Cowboys lose after dropping three of final four matches Rowdy Baribeau Staff Reporter Following Wyatt Sheets’ decision victory at 157 pounds, No. 10 OSU held clear control. They led 12-0 after three matches. A trajectory familiar for the Cowboys as they had a similar bout against Northern Iowa two weeks ago with a similar lead. OSU would follow the same trajectory as they did against UNI, collapsing down the stretch and losing 21-20 against No. 12 Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. The Cowboys and Tigers started at 141 pounds, and Carter Young started the offense early. Young had two takedowns and a reversal along with securing riding time over Connor Brown, 7-3. No. 12 Allan Hart was the projected starter for Missouri, but was held out because of an undisclosed injury. No. 13 Kaden Gfeller secured the first bonus-point victory of the night over No. 23 Josh Edmond at 149, pinning him at 4:51 in the match. Gfeller continues to impress this season, extending his win streak to 12. Gfeller’s bonus point victory would be one of two bonus-point victories for the Cowboys, but the Tigers had significant bonus-point victories themselves. At 165, No. 10 Travis Wittlake and No. 2 Keegan O’Toole of Missouri were primed for the match of the night, and it didn’t disappoint. Both found themselves battling for riding time, but neither secured it. O’Toole started with a takedown followed by a Wittlake escape, and O’Toole maintained control of Wittlake to get a decision victory 3-2. In an upset, unranked 174-pounder Sean Harman battled No. 10 Dustin Plott. Plott found himself up early, but a strong third period boosted Harman over Plott 5-4. At 184 pounds, No. 11 Dakota Geer took on No. 24 Jeremiah Kent. Kent went scoreless on the board but came close to getting near-fall points on Geer along with a takedown. Geer used his strong defense as he got a reversal and a strong performance on top in the third to get riding time en route to a 3-0 decision victory. Despite a momentum-building win for No. 33 Luke Surber on Friday, he found himself in an irreversible situation against No. 19 Zach Elam. Surber, OSU’s heavyweight, got an early takedown on Elam and showed potential to control the match, but Elam pulled a reversal to get Surber on his back that eventually led to a pin with 35 seconds remaining in the first. The Elam name rang true in Sunday’s dual against OSU as the younger Elam, Rocky, the No. 9 ranked 197-pounder, defeated newcomer Gavin Stika. Stika’s points all came from escapes, whereas Rocky was able to get a few takedowns and stay on the offense to keep Stika from getting a good shot. No. 8 Trevor Mastrogiovanni was held out of the dual with a right ankle injury sustained in Friday’s dual. 125-pounder Alex Yokubaitis started against No. 18 Noah Surtin. Yokubaitis was dominated in the bottom position and only got points from escapes and Surtin was able to get a tilt that turned into a pin. Daton Fix, OSU’s 133-pounder, held control of Missouri’s Trey Crawford as he fought for a pin to tie the dual at 21. Fix’s only downfall in this match was the fact he kept scoring. Fix easily got the tech-fall on Crawford, winning 22-5, but it’s not what the Cowboys needed as they needed a fall to tie the dual.

Hammond impressed by hasty roster rebuild Baylor Bryant Staff Reporter Luke Hammond was on a team of his own. This past offseason, Hammond was the only returning player on OSU’s mens tennis team. A hasty roster retool with several incoming freshmen and transfers resulted in a short period of time together before the season started. But, OSU was able to build chemistry and succeed early as a team. Hammond said there is a key difference setting this new group apart compared to others. “The difference is everyone has come from somewhere where it has not quite worked out for them, so we all have a bond there,” Hammond said. “We all have something to prove, and we are all really motivated. It’s a new start for all of us. I’ve been here but it’s brand new for me.” Hammond said he is impressed by the team,
and how they have performed to start the season. “We haven’t had that much time together,” Hammond said. “Some of us were here in the fall, but four new guys came in the spring. So we all have to get ready pretty quick, and we’ve all bought into it and adapted. I only see this getting better with the matches to come.” The retooling was brought on by a new coaching staff. coach Dustin Taylor was named head coach June 2021, and assistant Dane Webb was chosen shortly after. “He has a path he wants to get to, but more importantly he’s looking out for us as people,” Hammond said. “Which is most important, so we’re all motivated to play for him because we know he has all of our backs.” Now in his final season at OSU, Hammond, the leader of the Cowboys, takes pride in guiding his teammates, on and off the court. “It’s a great privilege for me to be able to lead this team,” Hammond said. “It’s my final year so I
always said to coach that from the start that I want to leave it in a better place than I’ve found it. Automatically they feel like they can come to me and I’m always willing to help.” Hammond said he believes in his teammates, his coach and the culture that they all have created at OSU. “The thing I look forward to most, is that a lot of people are going to underestimate us as we’re a new team, and fresh,” Hammond said. “I think all of us can do a lot of damage to teams if we keep coming together as we have been doing. I think we’re going to come up with a lot of upsets, it’s exciting.”

sports Former second baseman Lopez dies at 50 Daniel Allen Staff Reporter On Sunday, Roberto Lopez, a former Oklahoma State baseball standout, died at the age of 50. Lopez primarily played second base under Hall of Fame coach Gary Ward from 1992-94, posting a .310 batting average during his time with the Cowboys. OSU made the College World Series in Lopez’s sophomore season in 1993, finishing third with Lopez being a vital piece in OSU’s run. Lopez also ranks No. 9 all-time in stolen bases in OSU history with 65 during his three seasons with the Cowboys. He set a Big Eight Conference and OSU record in the 1994 season with a 10-game hitting streak, along with a .364 batting average, 33 stolen bases and a spot on the NCBWA All-America second-team. He also lead the Cowboys in both runs and hits. Lopez declared for the MLB draft after his junior season and was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the sixth round. He played four seasons in the MLB, posting a .269 batting average, 288 hits and nine home runs during his professional career.

SINCE 1957,
WHEN IS LITTLE MUCH?
There is a short chorus that has encouraged me many times. “Little is much if God is in it. Labor not for wealth or fame. There’s a crown and you can win it. If you go in Jesus’ name.”

The woman, who poured the precious ointment on Jesus just before he was crucified, was criticized for “wasting” this expensive item. Yet, Jesus said everywhere the gospel is preached this woman’s action would be told. (Mk 14:3-9) Little things mean a lot as we are willing to serve the Lord. Paul mentions many in Romans 16 who helped him. The Good Samaritan stopped to help the man beaten and robbed. (Lu.10:30-37) Paul writes as you have opportunity, do good to all men, especially to other believers.(Gal.6:10) When the poor widow dropped the two pennies, all that she had, into the temple offering. Jesus said she gave more the large offerings given. Her “large giving” was in relation to what she had. (Mk.12:41-44)
Many people may plan to give when they receive a great amount of money, but that large amount of money may never come. We may plan to give time or talent to a project when we have more time, but that perfect time arrangement may never happen. Again, the apostle Paul encourages us “as you have opportunity, do good to all men.” We never know when a little gesture of kindness, with money, or helping in an area of service, spending a little time with a person, a word of encouragement, will be just the action that will be a great help to someone. These can be practical ways of living out the Lord’s challenge to love one another. This is the fulfilling of the many commandments in the Bible: loving people by word and action.

What to watch this Valentine’s Day
Connor Gray Staff Reporter Valentine’s Day is approaching, and that means it’s time to find the perfect movie to watch with your significant other. For those who are struggling with what to watch this holiday, look no further than this list of recommendations. “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” This 2004 dramatic romance film stars big names like Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood, telling the story of a man heartbroken about his girlfriend undergoing a procedure to erase him from her memory. In retaliation, he chooses to do the same thing. As his memories of her begin to fade, he faces a dilemma: he still loves her. Is it too late to fix the mistake he has set in motion?
“Licorice Pizza” More recently, “Licorice Pizza” is a 2021 romantic comedy from award-winning director Paul Thomas Anderson. Set in California in the ‘70s, the film follows Gary Valentine, a successful actor in high school, as he falls in love with Alana Kane in the San Fernando Valley. With great direction, acting and writing throughout, this is one of my favorite romantic comedies. “Pretty Woman” A beloved classic, “Pretty Woman” stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. The film tells the story of a millionaire entering a business contract with a Hollywood Street hooker. He inevitably falls in love with her, and they attempt to navigate the hurdles that come with their different lifestyles. “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and
Julianne Moore lead the cast in this film about a man realizing his wife has been unfaithful and wants to end the marriage. This forces Carell’s character Cal to enter the world of dating as a 40-year-old, under the guidance of a young, self-styled player named Jacob (Ryan Gosling) who takes him under his wing. “Love Actually” In what is considered the ultimate romantic comedy to some, the 2003 romantic comedy “Love Actually” boasts a loaded cast of stars like Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson and Andrew Lincoln. The film follows 10 love stories that, unknowingly to those involved, are linked with one another in some way.
