Roosevelt (President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s uncle) had one of the largest Hudson River iceboats built - called “Icicle.” She was the largest and fastest iceboat on the river in that era.

N. CURRIER AND CURRIER & IVES As readers of Portfolio know, The Old Print Shop has handled original Currier & Ives lithographs for over 100 years. My grandfather, Harry Shaw Newman, along with Harry T. Peters and Charles Messer Snow, published the original Best Fifty Large Folio Currier & Ives Lithographs in 1932. It was such a success that the next year they did the Best Fifty Small Folio Currier & Ives Lithographs. The popularity of Currier & Ives lithographs continues today with many new collectors becoming interested in these stunning images. The firm of Currier & Ives was founded in 1834 by Nathaniel Currier and a man named Stodart. James Merritt Ives became a partner in 1857 and over their 73-year history produced over 7,000 different titles. The founder, Nathaniel Currier, was a trained lithographer, his partner, James Merritt Ives, was a bookkeeper who proved himself as a talented draftsman. Other artists and lithographers who worked for the firm include Fanny F. Palmer, John Cameron, Louis Maurer, Thomas Worth, J Schultz, Daniel W. Logan, Napoleon Sarony, Charles Parsons, Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, and George Durrie If you are interested in American historical prints, I recommend you join the American Historical Print Collectors Society. Originally founded by a group of Currier & Ives collectors in 1975, the society has a broad reach for any and all printmaking 100 years or older. It publishes four newsletters and two issues of the scholarly publication Imprint a year, as well as hosting annual and regional meetings. Membership starts at $50 a year. https://ahpcs.org/membership/

Good condition and color. Conningham #2624. #99006-1 $20,000.00 A very rare Currier & Ives lithograph and an important crew racing item. “. . . .After much deliberation and discussion, it was at last decided to send a four-oared crew to meet Oxford. The crew sailed for Liverpool on July 10, and on their arrival were given quarters which proved to be well suited to their needs. The London rowing club immediately placed their boats and boat houses at the disposal of the Harvard men and treated them with great civility. The Harvard crew worked with great zeal to perfect themselves, for they saw clearly that they had a great undertaking on their hands, and that they were to row under great disadvantages. An immense crowd gathered on the 27th of August to witness the great event. The two boats came out about five o’clock in the afternoon, and at the word from the starter the crews were off, Harvard rowing 46 to Oxford’s 40. Harvard at once took the lead and held it for two miles, but it was then evident that Oxford’s reserve power was much greater, as she soon lessened the distance between the boats, and took a good lead which she kept to the finish, crossing the line six seconds ahead of the Harvard crew. Although defeated, the Harvard men received much praise for their pluck and perseverance.” Unknown writer January 7, 1889.
