Silver Willow 4H Club Report The Silver Willow 4H Club is up and running once again this year. The club has been around for 45 years. We have 21 members that are enrolled in either beef, sheep or soil projects. We started off our year with a Zoom meeting, due to Covid restrictions, to determine the 4H roles that the members would have this year. Our next get together will be in person, but outside, to follow regulations. This is my second year with a beef project. My sisters also have beef projects this year, so we have four steers. My sisters and I have started to halter train them and get them used to being groomed. My steer is getting more friendly,

and I have named him Buff. We had our first weigh-in on November 7 at our leader’s house. It was a beautiful day but a little slick from the wet ground that has not frozen yet. After we weighed our steers we vaccinated them. Thank you to North Peace Vet Clinic for your generous donation of vaccinations and dewormer for our projects. Our steers need to be vaccinated in order to qualify for insurance. For our next meeting we are hoping for some more snow because we are supposed to be going sledding! That’s all for this month. — 4H report by Wren Shipley

Federal and B.C. agriculture ministers host roundtable discussion with agri-food sector Marie-Claude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Lana Popham, British Columbia’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries held a virtual roundtable with B.C.’s agricultural sector yesterday to listen to their concerns following the devastating floods and landslides and to discuss both immediate and long-term support for the B.C. agriculture and agri-food industry. Extreme weather events in B.C. have caused many agricultural producers and their families to struggle in extremely challenging circumstances as they deal with the loss of businesses, homes, livestock, crops and livelihoods. With over 800 farms in British

Columbia currently under evacuation orders, the ministers recognized the producers’ courage and perseverance and indicated they are working together to make sure that producers have the resources they need to maintain their mental health and help rebuild their operations. These events are indicative of climate change. As Canada works to meet its climate change goals, it will also work with the sector to ensure that it is better prepared and more resilient when these types of events happen. The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Premier of British Columbia, John Horgan,

recently announced a committee of federal and provincial ministers who will work together and with Indigenous leadership to guide immediate and ongoing support to British Columbia families, businesses, farmers and communities affected by the extreme weather events. The committee will also collaborate on recovery and rebuilding efforts, including by providing support to the sectors that have been most affected by the crisis. The federal and provincial governments are taking concrete action to respond, including the recent provincial request to launch a joint assessment under the AgriRecovery Framework, which provides federal and provincial funding to help producers recover from natural disasters. Federal and provincial officials are working with the utmost urgency to complete the joint assessment and help producers with their extraordinary costs. Outreach is already underway to specific provincial commodity groups to determine these costs and replacement values. Programming under AgriRecovery will roll out as soon as those assessments and the program design are completed. Minister Bibeau also highlighted the work of Canadian Armed Forces personnel, who have been on the ground since mid-November to help farmers rescue livestock, resupply food to isolated communities, help repair critical infrastructure and assist with supply chain movement. The Government of Canada will continue to monitor the situation and will continue working with the province and industry to reduce impacts on food security, local food supply chains, animal welfare, as well as related producer operations. “It has been inspiring to see farm families, their communities and emergency response forces pull together through this ongoing crisis. This crisis has taken a toll on many farmer’s livelihoods and their mental health, and they need to know we are here for them. Our Government will continue to do whatever we can to support British Columbia farmers and the provincial government with the devastating challenges they face today. Yesterday’s meeting with B.C.’s agriculture leaders was an important opportunity for Minister Popham and I to hear directly what we can do together to help address the situation,” said the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food “The Government of Canada will continue to aid in the recovery efforts being undertaken by the Province of British Columbia. Providing relief, and recovering from the aftermath of a flood, is a long-term proposition, and we are committed to providing the necessary assistance to get people through this difficult time. continued on next page

The roundtable discussion with agri-food continues! My thoughts are with the agricultural producers and all those who have been negatively impacted within the agricultural sector by these recent extreme weather events,” added, the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of Emergency Preparedness. “Our governments have committed to work together, and listening intently to farmers and producers so we can provide the support needed to help them get back on their feet, with their farms back in production. This includes developing an AgriRecovery program that will be available in the weeks ahead, with its

key focus on helping producers through the assessment, recovery and reconstruction phases, so we can get them working, and they can get back to producing the food that British Columbians count on,” added the Honourable Lana Popham, B.C. Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries During a crisis such as this, farmers facing the stress and uncertainty of providing for their families may suffer serious mental health impacts. The Government of Canada is committed to increasing the availability of highquality mental health services for all individuals in Canada. Support

services are available through various resources including: Farm Credit Canada’s Rooted in Strength initiative, which (fcc-fac.ca) raises awareness of mental health warning signs and available resources. The Do More Ag Foundation (domore.ag) , a not-for-profit organization focusing on mental health in agriculture across Canada. Wellness Together Canada (wellnesstogether.ca) , an online mental health and substance use resource portal that provides free, credible information and supports.

Producers have access to a suite of Business Risk Management (BRM) programs (agriculture. canada.ca) to help them manage significant risks that threaten the viability of their farm and are beyond their capacity to manage. AgriRecovery is a federalprovincial-territorial disaster relief framework intended to work together with the core BRM programs to help agricultural producers recover from natural disasters and helps with the extraordinary costs associated with recovering from disaster events.

Helping those in need access food

Canadian Grain Commission

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many Canadians struggling to get food on the table. More Canadians are turning to food banks and local food organizations to help feed their families. However, due to the higher demand and fewer resources, these organizations are facing significant challenges. To meet the urgent needs of Canadians who do not have access to adequate food, the Government of Canada has provided a $100-million top-up to the Emergency Food Security Fund (EFSF). The EFSF provides funding to national and regional organizations, who then support food banks and local food organizations across Canada. The new funding is being divided between Food Banks Canada, Second Harvest, Community Food Centres Canada, Breakfast Club of Canada, Salvation Army, and La Tablée des Chefs—six organizations with a proven track record and networks in place to quickly get food to Canadians in need. Local organizations use the funding to purchase and distribute food and other necessities to those who urgently need it, and purchase personal protective equipment to help keep everyone safe. To date, the fund has supported more than 4,800 local food initiatives across Canada, including over 1,000 directly supporting Indigenous organizations and communities. In particular, it has supported 150 projects in Yukon, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories — regions where supply is already difficult in normal times due to their remote locations. This additional funding will continue to help improve access to food for Canadians who are in need due to the pandemic.

Testing Of New Sainfoin Lines For B Trial Site: Fairview Research Farm Collaborator: Dr. Surya Acharya - Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Lethbridge Research Coordinator: Dr. Akim Omokanye From: Peace Country Beef & Forage Association 2016 Annual Report Sainfoin is a perennial forage legume that does not cause bloat because of its condensed tannin concentration. The condensed tannin is very effective at preventing deadly pasture bloat in ruminants. Studies have shown that 15% or more sainfoin in alfalfa mixture can significantly lower, and in certain cases eliminates, the risk of pasture bloat. However, until recently, available sainfoin varieties have not survived well in mixed stands with alfalfa or have not regrown at the same rate after the first cut or grazing and so cannot be used with alfalfa for reducing pasture bloat. Recent studies have shown that new experimental sainfoin lines are more competitive and have improved regrowth rates compared to older sainfoin varieties. Sainfoin is said to be as nutritious and palatable as alfalfa, and more cold and drought tolerant. In collaboration with Dr. Surya Acharya (AAFC, Lethbridge), PCBFA tested some experimental sainfoin lines (LRC 3900, LRC 3901 & LRC 3902) in mixtures with AC Grazeland alfalfa variety to evaluate their growth, persistency and forage yield. The experimental sainfoin lines were developed by Dr. Surya Acharya. The tests were to help us determine if these experimental sainfoin lines developed for their ability to survive with alfalfa could outperform an older sainfoin variety called Nova. One of the experimental sainfoin lines (LRC-3902) was recently re-leased as AC Mountainview by Dr. Surya Acharya. Methods

Three experimental sainfoin lines (LRC05-3900, LRC05-3901, LRC05-3902) along with an older sainfoin variety called Nova (check) were each seeded in mixtures with AC Grazeland alfalfa on May 23, 2013 at the Fairview Research Farm (NW5-82-3W6) on RR #35. Both sainfoin and alfalfa were seeded in the same row (same row mixtures). AC Grazeland alfalfa is a low-bloat potential alfalfa, because this variety results in a slower initial rate of digestion, which helps prevent the onset of bloat. The soil at the test site had a pH of 5.4 and 8.8% organic matter before seeding. Each mixture was seeded with 15 lbs/acre of sainfoin and 6 lbs/acre of AC Grazeland alfalfa, indicating that half of the usual recommended seeding rates were used for both legumes. The 4 treatment mixtures were replicated 4 times in small plots, which had been arranged in a randomized complete block design. Seeding was 0.5-0.7” deep, and the seed was inoculated. We applied 40 lbs/ acre of 11-52-0 at seeding in 2013. Assure II and Basagran Forte were used to control volunteer oats & canola and other broad leaf weeds in the seeding/establishment year (2013). Cutting was done twice yearly from 2014 to 2016. The first cut was when sainfoin was at 40-50% bloom (alfalfa was at 20-30% bloom) and mostly from June 20-23 every year. The second cut was at 6 weeks after the first cut. Please note that the highest risk of bloat occurs when legumes are in the pre-bud or vegetative stage. In 2015, only one cut was possible because deer had selectively grazed down all sainfoin stands in the mixtures just before the second cut was to be taken. From 2014 to 2016, forage dry matter (DM) yield and percent composition (proportion) of sainfoin and alfalfa in the mixtures were determined. In 2016, second cut was done on August 2. Rainfall received at the site from April 1 to August 31 was 9.516” (2013), 4.944” (2014), 6.726” (2015) and 13.504” (2016). Results Obtained and Implications Forage Dry matter yield (Figure 1) In general, DM yield at any particular cut was statistically similar for the sainfoin - alfalfa mixtures in 2014, 2015 or 2016. In 2014 (one year after seeding), DM yield was generally lower for the 2nd cut (1143-1495 lbs DM/acre) than 1st cut (3114-3685 lbs DM/acre). The lower DM yield obtained for the 2nd cut in 2014 was due to low moisture. In Fairview and area, 2014 was a very dry year. Overall, from 2014 to 2016, including any particular sainfoin in the legume mix did not appear to reduce yields.

Bloat-Free Alfalfa Pasture Mixtures Proportion of Sainfoin and alfalfa in the mixtures The proportions of sainfoin in alfalfa mixtures at every cut are shown in Table 1. Generally, except for Nova sainfoin in 2016 (which had 5-6% sainfoin in the mixtures), sainfoin formed 18% or more of the total forage composition. Overall, the 3 experimental sainfoins produced higher proportion of DM in alfalfa pasture mixtures than Nova. The 3 experimental sainfoins consistently formed 20% or more in the mixtures. This is important because at least 15% sainfoin needs to be present in the alfalfa stand to avoid bloat.

Compared to the 3 experimental lines, the drastic drop in the proportion of sainfoin for Nova from a mean of 22% in 2014 to a mean of 6% in 2016 (Figure 2) probably confirms that an older sainfoin variety such as Nova would not be as competitive as the new sainfoin in alfalfa pasture mixtures. Overall, LRC-3900, LRC-3901 and LRC-3902 dropped by 14, 11 and 8% over the 3 years of cut. Nova dropped by 16% over the same period. Our study further shows that when seeded with alfalfa, the experimental sainfoins should be able to provide bloat protection for more growing seasons than Nova or other older sainfoin varieties.

Conclusion Our results show that Nova sainfoin may not be good competitor with alfalfa in pasture mixtures compared to any of the 3 experimental lines. As indicated earlier, studies have shown that 15% or more sainfoin in an alfalfa pasture mixture would significantly lower, and in certain cases eliminates, the risk of bloat. Our study here at the Fairview Research Farm, indicates Nova sainfoin, which contained only 6% in 2016 in alfalfa pasture mixtures may not have the potential to lower bloat a few years after seeding.

One (LRC05-3902) of the 3 experimental sainfoin lines used in this study has been released as AC Mountainview sainfoin. The use of AC Mountainview sainfoin variety in alfalfa pasture mixtures is recommended. Some Tips to Manage Bloat (Extracts from AAF: Feeding Legumes to Cattle, Agdex 420/62-1) • Use non-bloating legumes such as cicer milkvetch, sainfoin and birdsfoot trefoil. Be aware, these forages are not as good as alfalfa in terms of yield, re-growth and persistence in the stand. • Low-bloat potential alfalfa - AC Grazeland. This variety results in a slower initial rate of digestion, which helps prevent the onset of bloat. • Legume-grass mixtures - improves animal and pasture productivity as well as managing bloat. When legumes are planted with grasses, their presence can improve animal performance by as much as 30%, and even more when seeded in pure stands. • Products or supplements to manage bloat - AlfasureT, Bloat Guardr (Poloxalene) and ionophores. • NEVER move hungry cattle into legume pastures in the morning. • Put animals out to pasture in the afternoon, so plants have a chance to dry off. • Feed another source of dry roughage (long fibre) before grazing bloat-causing legumes. • Maintain a uniform and regular intake of forages. Once cattle have started grazing, leave them on the pasture, even at night. • When animals are first put on pasture, check them at least twice a day. Some animals are chronic bloaters. Watch for these animals, and remove them from the pasture if needed. • Graze full bloom mature plants. PCBFA On-going High Legume Pasture Project with Sainfoin Collaborator: Conrad Dolen, Fourth Creek PCBFA is part of a two-year province wide field scale trial (10 acres) to showcase the potential of sainfoin in a high-legume pasture mix. Our site is at the Dolen’s in Fourth Creek. A high legume pasture mix (60% legumes, 40% grasses) was seeded in 2016. AC Mountainview sainfoin variety was used in the mixture. PCBFA is planning a field day at the site in summer 2017 to highlight the project. Perils over the holidays commonly seen around the holidays as people are visiting, children are playing and dogs are out of their routine. Christmas holidays is when our comfort foods come out: ham, cheesy potatoes, fried foods, sweets. Some dogs can be very sensitive to the fat in the foods, causing pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas – the organ that produces the enzymes that help break down our food. When the pancreas is damaged, these enzymes start attacking it. Dogs will vomit frequently, have diarrhea, lose their appetite, have stomach pain, have a hunched back and have a fever. Pancreatitis can be life threatening and dogs should be treated as soon as possible. Treatment consists of intravenous fluids in hospital and medications.

Dr. Charlotte Corbett Holidays are a wonderful time for gathering with friends and family, enjoying sweets, and relaxing. Some pets love this time of year, enjoying all the attention and the food that falls on the floor. Often cats enjoy having a tree in their own living room to climb. Unfortunately, we do see an increase of certain emergencies. Pancreatitis, chocolate toxicity, dog bites and plant toxicity are things

Although we love chocolate, it can be dangerous for our pets. Chocolate contains theobromine, but not all chocolate has the same amount. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is. Chocolate toxicity can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and a racing heart rate. If a dog consumes enough, they will get muscle tremors, seizures and even heart failure. Not every dose of chocolate is fatal; even if your dog eats a small amount, always call your veterinarian. We can determine how high the dose is based on the amount, what type of chocolate and how big your dog is. This can help us decide the best treatment for your dog. Foreign bodies can occur at any time in the year, but dogs can be at increased risk at Christmas due to all the other activity around the holidays. Cats in particular are at risk for linear foreign bodies with string and ribbon. Animals will eat foreign objects, whether it be toys, objects from around the house, socks, underwear, bones or grandma’s knitting project. Cats and dogs will be lethargic and commonly vomit, but not always. Diarrhea is also common, as is stomach pain and a hunched posture. Some objects pass through on their own, or with supplemental fluids. Other objects need to be removed with surgery. Plants are dangerous to dogs, as well as your cats. Christmas trees can cause irritation if

chewed on or trauma if they fall on your animals. Plants to steer clear of or ensure they are high up and out of reach of your animals: • Poinsettias: These are mildly toxic, causing irritation to the mouth and esophagus when swallowed. Animals will drool and vomit. • Holly & Mistletoe: These plants contain chemicals that will cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and drooling. If a cat eats enough of the plant, their blood pressure and heart rate will drop. In severe reactions, seizures and death can occur. • All lilies can cause toxicity to an extent, especially in cats. Even a small amount (a few leaves) can cause kidney failure. • Azaleas / Rhododendron: This plant can change how the body responds to sodium, causing drooling, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea and heart failure. Christmas can have more hazards then normal life, but there are some ways to make it safer. Most of the emergencies we see during the holidays are due to dog fights and dogs eating things they shouldn’t. When introducing new dogs to your household, have them meet on a neutral ground – a dog park or front lawn. This allows them to get to know each other without getting defensive of their home. When mixing households, feed in different rooms to avoid food aggression and bites. Cats can be introduced one at a time – Feliway Friends diffusers are a good way to keep everyone calm as well. Keep an eye on your furry friends, especially around children (and some husbands). Treats should be dog treats – avoid human food, especially those with garlic, onion, grapes, raisons, and chocolate. Split treats into multiple pieces, especially when showing off tricks, so they are not also gaining the Christmas weight! If your pet is on a special diet, make sure to tell your guests not to feed them, even a bite – it can prevent flare-ups, especially dogs with allergies. If your cat is prone to stress-induced bladder issues, keep them in a quiet area of the house where they can be alone. Happy Holidays and enjoy time with your furry friends, whether they are cats, dogs, horses, cattle or our exotic friends!

Winter hydration - check your stock heaters regularly! Ideally, all animals should always have access to water as dehydration can result in impaction problems in both livestock and pets. Frequent checks should be performed on water heaters and deicers to insure they are powered an functioning properly. Electrical shorts in these devices can result in animals not drinking from these water sources.

Sometimes the best part of a clinic can be getting a better picture of what to ask for in the first place! Clinics are structured around a specific Stage, the building blocks in Glenn’s Horse Development Program. Clinics are typically 2 to 4 days in length in a variety of locations. Check out our Calendar for a list of scheduled clinics. Interested in hosting a clinic? Contact sandy@thehorseranch.com

Invitation to dairy farmers

Happy Holidays

from the Peace Country Beef & Forage Association Crew

A prime objective of any business is to have a good understanding of how well it is performing. Important parts of measuring that performance include tracking revenues, expenses, and profit margins.’ The Dairy Cost Study is an annual program where dairy farmers provide farm information over the course of a year. This information is compiled, creating a business analysis on the cost and returns of producing milk at their farm. This analysis is a tool to help identify and start the thought processes and conversations on how to manage costs. The data of all the participating farms is then combined to produce an Alberta benchmark document called the Economics of Milk Production. ‘Farming is becoming more complex, and there is a need to go back to the basics to really know how your business is performing. It is important to know the details. Only once you have a complete picture of your business can you better manage its opportunities. Annual budgeting and planning are better when you use your own numbers. Having your own numbers in front of you helps assess farm management options.’ Van Biert uses these questions as some examples that the Dairy Cost Study final farm analysis will help answer. How will the dry conditions of 2021 and increase in feed, fuel and electricity prices affect my cost of production? How will the proposed increase to farm gate milk price affect my income? My total vet costs are higher than I thought. Why? What can I do about it? How much are my cows producing? Is this satisfactory, or should I try to up my production to fill my quota or buy some more cows? What is my cost per kilogram of butterfat? ‘Being in the program and receiving your detailed farm analysis is free. The cost is the investment of time, and the payback can be huge.’ Van Biert adds a current participant found that the time invested in the program is well spent and the results are useful when making decisions. This participant has been in the program every year for over 10 years and continues to get value from the analysis.

PROGENY OF THESE DONOR DAMS ON OFFER

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH, 2021

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE? To be added to NGCMP our mailing list, contact Pete Stahl (780) 835-8291 or Albert Stahl (780) 834-7055 1. The Northway sire’s you invest in bring with them the opportunity to sell your calves through the NGCMP that we’ve set up specifically to get you a premium price for your calves.

2. We dedicate a lot of effort and research in the cattle business and the genetics we build on are specifically designed to be a premium end product in the packing plant or out in the pasture working as mother cows.

23

R0011841368

3. We want the opportunity to buy Northway-sired calves back from our customers: paying you, the customer, a premium for those type of calves is still going to be more profitable for us in the end. 4. If you are interested in the NGCMP, please contact us and we will explain how it will work and hopefully get you set up. 5. We will explain the details of the NGCMP on sale day before the sale. Be sure to tune in on DLMS if you can’t make it to the sale.

To be added to our mailing list, contact Pete Stahl (780) 835-8291 or Albert Stahl (780) 834-7055

Canada’s Ministers of Ag hold annual meeting

B.Y.O.B.

Federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) Ministers of Agriculture wrapped up their annual conference on November 10, 2021 by issuing the Guelph Statement – their shared vision, priorities and principles for the next agricultural policy framework and the future of the sector. The Guelph Statement will position our agri-food producers and processors for continued success on the journey towards sustainable agriculture, and will enable a globally competitive sector, according to FPT Ministers.

With independent nutrition consultant BARRY YAREMCIO

The Statement was released at the close of the Ministers’ three-day conference in Guelph, Ontario, their first face-to-face meeting in nearly two years. The Statement recognizes regional differences and a commitment to collective outcomes, and it reflects input received through industry and stakeholder consultations over the past year.

Providing sound independent beef nutrition and management consulting services to cattle producers and the industry.

In the Statement, Ministers agreed on the sustainable agriculture approach needed to help shape the next policy framework and agreed on five priority areas:

Limitations When Feeding Low Quality Forage to Cows

climate change and environment; science, research and innovation; market development and trade; building sector capacity, growth and competitiveness; and resiliency and public trust. Ministers also agreed to continue to improve the suite of business risk management programs to make them timely, equitable, and easy to understand. The next framework will also work to enhance sector resiliency to anticipate, mitigate and respond to risks, in part through those programs.

A balanced feeding program is designed to meet the nutritional requirement of the animal. Size of animal, stage of production, environmental conditions, health status and body condition; all impact the requirements. The first two nutrients of concern when balancing rations are protein and energy. The following table has recommendations for energy (TDN) and protein for mature cows on a dry basis.* Animal Cows Mid Pregnancy Cows Late Pregnancy Cows Lactating

% TDN 55 60 65

% Protein 7 9 11

* Alberta Agriculture Fact Sheet AgDex 420/52-4

The next framework will follow the current Canadian Agricultural Partnership, which expires on March 31, 2023. The Partnership is a fiveyear $3 billion investment that supports Canada’s agri-food and agriproducts sectors, and includes both federal programs, as well as those that are cost-shared between the federal (60%) and provincial/territorial (40%) governments.

With tight feed supplies, adding straw, slough hay, or forage seed aftermath to pregnant cow rations extends the higher quality forage supply and reduces cost. The cow’s nutrient requirements need to be met to prevent various problems. Straw is included as a filler when feeding a high quality forage to pregnant cows. Using feed test results to develop a balanced ration, the inclusion rates the two feeds iscalculated. After the protein and energy requirements are met, attention must be paid to macro and trace minerals along with vitamins A, D, and E. As forages mature, fibre content increases. There are two types of fibre that are used when balancing a ration. Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF) is used to determine the energy content in forages, and Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF) is an indirect measure of how much feed an animal is able to consume daily. NDF content in higher quality forages is approximately 45 to 50%, and is between 65 to 75% for cereal straws and can be higher for other types of straw.

During the conference, Ministers also discussed other key action areas that will help position the sector for economic recovery and sustainable growth, including labour, African swine fever, Animal Health Canada, trade and market access, regulatory priorities, retail fees and mental health. This meeting followed what has been a difficult year for many producers, mainly due to extreme weather conditions, resulting in crop losses, poor crop quality, and reduced forage and water supplies for livestock. Despite these challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic, exports of agriculture and agri-food products continue to grow: nearly $74 billion in 2020, compared to $67 billion in 2019.

NDF is the most difficult component for the rumen microflora to digest. When total NDF content in a ration exceeds 60% or NDF intake exceeds 1.2% of animal body weight on a dry matter basis; feed intake is reduced. Animals will appear to be very full when the ration is at or exceeds NDF limits. Daily feed intake can be reduced by 3 to 5 pounds or more. This reduces the amount of nutrients consumed on a daily basis. Inclusion rates of each feed must meet energy and protein requirements, but also not exceed the upper limits for NDF intake.

Potatoes are both hot and cool in Canada! We grow more potatoes than any other vegetable in Canada! Manitoba led the country in potato production in 2020, followed by Alberta and Prince Edward Island. Whether you’re savouring potatoes for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you’re also supporting the Canadian agriculture sector. To celebrate one of Canada’s most important vegetables, let us show you that there is more to potatoes than meets the “eyes”. Using potato waste to make green plastics In Canada, we process an enormous amount of potatoes to make French fries, instant mashed potatoes, and chips. Scientists at the University of Alberta have found a way to transform the waste derived from the processing of potatoes into biodegradable plastic, similar to plastic wrap. Expanding the menu for people with diabetes Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada scientist Dr. Benoît Bizimungu and his team created a new potato variety with a low glycemic index (GI). High GI foods cause a large spike in blood sugar after eating. Since the management of blood sugar is important for people with diabetes, this can be a problem. This new low GI potato digests slowly, and doesn’t cause a large spike in blood sugar, allowing people with diabetes to enjoy potatoes more frequently.

Using drones to improve potato yield In Atlantic Canada, potato farmers are looking for ways to improve their potato yields. Our scientists worked with universities, producers and industry, using drone technology (Video) and specialized cameras, to identify areas within potato fields that are not performing well. The drones take photos from above, which gives scientists a look at entire fields. This allows them to pinpoint sections with unhealthy crops more easily. Once they have identified the areas, scientists look at factors that impact growth, such as soil health, plant stress, and nutrient management. They can then apply precision agriculture solutions and save resources by treating the parts of the field that need it most. Some of these solutions include adjusting nutrient levels and adding soil amendments.

Potatoes for all occasions Need a tasty meal? Potatoes are a great option! We grow about 150 varieties in Canada. With that much variety, there is a perfect potato for every dish! Russet potatoes are ideal for baking, mashing or frying. They have a high starch content giving them a dry fluffy texture when they’re cooked. Red skin potatoes and other lower starch varieties are best for salads and soups because they hold their shape well. The Yukon Gold is a superb all-purpose potato and it was developed right here in Canada. It will hold its shape and taste great, mashed or fried!

Helping meet global demand for sustainable protein products Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable MarieClaude Bibeau, announced an investment of more than $4.3 million to support Canada’s pulse and special crops farmers meet growing consumer demand for sustainable, high-quality plantbased protein. Investments will support international marketing activities to find foreign buyers, improve performance of transportation networks and reduce the risks posed by international trade barriers. By increasing the market for Canadian-made pulse products, these investments will encourage more farmers to add the nitrogen-fixing crops into their rotations, thereby increasing residual nitrogen in the soil and reducing the need for synthetic nitrogen fertilizers for subsequent annual grain crops. An investment of more than $2.3 million will enable Pulse Canada to continue to develop its ‘25 by 25’ strategy to have 25 per cent of pulse production in new markets by 2025. Pulse Canada will use the funding to promote the benefits

of pulses and their ingredient derivatives to international food manufacturers and foodservice operators as a sustainable, valueadded, healthy ingredient across a wide range for food sectors. In addition, close to $1.5 million in funding will enhance the Ag Transport Coalition Railway Performance Measurement Program, an important asset for the grain sector. It provides individual shippers with insight on supply chain performance and a common data platform to find transportation solutions to effectively and efficiently get their products to market. A further $429,000 will help Pulse Canada assess and resolve barriers to international trade, including challenges created by the pandemic and create more stability for exports. The Canadian Special Crops Association (CSCA) is also receiving $127,944 to advance international opportunities for Canada’s pulse and special crops industry, which includes beans, chickpeas, lentils, peas, canary

“This announcement is winwin. On the one hand we are expanding markets for Canadianmade protein products, and on the other hand, we are encouraging farmers to plant more pulses which are a sustainable solution to soil and crop management. Now more than ever, consumers around the world are demanding sustainable, nutritious sources of plant protein and the Canadian pulse and other high protein crops industries continue to

lead the way,” said Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Corey Loessin, Chair of Pulse Canada, echoed the comments. “Canada leads the world in the production and exportation of sustainable, nutritious pulses and pulse ingredients,” Loessin said. “Today’s investments from the Government of Canada in diversifying markets, exploring new uses, expanding market access and ensuring timely and predictable rail service will help the Canadian pulse industry capitalize on the increasing global demand for sustainable products while growing our economy and improving our environment.”

Helping agri-businesses develop clean technologies

The Heart of the Community Milne Fraser was one of the prime factors in Teepee Creek's early stampedes as long-term president of the association. Milne said on a trip back to Teepee, "When we started, a hay field was our arena and the road was our race track." During the war years when nails were scarce, the money to buy them and the men to pound them even scarcer, Milne Fraser and his brother Colin, with volunteer help from the whole district, built the Teepee Creek Hall in 1939. Bill White added, "We hauled logs out for the old hall - Les Hoag, Wilfred Wageman, Milne and I. We hauled logs to Jack Fitzpatrick's mill and got them squared and then hauled the rails down to the grounds. Wilfred Wageman cut them and skidded them out and put them in a pile, and we hauled them. We also hauled the rails for the old race track. I was 14 at the time." "Ed Grant worked to get this stampede going for years. I was working for him in 1941 and he sent me up to the grounds with his little truck to haul sand and gravel for the new hall. It was built by volunteer labor. We hauled all the logs out of the bush and sawed the timber right there. Milne was one of the main workers on the hall. We got the shingles from Jack LaMarr's mill and Pete Kebalo got all the shingles on the hall that fall." "Volunteer labor built the hall but dances helped pay for it" Now this iconic hall is used for not only dances but the Miss Teepee Creek Diamond Dinner's, Cowboy Christmas, Cowboy Church, Weddings, Reunions, and so much more. Over 80 years later, volunteer labor still keeps this hall operational and without our community we would not be able to preserve this special piece of Teepee Creeks History.

Cowboy Church is held at the Hall Sunday's 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

The gift of an Alberta Christmas tree Cut your own Christmas tree! The Personal Use Forest Products Permit allows Albertans to harvest trees from designated Crown land areas for free. The permit has been available for decades, under previous names such as Forest Product Tags or TM66. The permit is valid for 30 days and allows the holder to harvest up to: 3 Christmas trees 5 cubic metres (5 m3) – that is about 3 fullsized half-ton truck boxes of roundwood for building logs, fence post, poles and rails, or 5 m3 of firewood The permit can also be used to transplant up to 20 trees. ‘This is the most popular time of year for the permit,’ says Wendy Machan, information specialist with Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development. Last year, nearly 18,000 Alberta families harvested Christmas trees with the permit. Getting a Personal Use Forest Products

Permit before harvesting Crown trees is the law. The permit is only valid for personal use tree cutting, not for re-selling trees. ‘You can get a permit online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,’ says Machan. ‘This permit is an important tool for helping us keep track of the harvesting activities out in our forests. It also outlines the rules surrounding harvesting trees from Crown land and provide tips to the permit holder on how to harvest trees safely.’ Personal use tree cutting is only allowed in approved areas and is taken into account when Alberta authorizes the annual allowable cut for sustainable management of Alberta’s Crown forests. Harvesting Christmas trees in Alberta provincial parks and recreation areas is strictly prohibited and carries a large fine. The only exception is designated areas in Cypress Hills Provincial Park and the Castle parks with a valid, separate permit from Alberta Parks. ‘This year we launched a new interactive map to help Albertans know exactly where

Twas the Night Before Christmas By Clement Clarke Moore ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer, With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; “Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN! On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!

Projects receive $517,000 in BC Hydro Peace Ag grants Nineteen projects have received $517,000 in funding from the BC Hydro Peace Agricultural Compensation Fund The Northern Development Initiative Trust says grant awards are from the fifth intake of

the $20-million bi-annual fund, established in 2018 to offset the impacts of the Site C dam on farmland in the region. “We are very pleased to see such a significant number of projects approved for this intake,” said NDIT CEO Joel McKay. “The Trust applauds the diversity and ingenuity shown from the Peace Region farmers and producers as they strive for sustainability and growth. Major grant recipients include: BC Grain Producers $100,000 for the Peace Region field research project, which aims to improve the sustainability of farms in the region. The goal is to assist producers in taking risks to try new crops, varieties and practices as well as collect data to continue to adopt best management practices on their farms and encourage others to try new practices as well.

The project will assist grain producers in data collection and use information collected from multiple farms to share with others in the region. The long-term goal is to collect multiple years data and create a database for all producers to easily access unbiased research results. Venator Ranches Ltd. $50,000 for a slaughter, cut and wrap facility that will allow for an increase in the harvest of beef and bison in the Peace Region. There are currently two packing plants in the Peace running at full capacity that are limited in their ability to custom harvest for small valued added brands. The NDIT says more than $1.2 million has now been awarded to 53 projects since the ag fund was launched.
