It was a sunny, yet windy Saturday afternoon when the Queen’s jet arrived at the Dawson Creek airport.
“Otto Hoffstrom, the owner of a sawmill, was crossing the river with his four daughters,” opened Rev. Christopher Samsom in explaining its“Whenroots. coming off the ferry, he put the car into reverse instead of forward when he got to the other side of the river. The vehicle landed in the “Whilewater.”he was able to swim to safety, his daughters were not.” Lost were Lillian, Agnes, Florence, and Olga. During a deep period of grief, Rev. Samsom said Hoffstrom turned to God in prayer.
“In thanksgiving for his daughters’ lives, and as a mark of what that time meant for him, he donated the wood and $500 to build the church you see here today.”

It was a milestone quietly celebrated by its parishioners, but one rarely seen in today’s world.Taylor’s Church of the Good Shepherd commemorated its 90th anniversary on Aug. 28, the exact day in 1932 that it opened its doors for the first time.
The building of the church, though, comes with a story and one born from tragedy.
The structure took all of 18 days to build and other than the addition of a basement and indoor plumbing, it’s remained true to its history.“Itwas consecrated on Aug. 28, 1932, by Bishop George Rix of Caledonia. Alan and his wife, Lorraine, and their four children, Robin, Reanne, Riley and Ross, run the ranch’s cattle operation. One hundred years after Walter and Cristiana’s arrival, the Sanford family has expanded to include
Jim Jr. and his wife, Annice, had three children, Bill, Joan and Alan, who all grew up on the property and attended nearby Bouchie Lake School. The ranch continued to grow as well. Hereford cattle replaced the dairy cows that occupied the valley in the early years. Eventually, other cattle breeds, such as Simmental, were introduced in the 1980s, followed byToday,Angus.

The legacy of Nine Mile Ranch began in the early 1920s when Walter Sanford, a druggist from London, England, and his wife, Cristiana, an opera singer, arrived in Canada. When visiting their son, Jim, and daughter, Ivy, in Bouchie Lake in August 1922, the Sanfords bought the property that would become Nine Mile Ranch.
Jim and his wife, Wyn, took over operating the ranch in the 1930s. The land at that time was bush, and Jim and his son, Jim Jr., worked tirelessly to clear the land and create pasture and fields. In 1937, they logged behind the home and peeled enough logs in one day to build the landmark hiproof barn that adorned the ranch for many decades. Unfortunately, the roof was destroyed during a windstorm in 2020, changing the view along the road where the original home once stood.
“Beef cattle have become not only our passion, but our way of life, and we have taken great pride in producing quality cattle and beef for sale in our local community,” said Reanne Sanford. “After 100 years, there is a lot to be grateful for, and we are certainly thankful for the opportunity to farm this land that has provided for generations of this family.”
The Century Farm Awards honour pioneers whose farms, ranches or agricultural organizations have been active in B.C. for 100 years or more. Each award celebrates the rich heritage of farming and ranching in British Columbia. The Century Farm Award program was created in 1994, which was the Ministry of Agriculture’s centennial.
A family ranch known for its landmark barn is being recognized with a Century Farm Award for its contributions to the Cariboo region and the B.C. farming community.“Ourprovince’s agricultural sector was built by pioneer farmers who purchased land and started producing food for their communities,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “In the Cariboo, the Sanford family has been doing just that for a century at Nine Mile Ranch, nine miles northwest of Quesnel. Their commitment to family and community is a reason to celebrate. Congratulations, Sanford family, on your Century Farm Award!”

Your horse comes to you. You don’t have to “catch” him.
He stands quietly for saddling and willingly picks up his feet for cleaning and trimming.
Being able to read horses is one of the greatest skills a horseman can have. It tells you what approach you need to take and helps you resolve problems quickly. Stage 1 is where ‘horse savvy’ begins, creating a positive balance of trust and respect, eliminating many common problems and safety issues.
He is easy to control. You don’t have to use a bit to force him to stop or slow down.
A few highlights of what is covered in Stage 1:
learn to play the 7 patterns horses play with one another, break down the preypredator barrier, create a language with which to communicate with your horse and teach your horse on the ground the things you want him to understand when you are on his back.
Build respectful confidence in your horse –taking out the spook.
Catching your horse, using approach and retreat and not having to “hide” the halter
All the cornerstones for moving your horse online at a distance of 12 feet – building blocks for liberty, trailer loading, sending over and onto objects, into small spaces.

The Livestock Tax Deferral provision allows livestock
Canadian farmers are directly impacted by climate change and its effects can be detrimental to sustaining operations. To provide assurance for producers as they make difficult herd management decisions, today the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced an initial list of designated regions in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba where Livestock Tax Deferral has been authorized for 2022 due to extreme weather conditions.
to the Livestock Tax Deferral provision, producers have access to a comprehensive suite of Business Risk Management (BRM) programs to help them manage significant risks that threaten the viability of their farm and are beyond their capacity to manage. BRM programs are often the first line of support for producers facing disasters and farmers are encouraged to make use of these programs to protect their farming operations.
Tax Deferral includes forage shortfalls of 50% or more caused by drought or excess moisture. The Government of Canada will continue to monitor conditions across the country to determine whether the addition of other regions throughout the year are required.Inaddition
producers who are forced to sell a significant amount of their breeding herd due to drought or flooding to defer a portion of their income from sales until the following tax year. The income may be at least partially offset by the cost of reacquiring breeding animals, thereby reducing the potential tax burden associated with the original sale.

To enhance economic sustainability, Ministers agreed to improve BRM programs, including raising the AgriStability compensation rate from 70% to 80%, and implementing new measures to make the programs more timely, equitable, easy to understand, and better protect producers against climate risk.

In collaboration with the City of Fort St John and the District of Taylor, the PRRD has issued a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEOI) in order to identify lands that could be acquired as a site for a potential future recreation facility. This step has come after the Committee completed extensive community engagement throughout the North Peace region earlier this year. Sites will be considered within the City of Fort St. John, District of Taylor and Area B and C in the PRRD, and evaluated by the Committee and the Regional Board. The submission deadline for proposals is September 22, 2022.

On August 27 of this year, the community once again gathered for a workbee BBQ to maintain its status as a FireSmart community. The event saw cabin owners reducing their wildfire risk by removing forest fuels and turning them into firewood and wood chips for gardens.
