Green Valley 4-H Club report
Since my last report we have had our Club Communications, and it went really well.
It was the biggest one we’ve had in a long while and I think everyone had fun with it. Our little “Clover Buds “did a little colouring Educational board on horses and it looked really good. Good job guys. I personally did an Educational display on “Support Animals “and I was really proud of it.
Seven members of our club went to the District Communications, including me, Jada Morton did her Educational Display on “ Honeybees” , Kade Gertz did his on “ How Many Minutes “, and Emry Clay did hers on “Premarin Mares “. Farrah Wieler did a speech on Snowman which was a famous horse and Jesse Giesbrecht and Teana Kimmie did a Demonstration on “How To Clean A Saddle”. At home the bonding and leading has been going pretty well for everyone. My steers personally love their grain and almost eat me every time I feed them. The Green Valley Horse club is very new to
us, but they are learning to work with horses and getting to know each other.
They have had a meeting on February 24 and after the meeting they did a colouring page “My Dream Horse” and then they watched a movie called “Flicka”. They have also watched a movie on different horse disciplines barrel racing and freestyle reining and also horse jumping. Their next meeting is on April 6. Which they will be learning horse, safety, and the importance of wearing helmets and also decorating their helmets. It’s gonna be a very fun time.
Thanks again for reading my article. I hope you have enjoyed it; and thanks to our sponsor. Katelynn Bueckert reporting for Green Valley 4-H Club.

Prespatou 4-H Club Report
I don’t know about any of you, but I am done with this snow.
Hello readers my name is Jessica Wiebe I am a Sr member in the Prespatou 4-H Community Club. So for any of you new readers I don’t write this whole article by myself.
We have a Jr member that writes the dog section for the article.
This is one of the most fun months of the 4-H season. We are very busy. It is one of the most productive months of the 4-H season, working with our animals, naming our animals, picking out our theme for the barn displays and with communications. Our club has gone through club communications and district communication. We all placed in our club communications, so we went to the next level district communications, one board, the only demonstration, and one out of two speak and shows of our club will be going to the next level, which is regionals. Regionals are on April 15.
The beef projects have been doing amazing!! We will be having another weigh in this month. Now that it’s been warmer we will have more time to work with our animals. I can not wait to learn new things. I am really excited for the achievement days. I have so really excited news to share with my guys. We had some unexpected lambs this year! Lucky the ewe that I am using for my ewe with lamb project got pregnant in the summer. Thankfully we were blessed with a healthy ewe lamb. She was born on February 2. We are getting our other project animals this month. Luckily my little sister and I don’t have to wait to get our lambs. We will be using our own home grown lambs this year.
Although the other member that is doing sheep projects will be getting her lambs towards the end of the month. She is getting her animals from a local farm.
Hello my name is Arielle Reimer and I am part of the Prespatou 4-H Community Club. I am excited to share an awesome article about dog 4-H with you. When you have a dog in 4-H you have to make sure your dog is well socialized. If it’s not you will have a hard time at Achievement Days. That’s why you want to have your dog meet up with other dogs in 4-H so the dogs can get used to one another. When your dog meets up with another dog, we have to make sure you have a positive attitude. So you and your dog will both feel calm. It is important that your dog is calm so your dog and feel more comfortable when he is around other dogs anywhere you go.
As me and my dog are getting ready for Achievement Days we are making new friends along the way. My dog and the other dog projects met up on March 2. My dog did not like the other dog as much as the other dog liked my dog. Towards the end, if we were giving both dogs attention, they would sit side-by-side and not bark or growl. So overall, they did a good job for their first meeting.
That’s all we have for you this week. We hope you have an amazing spring.
Until next time.

“What We Heard” report on fertilizer emissions
levels by 2030, and will unlock new economic opportunities.
Canadian farmers are on the front lines of climate change and are already taking action to improve resilience and enhance profitability while reducing emissions. The Government of Canada set a target to reduce fertilizer-related emissions, which led to consultations with the sector to gather feedback on how best to support farmers and producers through voluntary measures moving forward.
Over 2,000 submissions were received through the online consultation, technical workshops and town hall meetings between March and October 2022. Farmers, producers, industry associations, provinces and territories, scientists and environmental organizations provided their input. AAFC analyzed the valuable feedback, and today, published the Fertilizer Emissions Reduction Target Consultation What We Heard Report. The feedback will inform AAFC’s work, in collaboration with the sector, to meet Canada’s fertilizer emissions reduction target, of 30% from 2020
The desire to increase communication and strengthen engagement between Government and the agricultural sector emerged through the consultation process. To this end, in partnership with industry, a Fertilizer Working Group is being formed under the Sustainable Agriculture Strategy Advisory Committee.
The feedback received through the consultations will allow the Government of Canada to ensure that its programs are designed to support the adoption of beneficial management practices, implement clean technologies, as well adapt its research and innovation programs so that they are suitable for real-world application.
Canadian producers are experts at managing and protecting their land for future generations. They are already adapting to new growing conditions caused by climate change, and their ability to make a living depends on a healthy environment. AAFC looks forward to building on the good work already underway in the agriculture sector to support Canada’s environmental and economic goals, while feeding a growing world population.

IMPROVING COW BODY CONDITION BETWEEN
CALVING AND BREEDING
BC’s agricultural sector allowed late participation in income-protection program
B.C. farmers and producers can still participate in AgriStability for the 2022 farming year and have until June 30, 2023, to pay their fees and secure coverage under the program.
AgriStability is a federalprovincial-territorial program that provides support to growers with large financial declines caused by production losses, disease outbreak and increased costs or declining market conditions.
agricultural community have faced over the past year, and we encourage anyone who is eligible to retroactively sign up, so they can improve their financial situation for the coming year, while continuing to produce the food and food products we all appreciate and rely on.”
With a cold December, it was difficult to maintain cow body weight which has resulted in some animals being thin at calving. In a previous post (April, 2022), the negative impact of thin cows on reproductive efficiency was discussed.
The cow’s lactation period has the highest nutrient requirement in the annual production cycle. It is difficult to have cows or first calf heifers to gain weight.
The inclusion of a high quality forage or silage along with cereal grains is necessary. The standard ration with 11% protein is adequate. But an energy level of 65% TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients) will maintain or result in minimal weight gain.
If the cow is 85 pounds lighter than required at calving, an additional pound of gain per day is needed for the animal to be in good condition at the start of the breeding season.
An example: a recommended ration for a 1,400 pound cow in good condition and gaining ¼ pound per day could be fed 35 pounds of good quality hay plus 5 to 6 pounds of barley or 12 pounds hay, 55 pounds of silage, and 5 to 6 pounds of barley grain. This ration is for temperatures above -20 degrees Celsius. If feeding oats, increase the grain feeding rate by 10%. The combination of hay and silage is needed to keep dry matter (DM) content at 50%.
Increasing the required weight gain per day to 1¼ pounds per day, the barley feeding rate increases to 9½ pounds per day, and hay or silage reduced accordingly.
Feeding an ionophore such as Bovatec or Rumensin improves overall feed efficiency by 5 to 7%. This improves weight gain. Barley feeding rates could be reduced to 7½ to 8 pounds. Depending on which ionophore is used, total feed intake can be expected to decline slightly.
The potential for a 20% reduction in pregnancy rates exist if body condition is not improved between calving and the start of the breeding season. Daily feed costs increase by approximately $1.25 per head, per day when increased amount of grain is fed. This extra expense is minimal compared to an animal not becoming pregnant.
For additional information on how to improve your cow’s body condition, contact Barry at 403-741-6032 or bjyaremcio@gmail.com.
“Allowing late participation in AgriStability will help more farmers manage the impacts of the many challenges they face on their farms,” said MarieClaude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “I encourage eligible farmers to take advantage of the support available to improve their situation and get back to what they do best –producing high-quality foods.”
A severe avian influenza outbreak affected many Fraser Valley poultry producers in 2022. Some B.C. crop producers have also been dealing with production losses and revenue declines due to extreme weather and abnormally cold temperatures. These challenging conditions were all factors in the decision to enable late participation in AgriStability for 2022.
“By allowing late participation in AgriStability, we will be able to offer financial support to more farmers and producers who need assistance due to factors, such as weather and disease, that were out of their control,” said Pam Alexis, B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture and Food. “We recognize the challenges our
For the past three years, AgriStability participation has been consistent in B.C., with approximately 2,100 farmers enrolled in the program for 2022, 2021 and 2020.
The Canadian Agricultural Partnership Agreement allows Canada and British Columbia to agree to late participation for AgriStability. The late participation allows B.C. farmers and producers to participate in the 2022 program as long as they pay their program fees by June 30, 2023.

Using the right seed helps lay the foundation for seeding BMP. Two major components of the right seed:
The right genetics (variety) that suits the farm’s environmental conditions and management.
High quality seed. Being aware of the germination per cent, vigor and disease to make the most of the seed lot.
Alberta Seed Guide is a valuable source to help growers select the right variety. It is an annual publication providing information on variety performances based on independent data.
Seed testing is crucial to know what you are working with when it comes to your seed lot. Seed testing provides farmers with vital information regarding seed-borne disease, TKW, germination per cent and vigor.
Welcome
Flaman Peace Country would like to introduce Nick Harter in the position of Inside Sales/Trailers at our Fairview location.
Nick is orginally from Peace River and now resides in Fairview. He was raised on a farm and is looking forward to starting a new venture with Flaman.
Testing of seed-borne disease helps limit the introduction of pathogens into a field as well as provide potential indication of the need for seed treatment. TKW and germination rate are important in seeding rate calculations. See the list of accredited seed testing labs and find the labs in your area.

‘Fly-by’ science helps at-risk birds and bats
Chelsea Coady Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program.
Many people may agree that the best approach to conserving species in our watersheds is through collaboration: working together to pool our resources, sharing ideas, knowledge, and results. We, the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP), are funding a project, led by Birds Canada, that is a prime example of this: the Motus Wildlife Tracking System, or Motus for short.
Motus is an international collaborative research network that uses automated radio telemetry to provide data on migratory bird and bat species. Birds and bats of interest are safely captured, and then affixed with a small radio transmitter before being released, and, if they fly past a Motus receiving station, the movement is recorded.
The FWCP’s mission is to compensate for fish and wildlife in watersheds impacted by BC Hydro dams, which is why funding for the program is provided by BC Hydro. The creation of reservoirs impacted wetland habitat rich in insect life for birds and bats, and removed low elevation bird breeding, and bat roosting, habitat.
The FWCP’s Peace Region is a perfect location for Motus stations because it sits on an important intersection of the Central and Western Flyways—or bird migration routes. Seven Motus stations were installed in 2021, including one at the Mugaha Marsh bird banding station run by the Mackenzie Nature Observatory— another project receiving FWCP funding. Eight new stations were

installed in 2022, so there are now 15 receivers in the region located from Prince George in the south, to Tsay Keh Dene in the north, and to Dawson Creek in the east.
Each Motus station, in ideal conditions, can detect signals up to 10 kilometres away and allow researchers to track birds and bats across thousands of kilometres. The radio tags weigh significantly less than satellite tags and can be attached to much smaller animals at a fraction of the cost. Radio tags range in mass, lifespan, and attachment method, allowing for a variety of configurations that are appropriate for various animals. The tags can be as light as 0.15 grams and last from two weeks to indefinitely, depending on their size and whether they are battery or solar-powered.
The Motus project that we’re funding in 2022-2023 involves Birds Canada working with many collaborators, including community groups, to install Motus stations at various strategic locations, including schools. Birds Canada is working to share the Motus Education Program as an additional benefit to this conservation project. This program provides education for students from grades 7 to 12 on birds, bats, and conservation. Installation of some Motus stations was undertaken in partnership with First Nations, including Tsay Keh Dene Nation, who continue to host the stations.
Data generated through Motus can help local, provincial and national conservation organizations fill important knowledge gaps, which can inform the implementation of priority projects.

Local farmland values up 6.6%
Farmland values in the Peace and Northern regions of B.C. increased by an average of 6.6% in 2022.
That’s according to the latest report from Farm Credit Canada, which tracks and compares yearly prices per acre across the country based on benchmark properties and recent sales.
According to the report, farmland in the Peace-Northern region of B.C. saw values increase to an average $2,200 per acre last year, up from $2,100 in 2021, and $1,800 in 2020.
There was still some variability across the region, however, with values ranging from $1,000 to $4,600 an acre.
“The market remained stable in the region, but values per acre were still much lower than other regions in the province,” the report said.
B.C. farmland as a whole increased 8% in 2022 after a whopping 18.1% jump in 2021.
The average value of an Okanagan farmland jumped 14.3% to $34,000 an acre in 2022, the third highest figure in the country, behind only two other B.C. locations: the South Coast ($139,000) and Vancouver Island ($63,800).
Farmland in the Kootenays jumped 33.6% in
2022, but its average per acre was still fourth highest in the province at $22,400.
The Peace-Northern region, where most of B.C.’s pastureland is located, saw the highest increase in pastureland values last year at 4.9%, up to $1,600 per acre. Pastureland throughout the region ranged from as low as $800 to as high as $6,800 per acre.
Across the border in the Alberta Peace, farmland values spiked by 13.6% to an average $2,700 per acre last year. An acre of pastureland was up 8.4% to $1,400 an acre on average.
The FCC report says changes in land values varied; the southern area of the Alberta Peace region posted increases of more than 35% while other areas remained stable.
“Areas that experienced a wet spring that negatively affected yields saw lower increases in value, while areas with above-average yields showed larger increases,” the report said.
Nationally, the average value of Canadian farmland increased by 12.8% in 2022, the largest percentage increase since 2014. It’s being attributed to strong farm income, elevated input prices and rising interest rates.

Hog market update
“Alberta hog prices were higher in 2022 than in 2021, but year-to-date, average hog prices are lower than the average price for the same period in 2022,” says Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government. “Year-to-date (January to March 10, 2023) average hog price was $1.81/ kilogram (kg), 6% lower than the average price for the same period in 2022. The average price in 2022 was $2.27/kg, which was 10.7% higher than average price for 2021 and 28.7% higher than the 5-year average.”
The average price spread between Ontario hog price and Alberta hog price was 36 cents/ kg. In 2022, the price spread narrowed to 29 cents/kg. Year-to-date (January to March 10, 2023) is at 33 cents/kg. The narrower pricing spread between Ontario and Alberta may be attributed to changes in the OlyWest 2021 contract to accommodate for a portion of cutout pricing and transportation.
“Feed costs represent 65 to 75% of the variable costs of swine production,” says Boyda. “As a result, feed costs play a major role in determining the profitability of a swine operation.”
The hog feed ratio expresses the number of bushels of number 1 feed barley that are equal in value to 100 pounds of Index 100 Live Hog. The ratio is an indicator of profitability of feeding hogs – the higher the ratio the higher the price of hogs as compared to feed costs. According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), the 10-year average hog to barley ratio for Alberta is 15.3 while the average hog to corn ratio for Ontario is 16.9, which suggests a competitive advantage in Ontario over that period.

On February 28, 2023, Statistics Canada released the hogs on farm numbers as of January 1, 2023. Total hog inventory for Alberta was 1.53 million head, down 2.5% as compared to January 2022. The breeding stock inventory decreased by 3% to 134,800 head over the same period. The largest decrease of 7.7% was reported in the 54 to 80 kilogram weight category. Boyda points out that declining hog inventories reflect the recent year’s higher production costs and volatile margins.

Protecting farms from animal diseases
The Province is investing $5 million to help protect B.C. farms from animal diseases, including avian influenza, swine fever, and foot-and-mouth disease, to help support a resilient food supply for British Columbians.
“This investment will provide B.C. farmers and ranchers with the support to plan and respond quicker and better to disease outbreaks,” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “It is important that we continue to work together and stay vigilant to protect farmers and their animals, which protects B.C.’s economy and our food security.”
The funding will help B.C. farmers plan, prepare, prevent, and mitigate for animal diseases on their farms and ranches and provide co-ordinated emergency planning and training for the livestock and poultry sector.
“Animal diseases, such as avian influenza, have a huge impact on farmers. Funding that will help us plan for and mitigate the impacts of these diseases, is very welcomed,” said Mark Siemens, president, BC Egg producers association.
“Poultry farmers particularly appreciate the fact that this funding is available to a wide variety of applicants so we can take advantage of best practices from across the animal agriculture sector.”
The funding will support industry associations with a variety of activities, including business planning, research, biosecurity measures and equipment purchases needed to respond to an animal disease outbreak.
Quick Facts!
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is the lead provincial ministry responsible for planning and preparing for animal disease outbreaks impacting the livestock and poultry sector.
The ministry is expanding its ability to support industry and respond to animal disease events with the establishment of a new emergency management branch and the hiring of additional dedicated emergency management staff.
The ministry’s Animal Health Centre, located in Abbotsford, currently handles more than 6,000 case submissions annually while diagnosing, monitoring and assisting in controlling and preventing diseases, such as avian influenza.
The Province recently announced plans to invest in a new Animal Health Centre that will ensure a more robust response to disease and enhanced testing in the future.

Run to the Hills Memorial Rally
is coming July 14 to 24
The Northern Horizon, March 31, 2023 35 Super 8 Whitecourt, AB R0011922705 220348
Get ready for an action-packed TEN DAYS at the 2023 Run to the Hills Motorcycle Rally in Two Hills, Alberta! You’ll find something for everyone at the 2023 reunion event including a Vintage Car & Bike Show, multiple bike runs, memorial service and MORE
The Province is investing more than $200 million in food security to ensure people have better access to an increased supply of affordable, local food.
“Food security in British Columbia requires an available, affordable and uninterrupted supply of nutritious food,” said Premier David Eby. “At the same time, we need targeted, effective programs that support the people and communities most impacted by rising inflation, climate events and supply-chain shocks.”
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food will invest in new and enhanced programs to strengthen B.C.’s food supply chain and expand local food production from producers to processors and from packers to retailers. The ministry will also be investing in Indigenous communities to help with the availability and cost of food and to improve local food security, particularly in remote and rural communities. The funding will also help agricultural producers and food processors grow their businesses and become more resilient to the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events.
“This historic investment will give British Columbians access to more nutritious, local and affordable food while maintaining agriculture as a key economic driver in B.C.” said Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “This funding will help strengthen our food supply chain, increase food security in our communities, and improve our resilience in the face of a changing climate.”
Additionally, grants from the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction will strengthen food banks, food distribution and food access. This includes providing food to under-served communities through trusted partners, such as FoodBanks BC and the United Way, as well as increasing the availability of fresh food in rural, Northern and Indigenous communities.

Farm rental rate survey
Since 2018, the Government of Alberta no longer consistently tracks farmland rental rates. With changes in crops that are grown, increases in both yields and commodity prices, the available figures are no longer current or relevant.
Clearwater County’s Agriculture and Community Services Department receives a high number of inquiries about local rental rates, this data is being collected to assist in information distribution to County residents.
Once completed, this data will be available to the public to allow for a better understanding on the
overall situation for producers and landlords in Clearwater County. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and the results will be available here, on our website, and distributed to our agricultural community.
The complete online survey is available below, paper copies are available at County Administrative buildings (or you can click here to download a paper copy!).
If you have any questions or issues with the survey please contact Agriculture & Community Services at 403-845-4444 or admin@clearwatercounty.ca.
