|An Intro to Genderqueer|

Within the LGBTQ community, gender issues generally take a second place to those around sexuality. Gay and lesbian identities are most often privileged in LGB dialogue, be it around activism, education, or lifestyle, while trans* and other genderqueer issues still fly largely under the radar. Historically, this makes some sense; the idea of “they are just like me” can more easily be applied to those who differ in sexual preference than those who do not ascribe to what is expected of them within the gender norms of society. However, this excuse can only be relied upon for so long, especially when it comes to the nominally inclusive LGBT community. Though included in the acronym, trans* and genderqueer people face significantly different types of issues than many who identify as gay or lesbian. This isn’t to posit that there is no overlap, just that there is no inherent correlation between say, being attracted to women and feeling the need to bind your breasts in order to feel comfortable in your own body. Thus education around LGBT sexuality does not necessarily lead to a better understanding of the trans* identities; it can, in fact, even obscure or misrepresent some aspects, like the mistaken idea that being a butch lesbian is more or less equivalent to being a hetero-identified trans man. My hope with this column is thus to shed some light on the genderqueer world, as it’s generally no fun to be a part of marginalized community within another marginalized group. Hence, I’ll start this week with a few much needed clarifications of often misunderstood terminology. These definitions are not absolute or concrete and are limited by my own knowledge and experience.

Gender Appropriate Pronouns: Cisgender: This term refers to people who have gender identities that mesh with the one that they were assigned at birth. When the doctor looked at the genitals and proclaimed, “It’s a boy/girl!” they made a lucky correct guess that this person’s gender identity would match up with biological circumstance.

For those who no longer ascribe to the gender identity that was prescribed upon birth, being referred to as he/she incorrectly can be a remarkably undermining experience. When in doubt, the best question that can be asked is, “What pronouns do you prefer?” There are also, in fact, gender neutral options, like ze/zhe, zher/ zir, and hir. Additionally, the use of they/them as a singular pronoun can be freeing, especially if you do not know someone’s preference yet.

Genderqueer: This umbrella term encom-

passes all who do not feel like their identity fits within the prescribed gender norms and that the idea of being ascribed a gender at birth is a little bit wonky. These include people who ascribe to both genders, to no gender, to a blurring of genders, to a tertiary gender, etc.

I will continue to explore these terms in my future writing, both in regards to their employment and capacity for activism. If you believe that I miscategorized in any way, please send me an email and I will be happy to readjust as necessary.

Trans*:

Another umbrella term, trans* encompasses all who have or are in the process of transitioning out of the gender identity assigned to them at birth and into one that better reflects their understanding of themselves. The word encapsulates those who are transgender and transsexual, including female-to-male (FTM) and male-to-female (MTF) trans people, but also those who transition to an identity outside of the gender binary.

Dear Doris, I have recently put on some extra pounds and I have been finding it difficult to be motivated to do something about it. It is making me self-conscious about my body image. My partner loves me the way that I am but I need to lose the weight for my own piece of mind. Do you have any suggestions? Sincerely, Unpleasantly Plump. Dear Unpleasantly Plump, Your partner is just being nice to you because they’re probably not a peach themselves either. You are certainly scraping the bottom of the barrel asking for help from a Drag Queen, I tell ya. If you want to be motivated, join a gym and go. If you don’t go, you aren’t motivated enough. So… eat less food. If you ask for seconds… you aren’t motivated enough. If you have half the McDonalds coupon book used up and it’s sitting in your car and not in the trash? Lord help us. But seriously, I’ve learned myself, when I say I should lose weight, and don’t go out and do anything about it is because I am comfortable in my own skin, the main thing on my mind isn’t weight loss. If your partner loves you still, you don’t have to change to make anyone happy but you. If you truly still would like to lose weight, my best bet is to get motivated. If you’re a stay at home parent I’m sure there are ways to do it at home that only takes 30 minutes out of your day! Just be happy you have someone who loves you no matter what!

Hello Kittens! Brrrrrr! This month is going to be a cold one! Bundle up with someone you love, or just met... or bought for the hour and enjoy this magazine! Dear Doris, I have a masculine style and lately my friends have been saying that I should try a more girly look. I’m open to their suggestions so I was wondering... Can you give me some makeup/grooming advice?

Dear Doris, I recently started dating this girl, and while we have great chemistry and I love spending time with her, she cheated on her last girlfriend and I’m in a pickle - do I give her the benefit of the doubt and keep seeing her at the risk of falling for someone and getting hurt again, or do I cut and run? Obviously, I

Dear Masc Style, Change is never a bad thing! It is fun to experiment with your look to see if your friends like it, but more importantly yourself. With makeup I’d suggest going subtle with slapping on a thick coat of Cover Girl to Cover the Guy! Everyone likes a fresh shade of Floozy Red so pucker up your lips and smear them on! Crayola makes fantastic markers that wash off with hot water, so choose what color best reflects you, and apply to the eyelids! (Mine is purple). If your hair is short I would suggest buying a wig that SCREAMS feminine and get a plastic pink one from Dollarama (Halloween is around the corner). But seriously. If your friends are asking you to try a more girly look, and you’re expressing yourself openly and unapologetically than you need to change your friends’ minds, or your friends all together. If you’re comfortable in your own skin, then you are already beautiful!

was cheated on in my last relationship. Sincerely, Desperately Seeking Scissoring. Dear DSS, I am sorry to hear that you were cheated on in your last relationship, and it’s fantastic that you are seeing a girl now! But, if you want to follow your instincts, you should do some sleuthing. What is it that you girls use for social dating online? GirlFran-Hunt or SCISR? Make a fake profile and try to pick her up! If she agrees, then meet up with her at the place you agreed to meet and dump her! Better yet, SPY ON HER! Follow her around, if she’s going to work, park outside (make sure you pack food) and just watch. Watch until she leaves. If she’s late, she’s obviously having sex in the stall of her job. But in all seriousness, you are going to have to let your heart do the deciding. If I were you, I’d would keep going with it. She makes you happy, so why cut it off? Her cheating happened in the past, and that’s why it’s called the PAST. You were lucky enough that she would be open and let you know about it, so doesn’t that count for something? She’s willing to let you know she’s not perfect, and none of us are. I can’t tell you what you can do; only you can sweetie.

Baking

Spiced Pumpkin Scones

with

Betty Boo F

or those of you who don’t know me, let me introduce myself: I’m Betty Boo, and I want to welcome you to the first Baking with Betty

Boo.

I am a local drag queen who has been doing drag since 2007, and besides my love of drag and entertaining, one of my passions is spending time in the kitchen. In fact, few people know that the name Betty comes from a suggestion from my boyfriend based on my love of baking, his little Betty Crocker. So when I was approached by the ‘Out’port to do this article, I was quite pleased to be able to share the lovin’ in my oven with you. Each column will feature recipes, suggestions and tips on what does and doesn’t work, and general tips for the kitchen. It’s great that my first column is in the October issue, as Fall is one of my favourite times of the year for baking. The flavors of apples and pumpkin and the aromas of the spices filling the air, it brings the feeling of warmth and home on those crisp autumn days.

FOR Pumpkin Scones: 2 cups (260 grams) all-purpose flour 1/3 cup (70 grams) brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger 3/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 cup (113 grams) cold unsalted butter (1 stick of butter) 1/2 cup (113 grams) pumpkin puree 1 tablespoon unsulphured molasses (we use Blackstrap Unsulphured Molasses) 3 tablespoons half and half 1 egg 2 teaspoons vanilla

FOR Simple Sugar Glaze 1 cup (125 grams) powdered sugar, sifted 1 to 2 tablespoons half and half FOR Spiced Glaze 1 cup (125 grams) powdered sugar, sifted 1 tablespoon pumpkin puree 1/8 teaspoon cloves 1/8 nutmeg 1/8 ginger 1/4 cinnamon 1 to 2 tablespoons half and half

H

eat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) then line a large baking sheet or two small baking sheets with parchment paper (you can also spray with non-stick cooking spray if you do not have parchment paper). In a large bowl, whisk the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and all the spices together (cinnamon, ginger, clove and nutmeg). Then, cut the cold butter into small cubes (it is very important that the butter is cold for this). Add butter to flour mixture then use two knives or a pastry cutter to “cut” the butter into the flour mixture – this should take about 5 minutes by hand. By the end, the mixture should look like coarse cornmeal or crumbs. (You could also use a food processor for this – if using, add flour mixture to bowl of a food processor then add the cold butter cubes. Pulse three to four times until the mixture looks like coarse cornmeal or crumbs).

In another medium bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree, molasses, half and half, vanilla extract and egg until blended. Stir pumpkin mixture into flour and butter mixture with a spoon just until a soft dough forms. Transfer the dough to a floured surface then knead it three to four times until it comes together. Then, pat or use a rolling pin to roll the dough into a 10 inch by 7 inch rectangle. Use a knife or pizza cutter (pizza cutter works best) to cut the rectangle in half lengthwise then cut into 4 even pieces crosswise, making eight rectangles. Now, cut each rectangle into two triangles. Transfer scones to the prepared baking sheet(s) then bake 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once scones have cooled, make the glazes. To make the simple sugar glaze, add sifted powdered sugar to a medium bowl then add one tablespoon of half and half. Stir then judge the consistency. If when you pick a spoon up and out of the glaze it slowly drizzles back into the glaze, it is fine. If it is too thick, add a little more half and half (a little goes a long way here). If it is too thin, add a little more powdered sugar. Dip each cooled scone directly into the glaze then place glazed side up back onto the cooling rack. Next, make the pumpkin spiced glaze. Combine sifted powdered sugar, pumpkin puree, spices (cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg), and then add one tablespoon of half and half. Stir and check consistency. Adjust the same way as you would the simple glaze. Use a spoon to drizzle a zig-zag pattern across each scone.

*The recipe makes a glaze and icing that I, personally, found too sweet. I would maybe cut the sugar by half or just go with a plain icing sugar glaze. They work well plain un-iced as well.

Vanilla Cream Glaze 1cup powdered sugar 1 ½ tsps of vanilla extract ¼ cup of heavy cream 2 ½ tbsps of milk Add sugar to bowl and stir in heavy cream and vanilla until mixture resembles a thick batter. Add milk one tablespoon at a time, stirring until smooth (about 3-5 minutes). The mixture may look lumpy at first, but just continue to stir and it will become smooth.

Wait about 15 minutes until the glaze has set then enjoy!

Caramel Apple Cupcakes Vanilla Bean Cream Cheese Frosting: 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 1 (8-ounce) bar cream cheese, room temperature 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste 4 cups powdered sugar (about 2 pounds) 1/2 teaspoon salt In a large bowl using an electric mixer on low speed, beat the butter, cream cheese, and vanilla bean paste until smooth and thoroughly blended. Slowly add the powdered sugar and salt. Mix until smooth.

2 cups granulated sugar 2 large eggs 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 4 apples, cored, peeled, and chopped (recommended: 2 Granny Smith and 2 Fuji)

*I had a hard time finding the vanilla paste in St. John’s so I substituted extract as well as 2 vanilla beans. Make sure to use an unsalted butter, as the recipe asks you to use salt as well in the icing, if you can’t find unsalted butter, don’t add the extra salt, otherwise you will end up with a very salty icing.

Caramel syrup, for garnish

Vanilla Bean Cream Cheese Frosting, recipe follows.

*The batter is thicker than the average cupcake and was more like a cookie dough until the apples were added. The natural juices from the Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line two regular size cupcake pans apples help loosen up the dough’s consistency. with cupcake liners. If you make these and think the dough is too thick, don’t worry because it will work out, and In a large bowl using an electric mixer on low speed, combine the sugthe apples soften while baking and leave a nice ar, eggs, butter, and vanilla extract until blended. In a separate large moist cake. bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing on low until blended. Stir in the apples.

P

Fill the cupcake liners three-quarters full with batter and bake until the cupcakes spring back when touched with your finger, 15 to 20 minutes. Let it cool in the pans for a few minutes, and then remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

|On our Gaydar| Bailan Buschbaum

As a respected former Ger-

man soldier and athlete, Bailan Buschbaum is still well known in his home country. He won Germany a gold medal in pole vaulting at the 1999 European Junior Championships and he represented his country all the way to the Olympics. Although you might assume Bailan is on our gaydar because he happens to be gay, the truth is Bailan was actually born with female genitalia and lived much of his life (including the entirety of his sporting career) as a woman. When he finally retired from pole vaulting in 2007 due to an injury, he simultaneously announced that he was really a male. He explained he had never felt like a woman and would be courageously starting the process of transitioning his body from female to male. Talk about a job well done. Today Bailan is a well-known author and trainer in Germany who specializes in mental and physical health and wellness. He is known for his caring and compassion and for giving back to the German sporting community in every way that he can.

Happy Birthday, Drag Idol!

Photos supplied by DJ Fabian

Can you believe it’s been ten years since the glitz, glamour, and fun of Drag Idol first began in St. John’s? What started as a simple event to wrap up the Pride Parade is now a hilarious get-together of the city’s amateur and professional drag queens. Queens who host performances all year long compete against others wearing a dress in public for the first time. In fact, last year’s winner Tanya Tanqueray had never done drag prior to entering the contest. Whatever their skill level, they never fail to please. In 2004, Victoria won the contest without a single costume change - the shock! In 2006, Doris Anita Douche claimed the crown when she opted to sing live instead of lip sync. Jessica Lopez won in 2007 when (unknown to everyone) she wasn’t even old enough to legally be in the bar. In 2008, Betty Boo Kakke’s simulated sex scene (including a realistic female orgasm) was the talk of the town for weeks. Be sure to join us for this year’s Drag Idol, being held at Velvet on November 10th, 2013.

|New Duds for Dudes| Shopping for men’s clothing is never easy. Most shops cater to a primarily female clientelle and the few shops that do include a section for men often stock it with only the most generic, easy-to-sell items. Luckily,

there are a few new options in our beautiful and growing capital. JUNK on Water Street specializes in men’s clothing and housewares and features designers you can’t get anywhere else in St. John’s.

Their extensive list of designer duds in-

clude items from Ben Sherman, DIESEL, True Religion, and more.

The

clothes are anything but inexpensive, but they’re high quality and have some actual design and tailoring. They fit better and look better than anything you’re likely to find elsewhere in the city.

Another new option is Bench., which just opened its first location in the city inside the Avalon Mall. This

British brand is known for its obnoxious labels and trendy streetwear, offering shirts and jackets that just have a little something extra in the design. Its fall jackets are especially popular so now’s definitely the time to drop in and check it out.

|PFLAG|

We’ve all been there before.

In case you were wondering, PFLAG stands for

The sweaty hands, the dry throat, the nervous knee shaking. We’ve met someone who intrigues us. Someone who gives us butterflies. Suddenly, we get the overwhelming feeling we want more, so we make that leap into the unknown and actually ask them on a date.

The organization was founded in 1972 by Jeanne Manford because she wanted to bridge the gap between the LGBT and heterosexual communities after learning that her son had been beaten during a political gathering in New York.

So what now? Where to go? What to wear? What to say?

Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

After that attack, she protested and complained of police inaction, and spoke to the media identifying herself as the mother of a gay protester. In 1993, the PFLAG acronym became official and the organization added gender identity to their scope, expanding to include bisexual and transgender people. With its beginnings stemming from the inaction of the government and a handwritten sign; “Parents of Gays: Unite in Support of Our Children”, one mother began a legacy of love which now extends all over the world. PFLAG meets on the third Thursday of every month. The October meeting will be held on the 17th, on the sixth floor of Memorial’s University Centre, beginning at 7 p.m. Everyone will have the opportunity to talk about their lives and enjoy a really great discussion that they couldn’t have at school, the workplace, or even at home. The environment at PFLAG meetings is non-judgemental and welcoming, and aside from sharing stories, there are snacks to nibble on. Some of the topics are serious and some are jovial in nature, but above all, completely confidential. There have been really wonderful topics brought up during the meetings; from coming out and isolation, to lemon meringue pie and the absolute terror pecan pies can instill in people.

Restaurant first dates have their pros and cons. That awkward silence during those moments of breaks in conversation can be torturous. The intimacy it requires to pull yourself out of a public area and simply be the two of you can intimidating. If you are one of those people who cannot fathom sitting somewhere for an hour and having non-stop conversation, or who forgets to close their mouth while chewing, do not go to a restaurant. Choose an activity. Perhaps a walk in the park with your pet, or better yet, an evening of air hockey and shoot-em-up games at the arcade can be quite entertaining. The point of a first date is to choose something that you both enjoy, or something completely new. If you choose something you are not fully comfortable with, chances are you will lose any chance of a repeat outing.

It’s the most terrifying ordeal to some.

For others it is simple and enjoyable. I’m always unsure of what to wear, how to look, what topics to discuss, and which ones to stay away from. I’m not overly girly - should I be? Isn’t a lipstick lesbian what everyone is looking for? I can be but it’s not me everyday. Is that important? What you wear is dependent on where you go. Do not wear a ball gown to the movies. Do not wear a suit and tie to a coffee date. With this in mind, be yourself. Do not create a false impression of who you are. That person will come to expect you to look and act that way all the time. It is essentially a lie. Do not dress to impress, dress for the occasion and for yourself. If you’re not comfortable it will show through.

The meetings are not just for LGBT folks either! As the name implies, family and friends can come as well. Not only is it a place they can learn about their LGBT counterparts, it is also a place where they can talk about their fears, their struggles, and their thoughts about the LGBT community, their friends, and their loved ones in a safe, non-judgemental space. Again, the group is meeting on the 17th of October and we would love to see some new faces! Have a Happy Halloween.

-David Le

|Sexless in the City|

Conversation? This is the hard part.

Remember there are rules! The crazy ex IS NEVER A TOPIC TO CHOOSE! Drama and insecurities are also not exactly the most desired conversation. Do not talk about the previous horrible dates you’ve been on... this week. Though some may be funny it should not be brought up that you’re scanning the sea for the greatest catch. It is intimidating to the person you’re currently with, especially if this is the first date they’ve been on since junior high. Discuss your interests, your ambitions, your hobbies. More importantly, listen and ask questions of them. Be engaging! It is incredible how many people talk but don’t truly listen to the other person. It should be a like a tennis match with a really big rally. No aces allowed. It is about getting to know each other, not selling yourself. The person is here with you, essentially the sell has occurred. All in all remember that it is simply a chance to meet someone new and to have them meet you. There is no need for pressure or insecurities. Enjoy yourself, and allow yourself to laugh and smile. Cliché as it is, be yourself. You can’t be anyone else.

|Feast Your Eyes on Fall|

St. John’s is a spectacularly beautiful city. From the rugged charm of the Battery, to the colorful rowhouses of Georgestown, to the grand manors of the Waterford Valley - almost everywhere you look could be a postcard. It’s especially beautiful at this time of year, as the leaves change and add to the rainbow that is our colourful capital. But where are the best places to view the fall foliage? These are The ‘Out’port’s top three picks.

3. Signal Hill Signal Hill is the most accessible of our three picks. You can drive right to the top and park beside Cabot Tower if you choose, or hike up using the narrow coastal trail that begins in the Battery. The view of St. John’s from Signal Hill is a familiar one, and from this vantage point you can see our downtown trees in all their colourful glory. These trees, which are for the most part in the central courtyards of our rowhouse city blocks, are all but invisible at street level so it’s impressive to see just how many there are downtown from Signal Hill.

1. Shea Heights An old gravel road connects Shea Heights to Kilbride, stretching across the Southside Hills directly above the lushest portion of the Waterford Valley, including portions of Bowring Park. While it may not be the most attractive view of St. John’s, it is certainly the most impressive and colourful in the fall. You can see just about every tree along Waterford Bridge Road and the rainbow the different species create is beautiful to behold. This view is very accessible as well. Just park at the entrance to the gravel road off Linegar Avenue in Shea Heights and walk until you come to a clearing.

Photos by Ryan Crocker

2. Southside Hills Beginning in Fort Amherst, hike the East Coast Trail to the top of the Southside Hills and you’ll be rewarded with an unparalleled view of the city and its downtown fall foliage. The view of downtown from Signal Hill is at an angle, but from the Southside Hills, it’s straight on. You can see all of our uphill downtown streets as plain as looking on a map, and follow cars and pedestrians as they make their way around. It’s a completely different experience than Signal Hill, and one you have to work harder to get. This is easily the least accessible of our options. Depending on your fitness level, plan for it to take 30 minutes or more for you to hike to the top. The trail is also very rough in patches so be careful.
