closure of the Ag Canada Research Station at Fort Vermilion, Alberta over 25 years ago. MARA’s advancement in applied research for northern crops and farming practices have resulted in increased total acreage of cultivated land and the total number of farmers which have attracted investment in the region (Richardson’s Pioneer building a new thirty-million-dollar high output elevator in High Level). This substantial and rapid growth provides both opportunities and challenges. Based on local needs assessment and Alberta government shift in policy to farmerled research, MARA identified sustainable capacity building as a priority that will contribute to the growth and resiliency of the agricultural sector (41% of Alberta’s total organic operations) in the region and western Canada. With support from Western Grain Research Foundation (WGRF) through the phase II capacity, MARA received $ 300,000 in addition to an equal amount contributed by the local producers to construct a multi-use building to
accommodate an Agronomy Center And Repair/ Workshop. The Agronomy Center is a 6600 square feet wood-framed building. The exterior and interior walls are metal-clad with concrete floors. The building shares a mechanical room with heating being high-efficiency boilers and furnaces. Sixtyfive percent of the space is the agronomy section and the remainder being the workshop. The Agronomy Center was commissioned by Hon. Dan Williams, MLA Westlock-Peace River Constituency, together with Josh Knelsen, Reeve, Mackenzie County, and Greg Newman, MARA’s Board Chairman. on August 4, 2021. The MLA spoke on “the need for research and investment of

er in Fort Vermillion
agriculture in the north Peace of Alberta”. Mr. Greg Newman, MARA’s Board Chairman, addressed the audience that “the opening of this facility marks a milestone in Ag research in the County. The event was honored by Scientists and representatives from the Grain Commissions, Results Driven Agriculture Research, and industry players from the AgriBusiness Firms. The event was attended by over 120 farmers, Scientists, and industry players. The Agronomy Center would provide a base for agriculture research on the station. It would provide a home for equipment used in agriculture research, such as quality testing machines, sample drying ovens, seed counting
equipment, seed treating, etc. It would also provide room to process samples coming in from the trials and storage of these samples as needed. As part of the Agronomy section field offices will be included to allow external researchers (i.e.; postgraduate students, universities, and other organizations) the ability to do research on-site or in the region. The facility will provide a base for scientific research and knowledge transfer to local producers through demonstrations and extension events (varieties suited to northern climates, regenerative agriculture to improve soil health, crop quality, cropping systems, and best management practices to increase profit). In addition, the facility would strengthen on-ground action and innovation by supporting peer-to-peer learning and knowledge transfer among farmers. This potentially would lead to the emergence of local appropriate technical innovations. Having farmers at the center of research changes the focus of the research to one that is more valuable, sustainable, and innovative. Training sessions will be based out of the facility to inform and demonstrate to farmers the need to assess the nutrient and microbial content of their soils and how this transfers to yield and quality of produce. Although some of the researchbased here will be unique to the region most through collaboration, will be beneficial to all of Western Canada. The machine repair shop would allow staff to maintain the existing equipment, fab or modify specialized plot research equipment, and incorporate a wash bay to prevent the introduction or spread of noxious weeds and diseases such as Clubroot in Canola.

The magnificent 7 elements in the saddle Whenever I’m playing with my horses I try and be very conscious of what is working and what isn’t. Or what is working a little and what is working a lot. It is easiest for the horse and the human to break everything down into understandable, trainable portions. Separate the individual elements get each working a little, and then a lot, so we can start putting them together.
barely.
In this case, I’m referring to what I call the 7 Elements, these are what we need to have working to move the horse or parts of the horse, separately at first and then many times together and at different speeds and gaits.
I check out the elements at first standing in one spot and asking for each element separately. This is the easiest for the horse and rider to manage but many horse and rider teams are unable to do these 7 Elements standing still and with the use of their reins. When I say standing still I mean they are not trying to accomplish these things at a walk, trot, or canter. All these things should be able to be done at all gaits and most going backwards as well. If I can manage the elements standing still, then I want to know how many I can ask for without the reins. Next I want to know if I can ask for them at the walk, then the trot and finally the canter. For example, can I ask for lateral flexion at each gait and come to a stop, keep riding straight ahead or on a circle. So from lateral flexion at the stand still to possibly cantering on a circle being able to ask for right or left flexion without interfering with the canter. If these elements work at all gaits separately then it is time to see if any 2, 3, or 4 of these elements can work together at the same time with or without reins. Here is an example of a horse in motion with five of those elements combined.
These 7 elements are the first things I check out on a horse when I get on. I want to know how many of the elements work and how well they work. The less they work or the worse they work, the more I know I won’t be able to do with that horse and the worse the ride is going to be at that point in time.
These 7 Elements are: • Lateral flexion - being able to bend your horse’s neck left and right without the feet moving and when you ask the feet to move, on a straight line or on a circle. • Vertical flexion – being able to ask for the horses nose to come in, the neck to get round from the withers to the pole when you pick up the reins, standing still or when moving. • Hindquarter control – Being able to move the hindquarters right or left separately from the forequarters when standing still or when moving. • Forequarter control – being able to move the forequarters separately from the hind, standing still or when moving. • Sideways – being able to move the horse sideways in a straight line as well as when moving forward. • Backwards – being able to ask a horse to back up on a straight line, in an arc, or a serpentine. 1. Cantering on a right lead (forward), • Forwards. At one point I considered 2. Lateral flexion to the right, there to be only six elements because I 3. Vertical flexion nose in, neck and back thought obviously all horses go forward. Then rounded, I remembered all the emails, letters and people 4. Half passing right (sideways), I’ve seen ask their horse to go forward and the 5. Hindquarters leading. horse kicks out, bucks or goes forward but

What you would be looking at or asking for is a horse that is cantering forward and sideways with a bend in the neck to the right, head in, neck round, and the hip a bit ahead of the shoulder. Much more difficult or advanced would be able to do that same picture without reins or head gear of any kind. The sky is the limit as they say with what we can do with our horses and how much we want to know. The bare minimum from a safety perspective is to have the 7 elements working at a stand still. Then as many as possible at the walk and trot. The faster you want to ride the more of these elements should be working, and if they all work well at any gait you will have safe enjoyable rides and be able to do most any thing you would like with your horse. Canadian Agricultural Partnership Water program There are two types of project streams available to producers under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership Water program: onfarm irrigation projects and on-farm water supply projects. On-farm irrigation projects help improve the efficiency of existing on-farm irrigation systems which can save producers water and energy costs. Grants for these efficiency improvements can be used to purchase system upgrades such as sprinkler nozzles, pump modifications, control panel upgrades, and variable rate irrigation equipment or the purchase of new on-farm systems to replace older, less-efficient ones. On-farm water supply projects assist primary producers to effectively and efficiently manage their on-farm water resources to ensure access to water supply is available.
Under this stream, there are two categories of projects. Standard incentive projects include new or expanded water sources, such as wells, dugouts, spring development, cisterns, and unshared pipelines. Special incentive projects help protect the long-term viability of water supplies, including well decommissioning, well pit conversion, and wetland assessments. Eligible expenses will be cost-shared at 25% grant and 75% applicant, except for special incentives, which are cost-shared at 50% grant and 50% applicant up to various maximums depending on the stream. The Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a 5-year, $3 billion federal-provincial-territorial investment in the agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products sector that began in April 2018. In Alberta, it represents a federalprovincial investment of $406 million in

Dog versus porcupine, a clear winner every time Many owners of dogs with high prey drive know all too well that when dogs and porcupines meet, good things don’t often come of it. Porcupines are an elusive species that are common here in the Peace Region, yet many of us don’t know about these critters and how they can impact our pets’ health. Porcupine interactions with our dogs can result in an emergency scenario that requires the immediate attention of a veterinary team. Porcupines are large, herbivorous rodents whose name literally means “quilled pig”. It is no surprise that they have gotten their name from their unique defence mechanism. These quills are actually specially adapted hairs covered in a protein called keratin, the same protein that makes our fingernails strong. They are not aggressive, but they happily defend themselves, their offspring, and their dens if needed. Many people hold the misconception that porcupines can shoot their quills - in reality, they have hooked barbs which lodge into the tissue of a perceived threat on contact. Doing so helps the porcupines escape predation and live another day, but the tale is not such a happy one for the animal on the other side of the fight. In addition to being a painful experience, there are some pretty serious health complications that can result from being quilled by a porcupine. Because of the little barbs on the porcupine quills, they tend to move deeper into the body rather than working themselves out. As a porcupine quills migrates, it carries bacteria with it and can cause abscesses or cause systemic infection. This can result in complicated treatment and can even be fatal. So what do you do if your canine companion ends up on the losing end of an interaction with a porcupine? Here at Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic, we are happy to help. When your dog comes to the clinic after being quilled, they’ll be seen by a veterinarian who will conduct an exam to make sure that there are no additional concerns to consider while addressing the porcupine quills. Your dog will be sedated and provided potent pain medication, so that they can be comfortable and still for the quill removal. This is an
do not learn from their mistakes. The best way to have your dog not be quilled by a porcupine is to avoid allowing your dog to roam unsupervised at dusk or after dark, and prevent them from going into areas with known porcupine dens. Written by Brock Chappell, Fourth Year University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Student, Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic
essential part of the process. Without sedation and pain management, your dog will be very painful and will struggle against the efforts to help. This can result in the quills lodging deeper into tissues and even breaking off. Athome quill removals gone wrong are often the result of not having the ability to properly medicate your dog. Once a dog is sedated and comfortable in the clinic, the veterinary team gets to work inspecting every inch of the dog from nose to toes, searching for quills. They have a pesky habit of getting into hard to reach places, like the tonsils or in between teeth. All quills that are found are fully removed and another head to toe check is done. When the veterinary team is confident that they have gotten out everything they can, your pup will be woken up and be ready to go home. It’s likely that you’ll continue to give antibiotics and pain medication for some time to help your dog pull through this critical period. When addressed in a timely manner, these emergency visits usually have a happy ending and a good chance of avoiding serious complications. If your dog is quilled, getting them into the vet as soon as possible is very important to help avoid serious complications. Equine Cushing’s Syndrome
Cushing’s Disease is a disease most often seen in older horses. It is also called PPID (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction) and is caused by improper functioning of the pituitary gland. Typical symptoms include increased drinking and urination, loss of muscle mass, excessive sweating, a pot bellied appearance and most commonly a very long course hair coat that fails to shed out in the summer. Horses with Cushing’s disease have higher risk of getting infections (tooth root and skin infections) and developing laminitis (or founder) leading to lameness. We can diagnose it with a blood test and there is a medication to treat Cushing’s. See our website for links to more info!

Canada-Alberta Livestock Feed Assistance Initiative (CALFA)
On August 6th, 2021, Alberta Premiere Jason Kenney announced relief for livestock producers through AgriRecovery in the form of the Canada-Alberta Livestock Feed Assistance Initiative, or CALFA, to help with extraordinary feed costs incurred by Alberta livestock producers as a result of the 2021 drought. AgriRecovery is a federal-provincial-territorial disaster relief framework that has been in place to help agricultural producers deal with extraordinary costs associated with recovering from natural disasters. Eligible costs through the program are cost shared on a 60-40 basis between the federal and provincial governments. The CALFA program is being administered by AFSC. Applications for the CALFA program will be accepted in two stages – the first of which is currently open to applications. In order to be eligible for the program, producers must be 18 years of age, report farm income on their Alberta taxes, be responsible for primary care of breeding stock, and have a Premise Identification Number. They must also have an ASFC ID. Eligible stock under the program are only breeding females, and must be grazing animals. Species eligible under the program include; beef cattle, horses, bison, sheep, llama, goats, alpacas, elk, deer, yak and musk ox. A minimum of 10 head is required in order to be eligible for funding. Bee hives are also eligible under the program in some scenarios – please contact AFSC for more information on the eligibility of bees under this program. Ineligible stock includes non-breeding females such as feeder cattle and bulls, as well as non-grazing livestock such as hogs, poultry, and dairy cows. Total compensation for the program varies with the species:
Species Horses Cattle & Bison Elk, Yak & Musk Ox Deer & Llama Sheep, Goats & Alpaca Bees
Initial Payment $113 per head $94 per head $47 per head $24 per head $19 per head
Secondary Payment $127 per head $106 per head $53 per head $27 per head $21 per head
Total Payment $240 per head $200 per head $100 per head $51 per head $40 per head $7.50 per hive
Initial Payment Eligible participants with 10 or more eligible animals can now apply for the initial payment. Applications are available online through AFSC Connect, or paper applications will be available at your local AFSC Office. For this initial payment, producers will need to supply their Premise ID, and their inventory of breeding females as of August 6th. No receipts will be required for this initial payment. Application deadline for this initial payment is Sunday, October 31st. Secondary Payment The secondary payment covers additional extraordinary costs over and above the initial payment, to a maximum as laid out in the table above. The secondary payment will be based on inventory of eligible stock as of December 31, 2021. The application for this secondary payment will be available closer to the end of the year. The secondary payment will be calculated using a ‘Feed-Need Calculation’, supplemented with proof of expenses. The Feed-Need Calculation is broke down in the graphic below. This calculation will determine the how many extra days you had to feed your stock compared to a normal year due to the lack of grass. Proof of grazing days may be requested to accompany this calculation.
In addition to the Feed-Need Calculation, there are some expenses that are also eligible to claim under this program. Eligible expenses under the secondary payment include: feed, temporary water provisions, temporary fencing, transportation costs related to hauling feed, water or animals, pregnancy testing, and any other activities required to secure feed supplies to maintain the breeding herd. These expenses will be paid back to producers up to 70%, or until the maximum of payment of $200/beef cow has been reached. All expenses under this program must have been incurred between August 6th and December 31st of 2021. Copies of receipts will be required for the above mentioned expenses. Audit Process Random audits and inventory verifications will be conducted on this program. Participants who are unable to provide proof of expense, or claimed inventory higher than what they actually have on hand will be required to repay any funds that have been paid out. Questions If you have any questions about the Canada-Alberta Livestock Feed Initiative, or need to get registered with an AFSC ID, please contact AFSC directly at your local Branch Office, or call 1-877-866-2372.

Applications for funding will be available between Sept. 30 and Nov. 9, 2021. “The Hazelnut Renewal Program has been extremely valuable in encouraging the growth and regeneration of the hazelnut industry in B.C. The demand for local products continues to increase, and new growers will be needed to help keep up,” said Steve Hope, president of the BCHGA, hazelnut grower and coowner, Fraser Valley Hazelnuts Ltd. Cornel Van Maren, secretarytreasurer, BCHGA, and hazelnut grower agreed. “Hazelnuts can be a good industry long term, but you need to put in the work to get them established. Start with good trees, nurture them and they will be into production before you know it.” The Hazelnut Renewal Program has $100,000 for removing EFBaffected trees, planting new orchards or completing strategic sector projects aimed at increasing the sector’s competitiveness. The BC Hazelnut Growers Association (BCHGA) is comprised of approximately 40 growers from throughout the province. These growers collectively represent 40.5 hectares of new and established orchards. B.C. farmers grew nearly 16 tonnes (35,066 pounds) of hazelnuts in 2020. Hazelnuts are a plant-based source of protein and are waterefficient crops, which support climate adaptation strategies and overall agricultural diversification in the province.

Hazelnut growers in the province are being offered help planting new trees or removing infected ones through a new intake of the Hazelnut Renewal Program. The program is revitalizing the B.C. hazelnut sector, supporting the dedicated people working in their orchards and encouraging those looking to begin a new career in hazelnut production. Growers with planting or removal projects between April 2021 and December 2021 are eligible for this program. “B.C.’s hazelnut industry is a hidden gem, and it’s very encouraging to see it growing steadily these past few years as a result of our hazelnut renewal program,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “The program directly supports our growers while promoting local food security, and I look forward to seeing how these latest projects help regenerate our hazelnut orchards.” For several years, the British Columbia hazelnut industry has been battling against eastern filbert blight (EFB), which had affected hazelnut crops in the province. Since the program began in 2018, growers’ response has increased tree-planting areas throughout B.C. Previously more concentrated in the Lower Mainland region, hazelnut acreage has since spread to the Okanagan, Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Gulf Islands. Renewal programs have resulted in 38,780 new trees planted on 73.7 hectares (182 acres) and the removal of approximately 4,795 infected trees from 17.2 hectares (42.5 acres).

Dr. Surya Acharya receives 2021 Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research And Innovation An innovative and industry-engaged forage breeder has been granted the 2021 Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation. Dr. Surya Acharya received this award today at the 2021 virtual Canadian Beef Industry Conference to recognize the positive impacts of his research on beef industry advancement.
industry challenges, such as his AC Oxley II and AC Veldt cicer milkvetch varieties, both of which are much quicker to establish than predecessors. Similarly, he assisted in the development of the online Forage U-Pick tool, which aids western Canadian producers in choosing appropriate forage species for their operations.
“Dr. Acharya is respected and appreciated by academics and producers alike,” said Matt Bowman, chair of the Beef Cattle Research Council and a producer from Thornloe, Ontario. “His work addresses real industry obstacles with solutions that consider producers’ needs through direct communication with stakeholders.”
Dr. Acharya’s most recent project aims to enhance the lipid content of legume vegetative tissues to improve their energy content for grazing livestock. Using conventional and genomic breeding techniques, his team has been able to select for plants with approximately five percent lipid content, compared to virtually none in the original plants. His project will have environmental benefits by using conventional breeding to reduce methane production through increased digestibility, which will allow western Canadian alfalfa producers to export to nations that avoid the GMO designation.
Dr. Acharya is a research scientist and forage breeder at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in Lethbridge, Alberta, where he specializes in breeding legumes. His current research focuses on developing new cultivars of legume species with improvements in yield, nutritional quality and persistence, among other traits. His unique approach to plant breeding incorporates a consideration of multiple factors to best serve the needs of end-users, including beef producers. Indeed, many of Dr. Acharya’s past cultivars are appreciated for their practical use in solving
“This project is another example of Dr. Acharya’s commitment to offering practical benefits to industry through consideration of a variety of important factors, making him an exemplary recipient of the Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation,” Bowman added.
To best address industry needs, Dr. Acharya has actively sought out producer input through attendance at a variety of industry events and by directly asking for feedback through agricultural media. He is actively involved in industry and academic conferences and regularly publishes producer-targeted articles detailing his recent work. He also has offered his time to multiple journals, as president of the International College of Nutrition from 2005 to 2007 and as the current chair of the Alberta Forage Industry Network. As the author of more than 180 scientific manuscripts, five books, eight book chapters, 16 review articles, and contributions to more than 285 other publications, he is an expert at communicating with both producer and scientific communities. While Dr. Acharya has received much recognition for innovations in forage breeding, perhaps his greatest accomplishment has been developing more than 25 commercially released perennial forage and native grass species. His native grass cultivars are still used in reclamation projects, while his legume varieties have helped producers mitigate bloat risk and solve challenges with salinity and hardiness.

Diagnosing pesky forest pests The new Alberta Forest Pest Diagnostic System will help landowners determine the most likely pest problem based on the type of tree and the symptoms they see. Once the problem is determined, the website provides more information about the pest and what can be done to manage it. ‘This website brings tree health right to your fingertips,’ says Tom Hutchison, senior forest health officer with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘When you’re looking at a damaged tree, you input the information right in front of you, like discoloration or puncture holes. Everything is in the Alberta context. We’re focusing on the trees and pests found right here at home.’ The information can be useful
for a broad spectrum of people, including homeowners and farmers. ‘You could use it to identify pests affecting trees in your backyard, and farmers can use it to help manage pests affecting their shelterbelt trees. For many pests, management options are included. We’re hoping to show homeowners that in many cases there are a variety of pest management options other than pesticides,’ adds Hutchison. The dynamic tool will continue to be updated with new pests or management options. Users are also welcome to provide feedback on the site. “With increasing costs and tighter margins, maintaining a high level of productive efficiency is needed to be profitable. Providing a balanced nutrition program is a big part of the management plan to meet these goals.” Barry Yaremcio
OPTIMIZING USE OF WINTER FEED SUPPLIES
With high feed prices this fall, it is important to get the most out of the cattle rations as possible. Preventing feeding losses reduces the overall cost of feeding the herd and can increase the number of animals that can be kept on farm.
Peace View Colony Sheep Farm
Knowing the quality of the feed, size, and stage of production the cows are in makes it possible to blend higher quality hay or silage with straw to stretch feed supplies. Feeding a straw-grain ration pre-calving is also an alternative. Working with a nutritionist can make the most of the feed that you have to provide a balanced ration to the animals. Feeding systems can alter what the cows eat, how much they waste, and the nutrients that are consumed. Ring bale feeders can have 3 to 14.6% waste depending on design (Buskirk et. al., 2003). Preventing the cows from pulling hay out of the feeder and dropping it onto the ground is key to reducing waste. Once the hay is trampled upon, the cows will not eat the forage.

Bale processors and bale unrollers are common methods used to feed cows. When cows are fed in the field, there are times when feed is delivered onto snow. Physical feed losses can be as high as 19% when a bale processor is used, and 12% when bales are unrolled. Up to 75% of the lost material is less than 18 mm or ¾ of an inch in size. (Yaremcio, 2009). When cows walk over the windrow, leaves and flowers are shattered off the stem and are trampled into the snow. This can result in protein losses up to 22% and 26% of the Calcium. These losses can be prevented by placing the feed into fence line bunk feeders or portable feeders. To prevent or to minimize losses, a portable bunk feeder out of drill stem pipe and rough planks is an option to reduce waste. A feeder that is 28 feet long, 5 feet wide and 2.5 feet tall has sufficient space to hold a 1400 pound bale of hay or greenfeed. This will supply enough feed for approximately 40 cows. To prevent cows from getting into the feeder, the bottom should be narrower than the top so the cow cannot get a foot down inside the feeder and be able to climb in. Harlan Hughes from North Dakota State University in the mid 1990’s calculated that a dollar ($1) reduction in winter feeding costs increased net profit of the operation by $2.48. Considering the increased costs associated with feed, equipment and labour, the current rate of return would be much higher. Reducing feed waste could help improve the bottom line. Field selection for fall manure or compost application There are several management considerations to make when deciding where and how to best utilize available manure and compost resources,’ says Trevor Wallace, nutrient management specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Knowing the rules and using the 4R Nutrient Stewardship principles (considering the right place, right source, right rate, and right time) helps to optimize nutrient use efficiency when applying manure or compost, while keeping nutrients in the field and reducing nuisance impacts on neighbours.’ When selecting the right fields
to apply manure or compost, there are several factors one should consider including legislative setbacks, soil and field conditions, and future nutrient need. ‘Producers are required to take reasonable care to ensure runoff from manure or compost does not leave the field or create an inappropriate disturbance. Alberta’s Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) minimum setback requirements for spreading manure or compost need to be factored into both the field selection process and manure application plan.’
Redesigned. Restyled. Ready for what’s next.
Setbacks help to reduce the risk of manure or compost leaving the land on which it was applied and to reduce the nuisance impacts of the application. Producers must: apply manure or compost at least 150 m away from neighbouring residences or other unowned occupied buildings when applying on directly seeded land or forage, keep 30 m away from any water wells, stay 10 m away from a common body of water if subsurface injecting, or 30 m away if surface applying, increase setback distances when the land sloping towards a water body increases with slope: 30 m for less than 4%, 60 m between 4% and 6%, and 90 m for slopes between 6% and 12%, and not spread on slopes equal to or greater than 12%. The right field will also be determined by considering the previous crop/forage, soil fertility, moisture conditions and current ground cover. Sandy soils, dry field conditions and limited ground cover significantly increase the risk for soil erosion. ‘Field conditions may not be suitable for manure or compost application if the AOPA requirement for incorporation
is going to significantly increase the risk of soil erosion,’ explains Wallace. ‘AOPA rules state that manure and compost applied to cultivated fields must be incorporated within 48 hours from the time when it is first applied, unless operators have a permit that specifies a different incorporation requirement.’ Wallace adds in extreme cases where erosion is already an issue, operators may be able to protect the soil, at least in the short-term, by spreading manure onto fields with no incorporation. Producers should contact the Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) if they are concerned about soil erosion in their fields, prior to spreading. ‘Producers should consider spreading on fields with forage or direct-seeded crops because these fields do not require incorporation of manure or compost and thus reduces the risk for soil erosion. In addition, producers can check with neighbours, who may be interested in the soil health benefits from manure and compost application, for access to fields that pose minimal risk to soil erosion and nutrient loss.’

Pest Management Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a decision-making process for managing pests in an effective, economical and environmentally responsible way. This approach can be used for managing pests on crops, livestock, in natural areas and on private property. IPM can include preventative and cultural practices as well as the use of physical, biological and chemical controls. When the use of chemical controls is warranted and appropriate, pesticides are a commonly used management tool. What Are “Pesticides”? A pesticide is any substance or mixture of substances that is intended to prevent, destroy or repel any pest. Pests can be insects, mice or other animals, unwanted plants (weeds), fungi, bacteria or viruses. The term “pesticide” is an umbrella term for various different types of chemicals, grouped into the type of pests they target. Herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and
rodenticides are all different groups of pesticides that are specific to the type of pest that they control. Within each group, there are different types of products that have specific modes of action that work in different ways to control the pest. For example: Herbicides: » kill plants by disrupting or altering one or more metabolic processes, specific to plants, » have different modes of action, or ways that they kill plants, so not all herbicides will work on all plants Insecticides: » kill insects by disrupting their nervous system, damaging their exoskeletons, repelling them or controlling them by some other means » usually target one or more species of insect Fungicides: » target fungi including rusts, blights, and sometimes mold and mildew » work in a variety of ways, but most of them damage fungal cell membranes, or interfere with energy production within fungal cells It is important to understand that not all pesticides are alike – the various different types of pesticides have distinct chemical differences, different modes of action, and different effects on different organisms.

Invasive species are the second greatest threat to global biodiversity after habitat destruction. As such, British Columbia’s land managers working to protect the province’s natural biodiversity, are tasked with the management and control of invasive species. Without the use of pesticides, invasive plants and animals can have significant negative impacts to wildlife habitat.

ON THE
OPEN ROAD R0011490554
Rumbling Northwest Alberta by Craig Oldfield Ridin’ Alberta My first full day in Grande Prairie had started off with a meeting over breakfast with Renee Charbonneau, the director of the Canadian MotorcycleTourism Association. We mostly chatted about why I was brought to Northern Alberta and how I would go about promoting the region as a destination for two wheeled tourism. I’m not new to the tourism game since I graduated with an Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership degree from Mt. Royal University and spent the last 6 years as a “local” guide in the Canadian Rockies. After sorting out a few details Renee and I set out for one of the local motorsports shops where we would meet Chase. A 20 year resident and an avid motorcycle rider with plenty of experience riding one of his many bikes on almost every backroad around. Chase and I discussed a few options and after getting the rest of the day off to go out riding with me we set a meeting time and place. Having a planned ride with a local to guide me made me very happy since by now I was itching to get out of town and see some new countryside. I of course was running late and my tardiness was compounded when I realized I didn’t bring my
preferred riding gloves and had to make a pit stop at one of the bike shops to grab a new set. I hated to make Chase wait but it took a couple minutes to choose new gloves since you need to get the gear that not only fits but also feels good. Riding gear is kind of like hockey equipment in that equipment needs to feel just right, almost to the point of being superstitious. Luckily I had found a perfect fit and so off we went on our exploration of some gravel backroads south of Grand Prairie. Once off the highway and onto the secondary gravel road Chase and I stopped and decided I would lead since I usually ride a bit slower than he does and this allowed me to set a comfortable pace. He said he would catch up or overtake me at any important intersections or spots where he knew we could get some good photos. So off we rode. A few minutes down the road he did exactly that and signaled left as we crossed the bridge over the Simonette River. We pulled our bikes right up to the bank and managed to get some nice shots with the river as our backdrop. It’s easy to take great photos anytime you have streams, lakes, mountains, valleys and other wild places in the background. All things we have an abundance of in our beautiful province. Once we felt we had exhausted every
possible angle and had a quick drink we set off again. Back on the bike we now found each other’s rhythm. Each rider has a different style and it can take a while to adjust to riding with someone new but this time we feel into the same groove quickly. Our duo now moved quickly on the hard packed gravel and the miles sped by. There aren’t too many roads in this area that lead off of these main arteries so sticking to the “right” road is fairly easy and after another stop and about an hour of riding we made a turn signaling our halfway point. We made two more stops on this windy section of our route called the Canfor 2000 road. One of them was at a campsite along the banks of the Smoky River which again offered up ample opportunity to get some great photos. After leaving the campsite we
only had a little more gravel to ride until we hit the pavement that would lead us back into town. Once on the hardtop we could open up the bikes and Chase took the lead. He led me onto a twisty little backroad on the edge of town and after a couple more grin inducing corners we had arrived back in Grand Prairie. Being back in civilization and dealing with the traffic made the day’s journey feel that much sweeter. It really was an awesome way to spend my first afternoon of riding in the North Country. Once he dropped me off at my hotel and l I thanked Chase for being such a great guide. With that he tore off and headed for home. Just one more great person that I have met (and will hopefully ride with again) simply because I ride a motorcycle. #RumbleAlberta www.rumblealberta.com #GrandePlan

Hello Cattlemen. We realize that 2021 has been a struggle to say the least. With input costs and the price of hay at all time highs it may be time to consider some low maintenance cattle. This unique herd of shorthorn cross cows should lower your feed costs dramatically. There are lots of 1200 lb good uddered sound females that should get through the winter on a lot less feed than todays traditional herd. These are hard working cows and when you look at the 24 heifer calves selling, it should give you a good picture of their producing, abilities. From Peace River go north on Weberville road for 15 km to Hwy 886. Cross Hwy 886 and carry on north for 10.6 km to Mora Rd. Turn west and go 2.7 km to farm on north side of the road. Increased funding to support farmers facing extreme weather to complete joint assessments of the disaster and launch support programs. This will include direct assistance to affected livestock and agricultural producers, and help them with added costs of obtaining livestock feed, transportation and water. Producers can also apply for interim payments under AgriStability to help them cope with immediate financial challenges. The Government of Canada and the governments of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario have agreed to increase the 2021 AgriStability interim benefit payment percentage from 50% to 75%, so producers can access a greater portion of their benefit early to meet their urgent needs. The Government of Canada continues to stand with farm families during this difficult time and is taking concrete action to respond.

Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced that the Government of Canada has increased total AgriRecovery funding to up to $500 million to address extraordinary costs faced by producers due to drought and wildfires. This includes initial funding of $100 million announced on August 6, 2021. Given the extraordinary circumstances that farmers in Western Canada and parts of Ontario are facing, this increased funding ensures the federal government is ready to contribute to eligible provincial AgriRecovery costs on the 60-40 costshared basis outlined under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. The Government of Canada and the governments of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario continue to work with the utmost urgency
