Luke Sugden plans to enjoy every moment while in the USA.

Global... Continued from 1 Meet Victor Garçonnot from Limoges, France. “Even if French and American culture are completely different, it has been really easy to switch thanks to Judy Parott and all the study abroad team,” Garçonnot said. “I already feel at home here at OSU.” OSU graduate student, Emilio Ramirez from Puebla, Mexico. “Transition into the USA and OSU has been really smooth, everyone is nice and welcoming,” Ramirez said.“Of course, I miss my home but I have made really good friends here. They remind me of the bright and exciting side of being an exchange student.. You get to know new people everyday who have a different perspective of the world and that makes you improve as a person.” Ramirez Emilio said this is not his first time in the United States. “I was a part of the Disney Exchange program back in 2018,” Ramirez said.“My very first contact with people from other countries. That opened my eyes and now my comfort zone has changed drastically.” Luke Sugden from Hertfordshire, England. “I am studying sports business management with an entrepreneurial focus in hopes to

achieve my career goal of supporting competitive athletes in marketing their brands online,” Sugden said. “So far, the transition to the USA has been a lot of fun, but I’m sure as the days go on, the homesickness will settle in. The people of OSU and Stillwater are incredibly welcoming, however, which will help me settle into my new home and continue enjoying every second.” Eszter Kasi from Budapest, Hungary. “During this summer I could not really believe that I would come to the US until the very last moment when I boarded my flight,” Kasi said. “It was a bit scary, but super exciting at once. Since I arrived I have met so many nice people and I am very grateful for it. Everybody is so welcoming and kind it feels unreal. Classes are quite different from the ones I had in Hungary or in France, but in a good way. They are much more interactive, and everybody is participating. I think I’ll enjoy it. The campus is just amazing, with all the possibilities we have here to do sports, have fun, eat out, etc. Of course I will miss my city, friends and family, but all the fun and the new experiences that I will have during my time at OSU will definitely compensate for it. I have a good feeling about this year.”

‘A block party’ Gundy urging players to take proper precautions as COVID-19 cases

Chris Becker Assistant Sports Editor Students are back on campus, and The Strip is back to being full at night. With cases COVID-19 cases rising throughout the country, this was a cause for concern for coach Mike Gundy. “I was driving home the other night, two or three nights ago, going the back way, going south where my house is and I drove across Sixth Street, and saw what I would call a block party,” Gundy said. “Students were welcoming themselves back. And that’s what we need to try to avoid as our guys.” With the Big 12’s new policy for the 2021 that will see teams forfeit games and receive a loss if they cannot play due to COVID-19, the health of players on OSU’s team is more important than ever. Gundy has sat the team down to have serious conversations about the ongoing and present pandemic. “I’ve had two serious discussions with them about the students back on campus now,” Gundy said. “And we know that the virus is present, it’s around, it’s everywhere. Last year we felt like they did a really good job of reducing their social interaction, which is extremely difficult at their age. “I shared with them, I think they’re gonna have to do it again.” Gundy said the Cowboys were up to 83% of the team being vaccinated, and could reach as high as about 93% due to some members being unable to receive the vaccine. Players are also pushing each other to do what they can to make sure the Cowboys are healthy come game day. Offensive lineman Jake Springfield has taken the route many other students and some other teammates have taken by taking all online classes to help stay healthy. “COVID is still a real thing, we are trying to be as careful as possible,” Springfield said. “We’re trying to push everyone to get vaccinated, wear a mask and be safe.” With OSU resuming in-person classes, and bars being back to full crowds the Cowboys are taking the proper precautions to make sure they stay healthy both from injury and sickness. “I think we’re doing good so that’s where we’re at now, moving forward and attitudes are great,” Gundy said.

Breaking the final wall

Missed opportunities cost Cowgirls in combat with Pittsburgh

Zachary Hunter Cowgirls go head-to-head against the Pittsburg Panthers at Neal Patterson Stadium on Sunday afternoon, August 22nd.

Ben Hutchens Digital Editor It’s one of the few parts of his job OSU soccer coach Collin Carmichael doesn’t like. Carmichael could only watch from his perch on the Cowgirl sideline

as OSU forward Gabriella Coleman attempted to head a cross from sophomore defender Alex Morris. The two players had connected on a similar play earlier in the game, but Coleman’s shot finished off target. This time, the result wasn’t the same, a regularity in OSU’s 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh. “Being a coach in those situations stinks because you’re absolutely helpless, you’re willing the ball into the net,” Carmichael said. “It’s frustrating… because it’s how you draw it up, and there’s the moment and in that moment, we just fell a little bit short.”

No. 16 OSU led Pittsburgh in shots, 15-11, but failed to convert any chances outside of a two-minute stretch where OSU senior Grace Yochum turned superhuman, scoring twice. Carmichael said he was disappointed more chances weren’t finished, but did not fault the effort of the players who fought to create those chances. He emphasizes both creating the chance and also finishing because the latter is so difficult to replicate. “On another day (Coleman) would have scored three,” Carmichael said. “She certainly had opportunities,

so I’m not going to fault her. She got in great positions, she’s willing to get in there and try and score.” Yochum said her team is creating chances and getting in position to score but was unable to break down the final wall. “It’s that final wall, it’s that final shot, it’s that composure,” Yochum said. “Finishing is the hardest thing in the sport, that’s why goals are so few and far between. Once we get that we’re going to be pretty good.” sports.ed@ocolly.com

RUNNING TO WIN! “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Co.4:1618 NIV) There are many things in this life that are temporary. Youth is temporary, so is our older years. Natural life itself is the same. We do everything we can to prolong it, but, alas, we leave this life. Our relationships are temporary. They will not be the same in the life to come. Someone has said, “Change is here to stay. Certainly, that is true in this life.

What is unseen is eternal! We are to fix our eyes on these. The troubles of this life are momentary, yet, they work something good; something eternal. For the true believer in Christ, the future's so bright. Our sins, which are many, have been completely forgiven. We have been “Born Again.” There is a new life within, to lead and strengthen us in the right way. We have a hope of a complete new body, and life with God in the world to come We cannot see it. Yet, as we look at the words of the Bible, it becomes real. God’s promises are sure, and will come in the right time. “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Col.3:24 NIV) Let the unseen realities motivate us in this temporary life.
