THANK YOU FOR RECYCLING THIS NEWSPAPER.

My 4-H Ambassador experience Just like that, another great year in 4-H is coming to an end! I am Rheana Gilbert, and I represent 4-H in the Peace River Region as a 4-H BC Ambassador. I have just finished my first year as an Ambassador and wanted to share what I have learned with the community. There are a few main responsibilities that come with being an Ambassador, such as promoting 4-H to the public. In July, the Ambassador team partook in a training weekend where we learned about the most effective ways to promote the 4-H program to different audiences of all ages. We discussed how to keep younger ages engaged in long presentations that may not interest them. Having your audience actively participating in a presentation is one of the hardest and most important things we do as ambassadors as we are commonly presenting new information we have brought back drom other places or organizations. Another huge part of being a 4-H BC Ambassador is supporting our fellow members, leaders, and volunteers. Helping those who help us. This is another one of my favourite parts of being an ambassador. Knowing that you have the skills set to be trusted with organizing and executing important events is always something to be proud of. As we all know Covid has changed many things within the program and I would like to bring up the fact that these leaders and volunteers have done an amazing job to keep 4-H running smoothly. The ambassadors themselves create a communicational network across the province. We teach and learn from each other to improve and build upon one another’s skills. We all have a huge love for the program and cannot wait to do more in the upcoming year as second-year ambassadors. We will be sad to see our second-years move on, but have learned a lot from them even in these Covid times, and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavours. — Rheana Gilbert, Peace River Region 4H Ambassador

Cattle prices and above-average sales ‘Producers marketed grass and background cattle 1 to 2 months ahead of schedule to maximize feed availability for their core beef herd,’ says Jason Wood, provincial livestock market analyst with Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development. Weekly auction volumes have been above the 5-year average in all weeks but one since the end of June. Total Alberta cattle sold at auction over the last 4 months is just over 700,000 head, up 34% from the previous year and 26% higher than the 5-year average. Weekly auction volumes are expected to remain large through November as the fall calf run wraps up. Non-fed cattle marketings have been

the 5-year average shows a 6% decline or $77 per head for the same period. The average monthly cow price peaked in June and has been under pressure following drought conditions and associated impact on feed supply and cost. D2 cows averaged $61.29 per cwt for the first week of November, down 3% from the previous week, 12% lower than the same week a year ago and 24% below the same week on the 5-year average. Cow sales are expected to remain elevated through the remainder of the fall run. The Alberta cow market has been trading at a discount to the U.S. cow market since midJuly. Previously, 2014 was the last time that the Alberta cow market traded at a discount to the United States market for more than 7 weeks. Alberta D2 cows were trading at an $18 per cwt discount to the U.S. market at the start of November compared to an $8 per cwt discount the same week a year ago. ‘The price discount will continue to encourage U.S. buying. Prices usually hit their

seasonal low in late November then start to seasonally strengthen into yearend’ says Wood.

M.C. Quantock elevated for some time. Estimated Canadian cow exports to the end of August are about 12% lower than in 2020, mainly due to significantly lower exports during the April to June period. However, compared to 2019, estimated cow exports are about 9% higher this year and 3% higher than the 5-year average. Estimated Canadian cow exports during July and August were about 30% higher than in 2020 and the 5-year average. ‘Higher exports are a factor of lower than average slaughter demand for cows and high feed costs that have reduced demand for feeder cows.’ Western Canada cow slaughter is 274,079 head to the week ending October 30, up 12.7% from 2020 but 0.7% below the 5-year average. The weekly pace of cow slaughter increased in May this year and has been above the 5-year average in 18 of the last 27 weeks. Nationally, cow slaughter is 363,633 head to the week ending October 30, up 11% from 2020 and 1.6% above the 5-year average. The impact of larger cow marketings is expected to lift the Canadian culling rate to a forecasted 14% in 2021, up from the 15-year average of 12% and the 2020 value of 11% (Gateway Livestock Exchange). Increased culling has pressured prices with the Alberta D2 cow market seeing larger than seasonal price declines in recent weeks. Over the last 5 weeks, D2 cows have declined over 24% or $20 per hundred weight (cwt) – $280 per head on 1,400 pound cow. By comparison,

‘Where are you, Bobby?’ search on for wayward horse missing near Pink Mountain The search is on for a horse gone missing during a hunting trip this past September in Pink Mountain. ‘Bobby’ is a 12 year-old gelding that wandered off during a hunting trip near the 216 Road on Sept. 24, and has yet to return. Megan Holm is a friend of the owners and spoke with Alaska Highway News, telling them Bobby is super friendly but known to be mischievous. “They’ve got a ranch Big Bar by Clinton, but they went hunting up in Pink Mountain and the horse untied himself. They were able to track him back to the horse trailer, but he wasn’t there,” Holm explained. “Most folks up there are honest, so I don’t think he

was taken. But he’s also a friendly horse and would get in anyone’s trailer, so it’s hard to know.” Holm hopes ‘Bobby’ can be found sooner than later especially with colder weather setting in for winter, noting they’ve asked local guides and outfitters to keep an eye out for the wayward horse too. “He might go back to the same area. Honestly, I’ve never experienced anything like this, but he’s a good horse,” said Holm, noting the horse could have also joined up with a herd without anyone knowing. Anyone with information can reach out to Holm on Facebook. Tom Summer

The benefits of intercroppi things to consider when int Global climate change is bringing about more extreme weather conditions as the global average temperature rises. We can expect extreme dry conditions as well as extreme wet conditions, which are both detrimental to crop growth. While we can hope to engineer better crop varieties to combat these scenarios, there is an alternative that we can turn our attention to as a potential permanent solution. Intercropping, once known as the “Three Sisters” cropping method, has started showing results that can solve some of the issues that we are currently facing. Intercropping consists of three major concepts: (1) the choice of plants, (2) the choice of planting arrangement, and (3) the choice of harvesting method. By choosing different plants, the plant interactions can result in different benefits. For example, the effects of growing cereals with legumes often leads to better access to nutrients, or the effects of growing different legume varieties leading to better overall yield. The planting arrangement can play a big role in how the different plant varieties would interact with each other, whereby planting the varieties close to each other would yield different compared to if they were planted further away. Finally, the method of harvest could affect how the plants grow. By harvesting one plant ahead of another, we leave room for the remaining plant to grow, thus leading to better productivity. While plant interaction is a major part of what makes intercropping valuable in a production system, recent studies have shown that there are more interactions than just those between the plants. We have learned that soil fungi, specifically mycorrhizal fungi, play an important role in plant interactions as they are capable of bridging between the plants. Mycorrhizal fungi can relocate moisture, as well as some macroand micro-minerals, which could translate to better access to nutrients for plants. Of these fungi, one type called the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi infect the roots, like how rhizobia fungi infect pea roots and produce nodules and are capable of transporting nutrients to and from plants. With that in mind, they could be beneficial to plant productivity. In this article, I will be discussing the results found within the project completed in Fairview, Alberta, where we discovered the importance of intercropping, and how plant choice impacts plant forage yield, water use, and mycorrhizal diversity. By the end of this article, I hope it will intrigue you to learn more about how intercropping could help production in the future.

Background and results This project operated during the 2019 and 2020 growing seasons, where the crops were grown at the Peace Country Beef and Forage Association’s research farm, located west of the Fairview town center in Alberta. We chose to use oats, peas, and canola as they were commodities in the region. For harvesting, we chose to use mixed row intercropping and

harvested the plants together since it would be the most conventional method of harvest, and the most efficient. We also sampled soil moisture using moisture sensors and mycorrhizal diversity using microscopy and DNA samples. In terms of forage yield, we were expecting to observe the effects of overyielding, as many studies have alluded to. However, from our results, we find that overall, overyielding requires very specific conditions to manifest. Instead, what we found within the two growing seasons is how stable intercropping is in terms of forage yield. 2019 was a drier than normal year while 2020 was a wetter than normal year in Fairview, yet we were seeing yield variations in intercropping much smaller than what we saw in monocultures. Forage quality also produced interesting results when intercropped. While we found that intercropping canola can slightly reduce the digestibility and total digestible nutrients, it greatly boosts phosphorus and potassium contents in the forage. The relative feed values were similar in both intercropping and monocropping, which indicates that it could be used as an alternative, albeit the lower yield performance. Intercropping is very resource efficient. In terms of nitrogen use efficiency, intercropping can convert the same amount of nitrogen into more dry matter yield compared to monocropping. Similarly, intercropping also has better water use efficiency, where for the same amount of water uptake, intercropping produces higher yield over monocropping. However, intercropping couldn’t make use of the water present in the system, as it had a lower water uptake compared to monocropping. By studying the AM diversity, we learned a bit more about how intercropping affects this fungal group. Firstly, nitrogen fertilizer addition increases the number of species present around the roots in a drier year in oats, decreases in peas, and stays the same when the two were intercropped. In the wetter year, where the species richness is relatively similar, we were able to see that peas have in general a higher species diversity than oats, and that by intercropping them together, we also see that there is an overlap in fungal species between oats and peas.

ing in years to come and tercropping work with each other, but we are also given the opportunity to see if we can create a method to consistently reproduce the overyielding phenomena that sometimes occurs in intercropping. With the discovery of the interaction between oats and peas with AM fungi, we can make further progress by learning what the individual genera and species do for each of the plants, thus being able to better cater to the plant and the soil needs to produce higher yields.

What does this study provide? From this study, we can see that intercropping at this stage isn’t a replacement to conventional systems as it doesn’t provide yields that can match conventional systems. While there are some benefits in terms of forage quality, the benefits of intercropping are like that of adding sainfoin to alfalfa mixes for introducing tannins to avoid bloat. However, the key takeaway from this study is how stable a system like this is and how it can withstand extreme weathers compared to conventional systems, and how it can be a tool for avoiding crop failure. It is truly incredible how by having more than one crop species in a system, we were able to stabilize the yield, where all the intercropping system were producing relatively similar yield, regardless of plant species. One of the benefits of having a stable yield is the assurance that no matter the forecasted growing season, the producer is always able to know how much yield they can expect. With the increased chance for extreme weather, conventional system could experience higher chance of crop failure compared to intercropping since it is prone to higher yield fluctuation. Thanks to its high resource use efficiency, intercropping can produce such stable yield. However, knowing that intercropping has high resource use efficiency only scratches the surface of understanding why intercropping produces such stable yield. By learning the behavior of AM fungi when interacting in an intercropping system, we have begun learning about how plants could be using this fungal system to tap into better nutrient resources. By increasing the diversity of the mycorrhizal species through intercropping, the plants could have more access to resources than it would if it was in a monoculture. That said, there is an ever-growing emphasis on protecting the soil that we grow crops on so that the fungal and microbial ecosystem can help plants grow better. This would imply that it is imperative to avoid certain practices that may inadvertently damage the soil ecosystem. While I may not be advocating for a transition from conventional cropping to intercropping, I highly encourage producers to engage in the talk about intercropping. The field of intercropping is a relatively new field of study and there are many interactions left to be explored. Not only is it an opportunity to see how different plant species compete and

Endocrine disease in horses Dr. Evany Forrest Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic’s recent equine client seminar included a presentation on endocrine s that we see in horses. Cushings disease and equine metabolic syndrome are the two most common endocrine disorders that occur in our equine companions, and both can result in chronic and potentially life-threatening laminitis (founder). This article will briefly cover the basics of each disorder. The endocrine system is made up of organs that produce the hormones in charge of controlling many important bodily functions. These include the hypothalamus and pituitary gland located in/ near the brain, thyroid, pineal and adrenal glands, reproductive organs as well as the pancreas among others. When dysfunction in hormone production or signalling occurs, the body is unable to regulate itself normally and things begin to go wrong. Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is a disorder characterized by insulin resistance, abnormal fat deposition (aka regional adiposity) and altered cortisol (stress hormone) metabolism that causes adverse health effects including a very high risk of laminitis. Insulin resistance describes the condition in which body

tissues do not respond appropriately to insulin, resulting in excessively high blood sugar and insulin levels. These horses experience very large blood sugar spikes after eating that their body cannot control, and the constantly elevated insulin begins to affect their blood vessel tone and control of the blood flow to the feet. Breeds predisposed to EMS include ponies, donkies, Arabians, Morgans, most gaited breeds and some QHs and warmbloods, but any horse can be affected. Owners should look at their horses critically to identify any signs that might be present, especially easy keepers that are prone to being overweight. “Regional adiposity” is a major sign that EMS may be at play- this term refers to abnormal development of cresty necks and pads of fat around their shoulders, tailhead, sheath/ udder. Other things to look for include ring-like growth patterns on the hooves, tender feet or unwillingness to work, altered reproductive cycling and ravenous appetites. Diagnosing EMS is done via a blood test that looks at blood glucose and insulin levels. If the blood levels are high, then EMS is diagnosed and management via diet and exercise programs can be started to help decrease the risk of laminitis and other complications. Foot radiographs may also be recommended if signs of laminitis are present. Regular exercise, at least 30mins 4x weekly is recommended as long as the feet are comfortable, and will help decrease excess fat that contributes to the abnormal metabolism present. Diet recommendation is to keep the horse on a low Non-Structural Carbohydrate diet (<12% NSC). Hay analysis is strongly encouraged to confirm this, and soaking hay can help further decrease the NSC content. Feeds such as tested hay, hay cubes, beet pulp, ration balancers and commercial feeds designed for metabolic support are all appropriate options, and will have NSC content listed on their labels. Pasture grass, grain, high sugar treats like molasses, carrots and apples are generally never recommended as the NSC content is way too high for these horse’s system to handle. Speaking to your veterinarian about the best management and supplement options for the individual horse and housing situation is recommended. Owners must maintain strict control of dietary management and be prepared for acute laminitis episodes during seasonal changes (especially spring pasture) and any deviations from the regular daily diet. Managing a horse or pony with

EMS requires a long-term commitment but can be very successful. Cushings Disease (Pars pituitary intermedia dysfunction/ PPID)is a progressive neurodegenerative disease of the pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain. ~20% of horses over age 15 are affected. It causes overproduction of the hormones ACTH and cortisol, which lead to adverse health effects. Laminitis, failure to fight infections, weight loss, infertility can all occur secondarily, and some of these horses also have insulin resistance and regional adiposity because of the high cortisol levels. Owners should look out for long, curly haircoats that don’t shed out, recurrent infections, failing to gain weight, lethargy and excessive drinking/ urinating or sweating. A blood test can be done to assess ACTH levels, and if they are diagnosed with PPID a daily medication called Prascend is recommended to help normalize the ACTH and cortisol levels. Diets similar to the EMS recommendations are helpful in PPID horses who also have insulin resistance issues, and fat sources such as vegetable oils can be added into the diet if the horse needs more calories to help with weight gain. Chronis laminitis and infections are the most difficult part of this disease to manage, but medication and correct diets can greatly decrease the risk of both of these complications. With any PPID and EMS patient, regular check-ups are critical to long-term care. Early recognition and regular vet and farrier care are important to help maintain a good quality of life. Addressing suspect cases of endocrine disease can potentially help senior horses gain and maintain weight through the winter, and aid owners in managing their equine friends effectively to prevent future springtime grass laminitis flares in at risk horses.

Winter nutrition for production and performance In winter months horses and livestock may need more calories to help them maintain their body temperature without decreasing body weight. Adding forage (and when very cold extra concentrates) to the diet in winter months can be highly beneficial for production and performance. Talk to your veterinarian about supplementing the diet with a mineral supplement and make sure cattle and horses are vaccinated, as cold weather stress often reduces immune function. Ideally animals should always have access to water as dehydration can result in impaction problems with livestock .

The way you saddle a horse, how important is it?

Glenn Stewart Horsemanship Expert I wanted to say hello and share some Horsemanship knowledge that has helped thousands of riders in my clinics! To start off, here is an important fact that most people overlook. Most horses are one sided or not balanced and humans mainly are the cause’ Should you saddle your horse mainly from both sides? left side? right side? Take a moment, think about it, most of us do everything on our horse’s left side. Saddling, leading, standing next to them, petting their neck, picking up the left front foot first, loading them in trailers. Because that’s what many of us have been taught. How many times have you done this yourself? Horses very quickly become comfortable with this pattern of seeing us in their left eye. Which causes them to want to keep us in their

left eye. And remember, horses have their eyes on the sides of their heads which means they don’t see us as much out of their right. This is one of many ways that we cause one sided or unbalanced horses. Unbalanced horses have trouble with many things; being straight when needed, round when needed, leads, stopping correctly, how we have to catch them and so on. This is only ONE of the small bits of information we have in our 8 Saddle Tips Mini-Course. Another quick tip on Horsemanship that every rider should know…. Horses rely on body language - in the herd and with us. Because of this, they’re very sensitive to body movements of all kinds. Much more sensitive and aware than most humans. So that means every shake of your rope, movement of your arms, direction we move, how we move, every feeling (like frustration,

fear, anxiety)..., your horse senses and reacts to it. Even if you don’t notice it. So, it’s very important to realize and manage what your body is saying, and even more important to learn how to use this to your advantage. For example, being clear and concise with the zones, the amount of energy you use, the type of pressure... all these things and more make a major difference in the results you will get. Knowing the fundamentals of horsemanship will open doors you didn’t know were closed. Would you like to know how to use and manage your body language better? To communicate more calmly and clearly with your horse? Or to develop a bond you never thought possible? These are just a few of the things that you’ll learn when you join the Glenn Stewart Academy.

Wonowon 4H Club Report — November

B.Y.O.B. With independent nutrition consultant BARRY YAREMCIO

Providing sound independent beef nutrition and management consulting services to cattle producers and the industry.

RINGWORM IN CATTLE

Hi everyone, I hope the start of a new 4-H year is going well for you ! Shipping and picking out our new 4-H animals: We shipped October 3,4 and 5, it went great. Picking out my steer was a bit challenging for me this year, as there were so many good steers, as there always is. I really liked a calf ever since it was born but it has longer legs then I would have wanted, his tail is really short and he is really big. So, I was thinking that I would pick a different steer, but even though there is three things wrong with him, I still really liked his build. I ended up picking him anyway. He is a dark red curly calf with not much white.

Ringworm is a fungal infection that is most commonly observed on younger animals. Outbreaks generally occur in the late fall and winter months. Most of the cases are identified by loss of hair and the formation of scabs in the neck and head region. Young animals are more susceptible to the fungus, but older animals can also be infected. Once an animal has experienced an episode of ringworm, it is unlikely to have a second episode.

Sara picked out a steer that day as well, it was a brown long bodied steer. She also wanted to wait and see one of the calves that was still out on the range at the time, to compare it with the long, brown steer. So she

The main cause of infection is by direct contact between animals. Purchased cattle that have ringworm introduced into a naïve herd is one possible cause. Spores can live for months on surfaces or years in the soil. The disease is spread by direct animal to animal contact or by animals rubbing on infected surfaces such as posts, bars on feeders, and water bowls.Using show equipment between different animals is another source of infection. Spores can be released from the soil in pens.Duration of the infection can be anywhere from 1 to 4 months.

waited until it came in then she compared the two of them, she liked the red steer better. So she too now has a big dark red panda eyed steer. Picking out our 4-H heifers went great, Sara has picked her heifer off her own cow, like she has done for the last three years in a row. I sold one of my cows and decided to give Mom and Dad the money I got from it, trade for one of their heifers, and guess what that is my new 4-H heifer. Weighing the 4-H animals: I am not sure yet when we are weighing them but I think that Sara and I will soon see how big our 4-H animals are. I would also like to welcome our new members in the Wonowon 4-H Club too. — Grace Trask, Wonowon Club Reporter

AREN’T YOU TIRED OF RUNNING YOUR CATTLE THROUGH WITH A “POUR ON” 3 OR 4 TIMES? WHY NOT SWITCH TO A LEWIS CATTLE OILER AND CONTROL BITING AND SUCKING LICE TODAY.

To prevent the spread of the fungal infection, isolate or segregate infected animals from the main herd.Applying a 4% chlorine disinfectant solution onto exposed structural surfaces kills the spores and reduces the spread of the infection. Information in the preceding paragraphs was sourced from the MSD Animal Health website,https://www.msd-animal-health.com/

LEWIS CATTLE OILERS

In an article written by Dr. Roy Lewis in the Alberta Farmer Express (February 2011), he mentions that there are registered vaccines available to treat ringworm, but they are expensive. Some “home remedies” are also available that can reduce the severity of the infection. Removing the crusty material with a stiff brush and then applying “Kopertox” or a Hibitane cream twice on a weekly interval is recommended.

Rugged enough for all livestock 8 Gallon Reservoir • Auto Drape Oiler Included 3-Chain Synthetic Wick Automatic Pumping Feature with Adjustable Recharge Control • Large Loop for Moving

Dr. Lewis cautions that ringworm can infect humans.Use protective clothing, eyewear and gloves when treating infected animals is recommended. For more information on ringworm and treatment options, it is recommended that you consult with your veterinarian.

Government, growers partner on tree fruit stabilization The Province is releasing The Path Forward: A Blueprint for B.C.’s Tree Fruit Industry, which recommends several actions to address the leadership and governance of the sector, enhancing its competitiveness and building on the support provided by the B.C. government. “B.C.’s tree fruit growers play a key role in our province’s food system and our government is committed to the industry’s lasting prosperity,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “The recommendations from this plan provide a clear path on how the sector can change course as we all work together to ensure the economic viability and ongoing legacy of this century-old industry.” B.C. tree fruit growers have faced some extreme challenges over the past years, including the pandemic and the loss of crops due to weather-related events. There has also been a decrease in acreage and profitability over the last decade. The stabilization project, led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food

and Fisheries in consultation with an external advisory committee made up of key stakeholders, was launched in February 2021. The 19 recommendations in the stabilization plan were built from the extensive feedback received during 30 consultation sessions with more than 165 individuals representing all aspects of the industry, including producers, packers, marketers, retailers, researchers and government. Moving forward, the ministry and industry will work together toward implementing the recommendations in the report. Progress will be monitored consistently to ensure a solid path forward for the sector. Quotes: Sukhpaul Bal, grower and president, BC Cherry Growers Association – “The Tree Fruit Industry Stabilization Plan is an important framework to help stabilize our industry. I appreciate how government has engaged us to tackle the important challenges, like climate change and labour,

Peace View Colony Sheep Farm

facing apple, cherry and other tree fruit producers. The long-term viability of the tree fruit industry is not only important to those in it, but to all British Columbians.”

Melissa Teche, general manager, Okanagan-Kootenay Sterile Insect Release –

“The stabilization initiative is very timely and needed. I have been impressed by the process, including the thorough engagement sessions that provided the foundation for thoughtful, analytical and sometimes tough discussions about what industry and government do well, where improvements should be made and new ways to collaborate. I am hopeful that all parties will rally together to do the most difficult part of all: rolling up our sleeves to make sure the plan is put into action.” Avi Gill, grower and director, BC Fruit Growers Association –

Purebred and commercial packages built to suit your farm operation.

“The Tree Fruit Stabilization Initiative has been an intensive process. I believe the recommendations this group has put together will ultimately lead to a sustainable and successful tree

fruit industry. However, there is a lot of work to do and this is just the beginning. It is important that all individuals and organizations involved in the sector look at these recommendations critically and aim to implement them in an effective manner.” Quick Facts: B.C. growers produce Canada’s largest tree fruit crop. The B.C. tree sector is primarily located in the Okanagan with approximately 400 commercial growers. B.C. tree fruit production includes apples, cherries, pears, peaches, apricots, nectarines and plums. In 2019, the industry generated farm gate value of $165 million, of which cherries accounted for $86 million and apples $62 million. The External Advisory Committee represents key industry stakeholders, including the BC Fruit Growers Association, the BC Cherry Association, the New Tree Fruit Variety Development Council, the Sterile Insect Release Program, the BC Grape Growers’ Association, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Crop market demand ‘Weekly updates from the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) provide useful crop market demand information,’ says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development. ‘The Canadian Grain Commission numbers include only movement of bulk crops through facilities licensed by the CGC, so exclude container movement of crops as well as overland crop movement to the U.S.’ The latest CGC numbers on Canadian crop movement from August 1 through October 31 show producer deliveries for most crops are lower due to reduced carryover into this crop year and the drought-reduced crop. The notable exception is barley. Crop year to date barley deliveries into licensed facilities are 1.86 million tonnes compared to 1.48 million tonnes a year ago.

Countering the reduction in available crop supplies are the early completion of harvest and the historically attractive crop prices. Exports of all major Western Canadian crops are lower so far this crop year except for barley. However, exports are not as low as they could be, considering the reduced available supplies. ‘Domestic usage of these major crops is similar to or even higher than year ago levels. For some of these crops such as barley and canola, the current pace of exports plus domestic usage is not sustainable for the balance of the crop year, based on current estimates of available Canadian supplies. The function of price is to meter out demand to available supply. That is why prices have remained at historically high levels and have even exceeded all-time highs for some crops,’ says Blue.

More than 12,000 Albertans visited over 100 farms and ranches at Open Farm Days ‘We are excited with how Alberta Open Farms Days 2021 went,’ says Tim Carson, CEO, Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies. ‘Despite the continuing challenges and uncertainty around COVID-19, Alberta producers and rural communities were excited to share their farms and knowledge to educate people about where their food comes from and to encourage people to shop local. And Albertans were very interested in visiting farms and ranches and participating in the enjoyable and educational events throughout the weekend.’ In 2021, 106 farms and ranches opened their doors to Albertans for Alberta Open Farm Days, an increase of 28% from the previous year. Of that, 36 were new farms. Four agricultural societies also participated – Rosemary, Ardrossan, Smoky Lake and Spruce Grove. Over 12,000 Albertans visited these farms and ranches over the weekend of August 14 and 15, an increase of 19% from 2020. Host farms reported an estimated $46,250 in on-farm sales during the weekend, with additional sales inquiries after the event. ‘There was also a huge increase in culinary participation in 2021. 78 farms had some type of food available for on-site consumption, an increase of 130% from last year. Of those, 44 had food service that included food trucks and food vendors or caterers.’

The purpose of Open Farm Days is twofold: firstly, to educate the public about agriculture in Alberta, and to build public trust towards producers and the industry; and secondly, to increase agri-tourism in Alberta and make both producers and visitors aware of the potential of agri-tourism markets. ‘We also helped support and coach 4 farms with the development of new products. Samples of these products were packaged and available to the host farms that wished to promote them. And several cluster areas were identified and there were 9 markets providing consumers the opportunity to discover and purchase several different local products at one location,’ says Carson. Based on visitor survey responses received, 98% of visitors rated their Open Farm Days experience as very good or excellent. In addition, 89% of visitors agreed or strongly agreed that their understanding and perception of agriculture in Alberta improved as a result of participating in the event. ‘We intend to open the registration for 2022 before the end of 2021 to allow hosts to register and plan in their off season. This will allow more time for coaching the host farms in the areas of marketing and onsite program development. We are looking forward to celebrating the 10th anniversary of Alberta Open Farm Days in 2022. Alberta Open Farm Days would not be possible without the

incredible hosts who welcome visitors to their farms or the tremendous support of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry and Travel Alberta,’ says Carson.

Apply for an Agricultural Society Innovation Award ‘Based on the success of the 2020 pilot project, the Agricultural Society Innovation Award is now a standing program of Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development,’ says Susan Lacombe, program coordinator. ‘This award allows us to work together to champion and celebrate the significant contributions that agricultural societies make, while inspiring others to take action.’ During the pandemic in 2020, many agricultural societies found new ways to serve their communities, while following public health guidelines. Societies stepped up with creative and innovative ways to support and connect their communities by running online fundraisers, creating virtual programs and fairs, offering contactless catering, meal pickup and delivery, and organizing outdoor drive-in concerts, events and movies. Three of those societies were recognized for the innovation and resilience shown during the pandemic with inaugural Agricultural Society Innovation Awards – Bezanson Agricultural Society, Millarville Racing & Agricultural Society and Grande Prairie Regional Agricultural & Exhibition Society. ‘Up to 3 agricultural societies will be recognized at the upcoming

Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies annual convention in February 2022. Innovations should be something that is new to the agricultural society, and demonstrate how the society continued to positively impact community engagement, recovery and reopening during the last year.’ The winners will each receive a banner suitable for display in their area or community hall to mark this achievement, along with a formal certificate of recognition. Applications for the 2021 award are now available. The deadline to apply is November 30, 2021. ‘Agricultural societies matter and this is one small way for us to say thank you for the critical work they do in building a stronger Alberta,’ says Lacombe. Contact Connect with Susan Lacombe: Hours: 8:15 am to 4:30 pm (open Monday to Friday, closed statutory holidays) Phone: 780-968-6557 Toll free: 310-0000 before the phone number (in Alberta)

Helping agri-businesses develop clean technologies Agri-businesses across Canada are leaders in climate-smart agriculture, and continue to find new ways to help Canadian farmers make their operations more sustainable. A canola field with its yellow flowers on a sunny day, in which there are 5 grain silos and a row of solar panels However, the cost of creating and developing clean agricultural technology can seem overwhelming. Research costs can be a major barrier to going green. As part of the Government of Canada’s new $165.7-million Agricultural Clean Technology (ACT) Program, the Research and Innovation (R&I) stream provides access to funding to help develop the latest clean technologies to

Indigenous Veterans Day is a beautiful day

Indigenous Veterans Day 2021 was a cold and snowy affair and everyone was grateful that Ole Smokes Coffee was on in the Original Nines Riders Centre! Our facility proudly serves Ole Smokes Coffee which is Veteran Owned! Many special guests were unable to attend thanks to the roads being so slippery. The day before the ceremony it was motorcycle weather and the day of I spent 2.5 hours shovelling sidewalks! The ceremony was live streamed by CIA Solutions an Indigenous owned Video house here in Grande Prairie. Over 3,000 people have watched the live streamed ceremony thanks to our sponsor ARC Resources. Our photographer, Tammenithia Diesel of Diesel Powered Images did an amazing job capturing the moments as she has since the first time we held this ceremony. Dignitaries in attendance: Elder Joey Farnsworth who ran the Smudging ceremony, Bill + Betty Chalifoux on behalf of the ANAVETS Unit 389, Len Auger, President of the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre, Mayor of Grande Prairie, Jackie Clayton along with councillors; O’Toole, RumbleAlberta.com

Northern Alberta Sponsors

Thiessen, Bosch + Berg, President of the Grande Prairie Legion, Larry wood and VP Frank Scolly, Staff Sgt Shawn Graham, Marcel Arcand of Alexander First Nation, Heather Wood on behalf of Metis Families, Piper John Haggery and Drummer Stanley Arcand. There were many speeches of regret, and speeches delivered by those in attendance, and all were heartfelt and very moving, but it was drummer Stanley Arcand from Alexander First Nation in Treaty Six who moved people to tears. Stanley is fluent in Cree. He speaks it daily as he believes his language is a gift from the Creator and he needs to use his language daily to honour the Creator for that gift. The words he spoke during the ceremony and the words that he wrote and then sang to us conveyed pride, joy and sorrow and instinctively the audience knew what his music and words meant. He is a most talented Drummer and Singer and we were so honoured that he came from Morinville to sing and drum for us. At the end of the ceremony we unveiled the “Thank You Plaque” from us at the CMTA to ANAVETS Unit 389, thanking them for the donation of the land that Veterans Memorial Gardens + Interpretive Centre is built on. Honouring our Fallen ~ Thanking our serving Soldiers and our Veterans ~ Indigenous Veterans Day 2021 is in the books as a day that filled souls.

Indigenous Veterans Day is a beautiful day meant to honour the serving soldier, the veteran, to remember the fallen and to do so in a ceremony that is part military and part Indigenous. A ceremony where the soldier’s family and the soldier’s military family join to be one.

Selling Farm Land, It’s All We Do The customer’s always write… As first time users of this sale method we were both hesitant and unsure, but as auctioneers ourselves we also realized that the most accurate and fair representation of market value is via public auction. The entire team at CLHbid.com are both courteous and professional and CLHbid did not leave any marketing opportunity unused in pursuit of buyers. The platform was simple, easy to understand and user-friendly for both ends of the transaction. Overall we are very pleased with the outcome of our sale!

Mike Kosick/Tyler Kosick | Ranchers, Auctioneers & Aggregate Contractors - Kelowna BC & Salmon Arm BC

A neighbor’s ranch that had been in their family for generations was listed for sale by real estate as one listing of over 40 quarter sections. None of us neighbors wanted or could afford it all and the real estate listing finally expired with no offers. The owners then put the land up for sale with CLHbid.com. This suited us neighbors perfectly and in the end seven of us bought the land we each wanted. I was able to bid on and buy my land from my house. CLHbid gave us all notice of the sale and allowed all neighbors an equal chance.

James Baier | Rancher – Compeer, AB

As both a seller and buyer of agricultural land, I have made use of various platforms over the years. Most platforms, including those of the large auction companies, are very busy, as they try and sell everything from used lawnmowers to irrigated quarters. Whether selling or buying land, I much prefer the CLHbid platform. The CLHbid.com website is easy to navigate and user friendly to bid on. At the end of the day, I am confident that by just focusing on farmland, CLHbid.com brings a much higher value to sellers. I have used CLHbid.com to sell land in the past and would for sure use them again.

Our family would like to thank CLHbid.com for all their expertise and help in selling our farm land. Every aspect was carried out in an absolutely professional manner. The entire CLHbid.com team was very great to deal with and very accommodating. We would certainly recommend CLHBid.com if selling Agricultural land.

Bob & Yvonne Hartell | Ranchers - Strathmore, AB

CLHbid is an excellent company to work with! Downsizing our farming operation was a difficult decision. The entire CLHbid team was professional, helpful, knowledgeable and prompt in all our interactions. They made selling our farmland a smooth, stress-free venture. We would highly recommend them!!

Ernie & Jacquie Warawa | Farmers - Vegreville, AB

Tried listing with real estate for over 2 years and could not even get an offer. With CLHbid.com having legal, accounting, and farm expertise coupled with community respect, the decision was easy. The CLHbid.com team was motivated, reliable and marketed the land in a professional way. The incredible part is CLHbid.com ended up selling it for well over what it was listed for.

Expanded 911 service may soon be available along remote stretches of the Alaska Highway in Northeast B.C. The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality is seeking provincial grant support to fund five call box locations at Prophet River, Summit Lake, between Toad River and Muncho Lake, Liard River, and at Army Hill north of Fireside. “Unreliable wireless coverage is a safety concern to the public in the Northern Rockies since residents, travelers and workers cannot access emergency services in areas without cell service,” the municipality stated in a release on Thursday. According to the municipality, the regional council has pre-approved a budget of $119,000 for the initiative, conditional on grant funding through the Connecting British Columbia program. The municipality would contribute $12,000 to the capital costs if successful, and the regional council has also approved the necessary operating costs of $20,000 to be spent over 2022, 2023, and 2024. If the grant funding is secured, the project is anticipated to begin in early 2022, with installation to take place in spring, according to the municipality. The proposed call boxes would be solar powered and have a backup battery. The call boxes would be available 24-7 throughout the year and connect directly to the municipality’s 911 provider, Grande Prairie Fire Rescue.

NEW BP 660/661 BALE PRO® by Highline Manufacturing - A Division of Bourgault Industries Ltd.

NEW BP 660 BALE PRO® - With many new enhancements this is a great option for cattle operations looking for a durable, well-engineered bale processor. The BP 660 Bale Pro® has a dual feed roller processing chamber with a centrally driven flail drum processor (pictured left). Expand your BP 660 by adding a Feed Chopper™ and Grain Tank. NEW BP 661 BALE PRO® - Many new enhancements have been added to this model but unlike the BP 660 Bale Pro®, the 661 Bale Pro® has a slat and chain processing chamber with an offset flail drum. Expand your BP 661 by adding a Feed Chopper™ and Grain Tank.

FEED CHOPPER™ The Feed Chopper™, exclusively from Highline®, is a secondary processing option to create shorter cut lengths. Rather than stationary knives that pulverize or drag leaves off of stems, the Highline® Feed Chopper™ truly slices through the hay creating an optimal consistency. The Feed Chopper™ is a great alternative to tub grinders.
