CANADIAN AGRICULTURAL SAFETY WEEK

Farm safety means good business

Agriculture is a big business in Canada. Recent statistics show that Canada’s agriculture and agri-food system employs around 2 million people and generates about $140 billion annually, more than 7 per cent of the country’s GDP.

Canadian Agricultural Safety Week (CASW) raises awareness of farm safety on the third week of March of every year. Since farming is one of Canada’s most hazardous occupations, decision-makers in agriculture must account for health and safety in planning and budgeting.

In addition to the financial impacts, the Canadian Agriculture Safety Association (CASA) has identified three other areas where businesses are affected by worker health and safety.

1. COMMODITY LOSS

When a worker is injured, the remaining staff may take on increased work, which puts them at a higher risk of making dangerous mistakes. Even if a replacement

worker is hired, the new person needs training and time to get “up to speed.” The result of the farming operation is a loss in productivity.

2. LITIGATION EFFECTS

Workplace accidents make busines ses vulnerable to legal action at three levels. They’re liable to regulators like the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. They may also be sued in civil court or tried under criminal law. Beyond the legal costs, the outcomes of such actions can have long-term ramifications for businesses.

3. HUMAN IMPACT

Every year in Canada, more than 100 people, including some children, are lost to agricultural fatalities. The injured person is only the beginning of these impacts because injury and loss of life affect entire families and communities. In addition, a workplace injury impacts morale and quality of life for everyone working and living on that farm.

Improving farm safety with new technologies

Farm workers cover a lot of ground on any given day, exposing themselves to harsh weather and challenging landscapes. They also work long hours and operate dangerous equipment, often while fatigued. Fortunately, new technological innovations are reducing farm safety risks.

• Onboard tractor systems. Seat-mounted consoles like Data Screen Manager provide driving guidance and information about the tractor’s condition. Drivers get support while operating the tractor, and the device lets you know when it’s time for servicing or a part replacement.

• Drones. Thermal drones and high-definition cameras enable farm personnel to track cattle and inspect crops in real-time. Workers don’t have to risk rugged terrain and bad weather to collect the necessary data. It also saves labour hours that would otherwise be lost to travelling.

• Remote sensing technology. Wireless systems can remotely measure grain temperature and moisture, providing the metrics farmers need to gauge the health of their crops. These systems can be placed inside grain bins or in fields, enabling farmers to receive data remotely and reducing the risk of grain entrapment.

• Livestock health monitoring. Farmers can now attach wearable “fitness” trackers to their cattle to monitor vital signs, activity and behaviour. Farmers get real-time, remote data about the health and safety of their animals without having to endure hazardous environments.

Any innovation that reduces workload has the potential to lower worker stress and physical fatigue. By increasing efficiencies, these innovations are making farms safer places to work.

She is a first calfer so she shows calving signs early, but it might take her another 2 to 3 weeks to even calf.

My little sister and my mom have been rubbing and talking to Mini Me’s belly, hoping for the baby to kick or move. We can’t wait for her to calf she will have either a Charolais calf or a Speckled Park calf. Recently, we haven’t checked cows as often only about every three hours morning at night because of how warm it’s been. On a colder day we check every two hours in the morning and evening as well.

Hello again it’s Quintin Drschiwiski reporting from the Lakeshore 4-H Club. Today I’m gonna talk about calving.

It’s calving season, so every cattle farmer is getting prepped. My 4-H, cow Mini Me, is starting to show signs of calving. She is springing, starting to bag up, and she waddles when she walks.

The worst part about this is when you have to get up 3 o’clock in the morning to do a cow check especially on a really cold night. On another topic, we are all getting ready to do either do a demonstration or speeches. This year I’m going to do a demonstration. I also did a demonstration last year. My sister has to do a speech because it’s her first year.

Early history of the Baldonnel Women’s Institute

In 1996, Evelyn Hadland (Mrs. Austin Hadland) wrote a sevenpage history of the Baldonnel Women’s Institute. Evelyn was the historian for the group at that time. There was no trouble reading the history pages as Evelyn had been an elementary school teacher and her writing is perfect McLean’s style.

Baldonnel Women’s Institute 1935-1955

Mr. Jack Abbott, Justice of the Peace and owner of the Dominion Illustration Sub-station at Baldonnel, organized the Farmers’ Institute in 1931 and then encouraged the women of the District to form the Baldonnel Women’s Institute. Although they had been meeting informally for several years, they did not receive their charter until November 1935.

The first Peace River District convention was held in St. John’s Church Hall in July 1935 with one hundred and eighty-seven ladies present.

The first officers

were Mrs. A.R. Hadland President, Mrs. I. Pomeroy, Secretary, and Mrs. C. Foster, Publicity Convenor. Mrs. Foster sent the news of the first meeting and subsequent meetings to the Peace River Block News in Dawson Creek.

(The Alaska Highway News was not published in Fort St. John until the spring of 1944.)

Other charter members were Mrs. J. Tod, Mrs. J. Kirkpatrick, Mrs. K. Birley, Miss May Birley, Mrs. I. McLellan, Mrs. R. Tod, Mrs. W. Wiles, Mrs. H. Wiles, Mrs. C. Ohland, Mrs. Ed Thomas, Mrs. C. Dingman, Mrs. W. Colpitts, Mrs. B. Simpson, Mrs. W. Rider, Mrs. A. LeClerc and Mrs. Percy Cushway.

The meetings were held in St. John’s Church Hall (Anglican) until the weather turned cold and then they were held in the member’s homes.

On several occasions

Mr. Wilbur Wiles would hitch his team to his sleigh and along with his wife Ethel would call for Mrs. John Tod, Mrs. R. Tod, Mrs. H. Wiles,

Mrs. A.R. Hadland, Mrs. J. Kirkpatrick, and Mrs. C. Ohland to take them to the meetings at the Hall. Other means of transportation were cutters, stone-boats, buggies, democrats, wagons, and horseback. Some women would walk four miles. After crops were threshed and the harvest work completed, they held chicken suppers, followed by card parties or dances. These happy occasions helped to raise funds so the Women’s Institute could fulfill their obligations to the school children and the P.R. District WI.

One the of the first handicraft projects was the making of a felt tablecloth embroidered in blue and gold. However, Mrs. George Stewart, the storekeeper’s wife, was secretary and kept the register, minute books and tablecloth at her home at the back of the store. The records and tablecloth were burned when the Baldonnel Store burned in 1939.

During World War II (1939-1945) the women bought a spinning

wheel and Mrs. W. Rider spun wool from which the women knitted socks, scarves, mitts, and toques to send to local boys in the armed forces in Europe and Africa. They sent parcels of food through the Fort St. John Red Cross.

They sponsored a Youth Training course at the Hall in the summer of 1947. In 1950 they helped the fort St John W.I. provide a rest room in Fort St. John for the rural ladies and children.

Members of the Women’s Institute were caretakers of the St. John’s Church Hall for many years and had the Hall wired for electricity in 1952.

Until the early 1950s the members helped to support a protege child in France and sent food and clothing twice a year.

Glenn’s work with and knowledge of horses is diverse. He travels extensively each year delivering horsemanship clinics across Canada, the United States, South America and Europe.

Glenn leads camps at his home near Fort St. John - The Horse Ranch. For 23 consecutive years, he has led the Learning Holiday Adventure High & Wild in the Northeastern Rocky Mountains – a remote location 160 Kilometers from the nearest roads.

Glenn was in charge of herd development using his horsemanship program for a herd of 200+ wild horses. This included: the breeding program, seasonal round-up, the taming/ gentling, foot breaking, trimming, overall maintenance of the herd and welfare.

Ultimately horses were prepared annually for people from all over the world, with varying degrees of horsemanship abilities to be able to safely ride in the wilderness of the Canadian Rockies.

2022 Alberta lamb and sheep market update

“Provincial live lamb prices as reported by Statistics Canada show an annual decrease in 2022 compared to 2021 for all provinces except Alberta,” says Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government. “Alberta average live weight price was reported at $242.44 per hundredweight for 2022, up 4.7% from 2021. Ontario has normally been the benchmark market for western pricing. Quebec reported an average live lamb price of $286.98 per hundredweight, down 7% from 2021.”

Auction market price volatility increased in 2021 and 2022. In 2021, average weekly price for heavy weight lambs peaked in January at $396.50 per hundredweight, but declined to a low of $182.50 per hundredweight during the first week of October. In 2022, average weekly price for heavy lamb rose to $316.50 per hundredweight the first week of May but plummeted to a low of $134 per hundredweight in midAugust. Light weight lamb prices

experienced even more dramatic swings in 2022.

Boyda points out provincial slaughter has followed a seasonal trend in 2022 but adds the total slaughter volume of 22,980 head was 8% lower than 2021, nearly 23% lower than 2020 and almost 11% lower than the 5-year average.

Alberta has maintained a relatively stable market in light of the recent sale of an Alberta lamb processing plant and Iron Springs feedlot to Préval Ag,” says Boyda. “The Quebecbased company is recognized as a leader in the agri-food industry (veal, beef, lamb, field crops, horticulture and grain processing). With Préval Ag’s strong foothold in the international market, the future for the Alberta lamb sector looks brighter.”

Sales of lick tubs, molasses blocks, and protein supplement continue to be strong. The question to consider is: what Is the appropriate product or combination of products to use? There are many factors to consider along with the type of animal being fed, feed quality, availability, and weather.

Five pieces of information are needed before making a decision

1. Representative feed samples with accurate analysis

2. Animal weights

3. Bale weights

4. Ability to weigh out components in the ration (Total Mixed Ration)

5. How each feed is supplied.

Supplementing protein can be done in many ways. Is there a higher quality forage available? If not, does the product of choice meet animal requirements?

Two options are to feed one pound of a 20% protein supplement ($385 / tonne, or 17.5 cents a pound). Feeding 0.4 pounds of wheat distillers’ grains with solubles (WDG) which contains 48% protein at a cost of $535 / tonne, or 24 cents a pound) supplies the same amount of protein. If protein is the only concern, the WDG is more economical to use. Both options are usually fed with grain or mixed into silage in a controlled feeding program.

Another option is to feed tubs or blocks, free choice. With this option, it is not possible to know how much product individual animals are consuming. The free choice systems have a greater risk of not achieving the intake that is required.

In the above example, a 1,400-pound cow in late pregnancy requires a 9% protein diet (dry basis) or 1,020 grams of protein per day. Adding one pound of a 20% supplement or 0.4 pounds of WDG increases protein content in the ration by 90 grams or 0.5% on a dry matter basis. If the ration contains 8% protein, it would be necessary to double the feeding rates to meet requirements. There are times when label recommendations do not work. Each situation is different. Balancing rations can improve the use of available feeds and evaluate which purchased product(s) best meet the needs of the animals. It has the potential to reduce costs as well.

Hey, I hope that everyone had a great Valentine’s Day!

Awards Night was January 26th, 2023 and it went great. We got to visit with people that we haven’t seen in a long time and the dance was awesome, I had a lot of fun and I hope all the other Clubs did too. It was great to see everyone that was there.

We also did fun games and we had a photo booth there as well. We did musical chairs and that was a lot of fun, all the Club members from each Club joined in for that. A huge thank you to everyone that made Awards Night possible.

Since a lot of us have been very busy with calving, Sara and I haven’t been able to do much with our 4-H animals. But we do spend as much time with them as we can, we have been petting them on their head and neck little bit every morning and night. They are really growing, and they are also getting pretty quiet.

Everyone’s steers are growing great, I am very proud of our younger members and how well they are doing with their projects. They are even leading their animals around some. So keep up the great work and remember to have fun.

We had our Club Communications and Club meeting Feb 12, 2023 Club Communications went good, everyone did very well with their presentations. Ryder did very well with his speech. Everyone did very well with their educational displays; they were interesting and really well done.

We talked about what we are doing for our barn decorations for at Achievement Days, District Communications March 3, 2023, and we also talked about Judging Rally.

Braunvieh

The German word “Braunvieh” means “Brown Cattle”. Braunvieh enjoy the status as being one of the oldest pure breeds, which originated in the alpine regions of Switzerland. Their colour is of various shades of brown with males generally being darker and the calves are born almost white, darkening with age. They typically have dark pigmentation around the eyes, black noses with light-coloured bands around the muzzles, and strong black hooves.

Braunvieh is a medium-sized, dual purpose breed, which excels in maternal traits and docility. They are very hardy, adapting to extreme cold or heat and are known for their longevity. About 40% of the cattle in Switzerland are Braunvieh and, due to their high performance and exceptional tolerance to various climates, they are raised in more than 60 countries, from the Arctic Circle to the tropics, at altitudes varying between sea level and 12,500 feet.

The history of Braunvieh can be revisited through documents preserved in monasteries, whose occupants took great pride in raising and improving these cattle. Among these historical files, notes indicate trading of brown cattle in the eighth century and provide records of performance dated as early as 1315. Standardized production records on milk and meat performance

Charolais

Charolais were first imported to Canada in 1956 from the United States. Later, cattle were imported directly from France. In 1959 the Canadian Charolais Association (CCA) was formed and in 1960 it was formally recognized as a Breed Association under the Animal Pedigree Act of Canada.

The CCA is a non-profit organization that derives funding from member subscriptions and the Whole Herd Enrolment (WHE) fees. The Canadian Charolais Association operates a number of performance testing initiatives on behalf of its members. However the backbone of the performance program is Whole Herd Enrolment in which breeding and calving information is tracked on each cow every year.

In 1869, the first export of brown cattle took place to the U.S., where they became the foundation in the development of the Brown Swiss dairy cow, by constantly selecting for high milk production.

In 1968, the first Braunvieh from Switzerland arrived in Canada and there have been several subsequent importations of live animals and semen and later of embryos and the result has been the development of Canadian Braunvieh that have been marketed and proven world-wide.

Most of the Braunvieh herds can be found in Alberta, with numbers increasing in other provinces. Highly profitable production, long productive lives, docile temperament, wide range of adaptability and rapid growth are all distinctive characteristics of this breed.

The first Lowline cattle in North America came to Canada in 1996. Interest in them has grown steadily since.

The Canadian Lowline Cattle Association was established in 1997. Fullbloods and percentage cattle are now recognized in separate herd books. Lowline cattle were developed by the Trangie Agricultural Research Centre in NSW, Australia.

In 1929, a choice Aberdeen Angus herd from Canada, supplemented by additional animals from the USA and Scotland, was purchased by the Australian government to form the foundation of a research herd. From 1929 to 1963 this Angus research herd was prominent in the Australian showing circuit and won many awards. The herd was closed to outside genetics in 1964, and between 1974 and 1992 research was performed to investigate the efficiency of converting feed to beef within groups of different sized animals.

The Angus herd was divided into three groups; the “High Line”, the “Low Line” and a random “Control Line”. A detailed evaluation of weight gain, feed intake, reproductive performance, milk production, carcass yield and quality and structural soundness was carried out. Through 20 years of research, the smaller “Low Line” cattle were found to be extremely efficient converters of feed to beef while maintaining performance in the other characteristics studied. Interest in the smaller animals was great, and a new breed was created when the herd was dispersed to private

breeders in 1992.

Lowline possess traits that will help them excel in the cattle industry. They are extremely hardy, naturally polled, black or red in color, and small framed. At all stages of their growth they are about 60% of the size of normal beef cattle. Lowline cattle mature early. They are easy calving and docile. At birth calves average 40 to 50 pounds. Calving losses are extremely low and even heifers have great ease in calving.

The dams make excellent mothers and provide ample milk. Cows at maturity average about 100 cm at the hip while equivalent age bulls stand about 110 cm. Lowline are extremely efficient grass feeders and can even be finished on grass. They exhibit rapid early growth. Carcasses yield high, with reduced fat but greater marbling. Cuts are smaller which is attractive to the health conscious consumer.

Half blood calves average 65 pounds but wean off heavy with high yielding carcasses and consistent marbling. Lowline bulls in a commercial herd provide easier handling, calving ease, increased stocking rates, increased feed efficiency and high yield quality carcass characteristics. The ease and profitability of beef production increases once the frame score of the herd is reduced.

Hays Converter is the first beef breed developed by a Canadian livestock producer which was recog nized as a pure breed and registered under provi sions of the Animal Pedigree Act in Canada. Since its conception, the Hays Converter has produced superior animals with selection based solely on per formance.

Hays Converters are larger, well-fleshed and longbodied. Strong legs and good feet add hardiness and longevity. Particularly noticeable are the excellent udders of the cows. Mature females weigh between 1250-1450 pounds and mature bulls average between 2200 and 2400 pounds in breeding condition.

Hays Converter cows produce abundant milk, calve easily and wean a 550 to 650 pound calf.

Hays Converter cows mature early, breed early and produce outstanding calves yearly regardless of the breed of the sire they are mated to an excellent cross.

Maine Anjou

The Maine-Anjou breed originated in France in the 19th century, taking their name from the Mayenne and Anjou river valleys in which they were developed. In France the breed has evolved as a dual-purpose breed, where the cows are selected for their milk production, and bull calves are fed for market. The traditional colouring is very dark red with white markings on the head, belly, rear legs and tail. White on other parts of the body is also common.

The first Maine-Anjou arrived in Canada in 1969 and later through artificial insemination the breed entered the United States. In 1970, the Canadian Maine-Anjou Association was formed. Over the past 35 years in Canada, selective breeding has: reduced the frame size of both fullbloods & purebreds, drastically reduced birthweights, tightened up the front end, thickened up the back end, developed a polled feature in both fullbloods & purebreds and developed multiple colours due to the recessive fullblood colour gene, resulting in the traditional red & white (fullblood) colouring, solid black, solid red and other colour patterns.

Advantages to breeding Maine-Anjou are high rates of gain, feed efficiency, adaptability to climatic extremes, superior carcass quality, docility, and smooth muscling. Bulls are known for being: high gainers, with a quiet disposition, sound conformation and the ability to be horned, polled or scurred. Females are recognized for their: quiet disposition, strong milking ability, maternal instincts, extreme longevity (10 years or more), easy calving ability and high fertility.

Crossbreeding with Maines adds: stretch, growth rate, quiet disposition and more pounds at weaning to a herd. Maines can also be utilized to breed for or select against other specific traits. Crossed with white-faced cattle, the Maine influence produces dark pigmentation around the eyes.

Provinces urge agency to reconsider pesticide ruling

The PMRA recently changed approved uses for lambda-cyhalothrin, an effective pesticide that many farmers rely on to control grasshoppers and flea beetles.

Among other changes, the pesticide can no longer be used for any crop that may end up as livestock feed. As a result, its manufacturers have pulled their products from Western Canada.

Due to a continued drought in some parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan, grasshoppers are again likely to be a concern in the 2023 growing season, and the PMRA’s decision leaves farmers with one less tool to address potentially destructive pests.

It could also mean the inability for canola producers to sell their products as livestock feed, which could impact availability for cattle and lamb producers. There are also possible total food production impacts in a time of worldwide food insecurity.

“At a time when our farmers are finally finding

their footing after a rough couple of years, this decision could set many of them back. I urge the federal ministers and the PMRA to reconsider their decision and make it easier, not harder, for Alberta’s farmers to feed people in Canada and across the world,” said Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation

“Without access to effective insecticides, Saskatchewan producers are at risk of being placed at a competitive disadvantage and will be facing significant losses. Saskatchewan supports industry’s calls for an extension to the lambda-cyhalothrin re-evaluation decision to alleviate pressure on producers and help ensure a stable supply of feed for livestock,” added David Marit, Saskatchewan Minister of Agriculture

“With extreme flea beetle pressure, hot spots for grasshoppers and cutworms across the Prairies and forecasted outbreaks, the lambdacyhalothrin decision could severely impact our yields, our livelihoods, feedstocks and food prices. Lambda-cyhalothrin has a significant market share, and it will strain farmers to

source alternative products. The PMRA needs to base its decisions on sound science and be aligned with our largest trading partner,” said Roger Chevraux, chair, Alberta Canola.

In 2019, the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency removed restrictions on lambda-cyhalothrin’s use. The PMRA made the opposite decision, which has led to confusion about what will be done about livestock feed coming from Alberta’s largest trading partner.

Minister Horner and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit have written to the ministers of Health Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, outlining producers’ concerns and urging them to encourage the PMRA to reconsider its decision.

To ensure western farmers have an effective solution for the coming growing season, the PMRA would need to enact an emergency reinstatement, which would also give the agency time to make a more informed decision.

This scholarship would help me with tuition and many other expenses that I will have in college. Currently I am paying for the majority of my school fees including tuition, transportation and materials with money I have earned and saved from working. Since I do not have an education fund to help pay for my post-secondary schooling, working for the past two summers and part of the school year has been the primary means for nancing the costs. Next year, I will be transferring to the University of Alberta and will have increased tuition and living costs. Being able to fund this school year primarily with scholarships would better prepare me for the expenses I will encounter next year. If I were to receive the Oldtimers’ Association scholarship, I would be able to focus more on my studies this school year rather than balancing both school and work, as that is my current situation.

I am involved in a number of extra-curricular activities, such as both taking and giving private lessons, as well as volunteering weekly at my church’s youth group as a leader. Last school year, I played in community orchestras for a variety of organizations as opportunities arose and am planning on doing so again. I will also be taking an additional music course outside of school for my violin exam with the Royal Conservatory of Music. Combined, these activities are a large time commitment, which proves maintaining a balance between school, work, and extra-curricular activities to be dif cult at times. However, without additional nancial support, I may be poorly set up for success in subsequent years of education.

The biggest commitment I have made to being involved in the community would be joining the Sexsmith Fire Department. I joined in the summer of 2021 as a cadet and have been attending weekly evening practices as well as occasional weekend training courses since then. Upon turning 18 in May of this year I have been a fully responding member of the department. I have participated in numerous spring highway clean-ups for local club fundraising. Additionally, my father Is a member of the Sexsmith Elks and so I have volunteered to help them at various functions such as cemetery maintenance and Chataqua Days. As a university student, I plan to continue being an active participant in student life in my residence and faculty.

I am proud to say that my ancestors on both sides of my family were pioneers in the Grande Prairie region and that my family is still very much connected with the way of life of our predecessors. On the Sandboe/Torgerson side of the family, all three of my uncles still farm together just as my grandfather farmed with his 4 brothers. There are four living generations of Sandboes still residing in the Grande Prairie area to this day. All my aunts, uncles, and cousins still live in the Peace Region, with the only exceptions being those who are away for school. Additionally, I still live on the same plot of land that my great-grandparents settled back in 1927, and my dad farms land that has supported our family for generations.

I have always felt grateful to my ancestors for allowing me to live my life the way I do today. Settling this region was a task that took grit, determination, perseverance, and a dream. A dream that all the risks and hard work associated with travelling away from home and setting up a homestead would lead to a better life. Today, I am living evidence that those dreams were ful lled. I am proof that not only were my ancestors able to overcome the hardships that they faced, but that their endeavours have allowed generations of their descendants to live in prosperity. And while I may never face the exact same challenges as my ancestors, such as plowing elds with horses or cutting down logs to build my own house, I believe that I have inherited the same traits that allowed the pioneers of this area to succeed all those years ago. I have always been a hard worker and I am not someone who gives up easily. Whether it be school, work, or a hobby, I put my all into whatever I do and I see things through to the end. Throughout high school I worked hard to achieve the second highest grades in my class for grades 10 and 11 and I anticipate for grade 12 too. I have been accepted into Northwestern Polytechnic’s program of Bachelor of Commerce, and intend to study there for two years, after which I will be transferring to the University of Alberta for the completion of my degree. As a student, I will strive to continue to receive good grades as I enter the commerce program. And will maintain my integrity in every situation.

Being a descendant of Bjame Throness, I value the hard work that was done to homestead this land of the Peace Country. My family grain farms, and so I get to see the development of technology that has led to the farming industry of today. I enjoy helping on the farm and have worked for my dad through previous summers and harvests running equipment and helping with day to day chores. With my commerce degree, I intend to get a job in the farming industry on the business side of things.

I enjoy playing many sports such as badminton and volleyball. This year I was able to attend and place second in tier 2 girls’ doubles badminton provincials. I also write, play and sing original music; currently, I am enrolled in an online music producing course and producing my own music, which has helped me to understand how the economy plays into every industry, not only farming.

Every year, I volunteer at the La Glace Summer Vacation Bible School. I have volunteered there for the past ve years; this year I taught grades three/four. Through this, I built long lasting relationships with kids and adults from all over the Peace Country.

At my church, Bethel Church, I have been the worship leader for the last four years. Through this, I have learned how to lead a group of people, including how to handle moments of group confrontation.

The local Christian youth program, La Glace Youth Group, Is held at my house and run by my parents. As such, I welcome each youth and make sure they feel comfortable in a group of people, which has given me valuable communication skills.

I love the Peace Country, and l don't want to leave. It's been my home forever and I have built friendships and connections to last a lifetime here. The roots planted by my Great Grandpa are not easily forgotten, and although I'll have to go off to the big city to nish my degree, I'll never forget where I started it.

RDAR Invests in Alberta Regional Silage Trial Program

RDAR is investing $150,000 for 2-year funding for a project to operate regional silage trial program in Alberta.

The goal of the project is to conduct Regional Silage Trials in a very targeted and controlled method focusing on delivering high quality data that is relevant to the Alberta livestock and crop sectors.

Efficiency and results are primary drivers of the new project. Hence a very compact program will be operated for the next 2 years focusing on delivering data in areas with high silage acreage. In building the proposal, other prairie provinces as well as cattle feeders, beef and dairy sectors in Alberta have been consulted. The rising cost of operating the project has also been taken into consideration, with coordination of sites to be within proximity of other regional variety trial sites to ensure efficiency for both trial coordinators and site cooperators. Rigor of the project will be ensured by adopting the bylaws, policies, procedures, and protocols of ARVAC*, and amending to fit silage trials where appropriate.

This program will constantly be evaluated for efficiency and relevancy, which is intended to operate a project that delivers value to the agriculture sector in Alberta.

Alberta Seed Processors (ASP) will act in an administrative capacity along with significant contribution of industry partners including, but not limited to Alberta-British Columbia Seed Growers (ABCSG), Alberta Beef Producers, professional agronomists, plant breeders, plot cooperators, and private seed companies. The results of the silage regional variety trials will be published in the Alberta Seed Guide and be used to guide producer decisions on new varieties.

Beattie inducted into Agriculture Hall of Fame

local dairy organizations to shape and modernize what is now known as Alberta Milk.

“This is a very special award. Looking at the previous list of recipients and those inducted today, I really am humbled to be included in this group of Albertans who have given so much to agriculture in this province,” says Bruce Beattie. “I truly believe that what I have received from my involvement far exceeds what I gave, and I feel privileged to have met and worked with so many amazing people.”

Beattie has been a constant driving force in the evolution of Alberta’s dairy industry for over 50 years. Through his work with numerous industry organizations, including Alberta Milk, the Canadian Milk Supply Management Committee, Alberta Farm Animal Care and the Dairy Nutrition Council, he has lead various initiatives to ensure continual improvement, modernization and unity in the dairy industry and agriculture sector.

As well as his farm duties, Beattie began working as a local representative for the Red Deer Milk Producers Association and provided a dedicated commitment to continual improvement of organizational structure and governance with a long list of agriculture producer-focused groups and organizations. Over the course of the next 20 years, he worked tirelessly with various

Through his leadership and guidance, Beattie helped lead them through fundamental structural change in how dairy products are produced, transported and marketed in Alberta. This transformation resulted in a milk producers group with society status evolving into a provincially recognized entity under the Marketing of Agricultural Products Act. The provincial recognition allowed Alberta Milk’s enhanced standing to provide guidance and development of the Alberta quota production system.

Beattie’s leadership and support was crucial in increasing the research check-off dollars, and the establishment of the Alberta Milk Dairy Research Endowment Fund. The check-off increase helped establish and support the Dairy Research and Technology Centre’s Strategic plan while the endowment offered a significant boost to dairy research.

While the primary focus of Beattie’s dedication to agriculture was on the dairy industry, his passion and involvement has had a lasting effect on many sectors of agriculture. The advancement of animal welfare and environmental initiatives, specifically focused on agriculture, are directly linked to his work. In addition, as chair of the Alberta Products Marketing Council, Beattie led a governance overhaul that strengthened the relationship between producers and processors.

Beattie’s leadership helped develop the Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture (AESA) Council

and the AESA Program. AESA made significant contributions to increasing awareness about environmental issues in the industry, and set the foundation for broader partnerships to work together to achieve environmentally sound management systems and competitiveness.

After 20 years of involvement in federal and provincial agricultural initiatives, Beattie took on a larger role with shaping agriculture within his own community. He

served as a member and chair on the Mountain View County Agriculture Service Board, and 11 years as Mountain View County councillor serving as reeve for 10 years. While engaged in municipal politics, Beattie applied an agricultural lens to all decisions of council and acted as the foremost champion to support and enhance the local agricultural industry.

Rural communities are playing a key role in the growth and diversification of Alberta’s economy. To keep the momentum going, Alberta’s government is providing $2.1 million in capacity building grants. The grants will advance regional and targeted initiatives that will lead to sustainable, rural economic development and diversification.

“Alberta’s government is doing what it takes to ensure rural communities remain a driving force in our economy. Grant recipients will deliver initiatives that strengthen economic development capacity and promote sustainable growth and diversification in our rural communities.”

The Economic Development in Rural Alberta Plan has a strategic focus on rural economic capacity building. Grant recipients will turn this strategy into action by supporting businesses and

municipalities with resources to enhance economic development opportunities in rural Alberta. Organizations that have received one-time funding to build capacity within their communities are:

Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies

$50,000 for the Rural Development Cluster Coaching Series that focuses on developing agri-tourism, creating rural partnerships and using regional approaches.

Alberta Women Entrepreneurs

$195,000 to expand the NextStep to Success program, which offers Indigenous women entrepreneurs with mentorship, business training and guidance on developing small business supports.

Alberta Municipalities

$150,000 to support their members in accessing grant programs for municipalities.

Economic Developers Alberta $130,000 for education and skills training, mentoring and creating networks that share best practices.

Rural Municipalities of Alberta $150,000 for a rural-focused economic development officer course and a micro-grant program to support members in determining economic development opportunities within a municipality or region.

Young Agrarians

$100,000 for an on-farm apprenticeship program to develop hands-on skills and knowledge to run a rural farm business.

Alberta’s government has also committed $125,000 to each of the nine Regional Economic Development Alliances to support long-term economic prosperity in their respective regions.

2) Are guards fitted to equipment where there is a risk of limbs, hair or clothing being caught (e.g. PTO, auger, unguarded belts and pulleys)?

2023 Ag Awareness Summit examines public perceptions of industry

Canada’s Ag Day is also celebrated on February 15, a national day to share about the industry and help people learn where their food comes from.

“Agriculture is a rapidly evolving industry that impacts everyone. As technologies change and consumers become more interested in food production, it’s increasingly important that we help inform the public on what we do, how we do it sustainably, and why,” says David Marit, Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister

Agriculture communicators and leaders are coming together in Saskatoon for the 2023 Agriculture Awareness Summit to explore how the industry is adapting to changes in public perception and connecting with consumers.

The summit, which takes place February 14 and 15, comes a decade after the ministry’s inaugural Agriculture Awareness Summit in 2013. This year’s event, funded by the federal, provincial and territorial governments through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) and co-hosted by Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, will examine the progress made over the past 10 years and how consumer trends continue to drive public trust considerations regarding agriculture.

“Canadians are becoming more removed from primary agriculture. These past ten years have shown that consumers want to engage with farmers and ranchers about how food is grown. We are continuing to create those opportunities,” adds Clinton Monchuk, Executive Director of Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan and local farmer

Building public trust is a strategic priority for the Ministry of Agriculture. This event brings industry together so that efforts related to public trust and connecting with consumers can be more focused and unified.

The summit features speakers from a variety of backgrounds to discuss topics such as

communications, consumer trends, dealing with unexpected change and how to use social media effectively.

The summit is supported through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP), a five-year, $3 billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen and grow Canada’s agriculture, agri-food and agri-products sectors.

This includes a $2-billion commitment that is cost-shared 60% federally and 40% provincially/ territorially for programs that are designed and delivered by provinces and territories, including a $388-million investment in strategic initiatives for Saskatchewan agriculture.
