Since 1984, The Northwest Passage has been providing quality adventure travel for our guests here in Chicago, across the country and around the world.
The Northwest Passage was founded on the belief that there is no better way to fully experience the world than by engaging with it on its own terms. Whether that is encountering the crisp vastness of the Arctic on one of our North Pole expeditions or exploring a sea cave by kayak along the coast of Southern Crete, we design our trips both for the soul and the body. Our years of experience enable us to give you the most pristine moments possible, whether it’s arriving early at an ancient Minoan palace so we can wander through it alone, arranging an afternoon hike to take full advantage of the joys of sunset and champagne, or timing our trek down the Samaria Gorge at the magic moment when temperature, crowds and lighting are perfect. Adventure builds the soul like nothing else. If you yearn to be truly revitalized on your vacation, there is no better way than by using the time to expand your mind and massage your soul through a trip with The Northwest Passage. We invite you to join us in meeting an adventure challenge in an indulgent and supportive environment, surrounded by some of the world’s most gorgeous landscapes and fascinating cultures. We believe you can do more than you think you can. You can be more than you are. Stop being a mere tourist and become an adventurer. Our Mission The Northwest Passage Adventure Programs are designed to be fun, enhance personal development, promote self-confidence and teach skills through adventure challenge while providing a safe and exciting environment for participants of all levels. We truly care about your accomplishments and success. Come ready for a vacation. Go back ready for anything. How then am I so different from the first men through this way? Like them I left a settled life and threw it all away. To seek a Northwest Passage, at the call of many men, to find there but the road back home again. Stan Rogers

Welcome
Greetings to all old friends and new adventurers! April 6, 2009…an important day in polar history and we were there! 100 years to the day after Admiral Robert Peary, Mathew Henson and their team of four Inuit explorers became the first people to stand foot at the North Pole, we returned to 90° N with 25 team members, including Robert Peary’s great grandson to commemorate this remarkable feat of exploration. We celebrated our way throughout the season, sending 8 ski and dogsled teams to the Pole including both a 35 and a 60-day expedition that followed Peary and Henson’s original route! We are gratified that the Young Presidents Organization and many other guests joined us on expeditions to the North Pole, South Pole and so many other adventures across the globe. Beyond the polar regions The Northwest Passage set out on new Mediterranean kayaking adventures to Paros and Antiparos, and revisited a Midwestern favorite on a 6 day circumnavigation of Isle Royale. Of course we returned to our old favorites – including the incredible island and culture of Crete, Greece where we are welcomed every season as family. We shared our Silver anniversary with thousands of adventurers during our most ambitious and satisfying season ever! Thank you all for making it a memorable 2009 Silver anniversary. Since I founded The Northwest Passage in 1984, I have continually sought out new adventures in an ever expanding canon of destinations and activities. This upcoming season is no exception. I’ll personally lead new kayaking trips to the South Pacific’s New Caledonia, and an unforgettable island-hopping adventure through the stunningly beautiful Cycladic islands that concludes with an audacious day-long crossing from Naxos to Santorini (or should I say Atlantis, as many do). Additionally, my old friend and renowned polar explorer, Lonnie Dupre, will join me as we retrace the steps of an historic British expedition to Greenland’s Eastern ice cap, circa 1936. We’re also expanding our adventure menu to include an intimate multi-sport tour of the Galapagos Islands as well as a ten-day trip in Crete, more time to explore and revel in the exquisite beauty of one of our favorite destinations. 25 years of experience has brought us to the forefront of family adventures and expeditions. I know that nothing tops the joy of discovery except sharing it with your family. We offer a wide variety of family trips from Door County and Devil’s Lake in the Midwest, to the Mediterranean, Africa, North Pole and beyond. Let us coordinate an unforgettable family reunion or custom adventure. No one can top our passion or experience. Join us this year for a one-of-a-kind experience as we reconnect with the inner-explorer within each of us, encounter the natural world on its own terms and discover the truly sublime. Make your adventure dreams a reality today! Cover Photo by: Helen Sweitzer Rick Sweitzer, Mt. Kilimanjaro Summit - August 12, 2008 Executive Director Anna Sweitzer, Age 12

Why Travel with The Northwest Passage?
With twenty-five years of experience in planning and leading outdoor adventures, the guides and staff of The Northwest Passage have refined the elements of the ideal adventure experience.
Security Sure, you’re out here to challenge yourself and take some risks, but you want to know that you’ll come home happy and well. Your safety is a top priority in all of our planning. Our guides are experienced and trained in the hazards and rewards of each trip activity and destination. Each guide carries appropriate certifications in first aid, wilderness medicine and in their areas of expertise. Environmental Stewardship The Northwest Passage has a proud tradition of environmental and social stewardship. Simply put, we believe it’s important to take care of the places we visit, and give back to the people who act as our local guides and hosts. To minimize our global impact we offset 100% of the carbon footprint of each and every adventure (and we’ll help you do the same for your domestic or international travel). Contact us for more information about our environmental initiatives, and for tips to reducing your impact on the environment at home and while on vacation. Comfort At the end of a day spent outdoors, you want a hearty meal and a good night’s rest. We pay careful attention to the food and accommodations you’ll enjoy. On inn-to-inn trips, you’ll visit small, family owned inns and restaurants, chosen for their welcoming hospitality, fresh and appetizing food and quality of service. For our camping trips, we prepare delicious meals at your campsite, offering fresh seafood on a secluded caye or hearty fajitas enjoyed around the campfire. We use high quality tents and equipment, and help you choose the right personal gear to keep you snug and comfortable all night. Fun! This is what you came for! All of our guides love what they do and are eager to share their love of the outdoors and adventure with you. You’ll enjoy the unique opportunity of sharing your adventure with new friends and old among our small groups and friendly staff.

Family Adventures
Nothing tops the experience of cresting a wave, climbing a mountain, completing a portage or encountering new cultures and remote wilderness – except the joy of sharing that experience with your family. I know. In 1993, I led the first group of mushers and skiers to the North Pole. It was a perfect expedition highlighted by a perfect ending: my family joined me at the Pole on the pick-up. It was one of the finer moments of my life. - Rick Sweitzer Today The Northwest Passage offers that same adventure opportunity for your family, all ages and skill levels. Do not just take it from us - here is what other families like yourself have to say. ”This is definitely one of my most enjoyable vacations. It was a challenge for me personally, and I think my 3 kids to complete the kayak trip (we are all beginners). I felt so good that we were all able to complete the trip. The guides were so patient and nice to us as we were learning. The whole experience was great being with family for a week without TV, cell phones. It was definitely one of our better vacations and we will be visiting the website and planning another trip in the future.” - H Olson, Apostle Islands 2008 We invite you to make your family adventure dreams a reality.

highest percentages of repeat clients of any travel company in the world. Some join us for our signature trip, the Cretan kayaking adventure, year after year. Others have honored us by signing up for inaugural trips to brand-new destinations, such as our Milos kayaking adventure launched for the first time in 2008. We’ve had repeat clients come back with three generations of their families to enjoy the unique bonding opportunities that mastering new skills in an unfamiliar environment can offer. By popular demand, we are offering for the first time an expanded 10-day version of our signature trip, Inn-to-Inn Sea Kayaking. This longer trip will include additional locations and more time in some of our favorite places on the still-untouched south coast of Crete. Also, in 2010 we’re offering a unique Elite Class adventure to the island of Naxos, which will be followed by sea kayaking between the remote Small Cyclades islands. We’ll cap it off with a challenging all-day open sea crossing to beautiful Santorini itself. This special trip is for avid, advanced paddlers ready to stretch their limits. Rick Sweitzer will be leading this adventure personally and looks forward to talking with interested participants who believe they are up to the physical and mental demands - and the invigorating rewards - of accomplishing the long sea crossing. New Caledonia
Follow in the wake of Darwin and H.M.S. Beagle for a one-of-a-kind multi-sport adventure in the “Enchanted Isles.” Instead of looking down from a cruise ship observation deck you’ll paddle with dolphins and marine turtles through electric turquoise water to white sand coves lined with sea lions. You’ll mountain bike amongst surreal wildlife born without fear of humans and trek through stunning volcanic landscapes incomparable to anything else on the planet. Don’t forget a camera! You’ll learn why the Galapagos are called an open-air zoo, and after each day’s guided adventure, you’ll retire to the most comfortable accommodations the islands have to offer.
Come with us on a bold new adventure to the beautiful and mysterious island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific! This unique new trip is offered for the first time at a special exploratory price, giving you a great opportunity to explore the world’s largest lagoon by kayak. Our intrepid founder Rick Sweitzer will personally lead a bold group of adventurers inn-to-inn along the coast of this remarkable island and reef. Those who join us on this special expedition can look forward to exploring the unusual indigenous villages of the island, enjoying remarkable French-inspired cuisine, and seeing the rare birds, sea mammals, and colorful fish which are so abundant in this ecosystem. And along the way we’ll be seeing brilliant South Pacific sunsets and gazing at the abundant stars in a night sky far away from city glow.

Mt. Kilimanjaro
Southern Africa
Kilimanjaro Trekking & Wildlife Safari is a beautiful and rewarding experience in every way. Our seven day trek up the Western Breach Route is considered one of the most scenic and rugged routes and provides the greatest opportunity for summit success. Not only does it offer you a high camp amidst towering glaciers, but you will also experience a uniquely intimate view of the mountain. Kilimanjaro is the highest peak on the African continent and the tallest free-standing volcano on earth (19,340 feet). At the end of the dry season huge numbers of animals flock into the Tarangire National Park, a spectacular park with a forest of Baobab trees, open grasslands, Acacia forest, swamps and lakes. It also has the largest number of elephants in Africa. Here we will stay at a tented camp which is set on a bluff overlooking the river.
The extraordinary world of Southern Africa awaits you! Uncover the coast and interior of this African jewel by bicycle, foot and jeep. From Cape Town, your journey begins with cycling along the coastal Garden Route. Your next stop is Durban, an historic colonial town where we’ll savor a traditional braaivleis or barbeque. Enjoy a brief, but magical, journey through the Drakensburg Mountains, then a three night safari in the Kruger National Park.

Florida Everglades
The geological formations in the southwestern region of the United States are about as magnificent as anyone can imagine. Surrounded by the beautiful redrock that makes up Glen Canyon, we will explore the hiddenmost parts of Lake Powell that have only recently become accessible to kayaks, and kayaks only. Imagine a painted sky at the end of the day that changes from a breathtaking sunset to a star-filled sky that is larger than life - all right before your eyes. It doesn’t get any better than this. Join us as we set out for the southwest on this very special outing.
Join us as we explore the wetlands of southern Florida by sea kayak. The Everglades are home to a rich diversity of plant and animal species and were named a World Heritage Site in 1987. The wetlands offer the silent sea kayaker a wonderful opportunity to explore and experience the sandy beaches, morning sunrises and the famous “Chickees” where we’ll camp.

Liability Coverage & Insurance The Northwest Passage®, Inc. assumes no liability for loss of or damage to personal property, injury, or loss of life. We do not carry medical insurance on trip participants. Please be sure that you are adequately covered in the case of accident, injury, or illness during the trip. We recommend you obtain appropriate short-term baggage, life, and trip insurance to cover any loss of property or life and to reimburse non-refundable portions of a cancelled reservation. Check your existing personal policies as to their applicability on certain trips. Any emergency evacuation costs shall be borne by the participant. AIG TravelGuard insurance has worked for many participants; call them at 1.800.826.4919 and tell them that you are booking a Northwest Passage trip, or we can arrange it for you - just give us a call at 1-800RECREATE (1-800-732-7328). Please contact us if you need any additional information. Reservations, Payments, Cancellations & Refunds Reservations are taken on a first come/first served basis. Space is necessarily limited, so reserve your place early to avoid disappointment. A deposit of 50% is required to hold space for you. The balance of trip fees is due 60 days prior to departure. We reserve the right to charge the balance against a credit card or resell the space if the balance is not received when due. Because we incur certain pre-trip expenses, the following policy is necessary if you cancel. Notice of cancellation must be made in writing. If this notice is received by the office: • 60 days or more before the trip, you will receive a full refund less a $100 handling fee ($50 for Midwest destinations); • 30-59 days before the trip (30-44 days for Midwest trips) 70% of the fees received will be credited toward another trip; and • 15-29 days before the trip 50% of fees received will be credited toward another trip. • No refund or credit will be given if you cancel 14 days or less before departure, regardless of the time of registration. • Refunds of payments made by credit card are subject to a processing fee. • Different policies apply to our one-day and Polar Programs - please call for details. • Absolutely no refunds or credits can be made on any portion of a tour once travel has commenced. • If you find a suitable replacement you will be given a full refund, less a $50 handling fee. • Penalties for changing or canceling domestic or international airplane reservations are not the responsibility of The Northwest Passage®, Inc. • We strongly advise you obtain trip cancellation, medical and baggage insurance.
Responsibilities of The Northwest Passage® The Northwest Passage®, Inc. (its employees, agents, outfitters, and owners) acts only as the agent for the owners, contractors, and suppliers by providing means of transportation and/or other related travel services and assumes no responsibility for damage, expense, or inconvenience caused by negligent conduct or financial irresponsibility of suppliers/outfitters, defects in vehicles, breakdown in equipment, late air, or boat arrivals and departures, changes in schedule, acts of God, detention, annoyance, quarantines, strikes, civil disturbance, theft, government regulations, etc. over which they have no control. Reasonable changes in the itinerary may be made for the comfort and well being of the participants. Should there be insufficient participation in any trip or should circumstances beyond our control arise, The Northwest Passage®, Inc. reserves the right to withdraw the trip. In such an event, a full refund will be made. We will also try to accommodate you on another trip. The Northwest Passage®, Inc. reserves the right to alter prices and dates listed in the brochure. Air packages may also be altered at anytime to accommodate international influences. The Northwest Passage®, Inc. is not responsible for any expenses incurred by trip members such as equipment purchase, medical costs, trip cancellation insurance purchase, air ticket cancellation penalties, etc. All participants are required to read, be certain they understand and, if they agree to fully assume all risks involved, sign a waiver at the time of registration releasing The Northwest Passage®, Inc. from any liability resulting from participation in any given trip. Responsibilities of Participants All adventure travel has many elements of risk. Be sure you are prepared to assume all risks associated with the trip and the activity before joining us. Participants must make any medical problems and dietary restrictions known to us when they register. Participants with known medical difficulties must provide their doctor’s written permission to participate. Participants should take care of any pending medical or dental problems prior to departure and must supply their own medical needs. The trip leader has the right to disqualify anyone at any time during the trip if he feels the trip member is physically incapable and/or if a trip member’s continued participation will jeopardize that individual or the group. Neither refunds nor credits are given under such circumstances. Trip participants must choose a trip appropriate to their interests and abilities, must bring appropriate clothing and equipment as advised by The Northwest Passage®, Inc., and are responsible for following normal social behavior patterns with fellow trip members as well as maintaining normal standards of personal hygiene. Should it become necessary, The Northwest Passage®, Inc. will arrange or supply medical treatment, evacuation or any other emergency service on your behalf and at your expense, as The Northwest Passage®, Inc. deems essential for your safety and well being.
All programs require a minimum number of participants.
