Will UPOV 91 affect your operation? BY KEVIN HURSH Courtesy of AgriSuccess With the passage of Bill C-18, Canada joined most other developed nations in moving to UPOV 91 (International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants), a 1991 protocol that provides extended plant breeders’ rights protection for new crop varieties. Most farm organizations have expressed strong support for the measures, believing they will lead to more investment in Canadian plant breeding, the development of improved varieties and the introduction of varieties into Canada from other countries. Farmer’s privilege applies Producers have repeatedly been assured that the right to reuse seed is protected through what is called “farmer’s privilege.” However, there are changes farmers should know about. As well, some producers could use a reminder of the current rules. For varieties protected by plant breeders’ rights, you can save seed and use it on your own farm. But, it’s illegal to provide the seed to another grower. Producers are sometimes unaware they are breaking the law because they don’t keep track of which varieties have rights protection. Check seed guides to make sure. Buyer beware? UPOV 91 applies to varieties submitted for plant breeders’ rights in Canada after February 27, 2015, and

it tightens the rules somewhat. Previously, the seller was responsible for ensuring the legality of a seed sale. Now, the buyer shares this responsibility. As well, seed cleaners have a responsibility to ensure that farmers bringing in product for cleaning have obtained that seed legally, and it isn’t being cleaned for sale to another producer. Growth of hybrid varieties And, as in the past, the ability to save your own seed isn’t absolute. Crops such as corn and canola are dominated by hybrid varieties where you wouldn’t want to save your seed anyway because subsequent generations will be inferior. More crops will go the hybrid route in the years ahead. Beyond that, some production contracts require everything to be delivered, with nothing saved for seed. Some worry that UPOV 91 opens up the potential for endpoint royalties where money is deducted from the final sale of the commodity and channeled back to the breeder. This is possible with the new rules, but industry insiders say it would only happen after extensive consultation and most believe it is years away – if it happens at all. The Canadian Seed Trade Association launched PBRfacts.ca to inform all stakeholders of the new requirements. The site includes the logos that identify whether varieties fall under the previous rules or the new UPOV 91 requirements.
Alleged lawn mower thief nabbed in Fort St. John jonny wakefield Alaska Highway News
Police have arrested a man they believe stole three lawn mowers from the John Deere dealership in Dawson Creek last week. The accused was taken into custody by Fort St. John RCMP last week on separate stolen property charges. The man and an accomplice are alleged to have broken into the tractor dealership on Oct. 13, and attempted another breakin at Dawson Creek Co-op Agri Centre the same night. The mowers, valued at $7,500, remain at large. “Police were unable to recover the stolen lawn mowers, which are believed to have been transported to Alberta,” a release states.

UFA and CHS Canada partner in Peace Country joint venture Sexsmith, Alberta — October 14, 2015 - UFA and CHS Canada today announce they will form a joint venture designed to bring enhanced value to ag producers in the Peace Country, Alberta’s number two crop producing region and the province’s largest producer of canola. The partnership will serve UFA members and customers with a comprehensive offering of crop inputs (seed, crop chemical and access to dry and NH3 fertilizer), agronomic expertise, and a consulting/advisory model delivered locally. “The new venture brings new capabilities to both organizations and will position us more competitively in the marketplace. Ultimately this will help farmers in the Peace Country grow and prosper,” said Carol Kitchen, chief executive officer of UFA. “Since coming to Alberta I have travelled all across the province and have observed firsthand the unique potential of the Peace Country. This regional partnership will allow us to support agricultural investment and enhance the services we provide here.” Already under construction, the first physical indication of this partnership is a new fertilizer plant located south of Sexsmith in the RedTail Business Park. This high-speed blending facility will provide UFA members and customers in the Peace Country with local access to a range of dry fertilizer products. This latest investment in expanding capabilities in the region is expected to be completed in early 2016. “CHS is always looking for partnerships that will enhance our efforts to help farmers grow their operations,” said Lynden Johnson, executive vice president, CHS Country Operations. “This new venture blends the best of both organizations to strengthen what our local experts with global connections can deliver for producers in Peace Country.” Operating as an independent organization under the name, Bridgeland, the joint venture will be governed by a board consisting of two leaders from UFA and two from CHS.

Farmers need to beware of sun damage “You need to take some preventative action every day, even when it’s cloudy.” Claveau recommends applying sun screen on exposed body parts once in the morning before heading outdoors, and again at lunch. He also recommends wearing a hat and not a baseball cap, which doesn’t provide protection for the ears or neck. It’s also critical to stay out of the sun whenever possible, especially during peak sun hours.
What to watch for Moles, spots or growths on your skin are usually
harmless, but not always. Look for these warning signs: symmetry The two halves don’t match, if you imagine drawing a line through the centre. orders The edges are uneven, scalloped or notched. olours There are many shades (brown, red, white, blue or black). iameter The diameter is six millimetres (about the size of a pencil eraser) or greater. volution There’s been a change in size, shape, colour or height, or a new symptom has developed such as crusting, bleeding or itching. Cancers that develop later in life, on areas of skin often exposed to the sun, are most likely a type of slow-growing carcinoma that can be removed by surgery. It’s important to examine your skin regularly and see a doctor right away if you notice any symptoms.

And consult a physician if a painful lesion or a mole appears on sunexposed skin, or even on areas that rarely see the light of day. “If it’s been there a couple of months, you should consider it to be a cancer until proven otherwise,” Claveau says. By Mark Cardwell Courtesy of AgriSuccess Dr. Joel Claveau wishes he knew far fewer farmers. That sounds strange when you consider agricultural producers represent the biggest and fastest-growing group of clients at his busy private clinic in Quebec City. But Claveau is a dermatologist specializing in skin cancers. He is notably a world-class clinician and researcher in malignant melanoma – the type that is more likely to spread inside the human body and kill. Claveau says that in his practice, he rarely sees a farmer over 50 who hasn’t had a brush with skin cancer. “People who minimize or dismiss the health risks of sun exposure on farmers, construction workers and others who spend much of their lives outdoors are just burying their heads in the sand,” he says. About 80,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year. The vast majority will have less serious skin cancers like basal and squamous cell carcinomas that can safely be treated at a dermatologist’s office. But some 6,500 new cases of the more rare and deadly melanoma will also be diagnosed. They will result in about 1,600 deaths from leukemia and other cancers. But it doesn’t have to be that way. According to Claveau, most skin cancers result from the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, which lead to genetic mutations that cause cells to grow out of control. Fair-skinned people are especially at risk. “There is a cumulative effect,” Claveau explains. Farmers who seem quite healthy at 50 can display symptoms of skin cancer by age 70, he says.

MILLING OATS
Grains came through mid-October with corn and wheat staying relatively unchanged-to-lower while the oilseeds complex saw a bit of a tick up. Overall, the market has been weighing in El Nino reports, more North American harvest progression, and the dryness of some areas around the world. Some headlines to watch include scorching temperatures continuing to downgrade the crop size in Australia while limited fund money inflow equates to limited continuous gains in the complex. Add in some dryness in Brazil that is grabbing headlines as farmers plant soybeans, there are some catalysts out there holding up markets, but not much to push the fanfare back down either. Thanks to back-to-back dry years in India, pulse crop demand continues to remain strong, specifically in the lentils and yellow peas markets. Prices only briefly pulled back in the last few weeks, a time when plentiful supplies usually puts downside pressure on the market. Nevertheless, as Chuck Penner from LeftField Commodities points out, deliveries of on-farm stocks are significantly above the 5-year average, and even last year’s aggressive pace. Specifically on peas, 34%, or 1.16 million tonnes, have been shipped out in the first 8 weeks of the marketing year, above last year’s 28% at this time and the 5-year average of just 18%. Comparably, for lentils, 13% of on-farm product has been delivered, well above the 4% seen the last 2 years! This all likely adds up to more selling opportunities down the road as international demand looks to remain strong, but you should not be dead set on a specific number. There is some growing groupthink that Russia’s wheat export taxes might push more farmers away from planting the cereal, and instead switch over to something like corn or barley. Wheat has habitually been the main cash crop in Russia (this year: 60.8 million tonnes of wheat, 17.4 million tonnes of barley, and 12.1 million tonnes of corn, per SovEcon), but as Andrey Sizov of SovEcon points out, “if the tax stays, it could result in a noticeable decline of farmers’ margins and a gradual decline in production and exports.” This would likely be a welcome scenario to the rest of the world today, given the record supply of wheat available, especially in the EU, and specifically the UK where available wheat for export at the end of this year should come in at 3.62 million tonnes, 553% higher than what was the available 2 years ago! Let’s keep in mind though that this isn’t going to change in just 1 or 2 years (it took Ukraine 6 years to go from 7.4 million tonnes of corn output to 30.9 million in 2013) so don’t be like baseball players who celebrate like they won a world championship after every series win (go Jays)! Yes, the potential is there, but the fanfare surrounding it may be a bit early. More than anything, our hearts go out to Bott family and the entire community of Withrow, AB this week who tragically lost 3 little girls in a farm accident. As another Harvest season winds down, reflection can be commonplace. Farming is an incredible, rewarding occupation, but there are omni-present dangers that we can easily take for granted because it’s around us all the time. Educating the next generation is a responsibility but often overlooked – take some time to review that this winter. Some members of the Doe River Women’s Institute were enjoying themselves making 50 pies for their annual turkey supper, held this year on Oct. 4. Thanks to the 240 people who attended, good donations will be made to local charities this year. Costs were kept reasonable because of the kind donations of vegetables towards the meal. Without these donations of food and the help of other volunteers, an event like this would not be possible.

HOW WE DO IT
Mouse Free’s unique formula stops the entry of mice into your RV. We stop mice and other pests from entering through the small holes and cavities on the under side of your motorhome or trailer.

Simply put, a lubricating non drip coating scented with 100% natural essential oils is applied to the entire undercarriage of your RV. This provides two very unique ways to repel mice: 1 Mice have a very acute sense of smell. The scent of natural essential oils are overwhelming to mice, and drive them away. 2 The non drip oily coating is much too slippery to travel across. The coating is impassable by any mouse, squirrel, or insect even ants! If it doesn’t have wings, we keep them out!

CowBytes Q & A coming to the Northern Horizon While attending the Peace Country Beef & Forage Association’s Ration Balancing Workshop earlier this month in Savanna I had the opportunity to meet Barry Yaremcio, Beef & Forage Specialist for Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. Barry did a presentation on Alberta Agriculture’s easy-to-use beef ration balancing “CowBytes” program and, over coffee, we thought that a semi-regular feature outlining the program’s decision-making, management and farm economic tools would be beneficial to Horizon readers. So, in coming issues, we will highlight the benefits that area cattle producers can derive from the CowBytes program while also including some “Questions & Answers” and “Tips” along the way. So tune in, but if you have questions before then, speak to Monika, Stacy or Kaitlin at the Peace Country Beef & Forage Association office in either High Prairie (780-523-4033) or Fairview (780-835-6799).
Federal Election Results
The ballots have been cast and counted; the mud-slinging is over; the dust has settled and, for better or worse, the 2015 federal election is over with Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party winning a majority mandate to form government (184 seats). Sorting grain by chemical composition BY KEVIN HURSH Grain cleaning has traditionally been based on differences in size, shape and density, but the new frontier is near infrared transmittance, or NIT. Scalping sieves, sifting sieves, air aspiration, spirals and indents are some of the tools used to separate grain from weed seeds and other undesirables in a typical seed-cleaning operation. Most commercial cleaning plants also have gravity tables that can sort seeds according to their density, and that’s helpful in many instances. Some plants have colour sorters, a much newer technology that can separate seeds according to optical characteristics. For instance, frost-darkened kernels can be removed. The capability of colour sorters continues to improve. NIT sorters work in much the same way as colour sorters, but analyze chemical composition by passing near-infrared light through the seed. The first ap-

The Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI), based in Winnipeg, has monitored the progress and decided to buy two machines to assess and demonstrate the capability of the technology. Rex Newkirk, CIGI’s vice-president of re-
has upgraded a grain sample from 26 per cent fusarium to just 0.8 per cent. Newkirk is also excited by other applications, including sorting for protein and upgrading durum through the selection of hard vitreous kernels. With proper calibration, it should be possible to sort seeds for sprouting and frost damage. While current NIT units come with a

As with optical sorters, NIT sorting technology will get better, faster and more economical. Plus, new applications are sure to be developed.

What is a veterinary technologist’s job Ask anyone what a nurse’s job is, and you’ll get a plethora of answers. Nurses care for patients on a day-to-day basis, giving medications and performing treatments. Nurses answer questions and provide assistance with medical concerns, assist doctors during surgeries, monitor the people in their care for any change in their condition. Nurses provide support during difficult times for their patients and their families as well as their doctors and coworkers. Nurses can be described as the backbone of any hospital or medical practice, and are essential to gold-standard medical care. Ask anyone what a veterinary technologist’s job is, and chances are you’ll get a blank stare. Despite the fundamental role they play in keeping veterinary practices running smoothly and ensuring top-notch care for patients and clients alike, registered veterinary technologists – also known as RVTs – are all too often forgotten or overlooked. In 1993, National Veterinary Technician Week was created in order to celebrate the hard working RVTs who have dedicated their life to compassionate and high-quality veterinary care. So what exactly does an RVT do? The most common answer to that question, if you ask a tech, is ‘everything’ – and they wouldn’t be too far off the mark! RVTs have gone to school for either a two or three year intensive program, during which they take as many as fourteen courses each semester. They are taught anatomy and physiology of all species they

may handle during their careers, from dogs, cats, cattle, and horses to exotic species such as monkeys, birds, and small animals. They take courses on pharmacology, immunology, parasitology, and microbiology. They are taught how to assist the veterinarian with recognizing, diagnosing, and treating a variety of common illnesses and ailments. They learn nursing skills such as placing IVs and catheters, prepping animals for surgery, collecting samples for analysis, and caring for them in-hospital. They learn surgical techniques and how best to assist their surgeon. They are taught anesthesia, reproductive sciences, dentistry, and radiography (how to take, develop, and interpret x-rays). Before graduation they must spend time working in veterinary clinics to further develop their skills, and after graduation, must pass a national exam to earn their certification. In the clinic, an RVT will be involved in almost every aspect of your pet’s care. If you bring your puppy in to be spayed, an RVT will weigh her and calculate the drugs needed for her to have a safe and stable anesthesia. After the veterinarian has examined her, the RVT will collect and analyze her blood if desired, or will immediately proceed with her sedation. The RVT will place her under anesthesia and begin monitoring her heart rate, breathing, temperature, levels of oxygen in the blood, and blood pressure. If the vet needs
help during the surgery, the RVT will ‘scrub in’ and offer sterile assistance. After, the RVT will watch your pet recover to ensure everything goes smoothly. During dental procedures, the RVT is again responsible for the anesthesia and monitoring as well as taking dental x-rays of the mouth, cleaning, and polishing the teeth. They may be called on to take x-rays of other patients, analyze samples of blood, urine, and feces, or place bandages. They will fill prescriptions and educate clients on their animal’s health, offering advice, knowledge, and support. They perform all the day-to-day nursing care for their patients, cleaning their kennels or runs, ensuring their bedding is always fresh, dry, and warm, giving medications or treatments, taking them out for walks, and offering plenty of snuggles and TLC. They help to take notes and maintain records, keep the clinic inventory stocked, and yes – clean up whatever bodily fluids end up on the kennel, floor, table, or their shirt. RVTs are, just like nurses, the backbone of any successful veterinary clinic or hospital. And just like nurses, RVTs often do not receive recognition for the amazing job they do caring for your family. Remember to thank an RVT for all that they do and trust that when you leave your pet in their hands, they will be receiving the best possible treatment and care you could hope for.
Dawson Creek Veterinary Clinic November is Vaccine and Disease Month THE IMPORTANCE OF BOOSTERS
Dr. Tegan Alce
Dr. Jenny Soucy
Boosters are essential for most vaccines because the proper education of the B cells (or memory cells) of the immune system requires the presentation of the offending foreigner more than once. One-time exposure may sometimes not be enough to trigger memory.

Remember that some things aren’t for sale Sticking with the Code Of The West theme, I had to put my thinking cap on for a minute to come up with something to write about and I got to thinking how some things aren’t for sale and how some things can’t be bought. For instance, if you’ve owned horses for very long, you probably understand what I mean when I say “I’ve got some horses that I could never sell”. I might not be using them anymore, but I’ll buy their feed, trim their feet, deworm them and look after them forever. They will have a home with me until their last day. They aren’t for sale at any price. When it comes to horsemanship, there are things that we can buy, but the things that horses like the most can’t be bought. There are three things that jump out at me when I think of the most important things that a horse would pick if they could in their owner, trainer, or rider. Those three things are feel, timing, and emotional fitness. All three are connected as most anything we do with horses are. I don’t know if I’ve ever written about “emotional fitness”. I have mentioned “feel” and “timing” often and, contrary to many people’s beliefs, feel and timing are not things you are born with, but they can be learned, developed and improved. The same goes for emotional fitness. If you have a program you follow to develop your horsemanship skills, the program should be set up so that the exercises and lay out of that program will help you develop and improve our feel, timing and

along with that emotional fitness as you move upwards through the program. Feel and timing comes from reading the horse correctly. You must understand what is going on with the horse, what is he thinking in order to use the correct feel and timing for the situation. We are not born being able to read a horse. That ability comes over time and only if we are trying to grow and improve. The program should be designed for us to move forward and we will run into difficulties that we will need to work through. Generally, it always requires us to have better feel and timing and a higher level of emotional fitness. What is emotional fitness? In short, it is staying calm in all situations and it’s very impressive. Hopefully, we have had a role model or someone we know that we have been around in our lives that we have been able to watch, learn and admire and that just doesn’t seem to get rattled no matter what is going on. They can deal with the tough situations while others are panicking, freezing up, yelling, crying, scared, or mad which are all emotions that don’t serve us well in most situations and for sure not with our horses. These emotions get in the way of good feel and timing. They cause us to make poor decisions. Some people seem to get upset about almost everything and take the smallest thing to unbelievable levels of emotion. That is just a lack of emotional fitness. As luck would have it, we can always get better in all three areas. The journey is actually quite fun and something to be very proud of. Your horses will be forever thankful and they will show it in the way they behave. As I have worked on my horsemanship, I have had to continue to develop in all three areas and any one of the three could stop me from moving forward. It
has become something I look forward to always try to get better because it shows up in my horses and, frankly, in other areas of my life. I work towards having a horse that is emotionally fit so it only stands to reason and fair that if we ask it of them we need to ask it of ourselves. It makes them safer to ride and a pleasure to be around. Feel, timing and emotional fitness are three separate but very much connected entities that have great value to your horse, friends and family. They have great value but we won’t find these things for sale in a catalogue or on a store shelf or on a website. When we are playing with our horses and emotions are getting away from us, it is an opportunity to improve how long it goes on and how bad it gets. Lack of emotional fitness will affect our feel and timing which, in turn, creates the horse we have or contributes to the situation we are in such as a horse that won’t load, or rears up, pulls back, is bad with his feet, prances around, spooks, is hard to catch and so on. If any of that happens, how do you handle it? What do your emotions do? Staying calm, thinking, figuring out why and start developing the horse so we don’t have these or other problems is the answer. Getting emotional in anyway will not fix the problem and, most likely, makes it worse. The best techniques and exercises are only as good as the feel, timing and emotions behind it. Some of the best things just aren’t for sale. Have fun and be safe, Glenn Stewart

CRSB, Saskatoon, SK, Oct 15, 2015 – The Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 30th, 2015 in Saskatoon, SK. The meeting brought together over 55 organizations representing all aspects of the Canadian beef value chain to celebrate this year’s accomplishments and plan for the upcoming year. Topics included updates on the sustainability benchmarking study, business strategy, indicator development and upcoming verification work. Participants also had the opportunity to tour Pound-Maker Agventures Ltd., Blair’s Family of Companies and the Western Beef Development Centre’s Termuende Research Ranch, where they learned about some of the sustainability initiatives taking place in Saskatchewan. Part of the CRSB’s work focuses on developing the framework to produce and source verified sustainable beef within the value chain. This framework consists of two key components: indicators and verification. The indicators will determine how sustainability will be measured; and the verification protocols will outline the necessary approach for monitoring and verifying the indicators. A multi-stakeholder CRSB committee has reached consensus on the first set of indicators for primary producers. These indicators were presented at the meeting, and the breakout discussion session yielded extremely valuable feedback and revealed general agreement on the future direction of the indicators. “It is amazing to see how quickly we reached consensus on the indicators, both within the committee and at the AGM. We are often saying similar things just in a different way. The main thing is that we are all in this together and want to move forward and achieve positive and realistic outcomes,” stated Tim Hardman from the World Wildlife Fund, who co-chairs

the committee tasked with drafting and refining the indicators. The committee will continue working on the indicators for other players in the value chain. The verification work is coming up next. At the meeting, CRSB members also elected three new directors to its Council. The CRSB is pleased to welcome Ian Barnett (Nature Conservancy of Canada), Trevor MacLean (Scotiabank) and Page Stuart (Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association). “I am thrilled to welcome Ian, Trevor and Page to the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef’s Council,” said Cherie Copithorne-Barnes, Chair of the Council and a producer from west of Calgary, Alberta. “These three individuals bring new perspectives and invaluable experience and skills to the Council that will only benefit the organization as we move forward with our innovative and ambitious work.” The Canadian beef industry is committed to sustainability and continuous improvement. It is widely recognized that a coordinated and collaborative approach is required to make meaningful progress. This commitment is reflected, in part, in the overwhelming support for the CRSB and the work it has been doing, and is demonstrated through the sold-out attendance at the AGM. Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) causes Johne’s disease, a chronic infectious disease of ruminants. Infection normally occurs in the neonatal period when calves ingest an infectious dose of MAP. The clinical, irreversible and ultimately fatal disease does not occur until years later. In the meantime, animals with preclinical Johne’s disease may look healthy while still shedding MAP in their feces, transmitting the disease to new animals. There are no effective vaccines or treatments, and diagnostic tests fail to identify many infected animals
in the pre-clinical state. Research currently underway and funded by the National Check-off and Canada’s Beef Science Cluster is working to identify proteins secreted by MAP that can elicit a MAP-specific cell mediated immune response. A reliable, sensitive, specific diagnostic test that accurately identifies MAP carriers in the early stages of infection would greatly help efforts to control the disease in beef herds. Alberta livestock owners now have easier access to information and services for the livestock traceability system through a new interactive map called Traceability Connects. “Traceability Connects was developed to help livestock owners and industry connect with traceability service providers to help them fulfill their traceability requirements,” says Kelly Corbett, traceability education coordinator, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Edmonton. “Regardless of the livestock or poultry they own, this tool will help livestock owners and producers find the traceability related services they need, at a location close to them.” Alberta’s traceability system includes requirements for premises identification, animal identification and animal movement tracking. These assist with the timely response to disease outbreaks, food safety investigations and emergencies such as floods or fires. “The tool identifies over 80 locations province-wide that offer a range of livestock traceability services that are often free of charge,” says Corbett. “You can select the type of livestock, then the traceability service you need and the map will display all of the service providers for that service. For example, let’s say you need to transport your cattle outside of Alberta. You can use the tool to find a nearby livestock inspector from Livestock Identification Services (LIS), who can issue you a livestock permit. You can also narrow your search further by selecting a particular region in Alberta.” In addition to finding out the contact information of a service provider, livestock owners can use the tool to find out what other traceability related services are offered at that same location or nearby.
“You can choose to search for auction markets to see what species of animals they sell,” says Corbett. "Traceability Connects can also identify the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) mobile field representative and the LIS livestock inspector who work out of that auction market and could assist you in meeting your traceability requirements." As all livestock owners are required to provide a Premises Identification (PID) Number when purchasing medicine at an authorized medicine sales outlet, the tool can connect them to someone who can assist them to either find out what their PID Number is or help them obtain a PID Number. According to Corbett, Traceability Connects is a tool that can be helpful to a wide range of clients. “Industry groups, as well as agri-businesses such as stable owners, feedlot operators and cow-calf producers, can all use this tool to help find traceability service providers close to them or their clients. The tool will also be useful for animal owners who aren’t highly active in the livestock industry such as owners of backyard poultry flocks or acreage owners with only one or a few animals. Even folks who only have one animal, such as a pot-bellied pig or a horse that they consider a companion animal or pet, will find value. These groups of clients still need to meet traceability requirements, like registering in the premises identification system, so this tool will be beneficial for them.” To use the Traceability Connects tool and learn more about traceability service providers in your area, visit www.agriculture.alberta.ca/TraceabilityConnects. For questions regarding livestock traceability requirements call the Ag-Info Centre at 310-FARM (3276). Contact: Alberta Ag-Info Centre 310-FARM (3276)

Local Cattlemen benefit from PCBFA Workshop
Cattle producers in the Savanna area took advantage of a “Ration Balancing” workshop hosted by the Peace Country Beef and Forage Association in Savanna on Wednesday, October 7th. The material was presented by Barry Yaremcio, Beef and Forage Specialist for Alberta Agriculture and Forestry with Barry covering such topics as reading feed tests, formulating winter feeding decisions and how to best utilize the feed options available to the cattle producer.

The workshop was a “hand-on” affair, with all participants able to work with Cattle Bytes (version 5), an easy-to-use beef ration balancing software package that allows you to balance for all the major nutrients and most of the micro-nutrients while calculating the nutrient values of the rations based on the amount of each feed selected making it a great decision-making tool for cattle producers.

Apple and Google become driving forces By Peter Gredig Not that long ago, the thought of hands-free tractor guidance seemed ridiculous. Now that it’s mainstream, we take it for granted. It’s pretty simple – software processes incoming GPS data and sends the appropriate signals to the power steering on your tractor. Game changed. In a similar way, the automotive sector is about to undergo massive change due to increasingly powerful software. This 100-year-old industry is dominated by a handful of players who have competed for market share by offering incremental
innovation and change with each new model year. The cars we drive today are not dramatically different from what we drove 10 years ago, with one exception: software. Cars can sense traffic in blind spots, offer hands-free parallel parking, brake automatically to avoid collisions, have mobile Wi-Fi, use voice recognition. These software- and sensor-driven functionalities are now the differentiator between brands and models. Two mega-players in global computing and communication technology, Ap-

ple and Google, have both made bold statements about their desire to be in the automotive sector, and this is where it gets disruptive. These companies are not part of the entrenched 100-year mindset, and they’re not interested in how cars were built in the past. They are software powerhouses, and they live and breathe user experience. They see a marketplace ripe for a shakeup for both manufacturers and consumers. Google is actively testing cars that drive themselves and it’s only a matter of time before this is marketready. The bigger challenge is figuring out how insurance, law enforcement and road design will adapt to autonomous vehicles. It’s a cultural and infrastructure speedbump more than a technological problem. Apple is investing significant resources to develop or source battery technology that will make the electric

car a viable and practical option. Tesla has made great strides on this front with their high performance electric cars. Maybe the biggest difference in vision is to challenge the ownership model that exists today. If a vehicle can drive itself and knows where we are, it can be summoned when and where it’s needed rather than sitting idle in the driveway or parking lot for 90 per cent of the time. There are a lot of skeptics who think these newbies, as rich as they are, are in way over their heads, but I think it will be fascinating to watch this unfold. The established manufacturers are definitely paying attention. Farmers know that it wasn’t the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who led the charge on hands-free in our tractors. It was aftermarket software companies. Fasten your seatbelt. It should be an interesting ride.

The Farm Safety Centre has a new Safety Smarts instructor to the Peace Country. Carla Richard is a long-time resident of northern Alberta and will be delivering in-class farm safety presentations to rural elementary students throughout the region. “Carla’s life skills and safety experience will make her a valuable addition to our delivery team,” says Laura Nelson, executive director of the Farm Safety Centre. The Safety Smarts program teaches rural children from kindergarten through grade six to recognize and react safely to a wide variety of potential farm hazards. “I am really excited to be part of farm safety in the Peace Country,” says Carla Richaar. “The program has been running since 1998 and this year it will reach a huge milestone of reaching 500,000 rural children across the province.” Safety Smarts is delivered by a team of eight regional instructors who travel more than 125,000 km’s each school year to reach students in rural and remote schools in Alberta. The Safety Smarts program is very well received by students who are eager to learn about farm safety and share their own stories and experiences. During each school year, hundreds of rural schools invite the Safety Smarts program into their classrooms. Teachers hear of the close calls and near misses experienced by individuals in their com-

She can be contacted by email at c.richard@abfarmsafety. com. “The farm is unique in that it is both a worksite and a home. I look forward to helping students learn how to recognize dangers on the farm, and how to make good safety choices.” Safety Smarts presentations are offered to public, separate and Hutterite colony schools. Build your legacy together with the Transition Loan Courtesy of AgriSuccess Ready to buy the farm of your dreams? If you’re looking to start up your own farming operation, ambition is plentiful. But having enough money to make a purchase is usually a different story. “When you’re young and just starting up, access to capital isn’t always so easy,” says Jon Hironaka, FCC Relationship Manager based out of Camrose, Alta. “A lot of young people have the education, the skills and drive to run a successful operation. But where they come up short is in having the funds to get started.” Conversely, Jon says older generations looking to sell and retire from the business are stuck – they want to sell the farm, but qualified buyers are few and far between. “Ideally, you want to bring the two parties together,” says Jon. “The Transition Loan is such a great tool because it benefits both the buyer and seller. It allows the buyer to purchase and build their dream sooner, while giving the seller a qualified purchaser and guaranteed protection on their retirement.” For buyers, the loan provides options. They can choose to buy with less money down, sometimes as low as no money down depending on what they need. Buyers can also choose payment options that work best for their new business make interest-only payments to improve cash flow, or build equity with principalreducing payments. Are you ready to sell the farm you’ve built? Finding a qualified buyer for your operation is sometimes easier said than done. Striking a deal that’s attractive to both buyers and sellers makes transferring the farm easier. When a buyer comes knocking at your door with the Transition Loan, you can be assured there’s no risk. FCC guarantees full payment of the sale proceeds backed by a written Payment Schedule Guarantee. You
can set up the payment amounts you want – guaranteed, and extend them for as long as five years, which may help with tax planning. “This loan really helps renew the lifeblood of agriculture,” says Jon.
“Sellers get to enjoy the fruits of their labour while passing on something they’ve built over decades. There’s a sense of satisfaction in helping young farmers carry on a tradition everyone can be proud of.” You can also visit fcc.ca/TransitionLoan.

By John Dietz Courtesy of AgriSuccess Ahead of the curve is where the Hiebert brothers like to ride. Right now, they’re well along the path to launching the first Canada-wide drone airline. Curtis, 39, and Scott, 33, grew up on a Red River Valley farm near Carman, Man. Under their father Ron Hiebert’s management, R&L Acres of Sperling, Man., grew and prospered for three decades using cutting-edge cropping practices. The newest venture began in early 2013. At that point, R&L cropped about 11,000 acres of corn, canola, soybeans and wheat. The family also had other enterprises. They formed a trucking company, selling big square straw bales into upper Midwest states (RLacres.com). They also sold, by the thousands, mounting brackets for GPS to farmers in Canada, the U.S. and Australia through John Deere dealers (TheAttachmentFarm.com). Exploring a new opportunity Both sidelines – trucking straw and building brackets to fit old GPS receivers on new machinery – began as ideas from Curtis. He was annoyed with an issue, and saw an opportunity. Meanwhile, on the West Coast, his younger brother enjoyed a 12-year career in mortgage and investments markets. He had recently moved to Whistler, but maintained his farm roots and was looking for an investment opportunity. In 2013, Scott discovered Curtis had picked up a hot new consumer toy: a DJI Phantom drone aircraft with a digital cam-
launch drone airline
era on board. He planned to try it for some crop scouting. “We started playing around with UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) at first,” Scott says. “By the fall, we started really looking at the business aspect. Last year, 2014, was a test year. We tried about seven of them, and spent a lot of money trying things.” Their drone trials were mostly on the farm, but also in the mountains. They explored the capabilities of both fixed wing and rotor units, from inexpensive DJI Phantoms to a $65,000 fixed-wing UAV from Eastern Europe. Scott spent several days in Slovenia, learning to fly that one. They also tested the popular eBee from SenseFly in Switzerland, and the Precision Hawk built in Peterborough, Ont. Most exotic was the Big Guy, as Scott calls it. Custom-built for them in Vancouver, the Big Guy has eight rotors and the “best of everything” for lift capacity, sensors and flying time. It can handle a five-plus kilogram payload, such as the professional Red Epic video camera. Building a plan While building his knowledge base and developing a business plan, Scott demonstrated his UAVs to search-andrescue operators in the mountains at Whistler, and to RCMP crime and accident scene investigators across the Prairies. He also focused on legalities and issues for farmers. “We were looking at it as a business that would benefit more than our own farm. It was obvious that other industries
Holding a
could use it, but you need to prove the model,” Scott says. “We’re still doing that.” The emerging UAV industry in Canada is carefully regulated by Transport Canada (tc.gc.ca). Units are sized by weight classes. Operators are licensed for the class of UAV they handle. They need to complete a training program. Very thorough restrictions apply to where and when a UAV may be flown. Achieving their milestones In early 2015, Scott and Curtis reached a milestone in the UAV project. Transport Canada approved licenses to operate in British Columbia, the Prairies, Ontario and the Territories. They also have applications underway for licenses to operate in Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. As well, the brothers formed a UAV service company, Green Aero Tech (GreenAeroTech.com). They acquired distribution rights for Precision Hawk in Western Canada and retail licences for the DJI line of rotor-based UAVs and the multi-rotor Draganflyer from Saskatchewan. Through Precision Hawk, Green Aero can process data from a UAV sensor in minutes rather than hours or days, and for as little as 10 cents an acre. Their first customers included two world-class seed companies, a leading machinery manufacturer, a fastgrowing agronomic consulting company, individual agronomists and a film company. The plan is to devote the 2015 growing season to retail sales, service to new clients and continuing research on their own land.
Curtis and Scott Hiebert
“Scott is fully licensed for all of Canada west of Quebec right now,” Curtis says. “Very few people are licensed that way, as an administrator. It’s like having an airline. Under his licence, he has people doing film work in Vancouver, real estate work in Ontario and agriculture research on the Prairies.” While the full potential of UAV technology is yet to be realized, the Hiebert brothers are on the soaring edge, both within and outside the agriculture sector.

On the open road Ontario has had a very interesting relationship with the motorcycle! In 1834, Toronto became the new name for York. The name was officially changed because of the number of communities in the region named York, not to mention the county that the town was located in! In 1879, manufacturing in Ontario began to boom largely due to the high tariffs placed on American made goods. The great fire of 1904 set things back a little in Toronto, but the opening of the Canadian Pacific Railway further spurred on the economic growth of the region. By 1912, Hendee Manufacturing had opened a plant on 12 Mercer Street in Toronto. Yes, for a short period of time in history, Indians were produced in Canada! But let’s step back to 1910 - a year that saw two of Canada’s best racers hit the scene.
In 1910, the oldest motor cycle dealership in Canada, Sturgess & Sons Motor Cycles opened in Hamilton ON. Young Ted Sturgess became one of Canada’s most successful dirt and road race riders. Invited in 1939 to race in the English National League, Ted returned home at the outbreak of World War II. He served for four and a half years in the RCAF and then went on to win many more Canadian titles on his motorcycle. Also in 1910, a young man named Harold Cole bought his first motorcycle, a 500 CC Yale. His very first action was to take the bike to the racetrack, a dirt oval in Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto. He was 15 years old and none of the other racers would let him compete at either Exhibition Place or Scarborough Beach, but he made the best of it by practising, a lot. 1911 was a big year for the 16 year old Cole. His first race in Waterloo, he won the heat and the three mile final, then, on a loaned Indian a week later, he won at Exhibition Place. During the Canadian National Exhibition in late August of 1911, he set a five mile record then he won a 25 mile event winning the Commeford Cup and the Dominion Championship! By 1913, Harold Cole had become a dominant figure in racing in eastern Canada and having beaten Joe Baribeau paved the way for him to be paid $500 by the Toronto Motorcycle Club to race exclusively in their events. It didn’t hurt that he ended up winning a similar amount

in prize money! The outbreak of the First World War in 1914 put an end to the racing career of Harold Cole. As with British Columbia, Vancouver and Vancouver Island in particular, where shipping made motorcycles easier to obtain than in the prairies, Ontario became a hotbed for the motorcycle rapidly. Manufacturers began seeing the value in forming motorcycle clubs to promote their brands and the first of these types of motorcycle clubs to open in Ontario was the British Empire Motorcycle Club in 1928. Graham Oates was the first elected president of the British Empire Motorcycle Club. Born to John Oates and Mary Graham, on January 18, 1897 in Douglas, Isle of Man England, James Walter Oates, or Graham as he was called, was born to promote motorcycle racing. He moved to Canada in 1927. and served as the vice president for a company called Overseas Motors on Danforth Ave. in Toronto. They imported Rudge-Whitworth, Ariel, Coventry

He is also the same man who not only rode an Ariel with a side car built by Sturgess & Sons Motor Cycles, right across Canada setting a number of firsts, but he is also the first person credited with riding a motorcycle and sidecar to Fort Churchill (the place of my birth). That trip also made him the only person to ever reach the Hudson’s Bay with a motorized, rubber tired vehicle of any kind. Graham’s illustrious career included him being a medalist of the International Six Day Trials from 1933 to 1939. Toronto and Hamilton are not the only communities from this era who produced or housed famous riders of the day. Belleville Ontario is home to one of Canada’s preeminent racers of all time. George Pepper was elected as the president of the Quinte Motorcycle Club in 1933 at 18 years of age. He had after all competed in the AMA’s very first 200 Mile road

Eagle and Matchless Motorcycles. Graham rode despatch in both World War I and II. (During World War I on a horse and in World War II on a motorcycle.) In fact, he created a training program for despatch riders during World War II.

Ontario’s relationship with the motorcycle race in Savannah Georgia in 1932 and competed in the Ontario Tourist Trophy earlier in the year. In 1936, Belleville sited the Canadian Championship 200 road race. It drew over 20,000 spectators and 35 of the top racers of the day. Starting in 8th position, George rode his single cylinder Norton to first place, 3 laps and was nearly 10 minutes ahead of the Harley factory rider, Babe Tancrede who had started in first. After a disappointing series of races on the Isle of Mann in 1937, he ended up being invited to compete in the English Speedway Races where crowds could swell to 60,000 and winnings could reach $400 a week. During World War II, George became a commissioned pilot with the RAF in 1941 and like on the track, he did it with the highest possible scores a pilot could receive. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1942. He and his crewman had shot down 18 enemy bombers, (3 of them in one night raid) in 12 months. George died in
November of 1942 during a test flight. His ashes were returned to Canada and he is buried in Belleville cemetery. Interesting Historical Tidbits: 1894 - Toronto Police Service is the first in North America to use bicycles for patrols In 1901 - Newmarket ON, seeing a gas powered motorcycle was an oddity that people felt the need to gawk at. 1904 - Walkerville Ontario, Henry Ford establishes Ford of Canada. This was a completely independent company from the American company although it relied on the American company for engineering and design. 1911 - Toronto Police Service is the first to use motorcycles in Canada. 1916 - The Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings is destroyed by fire. 1922 - With over 180,000 vehicles on the roads in Ontario, the OPP which were formed in 1909, were already using motorcycles to patrol the highways. Motorcycle officers had to supply and maintain their own bikes! 1927 - The Peace Tower opens along-
side the fully rebuilt Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings. This is also the year that Canada celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the Confederation. 1939 - The National War Memorial is unveiled by King George the VI and Queen Elizabeth. 1946 - The first drive in theatre in Canada opens in Stoney Creek Ontario and could hold 750 cars. 1949 - Newfoundland becomes the 10th province of Canada. Today 13.5 million people call Ontario home. there are over 223,000 registered for highway use motorcycles in Ontario. I hope you will join me next time as we look at Quebec’s history with the motorcycle. If you are blessed to be riding today, please remember to ride like everyone around you is blind and cannot see you.
And don’t forget - Canada’s MOST Rider Friendly Community Contest we are on the hunt for that one community that really welcomes riders...where is it? Help us find out.... Blueberry Creek
Reprinted from ‘The Big Bend’ with permission of Mrs. Arletta Hampton, a remaining member of the Historical Society of Blueberry Mountain Alberta.
Mike Kutrowski was born in 1898 in Badski, Poland, where he married Tekla. They had four children when they emigrated to Canada in the fall of 1929. When they settled in Canada they raised three more children. Language: Their only langauge was Ukrainian. They had all roots in Russia when they came to Canada, but they put down new roots again in the Blueberry Creek area. They are of the Greek Orthodox religion. Why Parents Came: They came to Canada because they did not like the government. It was also hard to make money, hard to get work, and they could not own any property. They felt that coming to Canada would allow them freedom, which it did. Conditions Met: The conditions facing them in Canada were -lots of bush to clear, trails to make, flies, hunger, and hard times to cope with. They were very poor, and took a homestead in the Blueberry Creek area. They built themselves a log shack, then they cut brush and worked hard to clear land. They stayed with neighbors and relatives till they got the house built. After that they kept on working and raising livestock to build up their farm. There were no schools when they first homesteaded, so the family got very little education. One Difficulty Encountered: Work was hard to find in order to make any money, and people had to go elsewhere
to find work. John Kutrowski went to work in Hope, British Columbia. He was killed in 1946 when a bucket fell off a cat where he was working. The bucket fell on him and crushed him. One Pleasure Encountered: One pleasure encountered was when they made moonshine and didn’t let anybody know. The pleasure of this was to make it in a little log shack where nobody would see. It would be fun to drink it when it was done. It was a pleasure to have this treat, because they felt it took their minds off other things. Growth Of The Family: Bill Kutrowski married Anne Sidor of Wonderland and raised four children. They farm in the Blueberry Creek area. John Kutrowski was killed in an accident in 1946. Nick Kutrowski married Irene Beaudoin of Tangent and raised two children. They farm in the Blueberry Creek area. Nettie Kutrowski married Sam Kobylanski of Rycroft and raised five children. Sam and Nettie are now retired and live in Rycroft. Mary Kutrowski married Bill Skoworodko of Blueberry Creek and raised four children. They now live in Grande Prairie. Rose Kutrowski married Albert Hannas of Rycroft and raised seven children. They farm in the Rycroft area. Mike Kutrowski died in 1965 in Spirit River Hospital. Tekla Kutrowski died in 1948 in Spirit River Hospital.
