Our School School •  A culture of courtesy and common sense •  A liberal arts education drawing connections among artistic, historical, literary, and scientific fields of knowledge •  An outdoor and environmental program •  Stellar athletics These are some of the integral parts of The Northwest School. Set in an urban campus that is housed in a historic landmark cared for by our students, we provide a curriculum for grades 6–12 that offers an international perspective and encourages independent and creative thinking in every class. We educate and shape our students into global citizens who will one day shape our community, nation, and world.

4

Our Mission The Northwest School offers a faculty who engage each student in sequential, cross-disciplinary study in the Humanities, Sciences, and the Arts. We are a diverse community of people who challenge each other to learn in a healthy, creative, and collaborative atmosphere of respect for others, the environment, and ourselves. We graduate students with historical, scientific, artistic, and global perspective, enabling them to think and act with integrity, believing they have a positive impact on the world.

The Summer Camp For over 30 years, The Northwest School has provided a welcoming and engaging summer program for youth, ages 10-16, from across Seattle, the U.S., and the world. In 2014, international students came from the following countries: Australia, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Nepal, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. With integration at all levels, from the classroom to the dorm room, we are a truly international camp; English becomes a passport to new friendships and understanding for both American and international students as they learn together in class and play together outside of the camp day. Modeled on our school’s liberal arts curriculum, campers choose from a wide range of classes, including the visual and performing arts, athletics, and sciences. Our summer faculty are experts in their fields and capable of engaging students of diverse skills and backgrounds. With experience in intercultural instruction, our teachers are prepared to assist students with a broad range of English level and learning styles while also maintaining an engaging and challenging curriculum. Our Summer Camp is an international mecca in the heart of Seattle. Join us this summer and create your own global connections!

“The classes were interesting and our daughter made friends from all over the world.” —Parent of Seattle camper

Our Our Boarding Boarding Program

Lunch Program

The Northwest School is the only independent school in Seattle with an international co-ed boarding program. Our private dorm is situated one block west of campus and houses approximately 58 students on genderspecific floors. During the summer, with our large community of boarding students, we extend into the dormitories of nearby Seattle University. Both facilities have 24-hour security and are staffed with experienced residentiallife counselors. Dorms are equipped with Wi-Fi and/or a computer lab. We also provide bed linens and bath towels. Laundry facilities are located onsite and are free to use.

The NWS kitchen makes all of its decisions based on a philosophy of serving the most local, seasonal, and fresh foods to the students and faculty. We are very conscientious about reducing kitchen waste through compost, recycling, and packaging awareness. The NWS kitchen composts all food waste and recycles all recyclable materials. When the school first implemented this system of compost and recycling, the kitchen reduced the amount of trash produced by over 80%.

Whether you stay in our dorms or at Seattle University, you will enjoy healthy, nutritious meals prepared by professional chefs and cooks as well as spend time outdoors exploring greater Seattle. Campers stay two to a room and, when possible, we match you with a roommate of a different nationality so that you can maximize your English language as well as create new friendships.

Dorm Activities

Activities vary from year to year, but we strive for a combination of cultural, tourist, and just plain fun! Examples from last summer include: •  Mariners baseball game •  Storm basketball game •  Space Needle •  Pike Place Market

Lunch is freshly prepared daily. Dorm students receive breakfast, brunch on the weekends, and dinner. Vegetarian options are always included. We also provide gluten-free and dairy-free options for those who need it. We are a nut-free facility. If you choose to bring your own lunch and snacks, items must be nut-free.

•  Seattle Art Museum •  Woodland Park Zoo

6

•  Alki Beach Dorm students also have access to our rooftop turf, indoor gym, and outdoor basketball court.

Environmental Sustainability

We are excited to again partner with the Seattle Architecture Foundation to offer two innovative classes!

Environmental sustainability is one of the most urgent issues facing the global community today—it is a value that has been an integral part of The Northwest School’s mission since the founding of the school.

This class will take a look at the transformations happening in Seattle communities like Capitol Hill and South Lake Union. We will visit neighborhoods, talk with architects, and design models for new buildings and spaces such as parks, houses, stores, libraries and streets. Taking inspiration from our camp’s international community, we’ll also look at urban centers around the world. $25 materials fee

At the Summer Camp, we approach the discussion of sustainability and environmental responsibility through our environment program and camp classes.

Environment Program – Two to three times per session, students and faculty work together to clean and care for the school and immediate surrounding areas. This fosters stewardship and responsibility.

Intro to Architectural Modeling In this class, we will use architectural modeling to design neighborhood parks, streets, and buildings. We will construct a study model out of cardstock and cardboard, learning techniques to communicate the big ideas about your design. We will then build a more detailed presentation model to scale using balsa wood. $50 materials fee

Camp Classes – For 2015, we continue to focus on environmental sustainability and stewardship in a number of our classes: •  Planning & Designing Urban Communities •  Bikes 101 •  Biology: Examining the Microbes Around Us •  Cooking with NWS •  DIY Fashion: Creative Couture •  Life Science: Flora & Fauna of the Pacific Northwest •  Mad Science Workshop •  Marine Biology: Our Changing Ecosystems •  Sustainable Seattle

English language learners are welcome to enroll in any of our Summer Camp classes, unless a class is listed as requiring native English proficiency. Below are classes specifically for ELL students who wish to improve their English language skills. Although we welcome all levels of English, we recommend that students have had at least one year of English lessons. Because of our integrative environment, campers who have not had any English instruction will have a difficult time adjusting to their classes.

In this class, we will work on pronunciation, enunciation, and projection. Through repeated practice and small-group activities, you will become more at ease in your overall language ability. Beginning Level – Intended for students who have had at least one year of English instruction and can understand basic inquiries (e.g. how are you?, what is your name?, etc.), but are looking to expand their vocabulary and build their confidence in using English. Intermediate Level – Intended for students who can communicate in English, but need to build their confidence and presentation skills. Students will strengthen their technical oral skills of basic pronunciation, volume and projection, stress, intonation, fluency, and looking at the audience.

Journalism: Getting the Scoop! Learn how to gather ideas and turn them into a good story. We’ll discuss interviewing tips, sentence structure, and journalism ethics. We’ll then develop content, work on graphic layout and design, and put together a weekly newsletter to share with everyone at camp.

Writing: Composing an Essay Learn to write essays by examining the strategies that other writers use. We will begin by reading, summarizing, and analyzing various speeches written by activists such as Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King, Jr. In the second week, we will work to incorporate some of these strategies into our own writing in order to create evidence-based persuasive essays. Must be native-English speaker. Restricted to students ages 13+

Reading & Writing – Beginning & Intermediate

Writing: Creative Studio

Through reading, we will develop our English vocabulary. We will then work on expressing your thoughts clearly and eloquently in writing. Our instructors will begin with the basics and guide you through the rules of English composition. Beginning Level – In this class, students will review phonetics, spelling, and grammar, while also building vocabulary. We’ll look at creative writing as well as news articles and short stories to find inspiration for our own written pieces. Intermediate Level – Students will spend time reading and writing in multiple genres, including poetry and short stories, and practical forms like menus and letters, to help them develop their language skills.

In this class, we will look at a variety of forms and genres to help you develop your own unique voice. Must be native-English speaker or have Advanced ELL skills.

Writing: The Fundamentals Learn to define, recognize, and correctly use: subject, predicate, noun, pronoun, verb tense, irregular verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, and clause. Program Director Please contact Van Nguyen, Summer Camp Director, with questions at van.nguyen@northwestschool.org or 206-816-6211.

Location The Northwest School Summer Camp is held at The Northwest School (NWS) main building, located at 1415 Summit Ave, and our new recreational facilities located at 401 E. Pike. Many classes will also include off-site field trips; NWS will provide all transportation needs for class trips.

Non-Discrimination Policy The Northwest School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability, use of service animals, national or ethnic origin, or any other trait or characteristic protected by law in admission of otherwise qualified students; in providing access to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at The Northwest School; or in its administration of educational policies, admissions policies, financial aid, athletics, and other schooladministered programs.

Dormitory Facilities Boarding students will be housed in NWS dormitories or at Seattle University (SU) dormitories. Boarding is available to all Full Day campers, ages 12 and up. All meals are provided in addition to evening and weekend activities and excursions. Both NWS and SU dormitories have 24-hour security, internet access, and laundry facilities. Campers will be assigned a roommate of the same gender and, when possible, of a different nationality. Boarding students may check in after 3:00 PM on the Sunday before the start of their camp session, and check out by 9:00 AM on the Saturday after their camp session ends. We appreciate families letting us know the approximate time their child will be arriving/departing the dorms.

Dorm Visiting Hours We keep the campers busy with activities so we are not often physically at the dorms outside of sleeping hours. If you need to see your child for any reason, please call the dorm to arrange a time to visit: 206-623-0522. Visits should be arranged around scheduled activities and curfews. We cannot adjust activity times to accommodate visits. All parents must leave the dorms by 10:00 PM.

Visa International campers do NOT need a student visa. Because the Summer Camp is a recreational activity, we do not issue I-20s for campers. If you are from a country NOT on the Visa Waiver Program, you will need a tourist visa to enter the United States. Please check with your local embassy for instructions on obtaining a tourist visa.

Airport Transportation Airport transportation is available upon request for boarding students only. Families must complete an Airport Transportation Form (available from the Summer Camp office) and make a payment of $100 each way for this service. Transportation requests must be made at least two weeks prior to the scheduled transfer.

Payment We require a $100 deposit per session to reserve a spot at camp. This deposit is nonrefundable, but will be applied to your total balance. Full payment is required by June 1. After June 1, full payment will be due at the time of registration.

Refunds and Cancellations

Personal Property

All cancellations must be submitted in writing to the Summer Camp Director. Registration deposits are nonrefundable. Cancellations made before June 1 will be given a full refund (less the deposit). Cancellations made after this date, but before the first day of a registered camp session, will be given a 50% refund (less the deposit). No refunds will be given for cancellations after the first day of a registered camp session. Summer Camp material fees are nonrefundable and non-transferable after June 1. Airport Transportation fees are not refundable if made less than two weeks in advance of the scheduled transfer.

The Northwest School is unable to insure personal property, including equipment used in classes such as digital cameras. Campers, faculty, and guests absolve The Northwest School for all responsibility of theft, loss, or any damage to their personal property.

Class Size In order to provide for ample individual attention, enrollment is limited to 8 - 14 students per class. Maximum numbers will depend on the specific class. Instructors may also make exceptions at their discretion and in consultation with the Summer Camp Director.

Camper Conduct Campers are expected to contribute to a healthy and collaborative atmosphere of respect for themselves, others, and the environment. If your child displays aggressive or disruptive behavior or leaves campus without a note, we will ask you to remove your child from the program for the rest of the day. After discussing the situation with the guardian, NWS faculty will determine if your child may return. There is no refund for any student removed from the Summer Camp due to behavioral problems. There is no smoking allowed in the building or on the property. Additionally, NWS is an alcohol- and drug-free place. Those who break these rules (faculty or student) will be asked to leave the program. Campers’ parents and/or guardians are responsible for any damage or misconduct by their student.

Lunch/Snacks We will offer a fresh and nutritious lunch prepared daily by our professional kitchen team and served in our new dining hall located at 401 E. Pike. Each lunch will have vegetarian and gluten-free and dairy-free options. There will also be a camp store open on specified days with snacks for purchase. You may also pack a lunch and/or snacks for your child, but please note that we are a nut-free facility.

Sign-in/Sign-out Full Day campers and Half Day AM campers may be dropped off between 8:30 - 9:00 AM. Those arriving after this time must sign-in at the Summer Camp Office before proceeding to their class. Half Day AM campers must sign-out in the Summer Camp Office before departing for the day, and Half Day PM campers must sign-in prior to attending their Period 3 class. Please contact the Summer Camp Office to inform us of tardiness or planned absences: 206-816-6070.
