Members of the O’Neal Community: In June, official notification of the renewal of our dual accreditation with the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) was received. Every five years this accreditation requires a self-study focusing on our mission, philosophy, curriculum and educational environment. In March 2011, a team of faculty and administrators from peer schools visited O’Neal to examine the work in the self-study. Of the parents, alumni, students, faculty and staff who participated in this year long process we thank you. A few highlighted commendations noted by the visiting team are: • An excellent sense of a caring and committed community that is felt and referenced by students, parents and faculty • A commitment to a challenging curriculum to inspire life-long learners • Academic studies and initiatives that prepare students for 21st Century educational experiences The information placed in this visiting team’s report will be helpful in our strategic planning process in the future. A tag line once used by O’Neal not too long ago was “Prepare for College, Prepare for Life”. As the world consistently becomes smaller and technology becomes greater… preparing students for life takes on a role different from earlier generations. While our faculty and staff are working hard to concentrate on college preparedness, they are also focusing on preparing each student for future success in life. Leading into our 40th year celebration of transforming lives, let us take this year to absorb how O’Neal was founded by a group of parents who wanted their children to experience an independent school education close to home. It is with great pride and gratitude we dedicate the 2011-2012 school year to the founding families. Through their vision we have The O’Neal School today. I hope you enjoy reading the summer issue of The O’Neal Magazine and I look forward to seeing you on campus in the very near future.

Wow! What a year of great excitement everyone experienced during the 2010-2011 school year. Whether it was the seniors greeting their little buddies as they arrived at McMurray Hall on opening day, the launch of the new website in October or the dedication of the cartwheel kids sculpture outside of Hannah Center in May, last year will go down in the record books as one of the finest at O’Neal.
“The Murder Room”
The O’Neal Fund and O’Neal’s annual auction: Forty and Fabulous – together raised over $425,000 in cash which enabled O’Neal to close the gap between tuition and endowment in the operating budget this past year. The O’Neal Fund, like in many independent schools, is the life-line to providing the best educational experience for the students. Last year it provided us the means to present programs like Living with Wolves, produce of The Murder Room, staged by the Upper School and send Middle School students to the regional Science Olympiad in Fayetteville. One special effort was the “Fund a Need” live auction item that totaled $44,000 for faculty professional development given by a group of auction attendees. Thanks to everyone who supported the O’Neal Fund and /or the Forty and Fabulous annual auction. You are appreciated for making O’Neal the best independent school in the Sandhills. ________________________________________________ As of June 30, 2011 $762,828 was attained in cash and pledges through the Bradshaw Challenge. The funds received directly assist the debt obtained in building the Hannah Center. Opened in 2008, the Hannah Center houses a 700seat gym which is near capacity most Friday evenings during volleyball and basketball seasons and the 250-seat theater where school gatherings and fine art productions are held. Many thanks go to Jean and Stan Bradshaw for offering the challenge.

3rd Annual O’Neal Varsity Softball Challenge
On May 6th, the third annual O’Neal varsity softball challenge was held. Alumni, faculty, staff and varsity baseball parents teamed up to play against the O’Neal varsity baseball team. In addition to recognizing baseball’s seniors, the event was followed by a hotdog supper hosted by the Booster Club and baseball parents.

1994 Vanessa LeLiever Murray, is working as account director with Heinz Marketing in Redmond, WA. She and her husband, Brent live in Kirkland, WA with their two sons Conner and Carson and pet black lab, Champ. 2002 Doughton Horton lives in Raleigh, NC. He is a founding attorney at Horton & Stephenson, which started up in October 2010. 2009/2010 Elizabeth Hart ‘09 accompanied Lizzie Snow ‘10 as her groom at a recent cross country event where she won second place in the novice division riding Lizzie’s older gelding, Pop Star while Lizzie had the opportunity to ride Coak Creek, an 11- year old thoroughbred gelding previously ridden by Olympic bronze medalist, Amy Tyron.

Update Your Information 2010 Blair Puleo is a rising sophomore at UNC Chapel Hill and competes on the varsity rowing team. As Miss Moore County, Blair recently represented Moore County in the Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant in June. She won a nonfinalist talent award for her ballet en pointe performance to “The Dance of the Swans” from “Swan Lake”.

O’Neal Scholarship Recipients Three rising ninth graders have been chosen to receive four-year scholarships. Jarred Jenkinson, an eighth grade student from Spring Hill Middle School in Laurinburg, has been awarded the Helen Pringle Holmberg Scholarship. Emma Marie Wilkinson; also attending Spring Hill Middle School, has been awarded the Nuzzo Family Foundation Scholarship. Lara Allen; from West Pine Middle School in West End, is the recipient of the Hannah Marie Bradshaw Scholarship.
at O’Neal are considered. Emma Marie Wilkinson, O’Neal’s twelfth Nuzzo Scholar, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Wilkinson of Laurinburg. Emma plays the flute in her school band and provides community outreach with her church youth group. She enjoys playing volleyball and has acquired a love for the French language.
The Nuzzo, Holmberg, and Bradshaw Scholars are selected based upon the students’ demonstration of scholastic ability, leadership potential and strength of character. The scholarship process included an extensive application with essays and an interview with members of O’Neal’s Board of Trustees and O’Neal’s Headmaster, Alan Barr. The Hannah Marie Bradshaw Scholarship is given in memory of Hannah Marie Bradshaw. Hannah spent half of her life as an O’Neal student, and she loved the School as a positive place that helped her reach her true potential. Students not currently enrolled at O’Neal are considered. Lara Allen, the sixth recipient of the scholarship, is the daughter of Ms. Lisa Allen Webster, of Pinehurst. Lara is a cheerleader and participates in her school’s chorus. The Helen Pringle Holmberg Scholarship is given in honor of Helen Holmberg, an O’Neal graduate and the school’s first John Motley Morehead Scholarship recipient. Helen’s father, the late Centre W. Holmberg, Jr., served as chairman of O’Neal’s Board of Trustees. Current O’Neal students as well as students from other schools are considered. Jarred Jenkinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Jenkinson of Laurinburg, becomes the thirteenth Holmberg Scholar. Jarred plays trombone in his school band and qualified for the 2011 Southeastern All District Band. He also plays baseball. Jarred is the first nonO’Neal student to have been awarded the Holmberg Scholarship.

What’s New in the Upper School for 2011-2012? • A new daily class schedule has been developed • The Honor Council, under the guidance of the new Dean of Students, David Wood, begins a new era of leadership history of the Upper School. • Study Abroad Activities: -- For the first time at O’Neal School, two Upper School students will participate in a semester abroad: Maggie Jackson to Vigo, Spain and Savannah Merritt to Bordeaux, France. -- The Morcom family will be hosting Uxia, a sophomore girl from Vigo, Spain, for the whole school year. -- Two week exchange program with a school in France - 15 host families are needed around Easter 2012.

Lower School Happenings
The Lower School participated in its own O’Nealopoly reading competition. Classrooms won different activities hosted by O’Neal teachers, staff and parents depending on the total amount of reading conducted by each class. O’Neal had two Odyssey of the Mind teams this year. Each team was able to perform their skits in front of the Lower School students at assembly. Below (L-R): Teams “Full Circle” and “As Good as Gold...berg” both placed second in Division I competition qualifying them to go to state competition.

Athletics O’Neal finished its third year as a part of the CFIC Conference with a strong appearance in spring sports. Highlights to the season were a third place conference finish with boys’ varsity tennis as well as third place medals from track runners Aleksandra Majka in the 100m hurdles and Austin Puleo in 800m. Majka set a new O’Neal School record in her event and Puleo set a new personal record and school 2nd place record.

O’Neal Summer Fun
O’Neal’s campus was alive and busy as O’Neal Summer Fun hosted many different camps for O’Neal and non-O’Neal youth in the community. There were 275 registrations for the O’Neal Summer Fun camps. In addition to the traditional Falcon Day Camp, other camps offered a variety of sports, science, the outdoors, math, cheerleading, music, dance, a preschool day camp and more. Programs were available for youth of all ages. 20

Thursday, August 25th ~ Annual All-School PA Fall Picnic ~ An Afternoon of Sports with 6pm Cookout & DJ Always held on a busy game day for Falcon sports, join us after school to cheer on O’Neal’s teams as they take on Carolina Friends School. An all-school cookout will begin at 6 PM. Don’t miss this annual, free, family-oriented event! Tuesday, August 30th ~ PA Meeting ~ 8:15am After drop off, join us for the PA’s first meeting of the school year in the Dining Commons in Bradshaw Hall. Come hear the different ways to get involved at O’Neal and meet other parents.
