Accreditation: The Open College has agreed its quality assurance procedures with FETAC and is registered with FETAC to offer programmes leading to FETAC awards. This official recognition authorises us to offer programmes leading to FETAC awards within the National Framework of Qualifications in Ireland. The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. Following successful completion on any of our programmes you will receive a FETAC award. There is a registration fee payable with most courses to include administration, moderation and FETAC accreditation. This fee is €85 on component awards and €165 on Major Awards. Children with Additional Needs (FETAC Level 5 ) l

Course Details: This module is designed to enable the learner develop skills, gain knowledge and attitudes necessary to work with children who have additional needs. The learner will gain an understanding of the support needed to ensure children are fully included and integrated in a variety of care and educational environments. It aims to provide the learner with an understanding of the context of special needs, associated issues and approaches used as well as oering an overview of the legislation and policy development relating to children with additional needs in Ireland today. Course documentation for this journalism course is detailed, comprehensive and easy to read. This FETAC accredited, distance learning course means that students can study flexibly at home, or at work, while gaining an internationally accredited Qualification.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites: l

Level 4 Certificate or Leaving certificate and/or relevant work and life experiences. l As this programme is delivered through distance learning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative. l Students must be competent in both written and spoken English. l If you take this course by distance learning the course material will be posted to you. Disability Awareness (FETAC Level 6 ) l

Course Details: Learners who complete this new programme will obtain the knowledge on different definitions of disability in relation to historical and cultural influences. Learners will acquire knowledge of various types of physical and learning disabilities. They will be familiar with the different assistive technology and teaching methods which will help with the negative aspects of each disability and will acquire an understanding of the various theoretical models of disability and will have an awareness of the different legal issues associated with disability.

Unit 1: Types of Disabilities and Conditions Unit 2: Behaviour Difficulties and their Management l Unit 3: Specific Learning Difficulties l Unit 4: Self-Regulation and Social Skills Training. l

Who should complete this course? l

People who wish to pursue a career working with people who suffer from a disability. l People looking to gain a FETAC Level 6 Major Award in Early Childhood Care and Education - 6M2007.

Course Details: This module is designed to enable learners to work effectively as Special Needs Assistants and gain an understanding of the skills required to ensure children they are working with become independent learners. They will learn to work under the direction of the teacher and work as part of the multidisciplinary team. Through work experience the learner will gain invaluable hands on experience through which they will be able to apply theory to everyday tasks. Course documentation for this course is detailed, comprehensive and easy to read. This distance learning FETAC accredited course means that students can study flexibly at home, or at work, while gaining an Internationally Recognised Qualification.

Course Details: The purpose of this Special Needs Assisting programme is to equip the learner with the skills necessary to ensure adults or children with special needs are offered the same opportunity to access education compared to those who do not have special needs. Learners will examine the different educational options available for children in Ireland under current legalisation. This programme will outline the importance of the difference between an inclusive and integrated educational environment. The learner will also study the impact of special needs on behaviour and understand the different techniques to help with maladaptive behaviour. Learners will also understand the importance of stress management. Course documentation for this course is detailed, comprehensive and easy to read. Understanding Special Needs (FETAC Level 5 ) l

Who should complete this course? This new module is designed to give learners an understanding of the context of special needs, associated issues with special needs and approaches to ensuring the needs of children with special needs are met. Learners will gain broad knowledge of a range of special needs, the cause, treatment and interventions also.

Learners who successfully complete this course will: 4

Appreciate the context of children with special needs in Ireland. 4 Be aware of the range and characteristics of the more common types of special needs conditions 4 Be aware of the importance of working as part of the multidisciplinary team and understanding the value of good communication skills. 4 Demonstrate knowledge of best practice when working with children who have special needs. 4 Become aware of legislative and policy developments relating to children with special needs as well as an understanding the history of special needs in Ireland. 4 Gain an understanding of the dierent learning programmes and therapy available to help children with special needs. 4 Be aware of the issues faced by the child with the special need as well as the issues faced by the family on a daily basis. 4 Be aware of local and national services available for those with special needs. 4 Gain an understanding of the issues associated with working in specialist settings in public, private and voluntary childcare educational environments..
