Vice president of China visits Washington to discuss relations Äž ĊĆē ĆĜđĔė Â–ÂƒĆĄ ”‹–‡” The United States received an important visit Feb. 15 from China’s Vice President Xi Jinping, the heir apparent to the Chinese presidency. The princelings come from the wealthy urban areas along China’s coast and tend to focus on issues of trade liberalization, urbanization and GDP growth. Future Premier Li Keqiang represents the populist coalition, most of who came from modest backgrounds and were indoctrinated into the party through the communist youth league. Such individuals tend to focus on political openness, anticorruption, climate change, rights for rural migrants and primary healthcare. This ideological division in China comes at a time of societal unrest over issues such as housing, rural development and corruption within the party. During the auspicious year of the dragon in 2012, the new leadership is facing the chalļ lenges of a nation currently at a crossroads. These developments only go to show that China is far from a politically homogenous nation.

When I say that nothing is gayer WKDQ WZR EURV ÂłEUR´ļLQJ RXW LWÂśV meant as an exercise in hyperbole. It’s like the 21st century equivÄĽ alent of a bathhouse: all the anonyÄĽ mous sex, all of the old creepers, but from the privacy and comfort of your iPhone. Bromance, which by its name alone sounds gay enough, hopes to succeed in much the same way Grindr did, by connecting local guys with similar interests. On the Internet, a number of blogs and their commenters wonÄĽ dered aloud how long it would take for gays and closeted “brosâ€? to overÄĽ run the app, turning it into a disÄĽ creet, perhaps more masculine verÄĽ sion of Grindr. In fact, I use it on close to a daily basis, mostly for creating graphics to use LQ 7KH &XUUHQW +RZHYHU , ÂżUPO\ believe that it’s creating a name for itself within the media world and it’s not a good one. As sites such as Photoshopfail and PSdisasters continue to pop up on the Internet, the evil sides of Photoshop and graphic designers have become much more apparent. In 2009, Ralph Lauren had to issue the following statement after printÄĽ ing an ad that had obviously been subjected to some serious editing, “For over 42 years we have built a brand based on quality and integÄĽ rity. After further investigation, we have learned that we are responÄĽ sible for the poor imaging and reÄĽ touching that resulted in a very disÄĽ torted image of a woman’s body. We have addressed the problem and going forward will take every preÄĽ caution to ensure that the caliber of our artwork represents our brand appropriately.â€? The Photoshop controversy isn’t just limited to models and fashion ads. The Economist was under atÄĽ tack in 2010 for editing a picture of President Obama standing on a beach in Louisiana. The original photo included President Obama, Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen and Charlotte Randolph, a local parish president, but the picture that appeared on the cover of The Economist only featured Obama. Emma Duncan, deputy editor of The Economist told the New York Times that Admiral Allen had been cropped out and that Randolph had been removed so as not to confuse readers with the presence of an unÄĽ known woman. “We often edit the photos we use on our covers‌it is to bring out the central character. We don’t edit photos in order to mislead.â€? They may not have meant to mislead, but that’s exactly what they did. At the beginning of this year, New York City began placing new posters around the city warning of the dangers of obesity, mainly deÄĽ picting how diabetes can lead to

amputations. One of the posters shows a man sitting on a stool with one leg amputated below the knee. Turns out, the man in the picture actually has two legs. This makes the poster an illustration rather than a picture, but nobody stated that distinction. In light of all the recent Photoļ shop controversy and claims that the media is putting pressure on women to look a certain way, legļ islation is being pushed in Britain and France that would require alļ tered photos used in ads to include disclaimers. They are also trying to completeļ ly ban altered photos in ads that are directed to consumers under the age of 16. These laws would cerļ tainly change the way women are portrayed in the media, but women aren’t the only ones being altered. Politicians are getting facelifts and crowds and faces are being changed. This isn’t just happening in the tabloids or personal blogs, it’s ocļ

curring in major media outlets, so why aren’t we doing anything about it? Everyone wants to look good in a picture that’s going to be pubļ lished full page in a magazine. The U.S. needs to take steps toward supporting an industry that is not allowed use digital alterations to change the context of a photo.

Sex on the Beach: Is tying the knot the path for you? Äž ĆėėĞ Ä‘ÄŠÄŠÄ&#x;Äž Â–ÂƒĆĄ ”‹–‡” I recently visited my hometown to see family and friends, and while I was there I discovered an alarming trend among my high school graduating class. Upon closer inspection, I quickly realized that the problem didn’t seem to just be with the people I had gone to high school with, but instead it revolved more closely around me. Sometime since I donned my graduation cap and accepted my diploma, I seem to have slipped into Dane Cook’s role in “Good Luck Chuck.â€? But there is no Jessica Alba in my story. Facebook keeps its users more connected than ever before and it isn’t an uncommon occurrence to see photos of a wedding or a new baby pop up on a newsfeed. My problem seems to be that all of these updates were coming from girls with whom I have had previous‌relations. Looking deeper into the statistics showed me just how serious the epidemic had become. Since freshman year of high VFKRRO ÂżYH RI P\ H[ÄĽJLUOIULHQGV have married; two who aren’t married have already each had a child; the last two will be adopting new last names by the end of 2012. Clearly, based on this history, I am both blessed and cursed. Just like Dane Cook as Chuck, it seems that any girl who has dated me found the one they’re meant to be with soon after. But if I’m someone looking to fall in love,

it’s too bad, so sad. Luckily, I’m not interested LQ DQ\ W\SH RI ORQJÄĽWHUP commitment at the moment. Couples who lived together and remained unmarried had only a 38 percent chance of lasting 10 years together, according to the same study. The lesson is simple. Don’t rush into walking down the aisle. In case you didn’t know... Plate color causing overeating? In a recent study found in the Journal of Consumer Research, plate color had a noticeable impact on portion size. The more alike the color of your plate is to your food, the bigger your portions are likely to be. The study showed people who ate food from a plate similar to their meal served themselves 22 percent more than people who had plates contrasting the color of their food.

Goodbye king size Mars Inc., the candy company responsible for Skittles, Snickers, Twix and M&Ms, is downsizing their product portions. Nitric Oxide maximizes muscle gain According to HealthHeadlines. com, nitric oxide supplements are a safe way to build muscle. Taking this supplement about 30 minutes before the start of your work out will help keep the oxygen in your muscles, allowing you to have more stamina for a longer and more strenuous workout.

Seven foods for healthier teeth An article found in HuffPost Healthy Living explains cheese, sugar-free gum, celery, tap water, pears, yogurt and sesame oil are foods proven to help strengthen teeth. Plaque feeds off starch and sugar, so avoiding foods that are acidic, sticky and sugary will also help keep your teeth healthy.

Nothing special about fructose In Annals of Internal Medicine, canadian researchers reported that fructose does not make people gain more weight than any other type of carbohydrates, concluding that fructose calories have the same effect as calories in other carbohydrates. The study found that, in trials of people with fructose diets and non-fructose diets, no weight difference was reported. The only example of weight gain was found in groups where a high calorie fructose diet was present.
