Behind its 1890’s façade, this unique facility offers an outstanding contemporary environment in which to learn and study. In addition to a full programme covering all aspects of jewellery, silversmithing, horology and gemmology, the School has an enviable range of traditional and cutting edge equipment and technology, which students can access, and is the largest School of its kind in Europe. We are delighted to launch this year’s selection of courses at Birmingham City University’s renowned School of Jewellery, based in the heart of the historic Jewellery Quarter. These courses are a very important part of the School’s wide portfolio of education and training. They offer the opportunity to anyone involved in the jewellery or creative industries to learn highly specialised techniques and approaches in a relatively short time frame. In keeping with our reputation we have once again engaged some of the very best tutors from industry and academia.

Articulation and Riveting: Making Movement Suzanne Ettrick | 2 & 3 July 2014 | ÂŁ320

Use this new two day course to explore the techniques for adding movement to your work using hot and cold mechanical joints. On the first day the tutor will demonstrate riveting and articulation methods, then set you a design challenge to create a set of necklet components. You will consider shape, movement and the collaboration of materials to create a finished linked, movable and wearable piece of jewellery. Metal and a variety of other materials such as leather, card and plastic may be used and you may bring some materials of your own to discuss their possibilities for use with the tutor. This course may also be of interest to those choosing to upcycle materials in their work and it is suitable for those who already have basic jewellery making skills. Suzanne Ettrick is a graduate of the School of Jewellery Birmingham, who has extensive trade experience, largely working in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter for over 15 years as a Fine Jeweller and Model Maker. Suzanne undertakes specialist trade commissions and has completed work on parts of the Paul Smith Jewellery range and occasionally works on the St Petersburg collection of FabergĂŠ Eggs. She also teaches a wide range of skills across all levels on a variety of practical courses involving her areas of expertise and has taught at the School of Jewellery for

Concept Drawing for Jewellers and Silversmiths Mark Lewis | 23-25 July 2014 | Course fee: ÂŁ360 Learn how to develop your drawing skills for sketching jewellery and silversmithing concepts, from professional rough layouts to finished renderings using wet and dry colour approaches with a variety of media. The first day concentrates on how to develop your concepts through sketching and drawing using innovative and sometimes unorthodox graphical techniques. The emphasis of day two is how to communicate your concepts through the use of techniques and different graphical conventions for modelling form and creating simple shadow, reflection and material surface effects including experimentation with mixed-media approaches with a variety of graphical tools and materials. On the final day of the course, using different viewpoints learnt you will complete one or more design renderings which can be applied to you own work. By the end of the course you will have discovered a myriad of techniques for confidently working up your own ideas to a professional presentation standard.

Mark Lewis is a graduate of the School of Jewellery, with a degree in 3-Dimensional Design, he has won several national design awards and he has worked for major jewellery manufacturer Tony Laws Studio in London. In 1981 Mark established his own studio in London and was until recently a principal lecturer at Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design. Mark also teaches part-time at Goldsmiths Centre amongst others and he continues his freelance design practice and consultancy Drawing First. Mark has a particular interest in drawing currently exploring contemporary approaches in both metalsmithing and fine art contexts, which led to an exhibition of his work this year at the School of Jewellery entitled Drawing the Line.

This course provides a unique and fascinating opportunity for those wishing to take the first stepping-stones into a Gemmology career. This accredited hands-on five day course offers you the chance to learn the basics of gemmology in simple, easy-to-understand language. During the course you will handle a sample set of gemstone specimens and learn identifications skills using small standard gem testing equipment. You will also be provided with tools and videos. Once you’ve completed the course you will receive a certificate recognising you as a Coloured Gem Associate of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. There are no entry requirements, this course is open to all. Davina Dryland is a professional geologist and gemmologist. A mineral and gemstone enthusiast from an early age, Davina has travelled extensively to experience the local geology of many countries, and visited Natural History Museums around the world. Davina has jewellery making, stone setting and stone carving experience and she has her own mineral and jewellery business Rocks Galore Ltd. She lectures to a wide variety of groups on all aspects of geology, and teaches gemmology regularly at the School of Jewellery. 18

The internet is a powerful marketing tool for makers and your tutor will demystify the use of websites, blogs and social media for marketing, in clear and accessible language and put an end to your anxiety about using the internet to connect with your customers. This course has been developed to assist beginners or those already blogging. Day one: Essential Tactics: Discover how to take advantage of the internet’s low or no-cost tools to promote your work by using a blend of tactics to get your sales message across effectively without losing hours and patience in the process. You will learn several techniques to help you build your on-line presence, such as increasing your base of ‘likes’ and ‘followers’, using email newsletters effectively and how offering newsworthy items increases your on-line presence. This fascinating new three day course will be an exploration of the techniques for mixing metals, how a collaboration or interaction from metal sheet or wire at the melting stage can create fabulous organic results. The course essentially offers you the opportunity to invent your own marriage of metals. Keum Boo is the traditional Korean surface embellishment technique of fusing 24ct gold foil onto silver to add a rich gold colour to your jewellery or vessel. Photographing your Jewellery – A basic guide

Rob Popper | 7 & 8 July 2014 | £350 / Course places limited to 8 Whilst this course does not endeavour to make you a professional jewellery photographer in two days, in this limited time you will gain a basic understanding of the processes involved in taking a good photograph of jewellery, understand how to edit it successfully with Photoshop and obtain invaluable tips of the trade from a jewellery specialist professional photographer. With tutor guidance you will use your own digital camera to take several shots of your own jewellery/item, during which time you will obtain an overview of how to set up your work and consider backgrounds. The tutor will also discuss useful camera and lighting accessories such has reflectors or diffusers and advise how the use of correct lighting can be more important than an expensive camera. Step-by-step guidance will provide an essential basic introduction to editing photographs with Adobe Photoshop enabling you to create images suitable for use. Silversmithing: An Introduction to Hand Raising

This four day workshop has been designed for those requiring a basic introduction to silversmithing. Students will take part in a step-by-step guided project with the tutor, making a shallow bowl with a simple base in order to make use of and practise basic silversmithing techniques such as Blocking, Raising, Planishing, Soldering and Annealing. You may borrow basic hand tools from the School or make a local purchase, a list will be provided prior to the course. Samantha Chilton has been working in jewellery, silversmithing and creative industries for over 25 years, and has been involved in all areas of the creative process, ranging from design through to final manufacture. Samantha is a School of Jewellery graduate silversmith and jeweller who also specialises in the application and finishing processes of materials such as decorative anodised aluminium, coloured titanium and patinated metals. Stonesetting: An Introduction Nigel Yates | 7-11 July 2014 | ÂŁ495

This popular introductory course is designed for those who have little or no experience of stonesetting who wish to learn basic styles of Channel, Claw, Rub-Over and other settings, along with essential tool preparation and maintenance. Your course fee includes a set of nine cast silver rings of various styles with appropriate cubic zirconium stones, which you will work on and practise setting during the course, by the end of the week you will have set stones into a variety of settings that you will be able to take home. Additional stonesetting kits may be purchased if desired at a cost of £80. You will be required to bring your own hand tools, a list will be provided prior to the course. This course does not cover making mounts for stones; this is an entirely different skill using traditional jewellery making techniques which are covered in our Jewellery Fine Techniques short course. Due to the intensity of this course student places are limited to nine. Nigel Yates has been working in the jewellery industry and Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter since 1984, specialising in stonesetting and laser welding. He has extensive trade knowledge and expertise and he carries out private and trade commissions, and regularly teaches specialised short courses. 34

Successful Silver Soldering Carlton Campbell | 23 June 2014 | £180

Soldering silver is an essential technique that can be difficult and time consuming to master successfully. During this one day course you will learn how to prepare the metal (sterling silver) in the correct way by annealing, which types of silver solder and flux are suitable for different types of work, how to make a perfectly fitting form and the use of acid to clean the oxidisation. The tutor will then show you how to produce a neat solder join and you will then practise soldering metal pieces and cleaning the soldered items ready for polishing. By the end of the day you will have received many ‘hints and tips of the trade’. This course is suitable for anyone who would like to learn how to solder with confidence. No previous knowledge of jewellery making is required. Carlton Campbell has more than 40 year’s trade experience as a jewellery mounter, he completes work for Toye Kenning & Spencer one of the country’s leading regalia jewellers who manufacture many bespoke hand-made jewels for large organisations and individuals, and he makes his own range of jewellery. He has also taught a variety of short courses at the School of Jewellery over the last 12 years.

Wax Modelling & Cuttlefish Casting An Introduction Cassie Reed | 28-30 July 2014 | £350

Casting is an excellent way of rapidly producing duplicates from a master item or model which can be made in a variety of materials. Use this course to explore the basic methods for modelling in wax and metal and learn the basic principles of casting simply using a low-cost Cuttlefish as your mould. To begin, with tutor guidance you will create a small simple metal model using traditional jewellery making techniques, the tutor will demonstrate how to prepare the model to the appropriate finish needed and suitable positioning of the sprue. You will prepare the cuttlefish mould using your model and you will be shown
