With the success of both Fall Creek and Brookside, now comes the opening of The Oaks Academy, Middle School. The Oaks has demonstrated we can achieve positive results without sacrificing our mission and core values, and this will be no different for the middle school. Kelly Altman is the Head of School at The Oaks Academy, Brookside. She and husband, Michael, are parents to daughter, Marley, a recent Oaks graduate, and son Evan, who will be attending the new Oaks Academy, Middle School in fall 2015. A leader at The Oaks, and in the wider Indianapolis community, Kelly reflected on her roles and what leadership means to her.
On receiving the Indiana Business Journal’s Women of Influence award…
I feel privileged and humbled to be associated with such an esteemed group of professional women, who are making an enormous impact in the city. It is my desire to be a servant leader working to transform education and inspire others to live a life that reflects the fullness of God and the best in human nature. I try to live by a singular focus, to serve another—God, students, teachers, families and the school’s mission. Leadership requires courage and fortitude to make difficult decisions that are not always popular or welcomed. When teachers, parents, and students have confidence in school leaders to make thoughtful and difficult decisions based on principles, over time trust develops. True leadership rests on the foundation of trust.
On leading Brookside, The Oaks Academy’s second campus…
I am honored to work to extend the mission of The Oaks Academy beyond the walls of the original campus to more than 200 families in the Brookside area. When I first learned of The Oaks, I remember thinking that this school reflects the mission of my heart. I too am centered on living a life that mirrors the love of Christ. I love the classics, and believe racial and socioeconomic diversity are possible through Christ. I am motivated by our commitment to building a school community of diverse learners that are provided the opportunity to fall in love with Christ, and learn the rich truths found in a classical curriculum. I am grateful that we at The Oaks honor these things in the classroom and when relating to one another. I am especially grateful for the gift of spreading this mission to the Brookside community.
On being an Oaks middle school parent…
We have an outstanding middle school program. As the parent of a recent graduate, I marvel at how well the school has collaborated with me in preparing my daughter emotionally, spiritually and academically for her high school and young adult experience. We have had several opportunities to observe Marley acting on the ideals we have instilled as parents, which have been reinforced by the faculty and staff of The Oaks.

It is magnificent to have been selected as a 2015 Woodrow Wilson MBA Fellow in Educational Leadership. I applied to an MBA program to stretch myself well beyond what is necessary in day-to-day school leadership. I wanted to grow in my understanding of the business aspect of running a school. One of the reasons that I love education is because its purpose is completely forward thinking. At The Oaks, we invest in the future, nurturing the hearts and minds of students, and it is equally important for leaders of the school to invest in ourselves as well. All people are called to be transformed by the renewing of their minds.
