Senate considers amendments to ECOS constitution BY CAIT DUFFY Asst. Quickie Editor During an ECOS meeting April 21, the senate discussed regular business, voted on updates to the constitution and settled the GPA debate. In attendance were the representatives of the Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Kappa, Nu, Omega and Iota complexes, as well as the two commuter representatives. Alpha Senator Rhemy Brezin, Zeta Senator Derek Kelly and Sigma Senator Kendal Hansen were absent. The meeting began lightheartedly enough, with Chinese food and laughter during discussion of the RespECt video contest, which has been postponed until next semester. Talk then centered on the proposed mirrors to be placed on building corners around campus, to increase visibility for long-boarders, bikers and golf carts. Conversation then turned to updates and amendments for the ECOS constitution. The constitution will now be considered as “rolling,â€? meaning that it will no longer be updated year by year, but instead will be updated as needed. BP, others get away “Scottâ€? free Fla. governor encouraged to hold oil companies accountable BY SEAN LAWLOR Staff Writer
BP recovery efforts in the Gulf of Mexico.

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since the Gulf of Mexico was suddenly hit by the worst environmental disaster in its history. Despite more than 200 million barrels of oil dumped into our oceans leading to a dramatic blow to Florida’s tourist based economy, some Floridians seemed to shrug their shoulders, more worried about the pain at the gas pump rather than an ecological disaster that will have profound impacts on our state for decades. $IWHU WKH ÂżUVW GD\V RI RXU QHZ JRYHUQRUÂśV elected position, we have already witnessed Rick Scott’s lion-like persona in his political actions. So I want to make sure we get our claim ready, we go right and talk to BP.â€? After Scott recently shelled out $25,000 from taxpayers to pay for ambiguous consultation charges, I think litigation costs should be the least of our worries. What does Scott expect to gain for Florida by having a little negotiation tea party with BP’s executives? Sounds like a case closed decision to me, where BP is allowed to get off “Scottâ€? free without any reparations for Florida’s tourist businesses and ÂżVKHUPHQ 7KH RQO\ WKLQJ WKLV ZLOO DFFRPSOLVK LV WR send a message to BP that it can continue its feckless actions unabated by state protection. While it may seem as if the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has a strong grip on what is going on in popular media, there is no denying that American culture has become incredibly sexually charged. Sex sells. And in today’s world, it seems to be selling almost everything. If you get the same meal frequently from a bunch of different restaurants, with different recipes and ingredients, it still isn’t as special as when you get it from your favorite restaurant. Now imagine that as a metaphor for intercourse. Special things just aren’t as special when you get them all the time from a lot of places. have four brides compete to have the best wedding. The winning wedding receives a dream, all expenses paid honeymoon. But at what cost? When weddings compete, the televised ceremony focuses on the wrong things. It becomes about the food, the setting, the decorations, the attire and so on. Not the vows, nor the acknowledgement of two people who (hopefully) truly love each other. A wedding shouldn’t be judged, it should be praised and celebrated. Romantic love has been cheapened and seems to be dying in today’s society. What happened to it all? Where did the good old days go?

During last weekend’s Spring Ball afterparty, Kappa Ball, not a single incident report for vandalism arose from Kappa. $FURVV FDPSXV WZR ¿UH DODUPV

Instead, he had written a note on the area of wall his foot had spared. “I did this, I’ll pay for it,â€? it read. It’s college, there’s going to be collateral damage. We should at least be able to admit when it’s our fault. If we do so, there should be a reward. Currently, we encourage use of silent witness by rewarding those who do so; tell Campus Safety ZKR YDQGDOL]HG \RXU GRUP DQG WKH\ won’t charge you for damages. Instead of rewarding what some may see as snitching, why don’t we encourage and promote taking responsibility for one’s mistakes? Those who come forward about damages or vandalism could be rewarded with a reduced penalty. After all, if taking responsibility for your mistakes is better than sitting back and eventually getting caught, shouldn’t the consequences UHĂ€HFW WKDW" Friday, April 29, 2011

Ahead of the pack: one woman’s circus adventures BY FOREST BALDERSON Contributing Writer Vicki Adema began her career as a fashion buyer in New York City and Chicago. Today, she is the primary buyer for the animals of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circuses. She buys everything from hay and sawdust for elephants to frozen mice and rats for the snakes to eat. “You wake up one morning and go to work and suddenly you need a snake heating pad, immediately, in Binghamton [New York], Adema says. Adema works for Feld Entertainment in Palmetto, Fla., which owns the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, as well as Disney On Ice and Feld Motor Sports. Her job is to ensure cities are ready for the arrival of the circus animals—a job that usually requires coordinating circuses in photo by Forest Balderson
three different cities every week. Karen Bowser, an 8-year veteran of procurement and sourcing for Feld Entertainment, says Adema goes above and beyond to learn about the animals and their needs. “It is obvious she has commitment and has concern, says Bowser. “She has visited the [Ringling Bros.] Center for Elephant Conservation, on her own time, numerous times. Adema tries to use local vendors in every city. “The mom-and-pop landscapers are shocked when I call and ask for branches for the elephants to play with or logs for the tigers to use as scratching posts, she says. Elephants, by the way, prefer timothy hay as well as a weekly diet per elephant of 24 loaves of unsliced wheat bread, 100 pounds of carrots, 45 apples, 45 pounds combined of potatoes, corn and red grapes and a half bundle of sugar cane. They also
need a pedicure once every three weeks. And then there are all the vet supplies, cleaning products and vitamins to procure. The one people-product she buys is 10,000 to 40,000 pounds of ice a day for snow cones. “It’s just fascinating setting up a city within a city,â€? she says. What’s your definition of “hooking upâ€?? Why do we put ourselves through all this confusion, awkward conversation after awkward conversation? You can’t just assume they had sex because that would make it seem like you think they’re promiscuous. <RXU SUREOHP LV D OLWWOH PRUH GLIÂżFXOW ,I VRPHRQH KDV DQ LVVXH ZLWK D friend, he or she should just blatantly ask. If it’s a girl you’re interested in, you don’t want to offend her. But, if you ask around, even if you ask her friends, it’s still just rumors and word of mouth. If you are going to ask someone, make sure it is a reliable source. Or, take the plunge and ask her yourself. As for anyone else in the awkward situation of wondering how much or how little has gone on behind closed doors, communication, as always, is key.
