It’s time once again for 4-H members to choose their projects.
Some will opt to search their own herds, while others will visit neighbouring farms and ranches. One thing rings true no matter where the animal comes from. 4-H members are looking for a few key factors when selecting an animal.
When 4-H members are choosing a Market Steer, they are looking for an animal with the following:
The steer should have width of loin over his top, A wide and expressive rump Should have muscle definition throughout his shoulder, lower quarter, and stifle. This refers to the relationship of body length to body depth and body width.
Steers should have visible depth of body/flank and spring of rib. These factors will affect the Rate of Gain an animal makes
throughout the 4-H year. This impacts the final weigh in of the animal at Achievement Day.
When hunting for a heifer, the member will be looking for a few different traits.
Heifers should be selected on structural soundness, be in good health and have good growth potential. Genetics can play a huge part in the selection process as well.
If a calf had a good, correct and sound mother, many times the offspring are the same.
The beginning of a new 4-H season is very exciting. New projects mean new adventures and learning new skills. This is the very foundation of 4-H.
Until Next Time, Arlee Newsham, Reporter Green Valley 4-H Club

Hello readers I am back. My name is Jessica Wiebe. I am the Prespatou club reporter.
It feels like we just had our achievement days a week ago and now we’re starting on a new year. I just can’t believe it.
We had our first official meeting on October 27. We have a couple new changes this year in our club. Some of our last year’s members have graduated out of the program and a couple are taking a break for a year. We also have 2 brand new members coming in to the program this year and one that is returning after a break. Our club has something really exciting to share with you guys. We are adding another addition to our club. Our club has dog projects that are entering this year; which is really exciting because we have never had a dog project in the 21 years that the Prespatou 4-H community club has existed.
Prespatou club consists of 6 members enrolling this year; 4 Sr members and 2 Jr members.
There are 3 sheep members. The sheep projects we will be showing are 3 market projects
and one ewe project and one ewe with lamb project. There will be 2 beef members; one a steer project and the other one a heifer project and 2 dog members. They will be starting with beginning unit. Our club leader is Kathleen Wiebe. She is the A leader, sheep leader beef leader and dog leader, but she has screened volunteers helping in each area.
For the beef members the deadline for beef weigh in is November 15. We are planning to have our beef weigh in on November 12. Happy start of the new 4-H year I hope you are all excited as I am.
Until next time!

Nearly $1 million invested in dairy
B.Y.O.B.
With independent nutrition consultant BARRY YAREMCIO
INCLUDING KOCHIA IN CATTLE RATIONS
With an investment of nearly $1 million from the Government of Canada, the Association des médecins vétérinaires praticiens du Québec will be able to develop a digital tool to anticipate and reduce the risks associated with metabolic diseases in dairy cows.
The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, made the announcement today about this contribution from the Canadian Agricultural Strategic Priorities Program.
Metabolic diseases are a major health concern for dairy cows, especially during the post-calving period. This investment will enable the Association to develop algorithms that will help predict risks during lactation based on blood metabolites obtained before calving. The tool and the results will be made available online for dairy producers and veterinarians. By being better equipped to understand and anticipate risks, they will be able to quickly target corrective actions that improve animal health and welfare.
The tool will help producers to work more efficiently and reduce economic losses due to disease for both producers and processors. Further, it will help improve intervention capacity for veterinarians and strengthen working relationships between producers and processors.
Innovation in Canadian agriculture has led to technological improvements that help the dairy industry grow and remain competitive. The Government of Canada continues to make strategic investments in innovative solutions to encourage stakeholders to share knowledge, mitigate risks and further strengthen the agriculture sector as a key driver of economic growth.
“The Association des médecins vétérinaires praticiens du Québec is very pleased with the assistance received from AAFC. With this investment, an algorithm will be developed to primarily target dairy cows in the critical pre-calving period. Artificial intelligence will be used to analyze risks during the production cycle. The research will have a huge impact on the day-to-day management of good husbandry practices. In addition, animal health and welfare will be put front and centre with the use of this new technology,” said Dr. Jean-Yves Perreault, President of the Association des médecins vétérinaires praticiens du Québec
The funding of up to $998,456 announced today is provided through the Canadian Agricultural Strategic Priorities Program (CASPP), which is a $50.3-million, five-year investment to help the agricultural sector adapt and remain competitive.
ochia ochia scoparia L is a salt tolerant annual weed that grows well in road sides, around sloughs, and in cropland
Reported yields are up to e tonnes per acre When at the early bloom stage, nutritional alue is similar to a high uality alfalfa grass hay s the plant matures, uality declines and the accumulation of anti-nutritional compounds increase This also occurs during periods of drought Cattle are willing to eat kochia, but there are limitations to how much can be included in a beef ration
Feed test results ha e shown that sodium salt can be as high as 1 salt which is well abo e the daily re uirement of sodium salt When sodium re uirements are met by the forage that is consumed animals are less inclined to eat a mineral product free choice This can result in de ciencies of minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium along with trace minerals and itamins
Sulfur can be high especially when the kochia was har ested around sloughs that ha e a salt ring These areas can be high in sulfur and magnesium When a ration exceeds sulfur the occurrence of polio encephalomalacia or polio can occur
Nitrate accumulations can be high during of the growing season Testing for nitrates should be done on forages that contain kochia There are cases where animal deaths are attributed to high nitrate le els Saponins are a bitter substance that are present in kochia They can reduce feed intake When it is consumed, this molecule is broken down into glycosides s it is digested, glycosides create foam that is stabile in the rumen, thus contributing to bloat
Oxalates are also found in kochia Oxalate le els increase as the plant matures This compound impairs the absorption of calcium It remains stable in cut hay or in silage dditional calcium supplementation should be considered
With all these possible limitations, kochia cannot be fed as the sole ingredient in a ration or consumed on pasture It is recommended that the kochia not exceed - of the ration on a dry matter DM basis Slowly introduce kochia into the ration Step up the amount o er increments to get to the re uired feeding le el

What are profitable farms doing?
What do profitable farms do? This is one of the questions the Canadian Cow-Calf Cost of Production Network (COP Network) tries to answer by benchmarking cow-calf production systems across Canada.
Based on data from these benchmark farms for the 2021 production year, it is observed that the higher profit farms within the Network tend to have more cows, smaller cows and lower costs per cow.
If you want to participate in the Canadian Cow-Calf Cost of Production Network in Alberta, contact ML Manglai at 780-422-4056

“The Agricultural Society Innovation Award recognizes agricultural societies for their innovation, resilience and commitment to their communities,” says Susan Lacombe, program coordinatorwith the Alberta government. “This award allows us to work together to champion and celebrate the significant contributions that agricultural societies make, while inspiring others to take action.”
The program recognized 2 agricultural societies in 2021, which made tremendous impacts on their communities – the Calmar and District Agricultural Society and the Rocky Mountain House Agricultural Society.
The Calmar and District Agricultural Society and curling club were gifted a piece of land to farm. Using donated materials, machinery, seed, fertilizer, crop insurance and a host of volunteers, profits from the harvest were distributed to the curling club and other Leduc County charities and organizations. This had a tremendous impact on the local community.
The Rocky Mountain House Agricultural Society was recognized for developing a series of agriculture education videos for grade 4 students. These videos featured local farms and producers covering a wide range of topics from farm safety, equine safety and dairy, beef and sheep production, to information on
4-H steers. These videos are also available to the public, and can be incorporated into future in-person educational programming.
A selection panel made up of individuals representing agricultural societies will evaluate the 2022 applications based on a ranking system that includes
creativity, community impact, challenge overcome and overall impression.
“Up to 3 agricultural societies will be recognized at the upcoming Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies annual convention on February 3, 2023. Innovations should be something that is new to the agricultural society, and demonstrate how the society continued to positively impact community engagement, recovery and reopening during the last year.”
The winners will each receive a banner suitable for display in their area or community hall to mark this achievement, along with a formal certificate of recognition. Applications for the 2022 award are now available. The deadline to apply is November 30, 2022.
“Agricultural societies matter and this is one small way for us to say thank you for the critical work they do in building a stronger Alberta,” says Lacombe.
Connect with Susan Lacombe for more information, 780-968-6557.

BY STEPH PARTH, Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic
The equine foot is an incredible structure. It withstands heavy loads, temperature changes, concussive forces and moisture. The fact that it is the equivalent of the human middle nger in anatomy is impressive enough, let alone its ability to bear the hefty load of a horse. It is no surprise that anything causing pain in the foot of a horse can lead to serious consequences. One such insult is laminitis, otherwise known as ‘founder’. Laminitis is a complex and multifactorial disease of the equine foot. Broadly, the term refers to in ammation of the lamellae, which are that nger-like projections that interdigitate the co n bone (third phalanx) and the hoof wall. Without these immensely strong lamellae, the co n bone would not be suspended in the hoof wall and the horse could not bear weight. Laminitis is technically a syndrome and there are many presentations that can make diagnosis and treatment di cult. Some horses present for a sudden onset (acute) episode of pain, while others have subclinical (no outward signs) of laminitis over a long period of time (chronic) with intermittent episodes. If laminitis is bad enough, the lamellae can become damaged, and the co n bone is no longer supported in the foot leading to downwards rotation or ‘sinking’ of the bone in the foot. If rotation is bad enough, the tip of the co n bone can poke through the sole of the foot. Once this is observed, the prognosis is grave and very little can be done to treat the horse.
There are many factors that are thought to cause or predispose a horse to laminitis. Among them are overfeeding of grain or high carbohydrate diets, excessive use of corticosteroids, excessive concussion of the feet on hard surfaces, supporting limb laminitis (when one foot supports more weight due to an injury on the opposite limb), anything causing in ammation, fever
or toxemia (diarrhea, proximal enteritis, metritis, retained palcenta, etc), metabolic disease (Equine metabolic syndrome, Cushing’s disease) and black walnut ingestion, which can be found in certain shavings. It can sometimes be di cult to diagnose laminitis. A ected horses generally assume a ‘saw-horse’ stance in which the front feet are held in front of the horse’s body in an attempt to shift weight to their hind feet as these are less often painful. Interestingly, a negative hoof tester exam does not rule out foot pain or laminitis as this depends on the horse’s hoof and sole thickness. Nerve blocks (a technique in which local freezing is deposited next to nerves supplying feeling to the foot and blocking sensation of structures below the deposition of the freezing) can be helpful to localize the pain to the front part of the foot. Radiographs (X-Rays) are needed to determine if the co n bone has rotated in order to determine prognosis and assist podiatry. Venograms can be performed to assess the vascularity of the foot, though this is a specialized diagnostic that must be performed in the referral equine practice setting. Diagnosis is ultimately made by collecting a thorough history, completing a physical exam and ruling out other causes of lameness.
Because it is a complex syndrome, laminitis can be di cult to treat. Many treatments have come and gone out of style, and there is no one speci c treatment. Addressing and treating the main cause for laminitis is important, which can encompass a plethora of medical options. NSAIDS (Nonsteroidal anti-in ammatories) such as Phenylbutazone (‘bute’) or unixin meglumine (‘banamine’) can be used for pain control. Addition of Tylenol may be a reasonable option as well, but ask your veterinarian for a safe dosage prior to administration. Soft bedding such as sand and soft soled boots can help alleviate some pain. Lastly, prevention is key, and a horse with
known triggers for laminitic are ups should be well managed to prevent episodes and worsening damage to the foot structures. Working closely with your farrier is very important in cases of laminitis. X-Rays to determine sole depth can be very helpful to help guide trimming, and frequent trimming and shoeing may be required to aid in management of your horse’s laminitis. The team of vets at Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic are happy to work with your farrier in partnership to alleviate the pain and lameness that accompanies laminitis. If you suspect your horse is su ering from laminitis, you should schedule an exam with your veterinarian. Early intervention and reduction of triggers results in fewer episodes of in ammation, reducing the amount of damage to the foot and increases the quality of life of your equine partner.

Front Row Seating - a 10 Day Set
February 20, 2023 - March 3, 2023
Front Row Seating is the opportunity to learn first-hand, in a private setting directly from Glenn Stewart as he works a variety of horses at various stages through his Horse Development Program. He could be working with colts or putting the finishing touches on his top-level horses –his Dream Team.
This is a unique opportunity –you will be able to watch and learn as Glenn is working and sharing with you what is happening in real-time. You will see his Stages program in action and how a variety of horses – at different levels of training – learn under his clear, consistent guidance.
Front Row Seating is an awesome interactive learning opportunity unlike any other I have experienced.
I have done camps, clinics, and auditing before, but front row seating has been my favourite
educational experience to date, the opportunity to watch Glenn in his element, with colts, and with his own horses. In a very relaxed and enjoyable setting Glenn brings the stages to life and is able to show how they come together from start to finish. Which comes in handy when you have your own horse there working on the stages, you can see and do, and get guidance from Glenn,” says Blair Dyck, Hanley, Saskatchewan –Front Row Seating participant, 2019
You will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the day – getting the answers you need to improve your horsemanship directly from Glenn. Alberta and U.S. cattle price spreads
“The week ending October 14, 2022 saw minimal buyer bidding on live fed steers in Alberta,” says Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with Agriculture and Irrigation. “A weekly price trend was not available. The prior week did see a modest increase of $.24/cwt on fed steers in comparison to Nebraska’s increase of $Cdn2.75/cwt. The price spread between the 2 markets was $20.59/cwt under.”
The 5-year average prices of these 2 price series shows a closer alignment. The spot basis (difference between the cash price and the nearby futures price) is estimated to be $18.50/cwt under. The same week in 2021 reported a spot basis of approximately $2/ cwt over. Why the deviation? Is the Alberta cattle market out of sync with the U.S. market?
“There are a number of factors influencing recent cattle markets, starting with narrowing packer margins,” says Boyda. “Packer margins are closer to average versus the higher levels of the recent year. Demand is keeping throughput moving but last week there were insufficient bids to register a trend in fed steer prices. Listings are now into November.”
Tighter supplies in the U.S. are putting U.S. packers in the red. HedgersEdge.com reported beef packers losses of $US14.35/head on October 11, 2022, down from earnings of $US18.40/head the week before.
“The U.S. is keeping cattle processing current but this may not be the case in Alberta. Commercial red meat production for the U.S. totaled 4.83 billion pounds in August, up 5% from
August 2021. Cattle slaughter totaled 3.08 million head, up 7% from August 2021.”
The average live weight was down 6 pounds from the previous year. U.S. packers are processing cattle at a greater pace than that of the last 2 years. In comparison, according to data from the Canadian Beef Grading Agency, Alberta steer carcass weights have increased to 953 pounds in September 2022, approximately 20 pounds higher than September 2021. Heavier weights and longer delivery schedules suggest that the Alberta processing is still not current.
“The weaker basis levels may encourage holding feeders longer; however rising costs of gain need to be considered. Barley prices have risen every week since the last week in August 2022, from $359.50 to $431.50/tonne based in Lethbridge.”
The pull for cattle is not as strong as earlier in the year, notes Boyda. Weekly slaughter for the West Region on the week of October 8, 2022 was 49,234 head, 8.9% lower than the same week in 2021, but equivalent in terms of year-to-date over 2021. The Canadian Beef Grading Agency reported the first quarter slaughter volume of 2022 as 5.5% higher than that of the same period in 2021. By the third quarter of 2022, slaughter volumes were 4.8% lower than the same quarter in 2021.
Finally, Alberta beef exports to key markets slipped in August 2022. Beef (fresh, frozen or chilled, including offal) export volume in August was 32.2 tonnes, 9.9% lower than the previous month and 16.8% lower than August 2021.
The value of beef exports in August 2022 was $286.1 million, a drop of 9.2% from July 2022 and a decrease of 24% over August 2021. 2022 started strong but the key markets of U.S. and Japan saw a decline in August. Although Canada remains the top beef supplier to the U.S., Brazil and Mexico have made inroads and U.S. beef imports increased by 8.6% over 2022.

Di erences in annual forages values and macronutrient
Pulse/Cereal interseeding
Annual pulse additions to cereal forages is bene cial because a) their nitrogen xing properties allow them to increase the pool of nitrogen available for their cereal companions b) help in reducing presence of weeds through smothering and competition and c) may rely on the cereal upstanding physiology to wrap their vines upward towards the canopy and absorb sunlight. As a results, less fertilizer and herbicide is required for maintenance and greater soil quality could be achieved due to root penetration and diversity. Across all treatments, greater number of emergent stands (Figure 1) were found in plots sown as monocrops to cereals compared to mixes. CDC Austenson as a monocrop produced 75% more emergent individuals per acre than intersown with AAC Aberdeen, DL Tesoro, DL Taza combined (P=0.0009). Indeed, mixes of AAC Aberdeen, DL Tesoro and DL Delicious had 32, 24 and 20% a smaller number of individuals than CDC Austenson alone (P<0.0001). Comparing emergence between CDC Baler oat and intercrops of CDC Baler oat with yellow, forage pea and faba bean, mixes overall comprised 40% of the value of emergent seedlings found in CDC Baler as a monocrop (P<0.0001). Individually, CDC Baler intersown with AAC Aberdeen, DL Tesoro and DL Delicious had 43, 38 and 40% less emergence than CDC Baler monocrop. A similar response was found in Taza triticale, were emergent seedlings in all mixes comprised 41% compared to the total number of emergent seedlings found in triticale seeded plots (P<0.0001). Results do not di er from previous investigations showing a decrease in cereals when intersown with pulses (Lopetinsky 1999). As such, pulse mixes with triticale had 77, 19 and 44% (AAC Aberdeen, DL Tesoro and DL Delicious respectively) less emergence than that of triticale monocrop plots (P<0.0001). Among pulses, number of emergent individuals in mixes of DL Tesoro and DL Delicious surpassed those found in AAC Aberdeen by 19%; DL Tesoro mixes showed 35% less (P=0.003) emergent stands compared to DL Delicious and AAC Aberdeen mixes.
Lodging (Figure 1) was found to be a greater problem in mixes of CDC Austenson and DL Delicious. Indeed, the highest lodging rates were found in mixes containing DL Delicious, which may mean that this forage pea variety is very heavy for the cereal to withstand the e ect of its vines. There was very little lodging in DL Tesoro with Taza, which was as great as that found in Taza monocrop plots (P=0.0001). Dry weight (P=0.0028) and total weight (P=0.0044) were heavier in mixes of CDC Baler oat with DL Tesoro faba bean and lighter dry and total weight was found in mixes of CDC Austenson barley with the same pulse variety (Figure 2). It can be argued that most of the weight is provided by the oat stands compared to forage resulted in other plots, however, di erence in weight between cereals as a monocrop and cereals among mixes was not signi cant (P=0.1796, 0.4075 and 0.5042 for CDC Austenson, CDC Baler and Taza respectively). Weight among mixes containing DL Tesoro was 71% lower compared to those mixes containing AAC Aberdeen and DL Delicious (P=0.0385). Moreover, weight of AAC Aberdeen and DL Tesoro was 38% greater than that of DL Delicious (P=0.0195).
There was no di erence in protein (P=0.1029), or total digestible nutrients (P=0.5682). This disagrees with ndings showing that protein increases as a results of pulse addition to cereals (Johnson et al 1995; Lopetinsky 1999; Blade et al. 2001). It is possible the proportion of pulses was not great enough to identify themselves as di erent from cereal monocrop treatments. Acid (P=0.0005) and neutral (P=0.0003) detergent bre did vary across treatments. Protein content has been found to be una ected despite di erences yield numbers of either cereal and pulse (Lopetinsky 1999). In contrast it has been show in the past that nutritional value does not increase with pulse addition to cereal forage (MacCartney et al. 2004). More ADF and NDF was found in mixes of DL Tesoro and CDC Baler. Lowest values of ADF were found in

forages feed macronutrient content in interseeding
CDC Austenson monocrops and mixes of DL Delicious forage pea and Taza triticale. Lower values for NDF were found in the same monocrop and mix as well as DL Delicious and CDC Austenson mixes. Estimates indicated that ADF increased by 26% if CDC Baler was in pulse mixes than in monocrop CDC Baler plots. In addition, there was more ADF and NDF (54 and 52% respectively) in faba bean DL Tesoro (P=0.0055 and 0.0085) for ADF and NDF respectively compared to forage pea DL Delicious and yellow pea AAC Aberdeen and less ADF and NDF (67 and 75% respectively) in DL Delicious (P=0.0073 and 0.0048 for ADF and NDF respectively) when compared to DL Tesoro and AAC Aberdeen (Figure 3). This means that mixes with faba bean are likely to be more digestible and with less dry matter than those mixes containing forage pea. Indeed, studies have found that sheep had a greater tendency to eat faba bean straw than corn straw alone as faba bean provided had higher energy and digestibility content (Thorlacius 1997).

Phosphorus (P=0.3532), Magnesium (P=0.3310), Calcium (P=0.4304) and Sodium (P=0.1493) and Calcium to Phosphorus ratio (P=0.5840) were not signi cant among cereals as monocrop or mixes between cereals and pulses. Potassium was greater in plots where DL Tesoro faba bean abd CDC Baler oat was intersown (P=0.0092). There was 65% more K content in this mix compared to that found in CDC Baler as a monocrop and 31% more compared to other mixes with DL Tesoro. In conclusion, animals fed with pulse cereal annual forages may bene t from more digestibility and energy and in most cases more protein content. Growers may be concerned about the disadvantages of intersowing such as pest infestation and pulse vulnerability to pathogens. But the bene ts obtained from these mixtures may heavily outweighs the drawbacks as it agrees more with nature and promotes procurement of the environment.

$2.4 million to support growth of technology for meat processing
Across the country, businesses are developing innovative technologies to improve productivity and food supply, and P&P Optica Inc. is one example. The company has developed a smart imaging system to inspect meat automatically on the production line.
Today, on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Member of Parliament Bardish Chagger, announced $2,430,023 for P&P Optica Inc. through the AgriInnovate Program to help build and present its innovative, Canadian-made food inspection technology for meat processors.
The system analyzes the composition of food, evaluating properties like tenderness, freshness and its protein, water and fat content. It can detect imperfections and eliminate foreign bodies like plastic, bones and rubber. These tasks are done right on the production line in real time, generating information for processors to use to help improve their products, manage suppliers
and optimize production.
This investment will support P&P Optica Inc. to build demonstration units that allow them to present their technology to potential users. P&P Optica Inc.’s mission is to help processors improve the safety and quality of their products, make the food supply more sustainable and reduce food waste.
The investment will also build a demonstration room to optimize their technology for use by potential meat processing clients. This hyperspectral imaging technology evaluates the safety and freshness of meat products by analyzing the colour and moisture. It also gives a large range of data to processors.
Investing in automated inspection technologies like P&P Optica Inc.’s smart imaging system creates new market opportunities, grows the economy, and keeps the Canadian meat industry sustainable.
“Canada’s processors are adopting new technologies to
increase production and offer quality products across the country and the world. P&P Optica Inc.’s technology gives processors essential information that provides many benefits, including helping to reduce food waste. Our government is committed to investing in innovative projects that support the long-term growth and success of our agriculture and agri-food sector,” said MarieClaude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food
“I applaud P&P Optica Inc. for its leadership in developing rapid, real-time technology to evaluate meat quality. Not only is the company an innovator in Canada and internationally, it is also a community leader right here in Waterloo. Our support for the company’s innovative approach will help meat processors improve quality and sustainability,” added Bardish Chagger, Member of Parliament for Waterloo
“P&P Optica Inc. is grateful for the support of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and AgriFood through the
AgriInnovate program. PPO is focused on working with food processors to improve the safety and quality of our food supply, while reducing waste. We’re excited about the opportunity to promote our automated inspection system, which is already operating in plants across the US, to Canadian meat processors. We believe the Canadian meat industry, already a global leader in quality products, can increase our competitive edge even further by using technologies like PPO’s Smart Imaging System,” said Olga Pawluczyk, Chief Executive Officer, P&P Optica Inc.
The AgriInnovate program aims to accelerate the commercialization, adoption and/ or demonstration of innovative products, technologies, processes or services that increase sector competitiveness and sustainability.
P&P Optica Inc.’s smart imaging system uses physics to understand the chemistry of food, telling processors what is in their products.

Selling grain through an unlicensed buyer: take these steps first
Producers who are thinking about selling their grain through an unlicensed grain buyer need to consider a variety of factors, especially if they have production insurance through AFSC.
Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) defines a licensed buyer in the Contract of Insurance as a grain buyer, licensed by the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) as a primary elevator or terminal elevator. AFSC only accepts the receipted grade on sales from buyers who have a primary elevator or a terminal elevator license from the CGC.
The Commission offers several classes of licenses, and the requirements are different for each class. The terminal elevator and primary elevator are the only two classes where licensees are required to sample upon receipt and resolve grade and dockage issues through the CGC.
If grain is sold to a grain dealer, private buyer or process elevator before an AFSC on-farm inspector performs a post-harvest inspection; AFSC may use the client’s samples, based on the following conditions:
1. Clients need to contact their AFSC branch office and obtain
approval to collect samples for AFSC grading purposes prior to the grain being removed.
If clients do not receive approval before the grain is removed, AFSC will use the designated grade of the grain.
Grain sold directly off the field
If the sample is acceptable, AFSC will grade it and use the actual grade.
If the sample is not acceptable, AFSC will use the designated grade of the grain.
Grain sold from the bin
Grain sold from the bin and there is a minimum of 400 bushels remaining in the bin, an AFSC inspector will compare the client’s sample to the grain in the bin to determine if the sample is acceptable:
If the grain sample is acceptable, it will be graded accordingly.
If the sample is not acceptable, a new sample will be taken from the bin.
If the sample is not acceptable and there are less than 400 bushels remaining in the bin, AFSC will
use the designated grade of the grain.
If clients have retained a grain sample and there is a minimum of 400 bushels in the bin, the inspector will compare the sample to the grain in the bin to determine whether the sample is acceptable.
If the grain sample is acceptable, it will be graded accordingly.
If the sample is not acceptable, a new sample will be taken from the bin.
If there is less than 400 bushels remaining in the bin, AFSC will use the designated grade of the grain.
If the bin is being emptied, or if there will be less than 400 bushels remaining, clients can contact their branch prior to moving the grain for AFSC to come sample the grain before it is moved.
2. If approval is obtained, AFSC must receive a representative grain sample per truckload if sold off the field or per bin.
For answers to your questions or for more information about this process, please use Live Chat on our website or AFSC Connect, call our Client Service Centre at 1.877.899.2372.

Monitoring grain temperature and aerating grain
It is important to monitor grain temperature and to keep stored grain cool and dry by regular aeration or by turning it.
High moisture and warm temperatures in grain allow for the rapid growth of insects, fungi and the possible production of mycotoxins.
How temperature and moisture work
Grain is a very good insulator. When it is undisturbed, it holds temperature well. If warm grain is placed into storage and left undisturbed, convection currents develop and cause hot spots and moisture condensation. The greater the temperature differential (the difference between the temperature of the grain and the outside temperature), the stronger the convection currents. The stronger the convection, the greater the effect
of heating and condensation on the grain. This is particularly evident when stored grain is not leveled and the grain bulk forms a peak.
In the
bin:
The surface of the grain bulk forms a peak. Grain at the surface and just below the surface has high moisture content.
Warm grain is located in the centre of the grain bulk. Arrows represent the convection currents.
Cold air flows down from the surface of the grain, along the interior of the bin wall. The flow of cold air surrounds the warm grain.
At the bottom of the grain bulk the cold air is drawn to the centre of the grain by an upward flow of warmer air. The upward flow is
a convection current created at the centre of the grain bulk.
As the cold air is drawn to the centre of the grain, it warms up and flows up to the surface of the grain bulk where there is moist grain.
The warm air is cooled as it reaches the surface, condenses, and the cycle is repeated.
Determining the moisture content of grain Grain with a moisture above grade requirements can create an environment conducive to insect and fungal growth and development if it is not managed. Grain left unmanaged may increase in temperature and subsequent convection currents can cause surface condensation.
To determine the moisture content of grain at storage, take samples from bins every 3 to 4 weeks after storage if grain is not managed (no aeration or turning). Samples should be taken from several areas of the bulk and be kept in sealed plastic containers prior to testing.
Monitoring temperature
Check the temperature of the bin every 2 weeks. Measure temperature by using temperature sensing cables that are permanently installed or by probing the grain with an electronic sensor device.
If devices for measuring temperature are not available:
Assess the general temperature by inserting a metal rod into the grain at the top of the pile near the centre. The rod should reach at least one metre into the grain.
Leave the rod for approximately 30 minutes. Remove the rod and, with the palm of the hand, test it for warmth at various points from the tip. Any section of the rod that feels warm to the touch is an indication of heating and grain spoilage.
How aeration systems work
Aeration systems preserve stored grain and keep it dry by reducing the temperature of grain and reducing moisture migration. Appropriate aeration can prevent convection currents and condensation from occurring.
It is important to consider the physical characteristics of grain when considering aeration and drying. Factors such as grain class and storage configuration impact the static pressure and thus the aeration fan requirements. In general, as static pressure increases (e.g. increased height of the storage or change in the class of commodity in storage), the amount of time required to properly aerate also changes. Please consider consulting with your aeration system provider to determine aeration or drying times for the bin type or commodity that you have in store.

THE
OECD agriculture ministers’ meeting: Ag is at the heart of food security
Two days of meetings at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris, agriculture ministers and representatives from about 50 countries agreed to redouble their efforts and implement better practices to feed the growing world population, fight climate change, and ensure that farmers and workers can make a successful living from agricultural production.
The meeting was co-chaired by the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau and her New Zealand counterpart, the Honourable Damien O’Connor. This role acknowledged the leadership of Canada’s producers in sustainable development and ensuring global food security.
Although the challenges faced by the sector are similar around the world, each country adopts different approaches to meet their needs. The meeting allowed the Ministers to discuss best practices, and to reaffirm the importance of collaboration to encourage growth in the sector.
With this in mind, the participating countries asked the OECD, an organization whose mission it is to collect and analyze evidencebased data, to explore actions that would allow a better comparison of how each country is evolving their policies and sustainable development.
To conclude the meeting, Ministers Bibeau and O’Connor released a joint statement noting the productivity of discussions.
Additionally, participating OECD nations established a shared vision and goals for the agricultural sector through a Declaration on Transformative Solutions for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems.
At the meeting, Minister Bibeau had several bilateral meetings to deepen relationships with key partners:
Marc Fesneau, France’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty; Luis Planas, Spain’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Environmental Affairs; Atsushi Nonaka, Japan’s State Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; Mark Spencer, the United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs;
Charlie McConalogue, Ireland’s Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
Minister Bibeau reminded her counterparts about Canada’s reputation as a trustworthy trading partner and discussed opportunities for enhanced cooperation in the agricultural sector.
Prior to the OECD meeting, Minister Bibeau met with various agricultural stakeholders in Paris, notably:
A round table with French importers of Canadian agricultural products; two bilateral meetings with French agri-food companies that are making important investments in
Canada; and,
A meeting with the World Organisation for Animal Health DG, Dr. Monique Eloit to discuss global animal health standards in international trade.
Believing firmly that resilient and productive world food systems are essential to the sustainable growth of our economy, the Government of Canada continues to work with international partners and organizations that assemble countries with similar objectives, like the OECD.
“Our farmers are committed to feeding the planet while taking care of their land and their animals. These meetings allow us to showcase Canadian leadership, as external factors continue to have a growing impact on production. Canadians and our economy benefit from a strong, sustainable agriculture sector,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of
Agriculture and Agri-Food.
The OECD is an international organization that works with governments, policy makers and citizens to establish evidence-based international standards and find solutions to a range of social, economic and environmental challenges.
As outlined in the 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan, Canada has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40-45 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030, putting Canada on a path to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
Over the past two decades, farmers have roughly doubled the value of production while stabilizing greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, the amount of agricultural emissions per dollar of GD

The right time for soil sampling
Soil testing indicates soil nutrient reserves available for crop uptake. This is useful any year, and especially after low-yielding or high-yielding years when reserves may be more difficult to predict. Test results will help farms set fertilizer rates specific to the needs and yield potential of each field – a key step in implementing the right rate principle of 4R Nutrient Stewardship practices.
Soil sampling just prior to seeding provides the most accurate measure of nutrients available to the crop, but the springtime slot has practical limitations. Fall soil sampling can be almost as accurate and has various advantages: less time pressure to get samples collected and analyzed, especially if done after harvest; more time for fertilizer planning, including variable rate prescription maps; and the opportunity to buy the right amount of fertilizer at a lower price. (Prices are often, but not always, lower in the fall.)
The best time for fall sampling is after soil has cooled to at least 10°C. Cool soils reduce the microbial activity that can mobilize nutrients. Soil samples collected after this activity slows down will more closely reflect spring nitrate (NO3–) contents. If farms plan to band fertilizer in the fall, sampling when soils drop to 10°C (not too much lower) should allow for fall application before the ground freezes.
Sampling immediately after combining may show what nutrients, if any, were deficient for the current year’s crop, but early fall sampling is not recommended for planning next year’s fertilizer rates. Changes in nitrogen levels often occur after sampling due to moisturefueled mineralization and losses to leaching, denitrification and immobilization.
