Land match program is hooking people up Farming is an industry that has gone through as many changes as any other. These days, it’s thought to be the work of large farming corporations, or farming families, passed down through generations. However, the BC Land Matching Program has been working to change that in recent years. The BC Land Matching Program is operated through Young Agrarians, with funding from the Province of BC and regional funders. It’s a free program designed to match prospective farmers looking for land with land holders looking to lease their land for farming purposes. Starting in 2016 in the MetroVancouver and Vancouver Island areas, the Land Matching Program came to the Northern BC region in 2019, with three matches — in Pouce Coupe, Fort St. John, and Fort Nelson — to date. “We have a lot of people looking for land up in the Dawson Creek and Fort St. John area. They are looking quite frequently to move here from Southern BC and Alberta, with some having farming experience and wanting to get back into it, and others who are brand new to farming,” said Morgan Kitchen, land matcher with Young Agrarians. Kitchen said she and other
Certificate of Recognition
land matchers provide “a hands on and personalized support to facilitate inquiries and people looking for that match, finding the person who has the land available, bringing them together and going through the lease agreement.” According to Kitchen, new farmers face barriers in accessing knowledge, land, and capital. There is lots of land out there to be farmed and used, but many land holders are still unaware of the Land Matching Program, or of how effective it can be.
COR SAFETY Taking your safety program to the next level? You may already be on the path to COR.
“Some land holders using the program may be retiring, or are just too busy, but they don’t want to see their land sit as it has great potential. They know it would be great to have someone else working on the land, and we are helping bring those two parties together,” said Kitchen. So far, the program has made 165 matches, with 16 of those (totalling 1,687.5) acres) taking place in the North Central Region, which covers a vast area from Central B.C. up to the Yukon border.

Grande Prairie win propels Jake Gardner into Top 10, focused on PBR Canada Finals of people I know cheering me on,” Gardner said. Gardner entered the PBR Grande Prairie BuckWild ranked No. 26 in the national standings, and left with 96 national points, rocketing him into the Top 10 at No. 9, according to PBR Canada. He is now 109.83 points behind No. 1 ranked Dakota Buttar of Kindersley, Saskatchewan. With four PBR Canada Cup Series events left on the 2021 schedule, Gardner has his sights firmly on qualifying for the PBR Canada National Finals in Edmonton, November 12 and 13, and winning a national title. The top 25 qualify for Edmonton, and with the 96 points from Grande Prairie, and chances to add more at Medicine Hat, Calgary, and Saskatoon over the coming weeks, it’s looking good for Gardner to have a shot at his goal.
It was only fitting that Jake Gardner won his career-first PBR Canada Cup Series event in Grande Prairie, a place very close to home, and one where he has had success before. Gardner, who has ties to both Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, was the only rider to go a perfect three-for-three at the PBR Grande Prairie BuckWild event, posting scores of 82, 83, and a championship round-best 89 points, according to PBR Canada. Gardner also finished second in the accompanying 5/5 Bucking Battle with an 84.5-point score that earned him Ride of the Night honours. “I’ve had some good luck at rodeos there in the past couple years, and my first big pro rodeo win was in Grande Prairie. I always feel good when PBR events are there, it was my closest event to home this year, and it was pretty great to get up and ride in front of a lot

“Hopefully I’ll win a few of these events, place well, and be good to go at Edmonton and put a couple solid rides together,” he said. Though this was Gardner’s first Canada Cup series win, he has won a couple of Touring Pro PBR events in Canada before, which are a level just before the Canada Cup. “I’ve been trying to get one of these wins for the past couple of years. It’s one of the highlights of my career so far,” Gardner said. Heading into the winter, Gardner is hoping his efforts at the American pro rodeos last season earned him entry into more rodeos down South when the pro rodeo season starts in January. Riders need to place in the top 40 in the previous year’s events to qualify for the following year. Email sports reporter Dillon Giancola at sports@ahnfsj.ca

Olfactory Stimulation in Cats By Dr. Joana Varga
Many of us look for new ways to enhance the quality of our indoor cat’s lives. Olfactory (smell) stimulation is stimulation caused by smell only. Smell is often an overlooked method of entertainment and environmental enrichment for domestic and wild cats kept indoors. Environmental enrichment plays a big role in the captivity of big cats and even our own domestic house cats. Commonly, catnip (Nepta cataria) has been a main source of stimulation in domestic and even wild cats. There are many alternatives to catnip as not all cats respond to it! How does catnip work? Catnip works is by releasing chemicals called allomones. Allomones are chemicals released by plants to either attract or deter prey or predators. These alllomones released by catnip cause a euphoric effect on domestic and wild cats. The specific chemical in catnip that causes euphoria in cats is called Neptalactone and it only causes these euphoric signs in cats only by smell. How does your cat respond to catnip?

The ability to react to catnip is hereditary and is a dominant trait in cats. Typically cats respond to catnip by rolling, biting, smelling, licking or rubbing their head, chin and cheek all over the catnip object. These behaviours are commonly accompanied by drooling or kicking the catnip with their hind feet. Unfortunately, not all cats respond to catnip and apparently only 1 in 3 domestic cats respond well to catnip. In the wild, tigers are more sensitive to catnip than jaguars, lions and leopards. Most cats after playing with catnip or honeysuckle will be very tired. This side effect of sleepiness can last for 2 hours. Alternatives to catnip: For the cats that do not react to catnip, there are many alternative plants that cause the same reaction catnip does. These include honeysuckle, silver vine and valerian root. Honeysuckle (Lonicera tartarica) is a plant that contains a natural chemical very similar to catnip. The leaves, flowers and berries of honeysuckle is toxic to cats, but the woody part is what is used to make toys and sprays. Reactions of this are similar to cat nip but also include chasing around invisible prey, growling, kneading. Cats will also sleep after being exposed to honeysuckles like catnip. Cats need to be sexually mature for them to respond to honeysuckle (over 6 months of age).
attractants compared to catnip, so it is more potent in its effects. Silver vine in the form of powder, causes the same euphoric reactions as catnip and honeysuckle, but its effects are stronger and can last from 5 – 30 minutes. Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) is a plant with a very pungent smell. The roots are chunky full of sticks. The smell is described as earthy like or old socks. This plant has been used for many years in humans as a medicinal calming herb. It was discovered that valerian root causes the same behaviours of catnip when cats commonly ran off with valerian tea bags. This root is safe for cats to smell or to accidentally ingest. Since it is not metabolized by cats, there is no risk of addiction, withdrawals or long lasting effects. Cats can be given valerian root in a few ways, typically it is chopped into small pieces, making the scent stronger, sprinkled onto the floor or in a reusable toy. With valerian root, because it is so strong in smell, a little bit goes a long way.
Silver vine (Actinidia polygama) is a climbing plant commonly found in the mountains of Asia. This is commonly used in Japan as a cat stimulant. This plant has 2 types of cat

Sugar beets: economic importance labour income impact of $18.19 million. In total, sugar beet farming generates 1,824 jobs annually, 793 direct jobs (335 full-time and 458 temporary) and 1,031 secondary jobs. The corresponding economic impact from sugar beet processing was estimated at approximately $144.65 million, including a total GDP impact of approximately $112.50 million and a wage or labour income impact of approximately $32.15 million. In total, sugar beet processing generates 326 jobs annually, 182 direct jobs (90 permanent and 92 temporary) and 144 secondary jobs. ‘This report demonstrates that even though the sugar beet share of total harvested provincial crop acres averaged 0.1% in the last 10 years (2010 to 2019), it accounted for approximately 1% of Alberta’s agri-food GDP and approximately 2% of crop production GDP annually,’ says Laate.

The Economic Impact of Alberta’s Sugar Beet Industry study shows the industry contributes almost $250 million to Alberta’s economy annually. ‘Sugar beet is a high value crop grown on irrigated land in southern Alberta,’ says Emmanuel Anum Laate, senior crop economist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Although on average, sugar beet share of Alberta’s total harvested crop acres is small, it contributes significantly to Alberta’s crop production and agri-food Gross Domestic Product (GDP).’ Annually, the total economic impact of Alberta’s sugar beet industry (direct, indirect and induced) was estimated at approximately $248.61 million. This includes a GDP impact of over $198 million and a wage or labour income impact of approximately $50 million. By sector, the annual economic impact from sugar beet farming was estimated at $103.96 million, comprising of a GDP impact of $85.78 million and a wage or

Helping with safety expenses
BYOB
Farms that employed seasonal workers from other parts of Canada are eligible to receive support for some of the costs they incurred to keep their workers safe and ensure British Columbians could enjoy local fruits and vegetables this summer and fall.
With independent nutrion consultant BARRY YAREMCIO
The B.C. Seasonal Domestic Farm Worker COVID-19 Safety Program offers farmers up to $2,000 reimbursement for onfarm expenses that helped farms comply with COVID-19 health and safety measures between April 1 and Oct. 31, 2021.
“With increasing costs and ghter margins, maintaining a high level of producve efficiency is needed to be profitable. Providing a balanced nutrion program is a big part of the management plan to meet these goals.” Barry Yaremcio
LIMITATIONS OF GRAZING STUBBLE FIELDS
The program compensates expenses for sanitation priorities, such as the purchase, rental or scheduled cleaning and disinfecting of handwashing stations, bathing and laundry facilities, and bathrooms, portable or compost toilets, as well as cleaning, disinfecting and sanitization products used to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. It also offers reimbursed costs for infrastructure expenses that helped workers stay on-farm during their employment period,
With forages in short supply and high priced; anything that can extend the grazing season and use home grown feeds will reduce winter feeding costs.
such as cooking facilities, shelters for shade and rain, and added WiFi access to worker areas. Approximately 1,500 to 2,000 seasonal workers from other parts of Canada help harvest B.C. fruit and grapes in the Okanagan and Creston areas each year. The B.C. government has worked with fruit growers to ensure COVID-19 health and safety guidelines have been met at designated worker camps near Oliver and Summerland since 2020, as well as offering support for on-farm camping in the Okanagan and Creston Valley, all to help keep people safe and support B.C.’s economy and food security. Straw bunches for grazing. (Photo credit: Barry Yaremcio)
Straw and chaff can have variable quality depending on the amount of grain and weed seeds thrown over by the combine. Wheat, rye, and tricale straw typically have the lowest protein at approximately 4% and energy at 40% Total Digesble Nutrients (TDN). Barley straw tends to be a bit beer with 4 to 5 % protein and 42 to 45% TDN, and oats can be beer quality with 4.5 to 5.5% protein and 44 to 47% TDN. Pea straw is one of the best when it comes to protein, usually 2 to 3% higher than the cereal straws but has the same energy content as barley or oat straw. Canola straw is typically not used for grazing, but is suitable. A 2:1 mineral in many cases does not supply sufficient amounts of calcium and magnesium. A 3:1 or 4:1 mineral may be required.
A healthy immune system equals stronger cattle with greater weight gains.
Add CattlActive® to your program today!
Low quality straw limits grazing due to high fibre content. It may be necessary to provide supplemental hay, silage or grain. A pregnant cow in mid pregnancy requires 55% TDN and 7% protein. If protein is not adequate, feed intake can be reduced because it can take longer for the feed to pass through the digesve system. A lack of energy will result in the cows mobilizing fat to meet the demand. A cow losing weight and becoming thin prior to winter increases maintenance energy requirements and will require more feed to keep warm.
GARLIC OPTION AVAILABLE FOR INSECT CONTROL
There are many opons to supplement extra energy and protein When comparing opons, three items must be considered:
D
1) Is it cost effecve? 2) Does the supplement meet the nutrional requirements of the animals? 3) Is it convenient to use? There are many different products available to use as supplements. Some are free choice and others can be limit fed once every 3 days. Use what works for your situaon. For addional informaon on feeding cows with limited feed, contact Barry at 403-741-6032 or by email at bjyaremcio@gmail.com.

Raspberry growers reap new replant funding New Raspberry Replant Program funding will make growers in B.C. more competitive, while increasing the bounty of raspberries in the province for fruit lovers. “By helping growers with planting costs, we’re helping them advance their businesses and giving people more chances to enjoy B.C. berries,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “This program will support local families and companies, and make the meals, days and memories of British Columbians that much sweeter in the years ahead.” The goal of the Raspberry Replant Program is to revitalize the raspberry industry with raspberry varieties suitable for fresh and individually quick frozen (IQF) raspberry markets. The $300,000 program will help growers plant raspberry fields and go to strategic sector projects aimed at increasing sector competitiveness. Applications for the Raspberry Replant Program will be accepted from Oct. 12 to Dec. 6, 2021, to support the Spring 2022 raspberry planting season. “The B.C. raspberry industry
greatly appreciates the continued ministerial support for the Raspberry Replant Program. This program will be imperative in helping raspberry farmers grow varieties that are better suited for the fresh and individually quick frozen markets, ultimately ensuring that high quality raspberries continue to be grown and sourced locally in British Columbia into the future,” Jordan Alamwala, raspberry grower and chair, BC Raspberries. “The British Columbia raspberry community is excited to hear about the renewed commitment for the raspberry replant program from the British Columbia Minister of Agriculture. This program will continue to ensure that our province will provide quality raspberries to Canadians and that our province will continue to be a leader in the fruit industry,” added Paul Sidhu, raspberry grower and vice-chair, BC Raspberries. British Columbia is the largest raspberry-producing province in Canada and leads the nation in the sales of raspberries with most of the production in the Fraser Valley. B.C.’s raspberry marketed
production in 2020 was 5,149 metric tonnes from 950 hectares (2347.5 acres) of cultivated area with a farm gate value of nearly $14 million. 2020–21 was the first year for the Raspberry Replant Program, which received $103,000 as part of the Province’s economic recovery plan, StrongerBC.
The program provided costshare funding for 12 producers and 18.6 hectares (46 acres) of new raspberries in B.C. Written by Brock Chappell, Fourth Year University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Student, Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic

Underage wild sheep harvesting adds up in northeast BC
PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT WITH A PRAIRIECOAST INSPECTION
The PrairieCoast inspection (PCi) is your end-of-season inspection, and it's your best way to: • Protect your investment • Maximize your resale value • Ensure optimal performance for your next season • Defer Payments with John Deere Finance JDMU
Conservation officers in northeast B.C. have seized seven stone sheep in the Fort Nelson region so far this season after failing compulsory inspection.
Receive a 2 year / 400 hour warranty on Large or Small Ag equipment that have completed PCi related repairs. Coverage includes installed Ag John Deere parts, and John Deere A.&I. parts.
Conservation Officer Jeff Clancy has been in the Northern Rockies for more than two years now, and says the rams were brought to him in August.

More Uptime. Less Downtime. Better Return.
“The majority of them were because they didn’t meet the legal definitions of full curl, that was by annuli or the actual age. Some of them did meet age, but had other issues, like failing to remove edible portions,” said
Clancy. “Every year we do try and educate the public. The Wild Sheep Society and other nonprofits do a fairly good job. We also put on seminars on how to age sheep in the field.” Regulations in B.C. stipulate that wild sheep can only be legally harvested when they are eight years of age or full curl, meaning that the tips of the horns have to go past the bridge of the nose when viewed from the side. Annuli are growth rings found on a ram’s horns and can indicate the age of the animal, but rams often have false rings.

Hello I am Harlan Giesbrecht, back again for the September report for the Beatton Community 4-H club. Today I will tell you all about what happened through-out the 4-H summer. The Beatton Community 4-H club has done quite a lot since my last report in June, such as achievement days and the 4-H show at the Dawson Creek Fall Fair. In early July we had our club achievement days in Cecil Lake at a member’s farm. The farm had stalls and a nice riding arena, and it was the most ideal place we could find and it was a blast. We had to do our achievement days privately, because of the Covid-19 restrictions, but we all still had a blast even though it rained one day. The day we did our trail ride it was nice and sunny, so we went on a nice warm long trail ride. This summer’s Dawson Creek Exhibition was super fun. I only showed in the 4-H show but I still had fun, even if I had to wake up at five-thirty in the morning. The show started at nine with showmanship class, then western pleasure, then western equitation, then finally the English riding classes. Even though I don’t ride English it was still fun to watch. Our club did really well and we got multiple firsts, and my sister with her miniature horse got 3rd place in the showmanship class. Even the judge said it was cute. I am not sure how the club did for the English part, I didn’t watch that far into it (I went to the fast food and lemonade stand), so... yeah,
I’m not sure, but I think we did pretty good. At the North Peace Fall Fair our club had many members compete in the light horse show. Not me this year. No, I did the goat show this year, mostly because it was cold that morning and I’m weak, so I did something else. It was a great learning experience and I am glad I did it. I also entered Lego and my rabbit and a chicken, and a budgie (parakeet). To improve my horse training abilities, I have enrolled in an eight-week colt training program with 4-H yearling project Fiddler. Fiddler and I are learning so much, and I can’t wait to show him and do 4-H with him next year. It is very beneficial for a horseman or any other person training animals to do clinics (lessons with animals) to learn more about what they do. Whether it’s riding lessons, ground work, or massage therapy for animals, it’s all important to learn these skills so you can become a better animal trainer and rider. Most horse riders and trainers have the most fun spending their time in the saddle on a trail or in a show; I know that is my favourite pass-time. I recently saw a quote that I totally agree with: “There is no hour of life wasted that is spent in the saddle” — Winston Churchill — Harlan Geisbrecht, Beatton 4H Club Reporter.

Spotlight Public engagement ramping up for Chetwynd Public Library project The Chetwynd Public Library is a hub of the community, providing services and programs to residents since 1959. Over the years the library has grown in order to meet the public’s needs, but the building has reached the point for replacement. The District of Chetwynd, Chetwynd Public Library Board and staff, and the PRRD have been working together on this project since 2016 and are pleased to present it to the community. An open house highlighting the features of the new library will be hosted on November 3rd, 2021 at the Chetwynd Public Library from 3pm to 7pm.
Feedback needed on Official Community Plan The draft of the proposed new North Peace Fringe Area Official Community Plan (OCP) is now available for public review. An OCP sets out the future vision for an area and sets a framework to guide decision making on land use planning matters including where new growth and development will be directed to, what uses are permitted and how areas will be protected for things like agriculture, recreation and the environment. The current OCP was approved in 2009 and the draft document will look to replace that existing plan with a forward looking document. To review and leave your feedback visit haveyoursay.prrd.bc.ca/np-ocp.
Next PRRD Board eetings:
North Peace Leisure Pool offering exciting public incentives to mark anniversary milestone The North Peace Leisure Pool will celebrate 25 years of service to the residents of the Peace region this Tuesday, October 26. To commemorate the event, the North Peace Leisure Pool Commission voted in favor to host a free swim, 25% off monthly passes and 25% off all merchandise offered at the facility on this day. The North Peace Leisure Pool opened in 1996 and is proudly owned by the Peace River Regional District and operated by the City of Fort St John. The facility offers many aquatic programs such as fitness, community first aid, advance aquatic leadership programs, swimming and water safety instruction.
The facility is also home to the Inconnu Swim Club. No pre-registration is required to participate in the celebration; residents simply need to visit the pool from 6am to 10pm on Tuesday, October 26 to take advantage of the special offerings.
Province launches engagement for Taylor bridge options The Province of B.C. is hosting two virtual open houses on Oct. 13 and Oct. 21 to discuss the future of the Taylor bridge alongside an online form to collect feedback from the public. Residents of the PRRD are strongly encouraged to make sure their voices are heard by taking part in these engagement opportunities before the close date of November 15. Visit engage.gov.bc.ca/taylorbridge to register and complete the form.
Peace region residents show they care about being FireSmart The first regional FireSmart program for the Peace has wrapped for the 2021 season, aiming to build resiliency through public education and community engagement. The PRRD Board of Directors approved the campaign in April of this year, with the consultant contract awarded to local wildfire experts, Craig and Mitch Wilson from Mammoth Forestry. Over the spring and summer months the FireSmart team conducted 122 property assessments for rural residents, delivered educational materials to 592 homes in highrisk areas and 750 gardening guides, created a strong community presence at 10 public Ember at the DC Rodeo events throughout the region including the Dawson Creek Rodeo and applied to have One Island Lake certified as a FireSmart neighbourhood. While the peak period for wildfires is over, residents are encouraged to continue their fire safety learning journey by visting firesmartbc.ca during the winter months.

A dream come true By Renee Charbonneau AKA Belt Drive Betty Photo supplied by Bob Ross Two Hills Alberta is like most rural communities in our province. It’s small, only 1,400 people, it has a number of really good restaurants and a great golf course and it’s very much in the heart of farming country! They won the first ever Canada’s MOST Rider friendly Community Contest held by the CMTA (Canadian MotorcycleTourism Assoc.) back in 2015 Home of the Run to the Hills Memorial Rally, Two Hills is a must do that should be on every riders bucket list. Why? About 12 years ago, two men, Bob Ross and his friend Mark Kussman decided that Two Hills needed a tourism draw. They decided a memorial to honour those who ride and have passed on would be a great idea. There was nothing like it in Canada and being riders they knew that most of us tend to like our ashes scattered to the wind and therefore there is no place for family and friends to gather to remember them. The Run to the Hills Memorial Rally was started to be a fundraiser for the monument and to give riders a connection to the memorial and its gardens. An
event that started with 30 riders has grown to over 600. Bob and Mark obtained a 99 year lease on an old provincial wayside stop. They turned the old cook shack into a chapel, built a wrap around deck and refurbished the outdoor toilets. Trees have been planted and the 2 acre spot is manicured and kept looking gorgeous by a summer employee. Hundreds of volunteer hours have been logged on this spot to make it the peaceful and comforting place that it is. While there are other small accoutrements like a set of gates to be added to the paved teardrop driveway and a memorial wall filled with names to be erected permanently, the centre piece of Bob and Mark’s drea the Wayside Fallen Riders Monument is now in place. Perseverance, hard work, love and community created this beautiful memorial and it’s gardens for all to enjoy. The physical address of the Wayside Fallen Riders Memorial Park is: 124062, AB-45, Two Hills, AB T0B 4K0 - across from the Two Hills Lions Golf & Country Club. Connect with Bob Ross and the volunteer committee on Facebook: @Run-to-the-HillsMemorial-Rally

Canadian Agricultural Partnership Farm Technology program The new Farm Technology Program supports the adoption of innovative technology that minimizes agricultural waste, optimizes farm efficiency, and encourages the adoption of best management practices in farm security. This program provides financial incentives on new technologies that are commercially available and already demonstrated under Alberta conditions. There are two streams available to producers under the Farm Technology program: farm technology and farm security. To be eligible for funding, the program targets technology that is proven, but not yet widely adopted within an applicant’s farm type. Now learn all about the PRFA The Peace River Forage Association was started in the summer of 1992. A research & development committee was formed and they developed the goals & objectives by which this association operates today. In 1994, Peace River Agriculture Strategic Planning Society funded the BC Forage Council / BC Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Fisheries forage varietals & cultivar trials through our association. This helped the association pinpoint various worthwhile forage activities that could be carried out to the economic benefit of the local farming and ranching sector. Our history as an organization is a colourful one and worth a read when you have time. This colorful history is documented in the Forage First newsletter archives; and is summarized in a tab under this one. In 1998, a comprehensive work plan was developed that defined a number of forage opportunities. Since then our strategy plan
has been revisited and updated regularly. Our most recent strategic plan (2020-2025) was developed from the feedback received from 100 of our members. The Peace River Forage Association of BC began with a dozen committed individuals with a goal of having 100 members. Our association has surpassed that goal. As of March 2021, there were over 140 paidup members representing a broad range of areas in the BC Peace River region. It fluctuates from year to year and seasonally but currently our mailing list of members and friends of forage totals close 200. Currently the PRFA of BC Board of Directors includes 7 directors, and there are several committees. We also have advisors from BC Ministry of Agriculture, Agri & Peace River Regional District and 5 part time, as needed forage contractors. Through funding for R&D projects, the forage association has hired energetic summer students and technicians when possible.

‘Other than sales commitments already in place, one question producers have is what to do with that remaining canola inventory,’ says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Should it be sold to take advantage of these record high harvest-time prices? Should it be sold and replaced on paper to track a potentially higher price? Should it be stored to await possibly even higher prices, while taking the precautions to ensure safe storage?’ An important first step in marketing is to know your product. Submit representative canola samples for grading to several buyers and the Canadian Grain Commission through its Harvest Sample Program. Blue notes that some buyers are paying premiums on oil content above a threshold level. One consideration is the need for cash flow to pay outstanding and upcoming expenses. An alternative to selling canola for cash flow needs is to use the Advance Payments Program to borrow against crop inventory at a 0 or low interest rate. ‘Most basis levels, the difference between the cash and futures markets, are also seasonally attractive, particularly so after the harvest-selling period. These strong basis levels imply that, despite the high canola seed prices and weaker calculated crush margins, demand remains strong for the weather-reduced amount of canola produced. A basis contract will lock in that attractive basis component of price while enabling a target to be set on the futures price component.’ An alternative after pricing canola is to replace some or all of that volume with paper positions by buying deferred futures positions or by buying call options. The canola futures market is in an inverse position, where nearby futures prices are higher than deferred prices. That inverse position signals that the market demand is for canola seed sooner rather than later. ‘On the other hand, U.S. soybean oil and soymeal futures, which relate to canola prices, are in a flat or slight carrying charge situation where nearby futures are similar to or discounted to deferred futures. If
The Northern Horizon, October 15, 2021
one believes that canola demand and prices will remain strong throughout the crop year, with the futures market in an inverse, buying deferred futures or call option contracts to replace part of canola sold is a valid strategy,’ says Blue. Storing the canola may also be a good decision. Most canola was harvested in dry condition, but one must pay attention to the condition of stored canola. Any spoilage of stored canola would be a shame with prices so high. ‘Again, basis levels are stronger for the deferred contracting periods and one may consider locking that basis while waiting for a higher futures price. However, with the futures market discounted for the deferred months, the futures market may need to improve from current levels to offset that inverse

futures price.’ The bottom line, says Blue, is that there are several marketing alternatives to consider for canola. ‘Often, compromise is a good strategy, that is price some, store some, and possibly replace some on paper by using a brokerage account. Remember that nobody knows for sure what the market will do. Hopefully, the high price makes for an enjoyable and profitable marketing experience.’ Contact For more information, contact Neil Blue: Hours: 8:15 am to 4:30 pm (open Monday to Friday, closed statutory holidays) Phone: 780-422-4053 Toll free: 310-0000 before the phone number (in Alberta) Email: neil.blue@gov.ab.ca
