LINDA ADATO (1942-2021) The Old Print Shop, Inc. was saddened to hear of the passing of the artist, Linda Adato on May 7, 2021. The shop is proud to have represented Linda for the past twenty-five years. Her ability to use subtle colors and print “a la Poupee” (meaning all the color printed on one plate) was remarkable. She is considered one of the true masters of printing a la Poupee. The exhibition will include over 150 prints, monotypes, and paintings by the artist and is a retrospective exhibition featuring work from every period of her life as an artist. “The beauty of art is that it never leaves us and enriches populations long after the artist has passed on.” Artist’s statement: “I love the process of etching, of working the plate through the stages of hard ground, line etching, using aquatint for tones and soft ground for texture. Taking a proof at each stage you can see where you’ve gone and what can be. I start the image abstractly from the geometries of things around me, their configuration of line, form, shadow, etc. In the journey from drawing to final print, I do not so much execute the initial idea as I develop it in the course of the intaglio process. I am sometimes surprised by the “realistic” image.” EXHIBITION OCTOBER 5 TO NOVEMBER 7, 2021, IN OUR SECOND FLOOR GALLERY. ALL ARE WELCOME TO COME TO THE GALLERY. PLEASE WEAR A MASK.

Linda was born in England on October 24, 1942. She first studied at Hornsey College of Art in Haringey, England, which is renowned for its experimental approach to art and design. She emigrated to the United States in 1962 and studied at UCLA receiving her Masters of Art in Art Education. While living in California, she met and married Albert Adato. They moved to the East Coast in 1973 and lived for many years in New Rochelle before moving to Brooklyn. Linda was a master of color intaglio. Her work is distinctive for its delicate synthesis of composition, subtle use of color, classical elegance, and her personal interpretation of the architecture of New York City; chambers and ancient ruins in Spain, Italy, Turkey; and her own backyard in New Rochelle and later Brooklyn. She continuously made color etchings for over thirty years. In later years she began using two plates each printed a la poupee. Her subtle use of color, together with her precise wiping of each section of her compositions, demonstrates her technical perfection in this process. Her prints have been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. She received many awards from institutions including the National Academy of Design, the Society of American Graphic Artists, Boston Printmakers, Print Club of Albany, Audubon Artists, and Connecticut Graphics Arts Center. Linda has work in the Permanent Collections of The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco; British Museum; Bruce Museum; Corcoran Gallery of Art; DeCordova Museum; Detroit Institute of Arts; Duxbury Art Complex Museum; Mississippi Museum of Art; National Museum of Women in the Arts; New York Public Library; Newark Public Library; Portland Art Museum, among others. Linda was commissioned by the Albany Print Club, New York, to create its 2009 Presentation Print. In 2010 she received a commission from the West Shore Graphic Arts Society, Muskegon, Michigan, for an edition of twenty-five prints. She was awarded the Gold Medal of Honor at the 58th Annual Exhibition of Audubon Artists in 2000. Linda served on the board of The Society of American Graphic Artists, a national organization of fine art printmakers, for many years, holding positions of board member, treasurer, and president from 2007-2010. She was also a member of the Boston Printmakers, Audubon Artists, and a lifetime member of The Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan, Connecticut, where she taught printmaking.
