FRESHERS

Each year the Students’ Union holds a series of events spread across welcome week for new students (and old). Taking part in the wide range of events that take place provides a great chance to meet new people and settle into The Northern life. Freshers Week also includes the Freshers Fayre which will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 18th September at 1 Church Street. This is where local and national businesses offer their services and products to students, often at discount prices - a great chance to get some freebies! This will also be a chance to see about activities you can take part in across the year, including sports, clubs and societies. There will also be food and drink available, so it is a great way to explore your interests and make new friends. Other events such as SU nights at the School and pub crawls are also set out in the timetable and further information will be available via Facebook and Instagram. All School ran freshers events will be free entry this year, so get yourself along!

CLUBS & SOCIETIES This is the ideal time to meet like-minded people, try something new or get back into an old hobby. Our clubs and societies are groups run by students for students and there are plenty to choose from to get involved with. Whether you’re a cinephile or you want to give kick boxing a go, you are sure to find something you’ll enjoy. If you’ve got a particular interest and want to get other students involved, we can help you get a club or society up and running and provide support throughout the process. Examples of past and present clubs and societies are: yoga, sailing club, research society, LGBTQ and self-defence.

START YOUR OWN CLUB OR SOCIETY Starting a club or society couldn’t be easier, just get in touch via any of our social media accounts or email Dan at: daniel.tierney@northernart.ac.uk

FRESHER’S FAYRE Check out our Freshers’ Fayre on Wednesday 18th September 3-5pm @ 1 Church Street for clubs, societies, taster sessions and your opportunity to start your own club or society there and then!

SPORTS & FITNESS The Students’ Union has a keen interest in arranging and assisting students in participating in sports and leisure activities and we are always looking to add to the number of sports teams and fitness activities we offer during the year. We have made links with both the local Further Education College and the Council

to offer gym deals for both individual sessions and monthly membership. There are also numerous sports clubs and groups who offer facilities and activities to join in with. We have tried to offer an opportunity to have a go at activities over the last year by offering taster sessions to students, these included yoga

and netball taster sessions which were free and open to all. We will continue with this in the coming year at The Northern School of Art, where you can expect taster sessions in dance, self-defence classes and yoga, just to name a few.

MORE INFO If you would like more information or would like help in finding a club to suit your sporting needs get in touch with Dan Tierney, Student Liaison Officer by emailing: daniel.tierney@northernart.ac.uk.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

MEET FELLOW INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Coming to study in another country is an exciting experience and we know you will have many questions. We have a great group of international students who have been with us and have a wealth of experience that they can share with you, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch! Take a look at the British Council’s website, it will provide you with very useful information and give you an exciting taste of life in the UK. www.educationuk.org

During welcome week we will give you the opportunity to meet fellow international students, both those who have just joined the school and also those who are in their second and third years of study. You will also get an opportunity to meet our students’ union officers and students, feel free to get in touch before you arrive through our social media pages.

GETTING TO SCHOOL The Northern School of Art is next to the train station, which has direct lines to the Durham Coast Line 17 miles (27 km) between Newcastle and Middlesbrough.

ARRIVING FROM

The station has 2 main services, these are the northern services and Grand Central. Northern services run southbound to Middlesbrough and northbound to Newcastle. Grand Central services run 5 times per day in each direction. Northbound trains provide services to Sunderland, running directly without calling at Seaham. Southbound services call at York, before terminating at London King’s Cross.

Newcastle Airport If you are arriving from Newcastle Airport, you can travel via train to Hartlepool using the Tyne and Wear Metro and then Northern services. Newcastle Airport is served by its own metro station, so you can pick up a number 1 metro service directly from the airport which goes to Sunderland via Newcastle. To pick up your second train, you can stop at either Newcastle Central Station or Sunderland to get the Northern service to Middlesbrough which stops at Hartlepool train station. This journey including changing at either Newcastle or Sunderland will take around 1 hour and 25 minutes from the airport. From Hartlepool Train Station, the school is only a 4 minute walk away. If you have any questions or would like to arrange for one of our Students Union team to meet you at the station, get in touch with us via Dan Tierney, Student Liaison Officer – at daniel.tierney@northernart.ac.uk

London Arriving into London by flight? You can find your way to the School via the Grand Central direct line to Hartlepool from London Kings Cross station.

By train

By bus

All train services heading north from London are served by London Kings Cross station. The easiest rail service to get is via a Grand Central train, with 5 Grand Central services running from London Kings Cross to Hartlepool every day, going directly to Hartlepool station and taking around 3 hours to complete the journey

National express run coaches from Victoria Coach Station to Hartlepool, these journeys usually last between 7-9 hours.

Manchester By train

Manchester airport is served by its very own train station, which in turn has trains heading north towards Teesside. Unfortunately none of these trains go directly to Hartlepool but you can get to Hartlepool station with only one change at either York to pick up a Grand Central train or by heading to Thornaby to pick up a Northern service to Hartlepool. Both options take around 3 hours to 3 hours and 30 minutes to get to Hartlepool.

Student Services If you need any more information in terms of preparing and/or acclimatising to life in Hartlepool, please make sure to work with our Students Services team who will provide you with all the necessary information, from finances, opening a bank account to finding a doctor’s surgery.

STUDENT VOICE

All students have an opportunity to have a voice within the school. Our ethos is about working together to give you the best student experience.

Student Reps Each year group on each programme elects two student reps, these reps will then represent your year group for the rest of the year. Student reps will spend the next year finding out what their fellow students think of the programme and student life as a whole, and will pass all of this onto your programme leaders and relevant staff from around the School and to the students’ union. Student reps will also act as social reps for each programme who can work with the students’ union to ensure social activities are arranged to cater to all programmes within the school. This role will particularly come in handy later on in your degree journey when programmes will put on their own events, exhibitions and activities, as you raise money for your degree show.

Student Voice Meetings Student Assemblies Held twice a year, student assembly meetings are student rep led meetings of their year group on your programme. Reps will be given training and then will follow an agenda to gain feedback from their entire group on the student experience so far.

Programme Boards Programme boards are attended by student reps, who will be given the chance to discuss their feedback and action points with the cluster manager, their programme team, the students’ union and any other relevant staff from around the School.

Academic Forum This student forum involves student reps and SU officers, who work with our Scholarly Activity and Research Coordinator at the School to discuss all things academic and on programme. Academic Forums are held twice a year.

Surveys Student Perception Survey Students are given another opportunity to feedback via a yearly online survey, which gives students a chance to have their say on their student experience through a 5 minute long survey. This is open to first and second year students.

National Student Survey The National Student Survey is a national survey of all final year students at higher education providers across the country, this survey asks similar questions to the Student Perception Survey but the results of the NSS are published online by the Office for Students and are used by websites such as Unistats to inform prospective students what to expect from a prospective University/School.

Student Committee Reps We have positions available for two Student Committee reps to sit on the school’s Academic Board, to feedback directly from a student’s point of view and then to feedback to the students at the School.

Student Governors The School has a role for a HE Student Governor, the student in this role then represents the interests of all HE students at the school at the very highest level of the school deliberative structure and ensures the student voice is heard at every level in the school.
