Minnekirken is a unique congregaƟon in that we have members and friends scaƩered all around the world, and yet there are moments we share no maƩer where we are—especially as we move toward PåskeƟd. In these moments we celebrate our shared life in Christ and the bonds of love and service in His name, the Name that holds us all together—like living stones in et åndelig hus. May the Holy Spirit of Christ be our strongest mortar. As Paul wrote: From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporƟng ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work (Ephesians 4:16).

Like Minnekirken, the church in Corinth was small, struggling with this and that challenge, but neither Paul, nor the Holy Spirit—or as Norwegians say, den hellige Ånd—were put oī by their

Looking Back About Two Thousand Years... How It Might Have Been.
As I menƟoned in this Kontakt’s front page devoƟon the connecƟon between 1 Corinthians, the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, and Minnekirken’s unique challenges in 2020 are quite strong. This is the year Minnekirken will have to take on a criƟcal reconstrucƟon project. 108 years have taken a signiĮcant toll on our mortar. Our gorgeous red brick façade and steeple were stabilized in 2019, but the real work has yet to begin. And
Jesus' Obituary Jesus, Son of Joseph and Mary, of Nazareth, died Friday on Mount Calvary, also known as Golgotha, The Place Of The Skull.
when I speak of real work, I’m not just thinking about structural engineers and restoraƟonists; as the pastor of Minnekirken, I am also thinking about our ongoing eīorts to build upon the foundaƟon that is Jesus! One of my favorite memories from this past Christmas was our Santa Lucia procession that featured some of our newest members and friends at Minnekirken! I truly believe that the Holy Spirit of Christ is the mortar by which God builds us up and holds us—God’s “living stones”—altogether. Though you may be hearing about fundraising from others in this issue of Kontakt, I urge you to pray a simple prayer with me over Lent, it’s a prayer Jesus urged of the Twelve. When Jesus was teaching His disciples about prayer in Luke 11, He began by sharing what we now know of as The Lord’s
Prayer; but He concludes with something that is the catalyst to all our prayers—our longing for the Holy Spirit to cement our relaƟonship with the Father. Jesus says: If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good giŌs to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! We learn a lot about prayer in Luke 11, but what we should learn above all that is that no prayer should be uƩered apart from our longing for the Holy Spirit to Ňow into our hearts and minds—infusing our every thought, word, and deed with grace! We will be praying throughout Lent for the Holy Spirit to Įll us, to found us more Įrmly upon Jesus, and to raise us up to be a temple of living stones, giving glory to God in all things! My sermon series over Lent into Easter celebrates the power of den hellige Ånd, as you can see in my topics for each Sunday... 2
The published death notice was circulated and celebrated by many citizens of Jerusalem. His band of followers had deserted him and left town to escape the possibility that the same could be demanded for them. Friends reported that Jesus was turned over to the Roman authorities by his close friend, Judas Iscariot. He was accused of declaring himself the King of the Jews, a crime against Rome. This crime against Rome and Caesar offended fellow synagogue members of Jerusalem, they demanded his crucifixion. Cause(s) of death were brought on by crucifixion. Crucifixion causes the shoulders to be torn from the body. The weight of the body, collapses on the upper torso and suffocation results. Extreme exhaustion and loss of blood were contributing factors. It was said by onlookers that he endured severe torture beyond limits any of them had ever seen. One witness reported that you could see his shoulders being slowly torn from the sockets. It was reported that many of the onlookers scoffed and yelled obscenities. One Roman tantalized him with soured wine on a dirty cloth which was rubbed on his lips. Jesus looked up and cried out to his father, then seemed to give up his life. Mid-afternoon, a Roman soldier plunged a spear into his side to insure that he was dead. His Mother, Mary witnessed his death as well as Mary of Magdala and his cousin John. Other than those three, he had few, if any, friends present at his execution. At about three o'clock there was a terrifying earthquake and darkness eerily befell the entire area! Some said it was a coincidence but a Roman soldier was heard to say that, "this man Jesus was truly the Son of God." Many temple members spat upon the soldier for his remark. Burial will be in a borrowed tomb which is owned by Joseph of Arimathea. No services are planned. The Governor said, "it will be forgotten and life will return to normal by tomorrow." 7
Bestemor’s Broche by Lynn Sove Maxson During my life, I have only met one grandparent. This was in 1947 when I was almost Įve . Emma Larsen was my mother’s mother and was visiƟng from Oslo. Her Įrst and last trip to America. She was a short determined or impressive woman. She had raised two children by being a tailor and was an acƟve leader in the Good Templar OrganizaƟon. Children’s groups were her specialty throughout Norway. We shared a room and chaƩed a lot, although neither of us understood the other. This was one of the few Ɵmes when I heard my parents speak Norwegian. There were so many quesƟons I had which were never answered. Through my many visits to Norway, my cousins shared info about Bestemor. You don’t mess with her and it is her way always. In her short Ɵme in Chicago we had bonded. Maybe I inherited a lot from her. My husband Tom might agree. Sewing and leadership stands out.

One of the giŌs I received from her was a beauƟful hand sewed Norwegian bunad, (tradiƟonal costume), and sølje ( silver pin with spoon petals worn with the bunad). My mother never wore jewelry or was interested in clothes. One thing which fascinated me about Bestemor was a rose cloisonné broche which she wore every day at her neck. When it was almost Ɵme for her to return, I noƟced mom was geƫng sad. The day mom and I took her to Union StaƟon to catch the train to New York was very hard on her. She knew that she wouldn’t see her again. This was when my dream of going to Norway started. Mom was so distracted as we seƩled Bestemor on the train, and then she stepped oī and was waving goodbye to her mother. That was when she spoƩed me behind her mother waving as the train started. Needless to say I didn’t make it to Norway with Bestemor! They stopped the train. Wearing Bestemor’s broche, which I inherited, Įlls me with happiness.

Church and Neighborhood Updates Happy Easter, God Påske! If you have not been in Church lately you have missed a mulƟtude of acƟviƟes at Minnekirken. Our big news is of course the renovaƟon of the facade of our beauƟful building. The City of Chicago awarded us $250,000 of the over $500,000 needed to restore the front of the Church. As common with buildings of this age, water is geƫng behind the bricks. Every brick needs to be removed, cleaned, numbered and put back aŌer the repair is done. We will keep everyone informed when this process will begin. We are undertaking a major fund raiser for this massive endeavor. Thank you to everyone who has parƟcipated in helping us meet our goals. This past year in December we said farewell to our beloved reƟring Honorary Norwegian Counsulate General, Paul Anderson. We are looking forward to working with Susan Meyer, our new Honorary Norwegian Consulate General. CongratulaƟons to our Treasurer MaƩ Nygaard for taking on the posiƟon of Treasurer for the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce. Here is some neighborhood news: -Our next door neighbor, The Grace Furniture building is moving forward with a hotel, banquet hall & rooŌop deck. ConstrucƟon should start next door. -Grace Methodist Church at the corner of Wrightwood & Kimball received a private donaƟon of $100,000 to Restore the front of their building. This is a very similar situaƟon to our structure. They were slated to become a housing development. Logan Square PreservaƟon stepped in to assist in this project. We are fortunate to have Landmark status.
Here is part of a descripƟon, using architect’s words, of our church’s exterior, from “Preliminary Summary of InformaƟon SubmiƩed to the Commission on Chicago Landmarks,“ 2019, by MaƩ Wicklund.
-The City of Chicago is sƟll talking about redesigning the Logan Square circle to make it more Pedestrian Friendly. This is supposedly scheduled for this year also.
The Gothic Revival style church building has a visually prominent locaƟon on Logan Square . . .
-Low income housing proposed by Alderman Rosa in the 35th Ward is moving forward. The site of this project is on EmmeƩ Street behind the Blue Line at Kedzie & Milwaukee. There will be approximately 100 units.
The red brick-clad and limestone-trimmed church has a rectangular footprint with a symmetrical front (east) elevaƟon that is deĮned by a central tower topped by an octagonal steeple and Ňanked by two shorter pedimented [gable top decoraƟon] towers with shorter steeples.
OUR BEAUTIFUL CHURCH IS HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT TO CHICAGO FOR CIC
-The Logan Square housewalk is scheduled for this fall which will include us opening our Church for viewing, providing that we are not under construcƟon at that Ɵme. This is always a great opportunity to visit some of the beauƟful homes in the area. We have in the past been the center for Ɵcket pickups and selling our famous waŋes. This is a lot of fun and brings energy and excitement to Easter 2020 Kontakt us. The trolley picks up people in front of the church and takes Contributors: them to the open houses. Thank you all for your support of our wonderful Church! Beverly Covyeau Council President Minnekirken

The central tower features the main entrance, which is set in a tall Gothic arch opening with columned archivolts [decoraƟve moldings around an arch] of carved limestone . . . A pair of projecƟng brick buƩresses visually support the corners of the central tower and extend up to a balcony-level stained glass window where they terminate in carved limestone scrolls. [BuƩresses help hold up the tall roofs and steeples used in church architecture to symbolize spiritual aspiraƟons.] The central tower has four gabled sides with corner turrets [liƩle ornamental towers] and rises above the church roof, where it terminates in a tall shingled steeple with copper pediments and Įnal Cross. Minnekirken, completed in1912, was designed by a talented Norwegian immigrant originally trained in bricklaying in Denmark, Charles F. Sørensen, He designed about 20 Chicago churches and was a popular architect for residential buildings as well. He was inspired for the design by the Bragernes church of the Gothic Revival style built in 1871 in Drammen, Norway. (pictured, left) 5
