Wonowon 4-H Club report

Howdy Y’all! I hope that everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather and enjoyed spring break!

Sara and I have been spending as much time with the 4-H animals as we can, petting them and doing stuff with the halters. They are growing very good and they are all getting pretty quiet, they are all doing very well. We are scratching them as well, my steer is still a bit touchy when it comes to being stretched but he is doing very well and he has really calmed down.

District Commutations was on March 3, 2023 was great! It was very nice to see some people that I haven’t seen in a while. I also had fun and I hope that everyone else that was there did too. A huge Thank you to all the parents, 4-H’ers and supporters of 4-H that put so much work into making District Communications happen. Also a very big thank you to all the Judges of this event, without you all it wouldn’t have been possible and I want you all to know how much we appreciated it.

I would also like to tell everyone that they all did very well with their communications, so great

job everyone. I have decided not to go and compete at Regional Communications this year. I hope that others take the chance to take their presentations to the next level. I also hope that everyone has a good time at Regional and good luck.

Club Meeting

We had a Club meeting not too long ago and we talked about our barn decorations and what we are doing for it. We also talked about everyone’s 4-H animals and how they are doing. I am very proud of everyone for how well, everyone is doing on their projects.

WEST COUNTY 4-H MEMBERS GIVE BACK

30th Annual Delwyn Postman Donation Steer

The Donation Steer initiative originated as an idea of past Valhalla club leader, Delwyn Postman, who had been seeking a way for the members to give thanks to the community for years of support. Tragically, in November of 1992, Delwyn was killed in a motor vehicle accident on his way to the meeting where he was planning to present his idea. In his memory, 4-H members and fellow leaders have continued on with the program ever since. Valhalla and Beaverlodge 4-H Clubs are proud to have raised over $250,000 and donated to over 65 charities during this time.

“This year’s steer was purchased by GP 4-H Multi-Club and raised by the Boyd Family. There will be 2 prize draws, each for a side of beef, cut and wrapped. Cutting and wrapping has been donated by the Beaverlodge Butcher Shop. This year, the money raised will be going to Fight for Paizley & Bentley Welch (Nephrotic Syndrome Kidney Disease), S.T.A.R.S. and Special Olympics Alberta (Grande Prairie).

The draw will take place on Monday, May 29th. Tickets are $10.00 each and are available from any member of the Beaverlodge 4-H Beef Club, the Grande Prairie 4-H Multi-Club, or from Joanne Hotte (780-831-8442).

If you require more information, or have questions, please contact club leaders, Sandra Petherbridge at 780-830-6864 (Beaverlodge) or Janet Pratt at 780-831-7895 (Grande Prairie)

Supporting made-in-Alberta products

The Made in Alberta voluntary labeling program will help consumers easily identify Alberta-made products. Alberta producers and processors will be able to use the new label on their locally-made products. The label will help shoppers quickly identify food products made in our province when choosing an item at their local farmers’ market or grocery store.

“This new voluntary label celebrates the safe, high-quality agricultural and food products that Alberta is known for here and around the globe. It will help consumers more easily identify Alberta products so they know their hard-earned dollars will stay in our province and support other Alberta families,” says Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation

The Alberta Food Processors Association (AFPA) was selected as the program administrator through a competitive process. Producers and processors interested in using the label on their products can get more information and apply though the Made in Alberta website.

“AFPA is honoured by the government’s

commitment to local food and beverage production. This program helps consumers and producers work together to easily identify the amazing products that are made right here in Alberta. By choosing a local product, you are not only helping the business but the community as a whole. Our members are proud of what they grow, produce and process and are excited to increase their local coverage in our province,” adds Eric Haak, chair, Alberta Food Processors Association

“I am incredibly excited to be a part of the Made in Alberta launch. I am so proud of my province, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of my valued friends, family and business connections all within my Alberta community. I look forward to presenting my product with the Made in Alberta label and showcasing the hard work I have put into my business as an Albertan, as well as letting others know that when they support my business – they are supporting their province as well,” says Mary Burch, owner, Red House Salsa

Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership launches in April

The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) will officially go into effect on April 1, 2023. The federal, provincial and territorial governments collaborated in the renewal of this important five-year policy framework to ensure that there is no gap between the end of the former agreement and this new one, benefitting farmers and processors across all of Canada.

This agreement has set $1 billion in federal programs and activities, and $2.5 billion in costshared programs and activities funded by federal, provincial and territorial governments, up 25% from the 2018-2023 agreement.

The renewed federally funded programs to support sector growth under Sustainable CAP were launched on March 6, 2023. Details and applications are available online for AgriAssurance, AgriCompetitiveness, AgriDiversity, AgriInnovate, AgriMarketing and AgriScience.

In addition to these programs,

and territorial governments. Bilateral agreements between the Government of Canada and the provincial and territorial governments are in the process of being finalized.

Sustainable CAP includes, among other things, a new $250 million Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program to support ecological goods and services offered by the agricultural sector.

Canadian producers will also have access to an enhanced suite of business risk management programs to help them manage significant risks that threaten the viability of their farms and are beyond their capacity to manage, including an increase of the compensation rate from 70% to 80% in AgriStability.

The Sustainable CAP will help position Canada for continued success as a global leader in sustainable agriculture, economically, environmentally and socially. It will also enable the sector to be an innovative,

global population.

Federal, provincial and territorial governments consulted with a wide range of stakeholders, including producers, processors, Indigenous communities, women, youth, and small and emerging

sectors to ensure Sustainable CAP was focused on the issues that matter most to them.

The agriculture and agri-food value chain continues to be an economic engine driving Canada’s economy, contributing nearly $135 billion of national GDP, and responsible for more than 2 million jobs (1 in 9 jobs) in Canada.

Exports of agriculture, agri-food, fish and seafood products grew to $92.7 billion in 2022, compared to $82.4 billion in 2021.

Budget 2023 investments to strengthen food security

Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, highlighted Budget 2023 investments that will strengthen food security in local communities and make life more affordable while building a healthy future.

Budget 2023 proposes to provide $10 million in 2023-24 to top up the Local Food Infrastructure Fund (LFIF) to strengthen food security in communities across Canada. This new phase of the LFIF will be launched shortly.

Minister Bibeau and MP Chatel also met with agriculture and food security stakeholders during a roundtable in Gracefield. Minister Bibeau also went to Brownsburg-Chatham, accompanied by Stéphane Lauzon, MP for Argenteuil – La Petite-Nation, to visit the Argenteuil MRC community agriculture project.

The LFIF is a $70-million federal government initiative that supports not-forprofit organizations and community-led efforts in strengthening local food systems to improve food security. Since it first launched in August 2019, the LFIF has committed $55.4 million to support over 897 vital food security projects across Canada. Of this total, 188 projects were in Indigenous communities, including community gardens and kitchens, refrigerated trucks and storage units for donated food and greenhouses.

Budget 2023 investments will support many Canadians in reducing their financial burdens and help them build a healthy and prosperous future.

Sunterra Greenhouse, LCC researchers make discoveries to support the greenhouse industry

New research findings will help greenhouse producers make informed decisions for growing more produce while saving money. The project, run collaboratively by researchers from Lethbridge College’s Centre for Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CARIE) and the grow team at Sunterra Greenhouse, tested novel varieties of strawberries and tomatoes under diverse greenhouse growing conditions.

Funded by Results Driven Agriculture Research (RDAR), the $780,0000 project explored numerous techniques and technologies for controlledenvironment agriculture. Researchers evaluated the efficiency of growing strawberries and tomatoes under different types of greenhouse roofs, tested a variety of growing media, applied different types of supplemental lights and conditions and explored the impact of plant density. The results of the pre-commercial trials provided results that will help Sunterra and other greenhouse producers make informed choices for greenhouse construction, planting and crop management.

“Offering pre-commercial validation services is one way our research teams directly help industry save money and time in their commercial operations,” says Megan Shapka, Lethbridge College Director of Applied Research Operations.

“By collaborating with Sunterra Greenhouse, we were able to focus on growing conditions that mattered most to their operation and provide research findings that help them make informed business decisions. These findings will also support and help develop the larger Alberta greenhouse industry, which we believe has huge potential in our province.”

The trials took place at the college’s Research and Production Greenhouse in Brooks, Alta. The facility provides a unique opportunity to test growing conditions under both a glass greenhouse roof and a double-layer polyethylene roof. Both tomatoes and strawberries performed better under a glass roof.

The study also demonstrated that using standard industrial-use High Bay LED lights produced similar results to more expensive horticultural LED lights. They also used less energy than industry standard HPS horticulture lights. As well, the researchers found that growing 10 plants per linear metre instead of eight did not result in a significantly higher yield.

Supporting sustainability in agriculture

In Alberta, the partnership represents $508 million in funding over five years that will provide grants to programs that support the needs of Alberta’s agriculture and agri-food sector.

Alberta’s programs will aim to create new jobs and spur growth in the agriculture sector by supporting value-added processing competitiveness, attracting new investment and expanding irrigation capacity that will boost crop production.

“The new Sustainable CAP provides flexibility to deliver programs that will help producers grow their business and improve productivity while addressing the unique challenges of farming in Alberta. Alberta’s producers are among the best in the world when it comes to sustainable practices, and we will continue to support their efforts to feed the world while protecting the environment for generations to come,” said Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation.

“The Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership is an ambitious way forward while we collaborate to ensure economic, environmental and social success for the sector. This historic investment will help producers and processors in Alberta to innovate, to grow, to prosper and to be competitive,” added Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

The programs will also continue protecting plant and animal health and animal welfare, managing risks to Alberta’s natural resources and investing in producer-led agriculture research.

Producers also have access to an enhanced suite of business risk management programs to help them manage significant risks that threaten the viability of their farms and are beyond their capacity to manage

AFC announces $11.49 million for 39 ag research projects

39 research projects have been awarded $11.49 million in funding via the Agriculture Funding Consortium (AFC). The AFC is a body comprised of 18 agricultural organizations that leverage and coordinate funding to support sustainability, diversification and long-term growth for agriculture and the food industry in Western Canada.

“This funding will have a significant impact on Alberta’s agriculture industry and directly benefit Alberta’s producers and processors,” said Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation. “It will benefit multiple sectors in every corner of the province, from livestock producers in the north to crop growers and food processors in the south. We share the AFC’s commitment to sustainability, diversification and long-term growth for the agriculture and food industry.”

The $11.49 million investment, of which $7 million comes from RDAR, will support targeted research projects promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing productivity, profitability, and competitiveness across Alberta’s agriculture industry.

“RDAR is proud to be an AFC Member,” said Clinton Dobson, Executive Director, Research of RDAR. “While RDAR directs funding to support research across all agricultural commodity areas, the AFC supports research funding to target specific areas of primary agriculture and foster sustainability,

Ag Flex Grain Bags

diversification, and long-term growth of agriculture and the food industry in Western Canada”.

The 18 agriculture organizations of the AFC provide coordinated funding for Research and Innovation projects for agriculture and the food industry in Western Canada. With member representation inclusive of the major Alberta commodity groups, investment in AFC research priorities ensures funded research projects match the needs demanded by industry, ensuring the sector remains competitive.

“The AFC brings together many of western Canada’s producer organizations focused on funding research,” said Wayne Thompson,

WGRF Executive Director. “WGRF is pleased to be funding seven crop research projects of importance to farmers for more than $1.6 million. AFC’s approach to funding agriculture research makes it easy to collaborate and advance producers’ research priorities and reach across provincial borders to partners with similar research priorities”.

“Alberta Innovates is pleased to be a partner in the AFC, providing coordinated and collaborative funding to advance agricultural knowledge across Alberta and Western Canada,” said Laura Kilcrease, CEO of Alberta Innovates. “We’re improving sustainability and diversification to create long-term growth for agriculture and the food industry. Innovative technologies are changing modern farming, and Alberta Innovates is leading the way by accelerating this innovation, from discovery to use. That’s not only good for producers, but for all Albertans, who rely on a dependable food supply which can adapt to changing conditions.”

This investment in these 39 projects will ensure that the latest research is applied to research priorities that directly impact Alberta Agriculture commodities such as livestock (bees, beef, dairy, pork, poultry); crops (wheat, canola, oats, potatoes); and soil health.

CropChoice$ updated for 2023; finalize your plans now

“This is the time of the year to be finalizing 2023 crop plans,” says Emmanuel Anum Laate, senior crop economist with the Alberta government. “With many crops to choose from based on soil fertility, moisture, prices and margins, planning is important.”

CropChoice$ can help producers

CropChoice$ helps users adjust their individual crop costs and evaluate various risk management strategies such as changing the crop mix, buying crop insurance, and negotiating land rental agreements. It calculates the expected margins for different cropping scenarios as well as the probabilities of achieving those

costs covering up to 40 dryland and irrigated crops depending on location.

“CropChoice$ recognizes that future crop yields and prices cannot be known precisely,” Laate explains. “To reflect this, users enter worst, best and most likely values for yields and prices. Varying yield and price information based on individual expectations will give a clearer and more accurate forecast than traditional linear budgets.”

He adds that the user’s inputs for expected prices and yields in CropChoice$ help forecast potential gross margins and profitability expectations for several crop plans.

“It is a very easy program to set up and use, and the manual itself is an excellent resource for understanding the program. Once it is downloaded, double click on the icon, choose ‘start’ from the welcome screen and get ready to create and compare crop plans.”

These updates support Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation’s

commitment of risk management decision tools for the crop industry.

Planning process for North Peace Leisure Facility moving forward

The planning process for a new aquatics and recreation facility to serve the North Peace is nearing a critical milestone. The Peace River Regional District (Areas B and C), the City of Fort St. John and the District of Taylor are working together to explore options for the proposed North Peace Leisure Facility. A feasibility study that identifies the best opportunities to replace the aging North Peace Leisure Pool is nearing completion and is expected to be put before elected officials for consideration soon.

Area D Community Meetings

Residents of Electoral Area D are encouraged to attend a community meeting to discuss their priorities with Director Leonard Hiebert.

The completed feasibility study will include recommendations on a wide variety of issues including what features could be included in the building, estimated construction cost, proposed location, and the business case for a new facility including some of the operating costs and revenue projections.

No final decisions on project scope or other major considerations have been made at this point. If a decision is made to move forward with a project, voters would have to approve any borrowing required to build the new facility through a referendum.

The planning process for a new facility began in 2018 but was paused due to COVID-19 pandemic challenges. The process got back on track in 2022 with a new round of public consultation and re-launch of the feasibility study development. The feasibility study will balance community input with cost, affordability, and other considerations in recommending what could be included in the facility. To learn more about the planning process for the project and the community input to date visit: haveyoursay.prrd.bc.ca/.

The North Peace Leisure Facility (NPLF) Replacement Steering Committee, which includes elected representatives from the PRRD Board and Fort St. John and Taylor Councils, is meeting regularly to support the completion of the feasibility study and ensure resident needs are addressed in proposed recommendations.

When the feasibility report and related recommendations are complete, they will first be reviewed by the Steering Committee, and if supported, will be presented to the PRRD Board and the Fort St. John and Taylor Councils for consideration and provisional approval. Elected officials would then determine the process and timeline to seek approval from voters in the affected communities to borrow the funds needed to pay for the project.

Alberta road trip and adventures continues

We stopped for lunch at a great dual eatery, The Forge & Smoke and the Black Smith Pub. Located at the Trading Post in Sunset Ridge in Cochrane.

Our tour then took us through some lovely landscapes, across the Brazeau Dam, past Lodgepole and Cynthia before dropping our kickstand down in Edson for the night.

The next morning we headed straight to the Galloway Station Museum, Travel Centre and Archives. Did you know that Edson has a beloved mascot, Eddie the Squirrel?

The original cement Eddie greeted travellers for over 40 years until he retired. The new Eddie, designed by Sookum Creative Works in 2011, has a cast bronze cone and a superb airbrushed paint job.

The museum has something for everyone, so consider stopping in! You won’t regret it

So far on our tour, the food stops have not disappointed me.

On this leg of the tour, we stopped at the Coal Branch Hotel in Robb, AB and then at the Ridge Restaurant and Lounge in Grande Cache, AB.

Our final destination for the day was Grand Prairie, AB.

On the other side of the river, we were gifted with some amazing newly paved roads that were fast and winding, up and down, and worth all the “straight” ruler-like roads from the hours prior.

We ended up in Grimshaw, ending

the evening with dinner at Norms Pizzazz.

We closed the place, being the only remaining diners since walking in 15 minutes before they closed. The economic punch to the cash register was obviously a blessing, we were treated with care and gratitude in spite of being here at the end of the day.

First stop the following day was fuel. Then off to Peace River Museum, Archives and Mackenzie Centre. Question: Is the Peace River peaceful?

From the geological creation of the area, its rich aboriginal heritage, the fur trade and the evolution of the settlement into the Town of Peace River, you owe it to yourself to check it out.

Such skilled artisans as we call them today, to the taxidermy, display setups etc., if you are going to align with something somewhere, chances are it will be here. You will gush history unlike what you’ve learnt in school.

Amazing!

Lac Cardinal Regional Pioneer Museum represents life in the 1920s to 1940s.

Everything is furnished, the houses, hall, bakery, municipal office, church, the blacksmith’s forge.

This was an awesome stop. It was wheelchair friendly, there were clean public washrooms, guided tours were given, there was a gift shop, and you could camp there.

The grounds reminded me of the Waltons TV show when the first modern vehicles were used in the series. I could imagine John Boy willing up to the fuel pump in that old pickup truck and asking Ike Godsey for a dollar of gas.

Our next stop was in Manning, the Battle River Pioneer Museum.

Outside, you see old buildings in front of a steel warehouse facility. But looks can be deceiving.

Besides, the main building there is a log cabin, post office, Anglican Church, machine sheds, a blacksmith shop and a windmill.

There are many medications available to treat sick newborn calves. These products are used with the guidance of a veterinarian. A good practice to follow. Supplements or specialty products are also available for on farm use. Some

A new vitamin and selenium supplement came onto the market in November of 2022, and is registered with the CFIA. This treatment must be used under the direction of a veterinarian. The product provides Vitamins A, D, E, B12, D3, and selenium. Recommended for calves that are not thriving shortly after birth. Scientifically proven to be an effective treatment. Helpful to resolve the immediate problem.

Instead of treating an illness or problem, it is less stressful on both the animal and owner for calves to be born healthy and vigorous. The health status of a newborn calf is directly related to the nutrition program of the dam. For example, a cow or heifer develops colostrum 4 to 8 weeks prior to calving. It is the first milk that provides passive immunity and nutrients to the calf. A thin cow develops only half of short term immunoglobulins (IgM) compared to a cow in good condition. Without adequate colostrum, more calf health problems usually occur within 4 to 6 weeks of birth.

It can take sixty to ninety days of supplementation to improve the nutritional status of an animal from being deficient to good or optimal levels. Usually, if one mineral or trace mineral is deficient, others can also be deficient. A balanced nutrition program is needed.

Feeding a mineral program one or two months prior to calving does not provide optimum nutrition to both the cow and unborn calf. A program should be developed and in place prior to the middle of the second trimester. This alleviates many of the problems associated with calving, calf health, and rebreeding.

UPCOMING AUCTIONS: Online sale only on behalf of Marlin Brown in Fort Nelson, BC on June 1. Live onsite and online bidding on behalf of Frank & Ann Klassen in Altona, BC on June 10. Greenehouse auction on behalf of Linda Greene in Farmington, BC on June 17th.

Treating an illness or problem with a medication or supplement is solving one problem. The calf that is not thriving at birth can face many other illnesses within the first few months of life. Good nutrition is not a guarantee for healthy calves but it is a strong preventative measure.

Minister on 50th ann. of the ALR in BC

Pam Alexis, Minister of Agriculture and Food, has issued the following statement in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR):

“Fifty years ago, British Columbians had the vision to protect our province’s food security by establishing the Agricultural Land Reserve and it has never been more important than it is today. We depend on the ALR for the food on our tables and we depend on it to support farming families and businesses in communities all over our province.

“The ALR was formed in 1973 by people who saw the need and the value of preserving farmland for food production. That need hasn’t changed. Today’s farmers use the land differently than the generations before them did. They have technology at their fingertips and manage their farms from phones and fields.

“That’s why our government will continue to work with farmers to support food production and protect the valuable agricultural land in the

ALR. Farmers who work on the ALR provide healthy, local and sustainably grown food for British Columbians in every part of our province.

“I join British Columbians in celebrating the healthy, nutritious food the ALR has provided for plates all over our province and encourage all to ‘Buy BC’ to help build a strong and resilient food system in British Columbia. Happy 50th anniversary to the ALR!”

Beatton Provincial Park, BC

Discover The Peace Country

You can experience beautiful sunsets at Beatton Provincial Park located only a short distance northwest of the City of Fort St John and another 13km north of Highway 97.

Beatton Provincial Park is located on the northeast shores of Charlie Lake and offers beautiful scenery, boat launch and 39 unserviced campsites with 33 of them reservable. Many people take to the water for a swim or enjoy the scenery along the hiking trails. Trail maps are posted at the trailhead and major junctions.

When you get your boat on the water you are looking for the perfect fishing spot to catch Walleye, Northern Pike and Yellow Perch, the most popular species of Charlie Lake. This park is a year-round facility with swimming, fishing and hiking during the summer months and offers excellent winter recreation opportunities with over 15km of groomed cross-country skiing trails

designed for beginner, intermediate or advanced skier.

Next to the shelter at Beatton Provincial Park and near the swimming area is a marker that indicates the parked was established in 1934. It later became a Provincial park in 1982. The 320 hectare park is a popular retreat located in the Peace Country.

At Dunvegan Provincial Park and Historic Site there is plenty of green space to relax with family and friends and enjoy a picnic, get some exercise and experience what life was like for many early settlers.

This is the site of one of Alberta’s earliest fur trading posts and missionary centres dating back to 1805.

Archibald Norman MacLeod established a trading post naming it Fort Dunvegan after his family’s ancestral castle in Scotland. The park, located 26 km south of Fairview, normally has tours during the summer that include the 1867 St. Charles Mission Church, and the 1879 Hudson’s Bay Company Factor’s House.

A ferry was used to cross the Peace River until 1960 when the longest suspension bridge in Alberta was built.

Dunvegan Provincial Park has 65 campsites, with electrial hook-ups. Reservable May 18-Oct 9. There is a large day use and picnic area that includes shelter, firepits and playground.

The Maples day-use area, located 1/2 km west of the bridge, has another playground and more hiking trails. The Manitoba maples mark the site of St. Saviours Mission to the Beaver Indians established in 1879.

For hundreds of years, the valley has provided excellent fruits and vegetables which are now available at the Market Gardens which is located a short distance east of the campground.
