Canada gains full access to Japanese beef market

For the first time in two decades, Japan is reopening its doors to Canadian processed beef.

This accomplishment ushers in a new era for Canada and its second-largest market for beef and beef products: expanding market access for Canadian exporters – while also benefiting Japanese consumers who will have greater access to Canada’s high-quality beef products.

Dan Przybylski

The development also removes the last restrictions on Canadian beef that Japan put in place in 2003, after the discovery of a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Alberta.

Under the new Indo-Pacific Strategy, the Government committed to seizing economic opportunities for Canada by strengthening its regional partnerships, including with Japan. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency, with the support of Agriculture and Agrifood Canada, has worked tirelessly over the past few years to assert the highest production standards and quality assurance of Canadian beef in order to reopen full access in key markets, like Japan.

Japan is an important market for Canada and the world. In 2022, the Japanese market for Canadian beef and beef products had an estimated value of $518 million, largely due to Canada’s preferential access under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

This expanded market access opportunity follows another loosening of restrictions in 2019, when Japan approved imports of Canadian beef from cattle older than 30 months.

“Cattle producers are grateful for the removal of trade barriers for processed beef in Japan, our second-largest export market for beef. Our industry will continue to support global food security by providing some of the most sustainable and highest quality beef in the world. We look forward to continuing to work with the Government of Canada to further remove remaining trade barriers and expanding our trade capacity in the Indo-Pacific region,” saidNathan Phinney, President of the Canadian Cattle Association.

Proposed amendments to livestock identification and traceability

Opened on March 18, 2023 and will close on June 16, 2023.

Follow: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is proposing amendments to Part XV of the Health of Animals Regulations (Identification and Traceability) to enable a more effective and timely response to disease outbreaks and food safety issues, and improve support for disease surveillance activities.

Over the last decade, industry and government representatives have been working together on the livestock traceability file. Consultations with industry and provinces identified some gaps and opportunities to improve Canada’s livestock traceability system. Feedback received set the foundation for proposed regulatory changes. The proposed amendments are expected to strengthen Canada’s ability to respond quickly to animal

health threats and other emergencies. What we are looking to change

The regulatory proposal would address the gaps in the current livestock identification and traceability system, including: adding goats and cervids as animal species that share diseases with other regulated livestock, and therefore subject to traceability requirements shortening the time period allowed to report an event to better support an efficient response to disease outbreaks adding a requirement to provide information about the geographical location of sites where animals are located requiring the reporting of domestic movements of livestock

Why you should participate

This is an opportunity to share your views to inform changes to the regulations. The input gathered through this consultation will be used to improve the regulations, help Canada build

a robust and effective livestock traceability system, and improve the Government of Canada’s ability to respond quickly to animal health threats and other emergencies.

Supporting made-in-AB products

The Made in Alberta voluntary labeling program will help consumers easily identify Albertamade products. Alberta producers and processors will be able to use the new label on their locallymade products. The label will help shoppers quickly identify food products made in our province when choosing an item at their local farmers’ market or grocery store.

“This new voluntary label celebrates the safe, high-quality agricultural and food products that Alberta is known for here and around the globe. It will help consumers more easily identify Alberta products so they know their hard-earned dollars will stay in our province and support other Alberta families,” added Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation.

The Alberta Food Processors Association (AFPA) was selected as the program administrator through a competitive process. Producers and processors interested in using the label on their products can get more information and apply though the Made in Alberta website.

“AFPA is honoured by the government’s commitment to local food and beverage production. This program helps consumers and producers work together to easily identify the amazing products that are made right here in Alberta. By choosing a local product, you are not only helping the business but the community as a whole. Our members are proud of what they grow, produce and process and are excited to increase their local coverage in our province,” said Eric Haak, chair, Alberta Food Processors Association

“I am incredibly excited to be a part of the Made in Alberta launch. I am so proud of my province, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of my valued friends, family and business connections all within my Alberta community. I look forward to presenting my product with the Made in Alberta label and showcasing the hard work I have put into my business as an Albertan, as well as letting others know that when they support my business – they are supporting their province as well,” said Mary Burch, owner, Red House Salsa.

Participation in incomeprotection program

Peace Country Seed Grower Direct

B.C. farmers and producers can still participate in AgriStability for the 2022 farming year and have until June 30, 2023, to pay their fees and secure coverage under the program.

AgriStability is a federalprovincial-territorial program that provides support to growers with large financial declines caused by production losses, disease outbreak and increased costs or declining market conditions.

“Allowing late participation in AgriStability will help more farmers manage the impacts of the many challenges they face on their farms,” said MarieClaude Bibeau, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “I encourage eligible farmers to take advantage of the support available to improve their situation and get back to what they do best –producing high-quality foods.”

A severe avian influenza outbreak affected many Fraser Valley poultry producers in 2022. Some B.C. crop producers have also been dealing with production losses and revenue declines due to extreme weather and abnormally cold temperatures. These challenging conditions were all factors in the decision to enable late participation in AgriStability for 2022.

“By allowing late participation in AgriStability, we will be able to offer financial support to more farmers and producers who need assistance due to factors, such as weather and disease, that were out of their control,” said Pam Alexis, B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture and Food. “We recognize the challenges our

agricultural community have faced over the past year, and we encourage anyone who is eligible to retroactively sign up, so they can improve their financial situation for the coming year, while continuing to produce the food and food products we all appreciate and rely on.”

For the past three years, AgriStability participation has been consistent in B.C., with approximately 2,100 farmers enrolled in the program for 2022, 2021 and 2020.

The Canadian Agricultural Partnership Agreement allows Canada and British Columbia to agree to late participation for AgriStability. The late participation allows B.C. farmers and producers to participate in the 2022 program as long as they pay their program fees by June 30, 2023.

AgriStability offers personalized coverage for each farm based on income tax and production information.

AgriStability is a wholefarm, low-cost business riskmanagement program that helps farm operations manage large declines in net farming income. Any program payments are reduced by 20% for late participants. Program costs are shared 60% by Canada and 40% by British Columbia.

Does seeding into an existing forage

The short answer is: it depends. Through three years of establishing plots and monitoring the viability of interseeding it has been possible for the Peace River Forage Association (PRFA) of BC to increase our understanding of seeding into an existing forage stand with another forage. During the trials we were able to establish very little success in establishing forages within a forage crop both under direct seeding disc drill, broadcast seeding, broadcast seeding in conjunction with overgrazing, broadcast seeding and direct seeding in conjunction with fertilizer.

How to successfully rejuvenate a pasture or old hayfield that is starting to reduce production has a lot of risk associated with a full rejuvenation like tillage or herbicide fallow. Risks such as loss of production for one or several years, reduction topsoil function (being incorporated with subsoil), gassing off of nitrogen, soil erosion, topsoil loss because of abnormally high rainfall events in the spring and many other risks.

This project attempted to look at some new options or processes that might assist in introducing forages into an existing forage stand, thereby reducing the need for a full rejuvenation or at least extending the life of the existing forage stand. By digging deeper into this topic; using a new fine seed forage direct seeding disc drill; and incorporating practices such as overgrazing before seeding, timing of seeding, mowing, herbicide, and fertilizers; the association hoped to show that there are more reliable methods for introducing new forages to existing forage stands in comparison to the tried and unreliable broadcasting method.

If new forages were successfully added to an existing forage stand it could improve the yield and quality of the existing stand, extending the life and reducing both costs and environmental risks to the producer and the land. The risk of completely rejuvenating a forage stand has increased with climate change. With the increase in variability in of extreme weather events and the timing of critical moisture events no longer being reliable, the success of traditional rejuvenation practices has declined.

What were the successes:

1. Broadcast seeding birdsfoot trefoil in the winter into an existing over grazed horse pasture (predominately timothy, brome, and quack grass) was successful in establishing birdsfoot trefoil at greater than 50% of the plant composition.

Contributing factors to the success included:

• Seeding onto snow in December.

• The site having been severely over grazed by horses with a lot of bare ground (>50%) showing.

• Excellent moisture conditions in the spring with lots of moisture available and no grazing pressure during the May/June/July establishment timing.

• High seeding rate (>100 seeds per square foot~>11 lbs/ac).

2. Direct seeding alfalfa or timothy into a chem fallow field, previously existing cereal stubble, or timothy. The condition of the field at timing of seeding was extensively fallow soil and the introduction of either timothy or alfalfa resulted in the successful establishment of those plants in the strip that had been missed during a previous seeding of the same plants.

Contributing factors to the success include:

• Successful termination of the previously existing stand with chemicals resulting in a direct seed into ostensibly bare land.

• Excellent moisture conditions in the spring with lots of moisture available and no grazing pressure during May/June/July establishment timing.

• High seeding rate (>100 timothy seeds per square foot, equivalent to 4 lbs/ac, alfalfa at 20 lbs/ac).

3. Direct seeding and broadcast seeding into existing overgrazed pasture with foxtail barley infestation, where existing desirable plants were predominantly timothy, was only successful under the area that had livestock excluded from it for 2 years.

Contributing factors to the success include:

• Approx 40% bare ground at time of seeding.

• Exclusion of livestock grazing.

• High seeding rates 100 seeds per ft square.

What were the challenges:

1. Direct seeding with any species of forage, be it grasses, legumes, or cover crops, had limited success on all sites that had existing growing perennial forage stands. Most sites saw less than one new forage plant introduced into an already existing stand when the cooperators were hoping to have closer to 5-20 new plants. Spending $50 per acre resulted in no detectible improvement in yield or forage quality in these sites.

2. NDVI drone flights were unable to adequately detect the change in forage production if there was any. This method could be utilized to determine bare ground percent cover, as could satellite imagery over a larger scale.

3. The new app Canopea for measuring percent cover was utilized during the project and was sometimes inconsistent in estimating of percent cover if there was a large volume of litter or dead plant material. This made it essential to continue to have qualified people collecting the data.

4. The Jenquip Plate Meter, which was trialed during the project, is a new tool to Canada and is designed to measure the height of the stand and estimate percent plant cover. Limitations of this tool included mixed species stands that were difficult to estimate the percent cover using the formulas that were designed for monocultures. Extremely thin stands were not strong enough to hold the plate up and measured virtually 0 in height, limiting the comparisons that could be made.

5. Fertilizing and mowing saw virtually no advantages in the yield or quality in the interseeding sites.

6. Seeding into an existing pasture site with low production and a greater than 50% bare ground at time of seeding in the spring even with good June rains did not result in any significant changes species composition. An average of 0.1 plants per square foot were observed during the monitoring at that site. This held true over variety of grasses and legumes.

As part of the project the PRFA purchased and tested a VREDO drill to see what is possible in our region. The drill is zero till, the V-shaped disc creates a slit in the soil. Then the smooth roller closes the slit by

compacting the ground reducing 90% of soil erosion. The drill is easy to calibrate by taking out the tray that is located above the discs and flipping it over to catch the seed in a pail. The meter wheel is ground driven and 28 cranks is 1/100 of acre. The drill can seed from 2 to 30 lb/ ac. There does seem to be some limitation with low seeding rates of straight timothy.

VREDO Drill Basics

• Empty weight of the drill is 3,108 lbs.

• Requires a three-point hitch.

• Minimum 90 horsepower.

• Working width of the drill is 2.85m (9’4”).

• Transportation width is 3.00m (9’10”).

• Seeder can place the seed at depthsbetween 0-0.98 inches.

• Seed row spacing is 2.9 inches apart.

• Please contact the PRFA if you are interested to learn more about renting the drill.

Preventing Disease Transfer When Bringing New Animals into the Herd

Since the worldwide pandemic most of us have become much more aware of communicable diseases and how to limit spread almost ourselves. Most cattle producers already had a much better general understanding of disease transfer than the general population. That being said we have recently dealt with several cases of herds bringing in outside animals and about ten days later having pneumonia outbreaks in their own animals. A lot of these farms were farms we would consider high health status with relatively “closed herds”. What I mean by that is a herd that implements good vaccination strategies and does not bring in many outside animals. We do know that there truly is no “closed” herd. In this country, at some point, most herds will bring in a new bull or an orphaned calf from a neighbor or a milk cow to feed their excess twins. Bringing in these outside animals poses a high risk to your herd, but we are all going to do it at some point, so here a few pieces of advice to minimize your risk.

Committed to friendly, quality care

TOGETHER, WE CAN GIVE DOGS MORE DAYS OF PLAY

Dogs can’t tell us if they are experiencing chronic pain, they may show certain behaviours that can be signs of pain. Find out if your dog has arthritis and ask us about an antibody therapy that blocks the pain signals so they can enjoy more days of play!

Librela® enhances the quality of life for dogs living with arthritis and we are thrilled to offer Librela as an option for our clients.

The earlier dogs are diagnosed and treated, the sooner they can experience a better quality of life.

First – know where these new animals are coming from. Ask about that farm’s vaccine strategies, what this individual animal would have received and when. Even virgin yearling bull purchased from a reputable breeder but went through a bull sale at an auction mart has been exposed to a wide array of pathogens. During their brief time at the auction mart that they could bring some of these pathogens to your farm.

There is not much you can do to change what they bring but we can protect our herd by quarantining the new bull/cow/ calf for minimum two weeks before turning them out with the rest of your animals. Ideally a quarantine pen should not be

fence line with other cattle (or you might as well turn them in together) and should not share waterers. If your cows are just about to start calving and you buy some more bred cows – consider calving them in a separate area since your cows will be more susceptible to disease during calving (higher stress time in the year). If you buy calves in fall, keep the new calves separate from yours till they are all settled and the weather is good (wait till stress is low).

The next thing you can do is update the vaccines in these new animals. Vaccines work best when given to healthy animals so if feasible, give them a rest period of a week and make sure they are healthy before you vaccinate. Vaccines take about 2-3 weeks to develop a strong immune response so use them as a tool to prevent disease rather than a treatment. If the vaccine status of the new animals is unknown assume they have had nothing and update according to your herd’s vaccination program. If you do not have a vaccine program for your farm, talk to your veterinarian about developing a protocol for you. This is also a good reminder to keep your herd well vaccinated even if you do not have animals coming in very often. More often than not it seems your home herd will be the ones that get sick from new animals coming in.

Bringing in milk cows and orphaned calves are generally high risk animals so if you do bring these in, make sure to segregate them from your own animals. At minimum get a Johne’s test (fecal sample) done any milk cows (there is more Johne’s disease within dairy than beef cattle).

As we enter the mud season make sure to clean your boots/clothing any time you travel between farms knowing you could also carry disease between operations. If helping a neighbor pull a calf or visiting a farm prior to a bull sale be aware of what is on your feet. Sharing trailers between farms can also pose a risk for disease transfer.

Most producers have spent a lot of time and money creating a healthy herd and are already following these strategies but sometimes a good reminder of these simple practices can help decrease the risk of future disease outbreaks.

CHANGING FEEDING PROGRAMS

March means in like a lion and out like a lamb or in this case March started off quite nice so I hope for all those farmers having babies that the weather is nice and doesn’t go out like a lion.

My name is Patrick Drschiwiski and I am a member of the Lakeshore 4-H Club. This month has been pretty quiet since its still winter out but our club did cohost the district communication night. There were speeches, educational displays, speak and shows as well as impromptu speeches. The turnout was great and the speeches very interesting. This even takes a lot of people to make it happen. We want to thank the parents, leaders, judges and other 4-H members for coming out and supporting those who had the courage to stand up in front of a crowd and present.

The next few months will be making sure that our animals are getting the care they need as well as training. Before we know it summer will be here and so will achievement days. But before that theirs is training, washing grooming as well as so many things that need to happen. I have a white animal this year to wash and get clean so that will take a lot of soap and washing to get nice and clean. I much prefer the swine they like to play in the water and don’t need as much scrubbing.

Please remember to thank you parents and judges since it is these people who make this happen for us kids.

Thank you, Patrick Drschiwiski

Over the winter, adjustments will be made to rations. Declining feed inventories and changes in nutrient requirements from late pregnancy to a lactating ration, are two common reasons.

Quality differences between grass hay, mixed legume hay, greenfeed, silage, or grains need to be taken into account when balancing the ration for protein, energy, minerals, trace minerals, and vitamins. This can be done using a ration balancing program. How animals react to these adjustments, must also be considered.

Forage maturity and crop type influences nutrient content. Protein, energy, calcium, and magnesium vary. Protein and energy content is usually higher in feeds that contain legumes. Mixed hay or legume hays are high in calcium but low in magnesium. Grass hay, greenfeeds, and cereal or corn silages are typically deficient in calcium and magnesium. A 1:1 or 2:1 mineral is commonly used in a mixed hay ration, whereas a 3:1 or 4:1 mineral is recommended for rations that contain high amounts of cereal or grass forages.

Energy densities in cereal grains vary. Corn and wheat have the same energy content at 88% total digestible nutrients (TDN). Substituting wheat for corn is a pound for pound calculation. Barley with 83% TDN and oats with 77% TDN, requires increases in feeding rates by 10 and 20% respectfully. Changing grains should be done in a three to four step process to prevent digestive upsets. Make the switches every three to four days prevents digestive upsets.

Digestion rates vary between different grains. Wheat, triticale, and rye have the most rapid digestion. As a guideline to prevent digestive upsets, a maximum of six pounds per head per day should be fed to mature animals; and three pounds per head per day fed to 600 to 700 pound animals. Feeding other grains in addition to the wheat, triticale or rye is not a problem.

Gradual changes to a feeding program reduce the risk of digestive upsets or animals going off feed. Animals that are coming to eat when feed is delivered indicate that the transition to the new ration is going well. A normal, flat manure pat shows that the rumen is healthy. If this is not observed, increase the time between changes. It might be necessary to increase the number of steps to make the change.

“Premises Identification (PID) is a tool used to plan for, control, and prevent the spread of livestock and poultry disease, such as avian influenza or foot and mouth disease, and is crucial for the livestock industry in the event of an animal health incident,” says Dr. Keith Lehman, chief provincial veterinarian with the Alberta government. “The quicker we can locate livestock, the

more quickly and accurately we can respond. In fact, PID was used heavily in 2022 to help control the spread of avian influenza and disseminate information to poultry owners in the province and will continue to be an important tool in managing the anticipated spread this spring.”

from previous - keep your Premises Identification account up to date

“Effective emergency response and the ability to protect your animals depends on accurate information. It is important that you update your PID account when there are changes to your operation (contact information, species, and maximum capacity, etc.) or if you no longer have livestock on your premises. Inaccurate and outdated information can put your animals at risk during an emergency by delaying notification or delivering an incorrect response from emergency responders.”

The following PID account information should be reviewed regularly:

“For those who don’t have a PID account, it is free, simple to apply for and easy to update,” points out Dr. Lehman. “If livestock or poultry are in your care and control, you need to apply for a PID account and obtain at least one PID number. If you operate a commingling site, such as a boarding stable, community pasture, livestock market, feedlot or fair ground, you

are required to obtain a PID account, register all your commingling sites and provide the PID number(s) to the users of your site(s).”

Producers can review and update their information online, or by calling the Premises Identification Program Delivery team at 780-422-9167. Producers can also call 310-FARM for more information.

Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership launched April 1

The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) will officially go into effect on April 1, 2023. The federal, provincial and territorial governments collaborated in the renewal of this important five-year policy framework to ensure that there is no gap between the end of the former agreement and this new one, benefitting farmers and processors across all of Canada.

This agreement has set $1 billion in federal programs and activities, and $2.5 billion in cost-shared programs and activities funded by federal, provincial and territorial governments, up 25% from the 2018-2023 agreement.

The renewed federally funded programs to support sector growth under Sustainable CAP were launched on March 6, 2023. Details and applications are available online for AgriAssurance, AgriCompetitiveness, AgriDiversity, AgriInnovate, AgriMarketing and AgriScience.

In addition to these programs, the Sustainable CAP includes $2.5 billion in costshared programming that will be delivered by provincial and territorial governments. Bilateral agreements between the Government of Canada and the provincial and territorial governments are in the process of being finalized.

Sustainable CAP includes, among other things, a new $250 million Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program to support ecological goods and services offered by the agricultural sector.

Canadian producers will also have access to an enhanced suite of business risk management programs to help them manage significant risks that threaten the viability of their farms and are beyond their capacity to manage, including an increase of the compensation rate from 70% to 80% in AgriStability.

The Sustainable CAP will help position Canada for continued success as a global leader in sustainable agriculture, economically, environmentally and socially. It will also enable the sector to be an innovative, productive and internationally competitive so that it can continue to feed Canada and a growing global population.

“I would like to highlight the important collaborative work that allowed us to mark

the official launch of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (2023-2028). The initiatives that will be rolled out over the next five years will allow the sector to continue to be a world leader in sustainable agricultural, while also allowing farmers to stay productive and competitive so that they can ensure our food security and sustain their livelihood,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

The agriculture and agri-food value chain continues to be an economic engine driving Canada’s economy, contributing nearly $135 billion of national GDP, and responsible for more than 2 million jobs (1 in 9 jobs) in Canada.

Exports of agriculture, agri-food, fish and seafood products grew to $92.7 billion in 2022, compared to $82.4 billion in 2021.

Funding for food production in the Northwest Territories

A renewed funding partnership between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) will see an investment of $7.6 million to strengthen the competitiveness, innovation, and resiliency of the agriculture, agri‐food sector in the Northwest Territories (NWT) over the next 5

projects to NWT-based producers, processors, retailers, non-profit organizations, and governments, including Indigenous Governments and Indigenous Organizations.

The new agreement increases government investment in the agriculture and agri-food sector

trust; and climate change and the environment.

Sustainable CAP will further work to encourage greater diversity and inclusion in the sector and strengthen relationships with Indigenous Peoples.

In the NWT, the GNWT’s partnership in Sustainable CAP will enable NWT producers to access 2 key Business Risk Management programs, AgriStability and AgriInvest, designed to provide producers with protection against income and production losses and to help them manage risks that threaten the viability of their operations.

“The Sustainable Canadian Agriculture Partnership will provide innovative solutions to help ensure a dependable food supply and a more resilient and sustainable agriculture sector within communities across the Northwest Territories. We look forward to this renewed partnership so that the sector can reach its full potential and continue to contribute to Canada’s

economic growth and wellbeing,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

“The GNWT’s support for regional agriculture programs is doing more than encouraging local food production. It promotes economic development and diversity. We know that the NWT has the capacity to meet more of its own food needs. We will continue to advance actions and investments to increase the production of fresh, healthy, safe and more affordable locally-grown food choices while bringing new economic opportunities to NWT residents,” added Caroline Wawzonek, Minister of Industry Tourism and Investment

The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership is a $3.5 billion, 5-year agreement between the federal, provincial and territorial governments.

Sustainable CAP is the fifth agreement signed between the Government of Canada and the GNWT since 2003.

IF IT’S NOT IN THE NORTHERN HORIZON IS IT REALLY FOR SALE? 9036

On the road through northern Alberta

We stopped for lunch at a great dual eatery, The Forge & Smoke and the Black Smith Pub. Located at the Trading Post in Sunset Ridge in Cochrane.

Our tour then took us through some lovely landscapes, across the Brazeau Dam, past Lodgepole and Cynthia before dropping our kickstand down in Edson for the night.

The next morning we headed straight to the Galloway Station Museum, Travel Centre and Archives.

Did you know that Edson has a beloved mascot, Eddie the Squirrel?

The original cement Eddie greeted travellers for over 40 years until he retired. The new Eddie, designed by Sookum Creative Works in 2011, has a cast bronze cone and a superb airbrushed paint job.

The museum has something for everyone, so consider stopping in! You won’t regret it!

So far on our tour, the food stops have not disappointed me.

On this leg of the tour, we stopped at the Coal Branch Hotel in Robb, AB and then at the Ridge Restaurant and Lounge in Grande Cache, AB.

Our final destination for the day was Grand Prairie, AB.

We started our next day off in Grande Prairie with some wonderful discoveries.

Our first stop in Grande Prairie was the Veterans Memorial Gardens & Interpretive Centre. As a partial acreage filled with gardens, info stands and an interpretive building filled with war memorabilia, there is a lot packed into this stop.

Being a veteran myself with a high level of apathy, this was emotionally draining, so many lives lost from this region alone, my

heart pounded with pride in what has been built here. The effort and love poured into this attraction speaks volumes of those that facilitated its belongings.

For our next stop, in the words of Nir, one of the riders on the tour, Grande Prairie is “full of skeletons, and one dinosaur museum called the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum.

A small entourage of greeters and a Fire Department Firetruck with flashing lights and sirens blazing greeted us.

We took a tour of the museum’s cornucopia of skeletal remains, fossils, etc.

They also served homemade donut holes that were to die for.

Continuing, we came across a second-hand store in the middle of nowhere. The Valhalla Coop.

A hodgepodg eof collected stuff, well, everything from the 50’s to date. I’m not a collector nor a hoarder, but if you love product memories from your youth, chances are you’ll find something that strikes a cord.

New carbon tax exemption improves greenhouse grower cash flow

Eligible B.C. greenhouse growers will soon be able to obtain a point-of-sale carbon tax reduction to help them preserve their cash flow and continue growing the vegetables and plants British Columbians enjoy.

The new greenhouse carbon tax exemption will replace the Greenhouse Carbon Tax Relief Grant on April 1, 2023. It will offer eligible greenhouses an 80% carbon tax reduction on the propane or natural gas sales at the point-ofsale rather than having growers recoup those expenses through the relief grant program.

To be eligible for the reduction, commercial producers must use more than 90% of the greenhouse for growing vegetables, ornamental flowers or plants, forest seedlings or nursery plants (cannabis is not eligible), providing:

they sold more than $20,000 in eligible plants in 2022 and expect the same revenues in the

next year; and they will use natural gas or propane to heat their greenhouses or to produce carbon dioxide.

Since the carbon tax exemption will be implemented on April 1, 2023, the Greenhouse Carbon Tax Relief Grant will provide rebates to offset the carbon tax paid by the greenhouse and floriculture industry between January and March 31, 2023.

Quick Facts:

The greenhouse carbon tax exemption will

provide eligible greenhouse operations with an 80% exemption to carbon tax, which will be implemented on April 1, 2023, by the Ministry of Finance.

Fuel sellers will develop and implement their own point-of-sale processing systems.

Greenhouse growers supply communities with fresh vegetables, such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, for about 10 months of the year and are a key contributor to B.C.’s food security and the provincial economy.

B.C.’s floriculture and nursery industries grow approximately 80 million greenhouse flowers and 50 million potted plants per year.

There is new federal support for 45 new projects related to adopting more efficient grain drying technology by farmers across Canada.

With this investment of up to more than $22.2 million through the Agricultural Clean Technology Program – Adoption Stream, the Program has now supported 99 grain dryer projects across the country, representing a total of more than $37.1 million.

With $50 million set aside for the purchase and installation of more efficient grain dryers and $10 million set aside for fuel switching initiatives, this program is already helping hundreds of farmers to adopt clean technologies that will power their farms with cleaner energy.

For example, Geerts Farms Ltd., a 26,000-acre family operated producer of canola, wheat and oats in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, is receiving up to $2 million to purchase and install a new grain dryer and biomass boiler that is powered by locally sourced wood waste. As a result, the use of propane in the drying process will be eliminated completely.

The Government of Canada continues to invest in research, development and adoption of clean technology to help the agriculture sector support a lowcarbon economy, while feeding a growing population.

Our goal is to help the Canadian agricultural sector innovate and adopt clean technologies. This investment in more efficient grain drying technology will help to reduce the sector’s greenhouse gas emissions and leverage technology to be more resilient to climate change,” said MarieClaude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

As part of the Strengthened Climate Plan and the Emissions Reduction Plan, the Government of Canada has committed over $1.5 billion to accelerate the agricultural sector’s progress on reducing emissions and to remain a global leader in sustainable agriculture. This includes $495.7 million for the Agricultural Clean Technology (ACT) Program.

As of March 29, 2023, 248 projects under the ACT Program have been announced, totalling up to more than $95 million.
