REPORT: Methane found in groundwater in northeast BC occurs naturally Most methane found in groundwater in northeast British Columbia occurs naturally, not as a result of natural gas development, according to newly published independent research. Led by researchers at the University of British Columbia’s Energy and Environment Research Initiative, the Peace Region Scientific Groundwater Monitoring Network Installation Study focused on groundwater quality with a focus on the distribution, concentration and origin of dissolved hydrocarbons, principally methane. The research was funded by the BC Oil and Gas Commission, Geoscience BC, the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation and Mitacs. Researchers found that naturally occurring methane is ubiquitous in Peace Region groundwater, mostly at very low concentrations, and that there was no correlation between the amount of dissolved methane in
Your Northern Horizon Team
the groundwater and proximity to natural gas wells. Commenting on the publication of the final report and data from the project, Geoscience BC Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer Carlos Salas said peer-reviewed research like the Peace Region Scientific Groundwater Monitoring Network Installation Study is essential. A key contribution of the research is an improved understanding of baseline levels of methane in groundwater systems in the Peace Region. Developing and supporting capabilities to detect and monitor gas migrating through the subsurface, as well as collection of baseline groundwater data, were key recommendations in the Province of British Columbia’s 2019 Scientific Review of Hydraulic Fracturing in British Columbia report. editor@dcdn.ca

International students get in the saddle International students got a taste of the West last weekend, riding horses for their first time in Farmington. Northern Lights College students Jay Jain, Vaibhav Patil, Vishaldeep Singh, and Ming Li were among those taking lessons. “I think it’s a great opportunity for students. We haven’t rode or grown up around horses, but we’re really excited to learn,” said Jain. The sessions were led and hosted by instructor Samantha Dilworth’s at her indoor riding arena, built only four years ago. Dilworth has been riding since she was 10, growing up in Tumbler Ridge and
previously teaching a horse education program for School District 59. She said the Northern Lights College rodeo team reached out and asked if she was willing to take on some students. “It’s the first time they’ve been out, it’s been really neat. Some were nervous at the start but by the end we had them trotting around,” she said. More student riding lessons are being planned with the college and will likely continue into the winter months. 5G now in the Peace Residents and businesses in the Peace can now connect to 5G, Telus said Thursday. “The significant investments we are making in our world-leading network to rapidly expand our 5G footprint is enabling us to connect the citizens of Fort St. John and Chetwynd to the people, resources and critical information they need as we continue to navigate the global pandemic,” President and CEO Darren Entwistle said in a release. The company announced the local rollout earlier this year, saying its network would be expanding to 187 communities in B.C., and provide speeds up to 1.7 Gbps. 5G offers a leap in capabilities over today’s 4G networks, including increased capacity, ultra-low latency, network slicing and edge
computing, the company said. “Importantly, as we look optimistically toward a period of economic and social recovery, our global leading network will continue to drive the innovation that empowers the diversity and competitiveness of our country’s private sector and improves economic equality in our digital world, helping us answer the most pressing social challenges in health, education and the environment for the benefit of all Canadians,” Entwistle said. The company says it is spending $13 billion on infrastructure and operations in B.C. through 2024. The company says the investments will support the province throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and its economic recovery.

Live cattle imports and cattle slaughter both higher Cattle imports have been increasing annually since 2015 when only 32,172 head were imported to Canada and a mere 399 head were received in Alberta,’ says Jason Wood, provincial livestock market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Year to date (January to August), total Canadian live cattle imports are 277,290 head, already 1.9% higher than the 272,196 head imported during all of 2020.’ In Alberta, year to date (YTD) U.S. cattle imports are 171,460 head, 9.9% higher than the annual number of 156,016 head imported in 2020. On a percentage basis, 62% of Canadian cattle imports in 2021 have been received in Alberta. Alberta’s share of nationally imported cattle in 2021 is up from 54% in 2019 and 2020. The demand for feeder cattle continues to grow in Canada and
specifically Alberta,’ says Wood. ‘Alberta feedlot bunk capacity was reported at 1,530,900 head on January 1, 2021, an increase of 41,200 head from January 1, 2020. Bunk capacity has increased in response to an increase in slaughter capacity and strong basis levels in recent years.’ Western Canada beef processing plants are currently operating near capacity to satisfy strong consumer beef demand, which in turn is driving demand for more fed cattle. In 2021, western Canada federally inspected beef processing plant utilization rate was 97.7%, up from 95.2% in 2020 (6-week COVID-19 plant disruption removed) and significantly higher than the 5-year average utilization rate of 86%. Western Canada cattle slaughter ‘Higher utilization rates equal
higher slaughter and increased beef production,’ explains Wood. ‘To the week ending October 9, 2021, western Canada cattle slaughter is 1.947 million head, up 11.8% compared to 2020, 4.7% higher than in 2019 and 14.2%
higher than the 5-year average.’ Total YTD western Canadian beef production is 758,445 tonnes, up 12% from 2020, while total YTD Canadian beef production is up 11% from 2020 at 965,500 tonnes.

Nitrogen use efficiency and applications of liquid urea Most of the soil organic matter is composed of humic substances (Nardi et al. 2002). Humic substances nurture plant cell membrane functions and encourage nutrient uptake. In the past ten years, there has been a growing body of evidence supporting the use of bio-stimulants in agriculture for both horticultural and field crop production systems, where they have been shown to increase root growth, enhanced nutrient uptake, and increased stress tolerance. du Jardin (2015) defined plant bio-stimulants in five categories: 1) microbial inoculants, 2) humic acids, 3) fulvic acids, 4) protein hydrolysates, and 5) amino acids, and seaweed extracts. Fulvic acid, is of particular interest, as it is a natural chelator and thus helps facilitate migration of metal ions and nutrients across tissue membranes (Sun et al, 2012). It also retains many properties that make it ideal for foliar tank mixes, such as: (a) high solubility under different pH conditions (b) high cation exchange capacity, and (c), recorded absence of antagonistic effects with nutrients or pesticides. Owing to its low molecular weight (a few hundred Daltons), it can easily cross plant tissue membranes, and remains in solution even at high salt concentrations. All of which are considered ideal for foliar nutrient applications. Moreover, the capacity of fulvic acid to increase nutrient uptake has been reported in both horticultural and field crop production systems. In fact, field pea (Pisum sativum L.) individuals exposed to C14 soil organic matter grew more due to acquisition of fulvic acid rather than humic acid (Vaughan and Ord 1981), possibly because fulvic acids are smaller molecular compounds compared to other humic acids. At the North Peace Applied Research Association, an experiment was designed to determine if foliar applications of Nitrogen with or without additions of fulvic acid have and effect on yield and leaf nitrogen content in wheat (Triticum sativum L.). The experiment was designed as a complete randomized block design with four treatments: (1) liquid urea at 56 kg ha-1 tank mixed with fulvic acid at 0.74 L ha-1 applied in-furrow, (2) Fulvic acid application in-furrow at 0.74 L ha-1 followed by two foliar applications of liquid urea at 0.8 kg L-1, (3) Liquid urea at 56 kg ha-1 tank mixed with fulvic acid applications at 0.74 L ha-1 applied in-furrow and two foliar applications of liquid urea with fulvic acid at 0.8 kg L-1 and 1.6 L ha-1 respectively and (4), in furrow application of liquid urea at 56 kg ha-1 and fulvic acid at 0.74 L ha-1 followed by two foliar applications of fulvic acid at 1.6 L ha-1, liquid urea at 0.8 kg ha-1 as well as a calcium and magnesium supplement (Nitro 18) at 0.05 L ha-1. In addition, a control treatment was included consisting of a sole application of liquid urea in-furrow at 56 kg ha-1.
Figure 1 shows the average daily temperature (°C) and precipitation (mm) during the 2021 growing season. All in-furrow applications of urea were performed on May 24 by banding at 11cm from seed trench and foliar applications were conducted at main shoot and one tiller on July 6 and first node growth stages on July 21, 2021 (Zadok 21 and Zadok 31 respectively). Plant tissue sampling was performed a week after each foliar application on all treatments (July 14 and July 29 respectively). Wheat was harvested on October 2 with a Wintersteiger Nursery Master Plot Combine (Wintersteiger AG, 1997). Yield was computed based on seed moisture content obtained with a Mini GAC handheld moisture tester (Dickey-John, 2006). Results Results indicated that Nitrogen content at Zadok 21 and Zadok 31 was statistically the same across treatments. Likewise, percentage of Mg content was the same among treatments in either plant sampling. In the plant sampling conducted at Zadok 21 plants sprayed with tank mixes of liquid urea, fulvic acid and Nitro 18 had more Ca percentage content, compared to the control (Figure 2). Calcium percentage content, however, was not impacted by treatment applications at the Zadok 31 growth stage. Yield was not affected by either in-furrow and/or foliar applications treatments (Figure 3).

d yield impacted by liquid and fulvic acid in wheat Conclusion:
Figure 2. Wheat yield in kilograms per hectare. Different letters indicate significance between treatments (α=0.05).
Calcium content increased at early growth stages of wheat but due to stress caused by high temperatures and poor precipitation, there was no difference in content by the time plant individuals reached the first node stage. Moreover, yield obtained in control treatments was the same compared to foliar and in-furrow treatments mixed with fulvic acid and fulvic acid with a Ca and Mg supplement. It is likely weather played an important role and dry conditions paired with extreme temperatures may have exposed plants to stress that ultimately compromised its yield. From our data so far, we can conclude that there is no potential benefit in adding fulvic acid and supplements either to seed or to standing crops as there is no impact on yield, particularly if weather conditions such as extended drought and heat are present. Benefits of pregnancy testing your cow herd Dr. Christa Harder Pregnancy checking season is amongst us with October and November typically being our businest months, however we have seen more herds getting preg checked earlier this fall. Cows are home from summer pasture and calves are weaned or in the process of being weaned as we speak. Which leads to the question is it worth preg checking your cow herd? Before we decide if it’s worth it or not there are 3 options to choose from: 1. Preg-checking and culling the open cows in the fall. 2. Preg-checking and feed open cows separately. 3. Not preg-checking and feed cows over winter. Each year presents its own challenges and one of the simple factors when deciding to preg check is how much feed you have or how much feeding an open cow over winter is going to cost you? 2021 has been a challenging year with much lower hay/silage yields and an increase in feed costs. There was significant carry over feed from 2020 which has helped but this will likely also be poorer quality feed.

Many producers will be looking to minimize the number of unneccesary mouths they are feeding this winter which makes pregnancy testing your herd a very important job! BC cattle producers should be aware that the BC government released the AgriRecovery program in fall 2021 which does provide some compensation to producers for preg checking your herds. You veterinarian can sign/fill out the forms for you after you preg check. There are various other economic factors that come into play when deciding if at all or when is best to market cull/open cows which I won’t discuss in this article. However there is a great decision making tool for determining over winter costs/economics of preg checking for your specific herd that can be found at the Beef Cattle Research Council’s website: www. beefresearch.ca. Besides the cost factors preg checking also offers a lot of important herd management information. Conception rates give you an idea of how reproductively fertile your herd is and may highlight some areas of deficiency in your herd management that could be improved. Generally in most cow herds that breed for 3 cycles we aim to have a conception rate of 90% or more. Ideally at least 75% catch within in the first cycle. A lot of herds keep bulls with cows for longer than 3 cycles and then one should aim to have an even better conception rate though I find that generally does not happen and rather leads to a spread out calving season that tends to get more stretched out every year. Some herds due to the area they graze on summer pasture do not have the ability to pull their bulls, so bulls stay with cows till they come off summer pasture. With the sophistication of the ultrasounds we now use, pregancies less than 4 months along can be fairly accurately aged. This makes early pregnancy testing a good option for these herds since we can help estabilish a cut off and therefore cull cows that got bred too late or would otherwise be considered open had you pulled your bulls. As a disclaimer please note that though we are fairly accurate at determining fetal age in the early pregnancy there is still quite a bit of individual variation in when a cow will calve (give or take 2 weeks).
Identifying the early calvers in your group (the reproductively ideal group in your herd) allows you to select replacement heifers from that group. Herd reproductive diseases such as trichomoniasis and camplyobacter may also be suspected if there is a poor conception rate or a high number of late bred cattle. Information on bull performance can also be evaluated when preg checking. Putting each cow through the chute in fall allows you to identify/treat any health issues, update inventory/replace tags, administer vaccines or deworming and assess body condition scores/condition of each cow. This also a great time for you to discuss herd management with your veterinarian and ask them questions regarding concerns about individual cows. Since 2018 a valid veterinary client patient relationship (VCPR) has been required to obtain medications from veterinary your clinic. Preg checking your herd with your veterianirian is an excellent time to establish or annually update your existing VCPR relationship. When booking your herd for a pregnancy testing cows should be minimum 40 days pregnant (40 days since bull was pulled). We also request your chute/handling system be in good working order and safe (if you ever want a vet to come back) and we prefer that cows are on water so their manure is not as dry (making it easier on the cow and your vet to get the job done). Ideally we would like the weather to be sunny and plus 10 °C but highly unlikely this time year. We ask that you not make fun of your veterinarian when they are as wide as they are tall from all the layers they are wearing to keep warm! If you have further questions regarding preg checking your cow herd or how to make the experience most comfortable for your cows or your veterinarinan please do not hesitate to contact us at the Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic!

Never horsing around. Or always horsing around Annually we host Horsemanship Learning Adventure Holidays – in 2020 – you can join us in Costa Rica in January and new for 2020 – in August we are hosting “Putting Principles to Purpose” an 8 days of immersive learning and challenges where you can experience and improve your horsemanship with a great mix of good times to soak in the scenery at the Ranch – 160 acres designed with horses and our students in mind. Check out our calendar for dates, details and to book. Our Horses Development Program is thoughtfully designed in Stages helping you learn in practical ways, for those unable to attend in person – you can complete while you are at home – check out the DVDs which you can purchase online and get started right away. We’ve asked the question “Do you remember why you got into horses?” It is our belief that everyone whose lives have been touched by horses had a plan, a vision or an inspiration of how good it could be. Or maybe it was just the warmth of their manes,
the wonderful smell or the way you felt better about everything whenever you were around them that got you started. Whatever it was, we hope you remember and better yet, you are living it. If you are we would like to be a part of that experience. Perhaps you’ve forgotten or gotten far away from the original dream, why you got into horses in the first place. We would love to to remind you of what that was and bring that dream into your reality. The possibilities are endless and best of all, we’ve found a way that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary results with horses. For everyone who has been a student in the past, we would like to thank you. What we do wouldn’t be possible without you. For those of you we have yet to meet, it would be an honor to be a part of your experience with horses in some way. For all of you, we hope you will be inspired to come visit us at The Horse Ranch, our home where we live our dream with horses. Sincerely, Glenn Stewart

Students get some wetlands training
BYOB
Students taking the Land and Water Resources Diploma at Northern Lights College got some hands on training this fall, partnering with the BC Wildlife Federation to assess four wetlands in the area as part of their practicum.
With independent nutrition consultant BARRY YAREMCIO
Above - The full crew: Meghan Saunders, Samantha Cochrane, Joy Ann Chipesia, Tamara St. Pierre, Rebekah Ingram, and Katie Mitchell.
“With increasing costs and tighter margins, maintaining a high level of productive efficiency is needed to be profitable. Providing a balanced nutrition program is a big part of the management plan to meet these goals.” Barry Yaremcio
LIMITATIONS OF GRAZING STUBBLE FIELDS With forages in short supply and high priced; anything that can extend the grazing season and use home grown feeds will reduce winter feeding costs.

Straw bunches for grazing. (Photo credit: Barry Yaremcio)
Straw and chaff can have variable quality depending on the amount of grain and weed seeds thrown over by the combine. Wheat, rye, and triticale straw typically have the lowest protein at approximately 4% and energy at 40% Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN). Barley straw tends to be a bit better with 4 to 5 % protein and 42 to 45% TDN, and oats can be better quality with 4.5 to 5.5% protein and 44 to 47% TDN. Pea straw is one of the best when it comes to protein, usually 2 to 3% higher than the cereal straws but has the same energy content as barley or oat straw. Canola straw is typically not used for grazing, but is suitable. A 2:1 mineral in many cases does not supply sufficient amounts of calcium and magnesium. A 3:1 or 4:1 mineral may be required.
Call Fresh Water Treatment Systems Ltd.
780-356-2928 • www.fwtsltd.com
Low quality straw limits grazing due to high fibre content. It may be necessary to provide supplemental hay, silage or grain. A pregnant cow in mid pregnancy requires 55% TDN and 7% protein. If protein is not adequate, feed intake can be reduced because it can take longer for the feed to pass through the digestive system. A lack of energy will result in the cows mobilizing fat to meet the demand. A cow losing weight and becoming thin prior to winter increases maintenance energy requirements and will require more feed to keep warm.
AREN’T YOU TIRED OF RUNNING YOUR CATTLE THROUGH WITH A “POUR ON” 3 OR 4 TIMES? WHY NOT SWITCH TO A LEWIS CATTLE OILER AND CONTROL BITING AND SUCKING LICE TODAY.
There are many options to supplement extra energy and protein When comparing options, three items must be considered:
LEWIS CATTLE OILERS the industry standard
1) Is it cost effective?
• • • •
Rugged enough for all livestock 8 Gallon Reservoir • Auto Drape Oiler Included 3-Chain Synthetic Wick Automatic Pumping Feature with Adjustable Recharge Control • Large Loop for Moving
2) Does the supplement meet the nutritional requirements of the animals? 3) Is it convenient to use? There are many different products available to use as supplements. Some are free choice and others can be limit fed once every 3 days. Use what works for your situation. For additional information on feeding cows with limited feed, contact Barry at 403-741-6032 or by email at bjyaremcio@gmail.com.

Taylor Bridge field studies continuing
“That’s business as usual, rehabilitation, and a new structure. All of those three choices have different spectrums of possibilities,” said Greg Bruce, the ministry’s project director for Taylor Bridge. “Our job is to be very thorough so when we take a concept to the decision makers we’ve answered all of those questions that people are thinking of in the back of their minds. If we don’t, we go back to the drawing board.” Since 1960, the 712-metre twolane bridge has carried drivers across the Peace River at the same spot where its predecessor collapsed after a 1957 landslide. Today, the bridge’s open steel grid deck requires more than 100 maintenance days per year, at a conservative estimate of $1
million, causing lengthy and costly travel delays to both industry and residents. Though Bruce believes the life of the bridge could probably see another 30 years, he said that would require even more ongoing maintenance. “The maintenance that we do today it’s important, and I would say that it’s very invasive in terms of impact to the community, but it’s what we do to keep that bridge safe,” Bruce said. “In order to keep it long term we’re going to be requiring more intensive rehabilitation work. What you see today is mainly on the deck, and over time we’ll be requiring work on the structure itself.” Investigative field work is continuing through the fall and winter, and traditional land use studies and consultations are also ongoing with Treaty 8 First Nations. Planning will also consider opportunities to improve safety, transit, walking, and cycling.
R0011885343
Planners estimate it will be about two years before a preferred concept for the revamp or rebuild of the Taylor Bridge will be ready to bring to provincial decision makers.

Green Valley 4H Club Report Wow! It’s already time to start a new year and a new project! As the new year starts up, I can’t help but look back on the past year and all the generous sponsors who lend their support to our Club and to 4-H in general. The Green Valley 4-H couldn’t do it without the support of all of our generous sponsors. We appreciate it! The weather is cooling off, and with the change of season comes the excitement of a new 4-H year and another project. The members will be selecting their projects and organizing their feed and ration amounts. The Green Valley 4-H club is excited to welcome some new members,
growing our club to 10 Steer Projects and 5 Heifers. We are looking forward to our first weigh in happening in a few short weeks. For many of our members this means their first time halter breaking an animal. It’s a challenging but rewarding experience! Over the winter each member will adapt their feed rations in hopes of winning the coveted “Daily Rate of Gain” award. This award is given to the animal with the greatest daily weight gain overall for the year. The future looks bright. Until next time, — Arlee Newsham, Club Reporter, Green Valley 4-H Club

Tips to keep clubroot “low and local” By Autumn Barnes
reproduction.
A new factsheet available at clubroot.ca distills the key practices to mitigate clubroot and maintain profitability. Practices include growing clubroot-resistant (CR) cultivars responsibly on all canola acres. In 2020, only 39 per cent of the canola cultivars grown in the Canadian Prairies were CR, according to Canadian Grain Commission data. While CR will be a standard feature on most canola hybrids by 2025, canola growers should start to use CR and other integrated management strategies immediately. Clubroot is the disease caused by soil-borne spores of the protist and obligate parasite, Plasmodiophora brassicae. Spores spread easily and early infections can be missed for years while clubroot-susceptible canola multiplies spores to catastrophic levels. Planting CR cultivars before the disease gets established will help slow spore
Keeping spore concentration low helps maintain yield and protect CR traits. Growers who wait until the disease has taken hold in a field before choosing CR could be stuck with challenging levels of clubroot for a long time. Higher concentrations of P. brassicae spores lead to larger clubroot galls, more risk to yield, more resting spores released back to the soil and fewer management options. (The goal is to keep spore concentrations “low”). Preventing the introduction and spread of P. brassicae spores will prevent the clubroot disease from establishing and spreading. (The goal is to keep spores “local”). Responsible use of CR cultivars includes an integrated approach to clubroot management, which will help to protect the CR trait. Integrate the following practices to keep spores low and local. Keep spores low
• Rotate crops. Maintain a minimum 2-year break between canola (1-in-3 rotation). • Scout. Examine roots in every canola field during late summer/fall. Pay special attention to high-traffic and high-moisture areas. Soil testing may help identify spores before physical symptoms appear. • Grow clubroot resistance (CR) on all canola acres. Early infestations can be missed for years while susceptible hosts multiply spores to catastrophic levels. Clubroot resistance (CR) should be grown on all canola acres as part of an integrated management strategy. • Control brassica weeds in all crops. Host weeds (like volunteer canola, stinkweed, flixweed, shepherd’s purse and mustards) should be controlled early to minimize gall formation and resting spore release. • Manage clubroot patches. Identify clubroot areas and manage those patches separately from the rest of the field to reduce spore concentration and prevent
spores from spreading. The new “Manage Clubroot, Minimize Risk” factsheet at clubroot. ca has specific tips for patch management. Keep spores local • Take biosecurity measures. Commit to a biosecurity plan to prevent the introduction and spread of spores on contaminated inputs and equipment. Communicate sanitation expectations with all relevant parties before field entry. • Reduce tillage. Minimize soil (and spore) movement within and between fields. Visit clubroot.ca to learn more about the clubroot disease cycle and management, and to see the full factsheet. –Autumn Barnes is an agronomy specialist and clubroot lead with the Canola Council of Canada. College greenhouses grow connections Two new greenhouses have gone up at Northern Lights College campuses in Fort St John and Dawson Creek, part of effort to grow student connections to reconciliation and food sustainability. The greenhouses will house four sacred plants — sage, sweet grass, tobacco, and cedar — all to be used in future Indigenous ceremonies. Bruce Mackay, the college’s co-ordinator of Indigenous relations and services, says the legacy structures are vital for spiritually connecting students and staff to the land.

“Through the act of planting a seed, watering it, caring, honouring and harvesting a medicinal plant, or any food we grow, we will be enacting parts of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action that will allow us to co-create with communities (indigenous and non-indigenous) collaborative pathways to greater understanding and learning using Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing,” Mackay
explained in an email. The greenhouses were built by trade students in the college’s carpentry program and placed on site at each campus. A tobacco harvesting ceremony was held last week in Dawson Creek, with the sacred plants now drying in the school’s indigenous gathering space. Mackay says tobacco honours the gift of life and is used by elders to cleanse the spirit, heal, and connect with others. “As in the garden, we want to plants seeds of hope and inspiration for all learners,” he said. While the greenhouses are primarily rooted in First Nations culture and the sacred Medicine Wheel, they will also be used to grow herbs and vegetables. COVID-19 and demand for e-commerce ‘Consumer behaviour and attitudes towards food purchasing changed quickly and dramatically because of the pandemic,’ says Jeewani Fernando, provincial consumer market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Despite the large volume of sales during the pandemic, there was a marked decline in multiple weekly grocery trips. These have been replaced by single large shopping trips and an increase in online purchasing.’ The latest Consumer Corner looks at how COVID-19 affected the demand for e-commerce. Fernando says many consumers tried online food shopping for the first time during the pandemic. Sales trends show that consumers have become more comfortable buying grocery and food products online. Convenience is the main reason for online shopping followed by safety and health and other factors. However, consumer concerns about fees, the quality and selection of perishable items, and an immediate need for the groceries are some of the main challenges. ‘Retailers may consider expanding sameday delivery service or introducing annual subscription plans rather than using one-time delivery fees. They might also increase the availability of curbside pickup to alleviate some of the concerns and to drive more online

shopping.’ Pandemic restrictions on restaurant capacity and reluctance among many diners to frequent indoor public places have shifted food service and drinking places to offer more contactless delivery and take-out options, and many have made investments to expand their online sales capabilities. Consumers stayed home and used various platforms to find restaurants and order in meals in 2020. ‘Using e-commerce to purchase food still has strong growth potential in Canada, given the significant growth in both supply and demand during the pandemic in 2020. These industry insights may help Alberta food retailers and food service providers to better manage their food product offerings in the post-pandemic era,’ says Fernando.

EAT DRINK LOCAL to support B.C. restaurants The fall harvest is on, and British Columbians are encouraged to make an extra effort to support local restaurants during this year’s Buy BC: EAT DRINK LOCAL campaign. Some of the province’s besttasting ingredients and products are available this time of year. These flavours are showcased in the Buy BC: EAT DRINK LOCAL campaign, which is running from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15. The campaign features 30 days of inspirational stories about restaurants and restaurateurs to encourage people to get out and support local business and enjoy a unique B.C. dining experience. “British Columbians are passionate about local food and I encourage people to do their part by following our Buy BC: EAT DRINK LOCAL campaign over the next month and supporting local restaurants,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “This is a time for the province’s farmers and food producers to shine with local chefs showcasing their creative
dishes using local products from all over the province. It’s a great time to enjoy the bounty of B.C.” Buy BC: EAT DRINK LOCAL is a collaborative campaign with the ministry and the BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association. In its third year, the campaign is sharing the stories of 40 restaurants throughout the province that are providing great meals and supporting local fishers, farmers, harvesters and producers. “Restaurants across our province are a vibrant hub of dining and sharing food and beverage stories. Despite the struggles we continue to face, we are ensuring our businesses are safe for customers and staff in face of the pandemic,” said Ian Tostenson, president and CEO, BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association. “It’s been a tough 18 months, but we’re excited to celebrate the fall harvest and to connect with customers over a dish or a glass that speaks to how important food culture is to our province and to keeping passionate people employed in
our industry.” Buy BC: EAT DRINK LOCAL connects local farmers, ranchers, harvesters, producers and growers with restaurateurs and chefs who develop their menus to highlight locally grown and processed food and drinks yearround. Restaurants throughout the province are part of the food web that enhances local foodand-beverage knowledge and gives consumers a delicious opportunity to try local, seasonal and sustainable food grown here in the province. “Our local food-producing industry and food-service industry have shown great resiliency throughout this pandemic,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “This initiative creates new opportunities for food partnerships that will help local farmers, food producers and restaurants continue to emerge from the challenges of the past two years. This is another great example of coming together to create a stronger B.C. for everyone.”
Buy BC represents a wide range of fresh-tasting, high-quality agricultural and seafood products that are grown, harvested, raised and processed locally by British Columbians. By following the Buy BC: EAT DRINK LOCAL campaign, people can share in a collective sense of pride for the variety of products that come from B.C.’s soil and waters, and be inspired to find new dining experiences in their part of the province.

Moat fastest barrel racer at Lakeland Fall Classic
The Canadian College Rodeo season began last weekend with the Lakeland Fall Classic in Vermillion, October 16 and 17, and the Northern Lights College Rodeo Team couldn’t have asked for a better start to its season. Rachel Moat, a dual credit student taking the carpentry program at NLC, finished first and fifth in her two barrel racing runs, and was the fastest rider on average out of 91 cowgirls. Aspen Wollen and Averee Whitewood had great showings as well, averaging inside the top 35. Other highlights from the weekend were Aspen Wollen’s fifth-place pole bending ride, Moat and Tyler Bondaroff both placing seventh in goat tying, and Ryan Collett placing second in steer wrestling. Collett, Bryce Garcia and Wyatte Copeland

Feedback wanted on new North Peace OCP: comments close Nov. 12 The Peace River Regional District is seeking public feedback on its draft new plan to guide development around Fort St. John, Taylor, and Charlie Lake. PRRD directors gave first reading to the PRRD’s proposed new North Peace Fringe Area Official Community Plan on Oct. 7. Among its key themes are protecting agricultural land and rural lifestyles along with the environment, and collaborating on managing growth and long-term plans for the area. “An Official Community Plan sets out the vision for an area for the future,” the PRRD says. “It provides a framework to guide decision-making on land use planning matters including where new growth and development will be directed to, what uses are permitted and how areas will be protected for things like agriculture, recreation and the environment.” The OCP first went under
Horizon
review in June 2015, and has been through several public consultations since. Of particular note, the new OCP designates the Old Fort as ”an area of non-decision,” according to the PRRD. “This means that the new NPFA OCP will not include this area and the old OCP will remain in effect,” the PRRD states. “This will allow the new NPFA OCP to move forward and ensure that additional planning and review of the Old Fort area can take place later when appropriate.” The PRRD says the draft of the new OCP also incorporates its recent housing needs assessment, and updates development permit areas to match land use designations to “reflect the need to protect the natural environment and agricultural lands.” The PRRD is planning a virtual open house flr Nov. 3 and an in-person open house for Nov. 6 to gather public feedback. Public comments will be closed Nov. 12.
