THANK YOU FOR RECYCLING THIS NEWSPAPER.

Members choose a category and then choose a topic. They complete their projects and practice presenting those projects. Each club has a Communications Day and each member presents their projects in front of judges and the other members. The fun doesn’t stop there! Each first and second place project from all the categories carry on to the District Communications Day. This is an opportunity to put our projects against other clubs in our district. The first and second place at the District Communications Day goes on to the 4-H Regional Communications which includes clubs from all of Northern British Columbia. Communications teach many life skills like organization, completing a project on a deadline, and of course, public speaking. It’s a very important and fun part of 4-H. Until next time, — Arlee Rae Newsham, Club Reporter, Green Valley 4-H

How prepared are you for an emergency? British Columbia saw some of Canada’s most extreme weather events last year, from an early and unrelenting wildfire season, unprecedented heatwaves and devastating floods caused by aggressive storm patterns. It is more critical than ever to be prepared for an emergency by taking proactive steps.

If we can reach you, we can notify you.

The PRRD is encouraging all residents to sign up for North East BC (NEBC) alerts, a region-wide notification system exclusive to events happening in the Regional District. Used by all the electoral areas and municipalities in the PRRD, the NEBC alerts platform takes the guesswork out of emergencies; residents receive fast and accurate notifications on evacuations, severe weather, floods, landslides and more. Residents can also opt-in to receive updates about non-emergency events such as public meetings, referendums and election dates, road closures, water station and waste transfer station updates. The sign-up process is easy and only takes five minutes. To register for an account online, visit nebcalerts.com. To download the app, search for Everbridge in the Apple or Google Play stores; once downloaded, search “PRRD Alerts” in-app to add NEBC alerts into your subscription list.

If residents need assistance signing up or modifying their subscriptions, they are encouraged to contact the PRRD any time by calling 250-784-3200 or by emailing prrd.dc@prrd.bc.ca.

It is an election year; are you candidate material? The next local government election in BC is October 15, 2022. In the Peace River Regional District, voters in cities, towns and rural areas will choose who will represent them locally for the next four years. If you have ever thought about serving your community as mayor, councilor, school board trustee or electoral area director, now is the time to consider if you are candidate material. An elected official is responsible for making decisions that directly affect the daily lives of residents, families, local business owners and many others in the community. If you are considering running for local office, part of the decision-making process may include considering the impact you will have as an election official, and how best you can serve your community. A potential candidate must also understand the elections process for local office and the rules and eligibility requirements that are involved. In addition to the legislated and legal requirements of conduct for elected officials, there are foundational principles of responsible conduct that candidates should consider before running. Do you conduct your daily interactions and responsibilities with integrity, accountability, respect and with leadership and collaboration? If you are looking to make a difference in your community as an elected official, the Government of BC has a variety of online resources for potential candidates at bit.ly/3KwHl9I.

Few investments will be as important to Alberta’s future as building broadband networks that deliver fast internet speeds to rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. Broadband is an economic driver, the backbone of our modern economy. Right now, nearly 489,000 Albertans do not have access to the speeds they need to work and learn from home. While median download speeds in urban centres are 135 megabits per second, speeds in rural communities can be as low as five megabits per second. More than 200,000 households in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities have been grappling with this challenge for many years. The pandemic exposed the crisis: students doing homework in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant with free Wi-Fi. Parents trying to find room in their household budget for internet costs that far exceed the rate in urban centres. Rural businesses leaving their hometown to compete in the online economy. Alberta’s government heard these stories and so many more. With this strategy, we are taking meaningful steps to secure the lives and livelihoods in rural communities. Our broadband strategy considers Alberta’s unique opportunities and challenges to make the most of resources and technologies and connect as many homes and businesses as quickly as possible. This will help attract investment, encourage new economic development, and present a wealth of new opportunities in every industry, from healthcare and education to tourism and hospitality. It will help economic recovery and diversification reach every corner of our great province. By improving broadband in underserved communities, we are securing a bright, vibrant future for hundreds of communities, the people who call them home, and the businesses that support them. Albertans deserve better connections, and Alberta’s government is proud to make that happen.

G7: an extraordinary Agriculture ministers’ meeting

We are all appalled by and condemn the large-scale aggression by the Russian Federation against the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, enabled by the Belarusian Government. We are deeply saddened by the devastating human losses and suffering, and we express our solidarity with Ukraine in line with our G7 Leader’s Statement on the invasion of Ukraine by armed forces of the Russian Federation. We strive to provide national, bilateral and international support to help facilitate harvests in Ukraine and ensure the ability of Ukrainian farmers to feed their population and to contribute to global food security. We call on international organisations to support food production in Ukraine during this crisis and ensure food security in affected areas. We remain determined to do what is necessary to prevent and respond to a food crisis, including with humanitarian aid, and stand ready to act as needed to address potential disruptions. We are deeply concerned about the impacts on food security and the rising number of people suffering from hunger and all forms of malnutrition, caused by the unprovoked and unjustifiable Russian war of aggression, adding to the already severe situation caused by COVID-19, climate change and biodiversity loss. This will only increase the suffering in the region and put pressure on food security globally. We note with grave concern the severe effects on global food supply chains and the sharp rise of already high prices for agricultural commodities and inputs, such as fertiliser, impacting food security and nutrition for vulnerable countries and populations. We deeply condemn Russia’s attack on Ukraine. As Ministers of Agriculture, we are greatly alarmed by the targeting of critical agricultural infrastructure, including transportation and storage, which is having significant regional impacts. Given Ukraine is the fourth largest supplier of wheat and produces half of the world’s sunflower oil exports, this will additionally have global impacts on food systems and food insecurity. We commit to cooperating closely and taking concrete actions to safeguard global food security and nutrition, especially supporting food security for the people of Ukraine. We reaffirm the importance of working together to maintain the flow of food, products, seasonal labour and inputs essential for agricultural and food production across borders in line with all measures adopted in response to the current situation. Moreover, we will work together to address transportation challenges for food exports and commodity production. We call on all countries to keep their food and agricultural markets open and to guard against any unjustified restrictive measures on their exports. Any further increase in food

price levels and volatility in international markets could threaten food security and nutrition at a global scale, especially among the most vulnerable living in environments of low food security. We nevertheless recognise the extreme circumstances behind the export restrictions announced by the government of Ukraine and the vital importance of preserving the availability of food in Ukraine. We will not tolerate artificially inflated prices that could diminish the availability of food and agricultural products. We will also fight against any speculative behaviour that endangers food security or access to food for vulnerable countries or populations. Therefore, we are closely monitoring markets affecting the food system, including futures markets, to ensure full transparency. We will continue to share reliable data and information on global food market developments, especially through the relevant international organisations. We will work together to help ensure that sufficient, safe, affordable, and nutritious food continues to be available and accessible to all people, including the poorest, the most vulnerable, and displaced people in a timely, safe, and organised manner, and particularly for the people of Ukraine. We deeply thank all farmers and workers, and food and agricultural businesses along the supply chain, who continuously provide our food supply in a sustainable manner. We will continue to support food security in line with

climate and environment commitments and the sustainable development agenda. Together with G7 foreign and development ministers, we will continue our close cooperation within the G7 and with relevant international organisations, multilateral development banks and international financial institutions to respond to the impacts of the war on food security and nutrition. In this regard, we will inform one another and strive to coordinate the measures we take to ensure food security and market stability, in respect of both Ukraine and countries and regions that may experience food insecurity. We stand united with our partners and with the government and people of Ukraine during this crisis. We will continue our close cooperation to respond to the impacts of the war, including on agricultural and food trade, food security and nutrition.

Hello, this is Mackenzie Plante and Isaac Pendrak from the Kinuso Lakeside 4-H club. We are the club reporters and would love to share how our club has been doing! We have a monthly meeting that starts at 7:00 PM, although those who want to work on their record books can get there at 6:30 PM and Liam Mason (our beef leader) and Kristen Mason (our general leader) will help us with anything or answer any of our questions. Our members’ calves are all doing great and we are working on halter breaking right now. We all can’t wait to show off our work on our achievement day in June. On February 26th we hosted our club’s public speaking event at the Kinuso School. The levels were junior, intermediate, and senior. Each person got to choose from doing a speech or presentation. Our club doesn’t have any juniors though, and no intermediates were doing a speech. We also had another member that wasn’t doing a speech or a presentation to MC our event. There were a total of 6 judges, and we would like to take the chance to thank all of them for their time and positivity towards our event. Thank you: Grant Ferguson, Jennifer Churchill, Karen Duffy, Jan Crawford, Shelly Wilkinson, and Maggie Van’t Hoff. A good job to all of our winners: Intermediate presentations: Julianna Dreidger on “Animation and Moving Pictures”

Senior presentations: Noah Pendrak on “Whales” Senior speeches: Mackenzie Plante on “The Impacts of Globalization Our winners also had the chance to speak at districts, which were also hosted by our club, in Kinuso. A great job to everyone that spoke here, everyone did a great job. Thank you to all of our district judges including: Robert Buchan, Danielle Larivee, Kieran Moore, Leonard Oliver, Meghan Payne, and Amy Saitz. Also, wish our senior members luck, Mackenzie and Noah, as they both won first and are on their way to regionals on March 19th in Grimshaw. Glorious Organics is a cooperatively owned and operated farming collective. When the pandemic hit, the team worked together to be resilient and innovative. “Increasing efficiency while still offering great service is more important than ever in the time of COVID-19. Like many farmers, we’ve had to quickly adapt our business to the changing landscape within the food service industry.” The Buy BC e-commerce funding enabled them to quickly launch a webstore. “We really appreciated the ease of application for this funding, as well as the flexibility and options the funding offered. We were able to find the right online platform for our farm’s needs, and the funding support helped make the decision to commit to the project way less stressful in an uncertain time for our business. Having an online presence where we can showcase our products, share pictures and information updates, and easily manage sales online helps us respond to the new challenges of farming during a pandemic.” There are additional benefits to investing in e-commerce that stretched beyond the pandemic for these farmers. “With the new online site, we’ll be able to use our sales time more efficiently and increase ordering efficiency for our restaurant and Community

Groundbirch farming couple dreaming big No kidding – Groundbirch couple Caylee and Justin Tietjen are putting their agricultural roots to good use, with a 10-year plan for a 300-head goat farm at their homestead, ‘Hill and Hollow’. While the couple only has a handful of bottle-baby Kiko goats right now, they’ve got big plans to turn their small hobby farm into a viable farm to table operation, offering both meat and dairy. “We’re hoping to do a commercial meat farm, so this is our starting herd, as we’d like to raise Kikos,” said Caylee. “There’s quite a growing market for goats as a dairy animal, multipurpose animal, and for meat.” “Really our goal is just to be able to support ourselves, just being on the farm,” added Justin. “The challenge is starting farming, and persevering.” The two were both born into

farming families, with long histories in the South Peace, Justin on a commercial cattle ranch and Caylee on a small hobby farm. Good animal husbandry practice and ethical treatment of animals is of the utmost importance for the couple. “It’s an economic standpoint, but a moral standpoint too. You have to have this huge level of care to be a successful farmer. Or at least you should,” Caylee said. Kiko goats were developed in New Zealand, crossbreeding dairy production goats with the indigenous goats - Kiko comes from the Māori word for meat. Their hardiness, lean muscle density, and resistance to illness and infection makes them a desired breed for Northern BC, said the couple, noting the goats can even be used to hem back

wild thistle. The pair is building their farm on the principles of holistic agriculture, for example, using manure from chickens to fuel their garden, which in turn provides food for themselves and their animals. “There’s a lot of innovation in agriculture right now, there’s a lot of different ways to do things, but there’s always a need to be creative, especially small farmers” said Caylee. Caylee also understands how prohibitive costs are pushing many young people away from working on the land, but says they want to be an example, showing others how they can be commercially successful. “For a lot of people, it’s transitional farming, the

generation before you is looking to retire and you’re looking to take over the operation,” she said. “With land prices, the cost of equipment and infrastructure, and everything needed to get into farming, it’s difficult. But there does seem to be a lot of people wanting to do it, especially over COVID.” Justin works gas compression full-time, and uses the income to sustain the farm, in addition to recycling building materials and buying used farm equipment to make their dream affordable. “You have to learn to do things better, cheaper. There’s no room for waste,” he said. Tom Summer, Alaska Highway News, Local Journalism Initiative. Email Tom at tsummer@ahnfsj.ca

100% connectivity by the end of fiscal year 2026/27

The Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development, together with the Honourable Nate Glubish, Minister of Service Alberta, announced that the Government of Canada will bring its total funding commitment for connectivity in Alberta to up to $390 million. The initial estimated cost to eliminate Alberta’s digital divide was $1 billion. Recognizing the potential to do more, and given the effectiveness of the two levels of government working together, they have increased their combined funding commitment to $780 million from the combined $300 million previously announced. The governments of Canada and Alberta recognize the important role access to high-speed Internet will have in the economic recovery following the pandemic. Collaborating to provide better Internet services to Albertans living in rural, remote and Indigenous communities will help create jobs and contribute to the economic growth of the entire province. As Alberta continues to rebuild from the pandemic, both governments continue to make investments in infrastructure to build strong communities and a more competitive and resilient province—and nation—for everyone. “We need to close this connection gap and ensure that every nook and cranny of Alberta has access to reliable high-speed Internet. That’s why today’s announcement to increase funding to $780 million to connect all remaining underserved households in the province is a historic milestone for Alberta. The Government of Canada will continue to make investments like these to help connect every Canadian and achieve our national target of connecting 98% of Canadians by 2026 and 100% by 2030,” said Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development

“Alberta has made a historic funding commitment of $390 million over four years to help eliminate the digital divide. I’m so excited to have the federal government joining us as partners to match that commitment, pushing the total investment to $780 million. As we work with the private sector partners that will build this infrastructure, we know they will have significant financial contributions to make,” said Nate Glubish, Minister of Service Alberta.

Supports expanded market opportunities for the organic industry

B.Y.O.B.

The agriculture and agri-food sector is a key driver of Canada’s economy, with the organics industry being one of the fastest growing sectors in Canada.

With independent nutrition consultant BARRY YAREMCIO

Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced funding of up to $770, 000 for the Canada Organic Trade Association (COTA) to support market development for organic products.

Providing sound independent beef nutrition and management consulting services to cattle producers and the industry.

The funding will help create domestic and international export opportunities and promote the “Canada Organic” brand. The project includes the development of market activities at major food shows in Germany and the United States with additional activities related to market accessibility and technical assessments.

QUANTIFYING SILAGE LOSSES

The investment, made under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership’s AgriMarketing Program, will support the association in welcoming incoming missions, offering retailer training, creating market reports and developing a directory of organic producers and exporters. With this investment, COTA has developed a 4-module retailer training program as well as a webinar training series on how to become ‘Export Ready’. It continues to expand the training program in order to deliver sessions virtually as well as in-person to a wide stakeholder audience. In the first two years of the program COTA has trained over 600 participants from 300 companies with estimated related sales close to $1.7 million.

In the previous article, “Value of Covering Silage”, discussion focused on how uncovered silage quality is negatively impacted during the fermentation and storage periods.

The announcement supports the continued growth of Canada’s organics industry through increased access to domestic and international markets, export readiness and retailer training, and promotion of the industry to incoming missions.

Using a hypothetical situation as an example, a silage pit is a concrete bunker with straight walls. The pit holds 1,000 tons of silage. The dimensions are 50 feet wide, 110 feet long, and the silage is 12 feet deep. Silage density is 40 pounds per cubic foot (as fed). The silage is valued at $50 per ton.

“Canada’s organic industry is one of our fastest growing sectors. These producers provide healthy and nutritious food to consumers across the country and, increasingly, around the world. Supporting the market development for organic products will further contribute to the growth of a more competitive and sustainable Canadian agricultural sector.” said Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

Shrink: With a covered pit, shrink can be 5 to 8%. This reduces the amount of silage available to feed by 50 to 80 tons. If an uncovered pit has a 12% shrink, the loss is 120 tons. Top Spoilage: For ease of calculation, the top of the silage pit is flat and not rounded. Visible spoilage after fermentation is complete is 4 inches. Using the conversion of 4 inches of packed material for every inch of spoiled material; the loss of good quality silage is 16 inches. Total cubic feet of fresh silage lost is 1.33 feet (depth) x 50 feet (length) x 100 feet (long) equals 6,650 cubic feet. Multiplying 6,650 cubic feet by the density of 40 pounds per cubic foot, the loss is 133 tons.

“Canada’s organic industry is one of our fastest growing sectors. These producers provide healthy and nutritious food to consumers across the country and, increasingly, around the world. Supporting the market development for organic products will further contribute to the growth of a more competitive and sustainable Canadian agricultural sector,” said Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Value of Losses: In the covered pit, with 8% shrink, there is 920 tons silage available to feed when no spoilage is present. The uncovered pit with 12% shrink and 4 inches of top spoilage, there is 827 tons of silage available to feed. A difference of 93 tons valued at $4,650.

The Canada Organic Trade Association is a not-for-profit industry association representing the organic value chain in Canada.

If a cow is fed 60 pounds of silage per day, and there are 100 cows in the herd, the number of total feeding days available is reduced by 31 days.

Globally, the organic sector shows a worth of $147.5 billion dollars in 2018, up from the $102 billion in 2016 and is expected to continue its burgeoning growth. The Canadian organic market is now the sixth largest organic market in the world valued at $8 billion, which is up from $5.4 billion in 2017.

Preventing additional shrink and spoilage losses by covering silage piles or pits with plastic has a big impact on the amount of available feed. The economic returns are worth the investment of time and plastic. For additional information about covering silage pits and piles, contact Barry at 403-741-6032 or bjyaremcio@gmail.com.

There were more than 7,500 organic operations in Canada in 2019, accounting for roughly 2% of total agricultural land. R0011892372

Yaremcio Ag Consulting Ltd. Box 286, Stettler, AB T0C 2L0 www.beefconsultant.com (403) 741-6032 | yaremcioagconsultingltd@gmail.com

Last year, Canadian agri-food and seafood exports increased by 10.9%, reaching $82.2 billion -- over $7 billion ahead of our target of $75 billion, and four years ahead of schedule.

3. SELECT ONE MAIN IMAGE for your design, and make sure that it ties in with the ad’s overall message. 4. OPTIMIZE YOUR COPY. Choose the right words to clearly communicate why the product or service you’re selling is exactly what your audience needs. 5. EMBRACE WHITE SPACE. Don’t let superfluous clutter distract your audience from the key points in your ad. 6. LIMIT YOUR OFFERS TO TWO. Less is more when it comes to advertising. Including too much information will only confuse your audience. 7. MAKE YOUR AD VISUALLY APPEALING by grouping similar elements together, limiting the number of typefaces you use and choosing colours wisely. 8. STAND OUT WITH COLOUR. A full-colour ad on an otherwise black-andwhite page is sure to draw the eye, and the opposite — monochromatic in a sea of colour — is equally true. 9. ALWAYS INCLUDE A CALL TO ACTION. ‘Stronger, faster, bigger’: Streeper continues to thrive Dave Lueneberg Sports Reporter If you know Fort Nelson’s Blayne Streeper, you also know the long-time dog musher prefers to be called Buddy. “You say Buddy at the golf course, and they know exactly who you’re talking about. Unless you’re issuing me a speeding ticket, then it’s Blayne,” jokes the 40-year-old, who just won his ninth Fur Rendezvous title Feb. 27 through the streets and forested trails of Anchorage, Alaska. Streeper loves the adrenaline that sled dog racing brings, and it shows when you ask him to describe his passion. Born and raised around the Mile 304 area, the married father of two, competed in his first Fur Rondy 22 years ago. Four years later, in 2004, he took his first title. The Fur Rondy, or just Rondy, an abbreviation for Anchorage’s Fur Rendezvous, is considered one of two major races on the annual dog sled racing’s short circuit in Alaska. “The sprint-mushing racing, which I compete in, is basically the origin of the sport,” Streeper explains, outlining the difference between short-circuit and the longer, endurance racing. “We want to be stronger, faster, bigger. That’s

the kind I like to do, speed racing.” While the world-famous Iditarod sled dog race sees mushers and their teams travel 938 miles over eight-plus days from Anchorage to Nome in Alaska’s backcountry, events like the Rondy are held close to or within city limits over three days at much shorter distances. Streeper compares the two disciplines as a 100-metre dash at the Olympics to the Boston Marathon. “Typically, a sprint race is between 20 and 35 miles (per day) and the that’s the type of distance that a dog can run hard and fast,” says Streeper. “Anything over that and you really have to pace the team.” “I have family that have been around chuck wagons for years. If you sat around a campfire and substituted the word horse for dog, you would have thought you were at a chuck wagon race,” says Streeper. “We talk about things like track conditions, foot care, nutrition, training, leaders, wheel dogs… how they come down the back stretch.” And, just like the thoroughbred industry, there’s also been advances in the type of dogs that are used – not the traditional breeds you might expect. “It’s an evolving breed, a racing sled dog,” Streeper describes. “You would think Siberian Husky, but that’s as far-fetched from the truth

as it can be. These dogs are built for speed. More of a greyhound (appearance) but no greyhound influence in them. They have a long back and are long-legged.” Known as the Alaskan Husky-cross, he says they have many different influences from many different bloodlines. Unlike a chuck wagon or horse race at the track, though, where you might see a photo finish, narrow city streets and the speed of these teams dictate that starts be ‘staggered’ two minutes apart to avoid a collision between competitors. The best overall course time is then declared the winner. “It’s exciting!” Streeper will continue the excitement when he takes part in the Open North American event in Fairbanks, the other big short-circuit event of the season, from March 18 to 20.

36th Peace Country Classic a complete and udder hit! The 36th Foster’s Peace Country Classic Agri-Show is in the books and it has been called a success by Evergreen Park General Manager Dan Gorman. “We had good crowds Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,” Gorman said. “It was great to have restrictions lifted and be able to see all the smiling faces throughout the Show.” This was the first year the Show, held March 9-12, went to a Wednesday to Friday format for exhibitors in and around the TARA Centre. There were no exhibitor displays or craft show and sale on Saturday. The Keddie’s Horse Program ran Thursday to Saturday and the Country Junction Feeds Youth Livestock Program was held on Saturday. The S3 Boardshop Skijoring was held on Friday.

Redesigned. Restyled. Redesigned. Restyled. Ready for what’s what’s next. Ready for next. Redesigned. Restyled. Ready for what’s next.

Gorman said changing the format up did cause some confusion. “Because the complete Show, exhibitors included, had historically included a full slate of events on the Saturday we did have people showing up expecting the same this year. We promoted the change through media buys and on our social media, but not everyone got that information. “We sincerely apologize to anyone who came on Saturday expecting the exhibitors and trade show in and around the TARA Centre to be open.” Gorman said the Agri-Show board will discuss the potential of moving the Show back to its original format of three days - including exhibitor displays and trade show - Thursday to Saturday.

Wanting guidance on path towards reducing emissions associated with fertilizer

Rodeo Season Kick Off On March 12th, Teepee Creek kicked off the rodeo season with a WRA Rodeo in the Lyons Production Services Events Centre. To say it was a hit, would be a huge understatement. The building was filled with cheering spectators, the livestock was rank & the competitors were fierce! To end the day of rodeo, the crowd headed to the Teepee Creek Hall where the Steak dinner was definitely something to salivate over. We have to send a huge Thank You out to Lefty's Cafe, they know how to prepare a feast after a long day of competition. Once belly's were full & everyone stopped by the "watering hole", Trickshot hit the stage, and let me tell you what, they know how to get the folks on the dance floor. From dusk till almost dawn, the two steppin' never came to a halt. The event went off without a hitch. A huge Thank You goes out to the Teepee Creek Stampede Directors & Volunteers who put this all together in such a short time frame. This community is nothing short of amazing when it comes to pulling together & making sure everyone has a fantastic time. Be sure to keep a lookout for our future events, you will not want to miss out on the next one!

Canadian farmers have shown that they are good stewards of the land and have long cared for the environment. They are key players in building a healthy environment and a more sustainable agriculture sector in Canada. Today, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau launched a new round of consultations, beginning with the release of a Discussion Document. These consultations will focus on how we can achieve Canada’s national target to reduce absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with fertilizers by 30% below 2020 levels by 2030. The Document is a key part of consultations with industry to help reach this goal. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) met with producer groups and provincial and territorial partners in 2021 to discuss the emissions reduction target and initiate conversations on how to work together to develop a realistic approach. Stakeholders identified important opportunities and challenges for industry which helped inform a Discussion Document that will stimulate discussion and lead to a shared understanding of how Canada can reach its 30% fertilizer emissions reduction target. The

Discussion Document is now available for comment until June 3, 2022. Fertilizers play a major role in the agriculture sector’s success and have contributed to record harvests in the last decade. They have helped drive increases in Canadian crop yields, grain sales, and exports. However, nitrous oxide emissions, particularly those associated with synthetic nitrogen fertilizer use have also grown significantly. That is why the Government of Canada has set the national fertilizer emissions reduction target, which is part of the commitment to reduce total GHG emissions in Canada by 40-45% by 2030, as outlined in Canada’s Strengthened Climate Plan, and enshrined in legislation through the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act. The Government is focused on meeting this emissions reduction target through a range of policy measures and approaches, such as working with farmers to encourage broader adoption of new products and implementation of beneficial management practices, resulting in both economic benefits for farmers and environmental benefits for society.

a path towards reducing emissions associated with fertilizer

from previous -

An important aspect of Canada’s path toward reaching the target while not compromising crop yields will require ongoing support from industry stakeholders. Industry-led initiatives like Fertilizer Canada’s 4R Nutrient Stewardship program will also play an important role in promoting sustainable use of fertilizer in crop production and can reduce GHG emissions. The Government of Canada has already made major investments in new programs to help farmers adopt new beneficial management practices and clean technology which can improve productivity and lower GHG emissions, including through the Agriculture Climate Solutions – Living Labs initiative, the On-Farm Climate Action Fund, and the investments delivered through these programs are designed to leverage existing practices and technologies in order to meet Canada’s total greenhouse gas emissions reduction target. In the coming months, AAFC will be hosting virtual discussions for participants in Canada to continue the conversation on the emission reduction target. AAFC will consult with Canadians, including producers, processors, Indigenous communities, women in agriculture, youth, environmental organizations, small and emerging sectors and other stakeholders and partners to develop a path forward. Working together is vital to identifying solutions to address the serious environmental challenges at hand. Reducing emissions associated with fertilizer can help contribute to meeting and exceeding Canada’s 2030 GHG emissions reduction target and achieving netzero by 2050. “Our vision for sustainable agriculture in Canada aligns with the work of producers who are passionate about the health of their land and animals. We are continuing to support the development and adoption of practices and equipment that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the sector’s climate change resiliency. With the experience of fertilizer industry representatives, farmers and other pertinent groups, we can work together to identify concrete and innovative steps to help meet our targets,” said Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Reducing nitrous oxide emissions associated with synthetic nitrogen fertilizer use is necessary to contribute to meeting and exceeding Canada’s 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target and achieving netzero by 2050. This voluntary reduction target will help position the agriculture sector for the future. The agriculture sector has generated approximately 10% of Canada’s total GHG emissions annually since 1990. In the past year, the Government of Canada has announced $550-million over 10 years to help Canada’s agriculture and agri-food sector meet its emission targets and capture new opportunities in the green economy. Through the Agricultural Climate Solutions initiative, the Government of Canada is investing $200 million under the On-Farm Climate Action Fund to stimulate the immediate adoption of beneficial management practices that sequester carbon and reduce greenhouse gas emissions directly on farms. On February 22, 2022, the Government of Canada announced 12 projects under the On-Farm Climate Action Fund. Through individual application intakes, these 12 recipient organizations will redistribute funding to help farmers adopt and implement beneficial management practices, including nitrogen management.

Remembering Christmas in July, looking forward to this year The Motorcycle Mondays Committee of the Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grande Prairie and Region. (http://bbbsgp.com/ index.html) To host Christmas in July. The day was filled with food and laughter! It started out with Kevin O’Toole, deputy Mayor for the City of Grande Prairie making a proclamation that July 24th, 2021 was officially Christmas in July. Scotty Cartwright from Fight for Hope and Scotty’s Burger Shack was on the microphone and bull horn. There wasn’t a person within ear

shot who couldn’t stop laughing. The man is a hoot! Santa, AKA Dan Wardrop came to town with his 7 seater trike. The kids got to have their photo taken with him all day long! Dan thrives on being around the kids and their parents. He loves the way big and little kids alike have their faces light up when they get to sit on it. We had a show ‘n’ shine, a vendors alley, a scavenger hunt, games for kids and families in Macklin Field and we partnered with Safety City and the kids decorated their bikes and trikes and skateboards! Kevin Lavallee from Brandt Tractor gave up his entire day to man the BBQ cooking over 600 burgers. The Fry Truck was on hand and did a brisk business too. There were so many amazing partners and sponsors that made this day possible that we even made a shirt to thank them all! grateful for this day. All of their fundraisers had been canceled by COVID restrictions and so the close to $7,000 that was raised by donations from the gate, burger sales, from the scavenger hunt and the vendor booths made a big impact in what their organization could do for the kids of our community. It is truly amazing what happens when a community comes together to help our kids. That said, tentatively July 16th, 2022 will be our second annual Christmas in July event and we invite you out to spend some time visiting and letting the kids have some fun! Country crooner is Mile Zero bound personal setting as opposed to the major market venues and colossal crowds he typically draws.

Multi-Platinum, an award winning artist announced his 2022 Canadian tour complete with a Dawson Creek stop, Love Someone: An Intimate Evening with Johnny Reid. The national tour kicks off on February 10 in London, ON at Centennial Hall and is set to be one of the longest running artist tours in Canadian history with over one hundred shows once all tour dates are announced. Boasting a stripped-down set and stops in smaller communities that rarely get to see an artist of Reid’s calibre during a national tour, Reid is making it his mission to connect directly with fans across the country. Love Someone is Reid’s 11th studio album and was released on October 15 via Universal Music Canada. A return to his country roots, the album marks his most inspired collection of songs to date. Complementing the album’s inherent intimacy, the tour will give fans a rare chance to hear Reid live in a highly up close and

The past ten years has seen Reid perform to over 1 million people; on this tour, fans can expect an uplifting evening of songs and storytelling with the chart-topping, singer-songwriter. With an incredible 1.5 million albums sold, Reid is a critically acclaimed singer widely known for his lyrical honesty and musical capability, as demonstrated by an extensive catalogue of hit songs and Platinum selling albums. His illustrious career has also garnered him 26 Canadian Country Music Awards, 6 JUNO Awards and multiple sold-out national arena tours. Reid is also a recipient of the Slaight Music Humanitarian Award and the SOCAN National Achievement Award. His songwriting connects with audiences of all ages from across the globe, inspiring fans with his unique ability to uncover beauty behind life’s ebb and flow. “The pandemic has taught me a lot about the value of time. I’ve given a lot of thought about how and where I want to spend my time. I’m really excited to bring this tour to as many places as possible. I can’t wait to reconnect with all of the people that have supported me all of these years in a more intimate concert experience,” said Reid.

New cropping alternatives 2022 now available

“Cropping Alternatives crop budgets are soil zone specific and cover a variety of dryland and irrigation crops,” explains Manglai, production crops economist at Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development (AFRED). “Estimated costs for the 2022 growing season are included, but they can be modified to better represent production, prices and costs specific to a farming operation.” The updated budgets are designed to assist grain, oilseed and pulse crop producers make better crop planning decisions by using information from their own farms and soil type. Manglai adds that these updates support the commitment of AFRED to the crops industry by providing decision tools that address both profit and risk management.
