Empowering Individuals Through Winter Sports FEATURED STORIES: Olympian Chad Fleischer Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club | Steamboat STARS
A Magazine Created by: www.ThePaoliGroup.com
Enjoy the Game Chris Paoli “The game of life is a game to be played, not won or lost.” This quote is on the wall of the Howelsen Ice Arena in memorial of a wonderful female hockey enthusiast who passed away far too early. As I participated in this year’s Thanksgiving hockey tournament with my daughter Alexa and son Nico, these words hit home.
I reflected on the decision my wife Jenn and I made in 2003 to move to Steamboat. That decision, imperfect in its planning, has yielded a life of opportunities we only dreamed about in New York. In Steamboat, Jenn and I actively indulge in the spirited journey of raising our children. For the same reason families invest so much money in ski vacations, we made the choice to live here full time. Skiing, fishing, playing hockey on Thanksgiving—it’s much more fun to do these things together than alone. Steamboat is an oasis from the everyday grind of life. It’s exempt from exhausting traffic and long commutes, feeling lost in the crowds and empty from impersonal daily interactions. Those of us fortunate enough to call Steamboat home genuinely enjoy sharing our everyday outings with locals and visitors we come to know as friends. I say it all the time: real life is better than the vacation. The people here are truly that nice, engaging, and authentic.
“Thank you for reading our magazine. Our purpose is to inspire affection for the amazing town we call home and the spectacular properties we represent as seller’s agents.” Chris Paoli, Broker Owner, Colorado Group Realty, Steamboat Springs, Colorado
In the visitors I meet every year, I notice a familiar expression of relief and can identify with their newfound sense of connection. Families finally share in active endeavors. They’re together and loving the adventure, the memory making, and the easy joy. Their Steamboat vacations are perfect experiences to create new conversations and tight bonds, regardless of—or inspired by—the physical challenges of their chosen activity. Climbing single track on a mountain bike, catching trout on a tiny fly, skiing a black diamond bumps run, snowmobiling in three feet of fresh powder— these moments force us to live in the present and remind us to be grateful for those we love. As you contemplate your next excursion away from the norm, add Steamboat to your list and give us a call. There’s a reason people come here to play and end up staying for the game of life.

Mike Bray Between the Bridges
Mike Bray spent of good part of his youth chasing trout in Montana. As an avid angler, he remembers being lost in the sport for the day. “Usually with trout fishing, you get up early, hike in, and hike out. It’s a full day affair.” Some of his favorite fishing spots include the Madison, Yellowstone, Big Hole, and Beaver Head Rivers. These are big tributaries in majestic locations, known as some of the greatest trout streams with harsh and pristine landscape infused with a sense of history. On one of Mike’s visits to Steamboat for business and skiing, he was surprised to see three fly fishing shops in town. Right away, he knew Steamboat’s fishing had to be good. In 2014, he decided to invest in a local property, exploring every neighborhood in every season. Finally, he settled on a downtown condo. Because Mike works in Washington, D.C. and lives in suburban Virginia, he wanted the ease, accessibility, and convenience of urban living. The authentic Steamboat lifestyle had already captivated him, and he figured out he could work a full day on east coast time and still enjoy his typical vacation activities of fishing, hiking, and biking. When he comes to Steamboat, Mike flies into Hayden and takes a shuttle to his condo. With restaurants and shops right downtown, he doesn’t need a car. He can walk from home to fish in the Yampa or hike the trails on Emerald. “I can go for a short hike or I can walk forever. It’s endless up there.” Across the seasons, downtown Steamboat exudes a vibrancy that diverts confinement. Some of the best fishing Mike has done in Steamboat has been right downtown, before or after work. “I caught the two biggest trout I’ve ever caught in my life on the Yampa River. One was between the downtown bridges. People were cheering me on from the restaurants and bars.” Mike quickly learned that the river in Steamboat is one for sharing—kids are playing and dogs are swimming. “Tubers and rafters splash through your hole before disappearing downriver, and then you hook your fish.” Steamboat allows Mike to engage in his work and indulge in his passions. When he’s not working, he’s lured outside, staying active and fit while lost in each moment. He loves the ease of Steamboat’s pace and the general disposition of the people. “Everyone is helpful in sharing local knowledge. There’s a collective love for the outdoors and with that comes a similar vibe, too. Eventually, you take it for granted that people are exceptionally nice.”

Winter Fly Fishing Bucking Rainbow Outfitters
Winter fly fishing holds its own in Ski Town, USA. It’s true that most people come to Steamboat to float though powder and ski between aspen trees. But some people prefer the solitude and serenity of our valley’s rivers to the adrenaline rousing force of gravity. Or, they simply realize that the best fishing doesn’t necessarily coincide with summertime. With less pressure on the water and large concentrations of fish, winter can mean fantastic fishing adventures. A fish doesn’t need to feed as much in cold weather, but it will eat if you give it the chance. Don’t misunderstand: winter fly fishing is technically challenging. It calls upon knowledge, precision, and skill. If you can catch a fish in the winter, they say, you can catch a fish in the spring, summer, and fall. Steamboat’s peak winter fishing hours are 10am-3:30pm, with midge hatches starting late morning and coming off throughout the day. Since midges make up half a trout’s food consumption at any point in time, they’re important to understand—even more so in the winter with reduced mayfly activity. You can use dry flies, but the most consistent successful method is nymphing. Size 20-24 midges in dull colors used with a 6x leader and little to no indicator almost always work. The Stagecoach tailwaters are lauded by experts as Colorado’s best rainbow trout fishery. They allow for all season access to over three thousand fish per river mile and provide the most reliable public water fishing for all abilities throughout the winter. The Yampa River
9

flows out of the bottom of the dam at Stagecoach Reservoir at a consistent 42 degrees and 70 cfs. The stable environment creates an idyllic winter fish sanctuary. To protect one of Steamboat’s elk wintering and spring calving habitats, the Division of Wildlife restricts vehicular access to the tailwaters from January 1st to March 31st. The closure keeps out a lot of fishermen, increasing your chances for a peaceful and prolific experience. You can walk the 45 minutes around Stagecoach Reservoir to the fishing area below the dam or access the area by snowmobile. You don’t have to go as far as Stagecoach, though, to encounter promising prospects. Right downtown, the Yampa River offers superior winter fishing. By mid February, the layer of ice begins to break and the river opens and warms up. Midge hatches grow more productive and the trout respond with interest and activity. Midge and egg patterns are effective, as are black micro-stones and San Juan worms. Around March, streamers come into play. After three months of ice and darkness, these fish are ready to move. March can be the best month of the year for fishing Steamboat’s downtown area. By this time, even die-hard powderhounds are trading in their ski pants for waders. If you’re new to winter fishing in northwest Colorado, be sure to connect with a local guide. Pack warm wool socks and lots of layers. And be camera ready, because more likely than not, your friends and family will dispute your “winter fishing” stories.

Three Forks Ranch Too Good Not to Share The Lodge and Spa at Three Forks Ranch is one of Routt County’s best kept secrets. Owned and operated by the Pratt family since 1999, the ranch occupies 200,000 acres spanning both sides of the ColoradoWyoming border. The 150,000 acres in Wyoming are used for cow-calf operations and grazing leases. The 50,000 acres in Colorado are where guests can fly fish, hunt, horseback ride, and ski in the pure, pristine, rugged, and adventurous Rocky mountain elements. The 37,000 square foot main lodge opened in 2008 and was created to match the quality of accommodations with the Pratt family’s distinguished level of service. Without a doubt, lodging is luxurious, grand, lavish, and world class. “We’re a hotel,” General Manager Allison Pratt explains, “but we’re inviting people into our home. Everyone who works here lives here. We interact with guests on a daily basis. There’s not a single guest that comes to Three Forks that I don’t meet.” It’s this kind of onsite presence and interaction that sets Three Forks apart. “We get to know our guests and they get to know us,” Allison says. “They become our friends.” With an 88% return rate, Three Forks has folks coming back for their 12th and 13th consecutive year. For winter sports enthusiasts, Three Forks Mountain is 11,000 vertical feet with 22 customizable runs. With no lift service or lines, snowcats not only take guests up, they also groom runs or leave them untouched. Depending on the experience and desire of each skier or rider, Three Forks offers individualized service in a quality backcountry setting. “We invited local Olympians to ski at Three Forks to see if we could keep them busy and happy on our mountain,” Allison shared. “It was a success.” For hunting enthusiasts, the ranch offers 50,000 private acres of bugling elk, trophy mule deer, and spot and stalk pronghorn hunts. Guests’ success rates hover in the 90% range. Three Forks is surrounded on three sides by National Forest and has an elite group of hunting guides. Fishing enthusiasts benefit from the Pratts’ 16 mile restoration of the Little Snake River. “When we bought the ranch, the river was essentially dead. It suffered years of mismanagement and was incapable of sustaining fish life,” Allison said. As good stewards of the land, Three Forks worked with the US Army Corps of Engineer on the largest private river restoration project in the Corps’ history at the time. “Now the river is amazing,” Allison confirms. “It’s the Disneyland of fly fishing.” With technical water for experienced fly fishers and beginner water for those who have never cast a fly, Three Forks individualizes and manages guests’ experiences. To maximize water per person, they put only 20 people on the river at a time. While Three Forks caters to leisure travellers looking to escape summer’s triple digit heat and humidity or life’s daily routines, they also host corporate retreats. “People can be very productive when they get to mountain bike or snowmobile after a morning of meetings,” Allison testifies. Productivity is ensured when a hard day of work and play ends with a comfortable night’s rest in 600 thread count sheets. Three Forks is too phenomenal a place to be quiet about. “We realized once we bought the ranch,” Allison says, “that we had something too special not to share.”

Chad Fleischer Returning the Favor Chad Fleischer has never questioned his path. He first moved to Steamboat at age 19 under questionable circumstances. He was the number one college recruit for ski racing who turned down every offer, including Dartmouth. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) took him in cautiously under the condition that he sign a contract. Chad was known to be risky and reckless, a danger to himself and others. He was a distraction and a renegade, but he was gifted, fast, and passionate, too.
Chad went on to become a member of the US Alpine Team, World Championship Team, two-time Olympian and National Downhill Champion, and World Cup Silver medalist. Now that he’s retired from a successful career in ski racing, he is a husband, parent, business owner, and coach. He easily and absolutely understands the impact the SSWSC had on his skiing, his character, and his life.
Since he’s been here, Chad has remained true to his spirit, his purpose, and the legacy. He owns and operates his own ski shop, Fleischer Sport, in Gondola Square and is coaching the SSWSC’s U12+ program this season. “It’s the same basic fundamentals you have anywhere in life: sports are about relationship building, trying, believing, being goal oriented, and improving as a person not just an athlete. I was the guy who was told at age 12 that there was no way I could ski,” Chad said. “You just never know.” For someone who grew up with Evel Knievel as his hero and sustained regular stitches, Chad credits his success—in ski racing and business—to following his passion and challenging the status quo. He stuck to his path, fearless as he did so. Understanding we succeed when we do what we love, passing on the passion for the sport he loves is as important as great technique.
As an individual skier, “I lacked the discipline to arrange my efforts and skills,” Chad recalls. “The club gave me the tools, objectives, and benchmarks to achieve my goals. And I was willing to change my ways to better myself.” The year Chad joined the club, he won every race and made the US Ski Team because of the hard work, discipline, and goals set out for him. “We were club of the year that year,” Chad proudly acknowledges. “A few seasons later, we put more men on the US Ski Team than ever before. We raised the bar.” Chad was always aware how instrumental the SSWSC was in his development. “It was such a pivotal time in my life with what I was able to achieve,” he said, “that I promised myself I would end up living here. The SSWSC is embedded in the community, and there’s an expectation that you’ll continue the legacy.”

Preparing for the Future One Turn at a Time
by Jim Boyne, Executive Director of SSWSC
Few would argue that Steamboat Springs provides a unique environment and lifestyle. Tucked away within the Rocky Mountains, Steamboat is a gold mine for outdoor enthusiasts and a playground for those seeking adventure and a healthy lifestyle. When you immerse yourself into this mountain town, you discover the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. It’s a hidden gem that has influenced the lives of thousands of local youth. Its heritage and legacy are substantial parts of our commnunity’s fabric and history. The club is a non-profit that provides sports and youth development programming for a third of the kids in Steamboat schools plus other athletes from around the world. Serving tens of thousands of youth for more than a century, the club is one of the oldest and most successful winter sports clubs in North America. We’ve produced 88 Olympians, making 151 Winter Olympic appearances in 19 Winter Games and representing 12 countries. What’s less prominent is the impact the club has had in helping local kids pursue their dreams off the mountain. While Olympic and World Cup athletes are widely celebrated, the club has large numbers of athletes who also pursue their dreams in college. They go on to become collegiate scholars, NCAA competitive athletes, or both. The club’s broader vision of creating champions on and off the mountain has been a means for Steamboat locals to chart a path to success. Last year, 94% of our graduating seniors were college bound. The importance of education is the behind the scenes output of our programming that’s often overlooked. Eighteen year olds Sawyer Gander and Zach Rosa grew up in Steamboat as club athletes. With skis underfoot and unique programs intertwining snow sports with life skill development, they benefited from the importance of goal setting in both sports and school.
Sawyer began training with the club as a young girl and continued as an alpine skier for nine years. Reflecting back, she credits mandatory study time at ski races and training camps with reinforcing the importance of academics. Currently a freshman at the University of Colorado Boulder, Sawyer knew college was important and always kept in mind that her GPA and actions outside of ski racing were critical to achieving her goals. “The most important thing I learned through ski racing with the SSWSC was to always work hard and hold myself accountable for everything I Sawyer learned to apply the same values to school, skiing, and life. do,” she said. “Being a student athlete required me to be more efficient with my time, and the time management skills I developed while ski racing are helping me a lot in college. Ski racing held me accountable for my school work, and I was always driven by my parents, peers, and coaches to do well in school.”

At the age of four, Zach Rosa started SSWSC programming as an alpine skier. Later, he found his passion on the slopes as a mogul skier. Zach currently studies engineering at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. While he skied at the club, he achieved a 4.02 GPA. He maintained his high school studies while reaching new heights in his skiing career by competing in the Freestyle Nationals during his junior and senior years. “Balancing school and skiing was the main priority for me and my coaches,” Zach said. “My coaches made sure we were all doing well in school. I gained more motivation to do well in school so I could get out and ski every day.”
Zach matched his achievements in Freestyle and academics by maintaining balance.
Both Sawyer and Zach enjoyed their childhood in Steamboat with a carefree spirit on the slopes of Howelsen Hill and the Steamboat Ski Area. The club blended that carefree spirit with its core values of excellence, integrity, respect, dedication, and teamwork. The combination works to develop a lifelong passion for the outdoors and snowsports and a commitment to achieve life goals. When Sawyer and Zach reached high school, they were offered the unique skier schedule that Steamboat schools have implemented: classes end at noon for an afternoon of club training. As students are required to keep up their studies in nontraditional ways, coursework remains a priority. If athletes don’t study, they don’t ski. With this added incentive, club athletes have to be disciplined to fit the rigors of skiing, education, family life, and friends into their day. Skiing and snowboarding have been important to kids in Steamboat for many generations. With youth programming in 10 different disciplines through the winter and summer months, the club is a core part of Steamboat that helps create the complete, well-rounded athlete. Skiing will always be a part of Steamboat, but there is a greater destination than the bottom of the run for club athletes like Sawyer and Zach. Their desired destination was college. True to our vision, the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club continues to create champions, on and off the mountain.

Fleischer Sports Top Picks by Chad Fleischer Winter in Steamboat is a truly exceptional and unique experience. Whether you live here or come to visit, it’s the only one place in North America with world famous Champagne Powder glistening through endless aspen glades. Skiing and riding is more than going up and down a mountain. It’s being one with nature, gravity, friends, and family. The sport allows people to explore their personal limits with few rules. Often times, the only consequence of a mistake is a soft landing in fresh fluffy snow. Skiing is also the only sport with it’s own after party—Après Skiing. When I opened Fleischer Sport, my objective was to create the single best ski shop experience in the world. It’s a large undertaking and we strive to deliver that experience by offering superior customer service and the industry’s best equipment, apparel, and accessories. Every year I seek out the best equipment for enjoying the snow. To be your best, you want to be warm and comfortable and you want to look and feel good. Your equipment is your dance partner, in sync with your every move. This pertains to skis, boots, helmets and everything in between.
Here are some of my TOP PICKS for the 2016-17 ski season available at Fleischer Sport.
Skis
There are so many great skis being manufactured today, but choosing your ski from a magazine is never ideal. Important considerations include where you ski and the conditions you ski in, your weight, your experience and ability, and your athleticism and strength. I match skis to skiers; that’s the only way to get the dance partner you need to disco down the fall line.
MEN
Kästle FX HP 85 and HP 95 and Blizzard Brahma 88 and Bonifide 98 (the number is the ski’s waist size). For those who think big and fat doesn’t ski well, check out the Kästle BMX HP 105—it’s my personal favorite for skiing trees on a Steamboat powder day.
WOMEN
The entire Atomic Vantage line. They’re lightweight and versatile for all terrain—groomers, trees, powder, and moguls.
Chad Fleischer is the owner of Fleischer Sport and a ten year veteran of the US Alpine Ski Team. He is Two Time Alpine Skiing Winter Olympian, Five Time World Championship Team Member, World Cup Finals Silver Medalist, and Two Time National DH Champion. Fleischer Sport has been voted Steamboat’s #1 ski shop for seven straight years and recognized in Ski, Skiing, Robb Report, SNOW magazine and many other publications. 2250 Apres Ski Way Steamboat, CO 80487 :: 970.870.0900 :: fleischersport.com

They come in a variety of colors to stand out in the crowd or match your boots, skis, or clothes. They’re extremely scratch resistant and durable, and they never fog. We’ve tested Dragon in the hardest and harshest conditions and they’ve never failed. These are a must: if you can’t see, you can’t perform.
Helmets Thinking of something new, cool and mind blowing? I’m IN LOVE with my CP helmet. It’s a visor and helmet all in one. It’s not for snowy or blower powder days, but if you want the best experience on a blue bird day this one’s for you. CP is Swiss made so it’s as perfect as helmets can be. Try the helmet out for a day. If you’re not happy, bring it back for a refund. This helmet is also great for people who ski with glasses.

Steamboat Powdercats Greetings Powderhounds
Steamboat Powdercats was founded in 1983 by Jupiter Jones. Jupiter was a man with a contagious passion for powder, adventure, and camaraderie. He made his best friends in open snow fields. After securing a permit of 5,000+ acres on Buffalo Pass, Jupiter put the heart and soul into a maverick operation that has since become a first class cat ski enterprise. While Steamboat Resort receives an annual average of 350 inches of light, dry, fluffy powder, Buffalo Pass (aka Fluffalo Pass) receives even more. It’s Colorado’s deepest annual snowpack. In 2011, Buff Pass registered the deepest snowpack ever recorded in the state’s snow measuring history. In Powdercats’ inaugural year, Jupiter and his team guided 400 guests into a portion of their terrain. Now, they take 36 guests per day into the backcountry and provide more than 2,000 skier days per season. With an 80% return rate, Steamboat Powdercats is how people satiate their powder fix. A typical Powdercats season runs December through early April. Guests ski and ride on open snowfields and through aspen trees. Runs vary in length from 500 to 1,200 vertical feet and in steepness from 15 to 40 degrees. The terrain is below tree line with north, south, east, and west facing aspects. Powdercats’ goal is to take guests through the best snow of their lives, where every turn is a fresh powder turn. Buff Pass is just 25 minutes from downtown Steamboat Springs, so skiing and riding can start by 9:15am. With three heated snowcats, groups are divided according to ability to ensure comfort and safety. Intermediate and advanced terrain on Buff Pass is similar to Steamboat Resort’s blues and blacks. Expert terrain is comparable to the ski area’s Chutes and Gates. Buff Pass elevations range from 8,272 feet to 10,804 feet on Soda Mountain and 10,379 feet on Buffalo Mountain. Offering full day and moonlight tours, Powdercats pampers their guests. For nourishment, guides provide a light breakfast, a full catered lunch, and après ski. For performance, they provide Armada powder skis and Never Summer snowboards. Every guest wears a Backcountry Access avalanche beacon, and no one leaves without quality documentation of the best powder day ever. In its 33 years, Steamboat Powdercats has created a Powdercats Nation of hungry powderhounds. Established with a commitment to living the good life and sustained by people passionate and skilled enough to turn ski bumming into a respected, professional career, Powdercats is a model that works.

Steamboat STARS Healing Through Recreation Given Steamboat’s inclusive values and unique history of producing over 80 Winter Olympic athletes, it’s paradoxical that Steamboat was one of the last mountain towns in the country to have a true adaptive ski program. Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports (STARS) was created in 2006 to provide winter programs, equipment, and scholarships for people with disabilities. Now, STARS’ Executive Director Julie Taulman says, “we’re one of the more accessible, family friendly towns, and a lot of people are choosing Steamboat.” Since its 2006 inception and 2008 expansion to summer programming, STARS has experienced tremendous growth. “We’ve seen 25-30% growth annually,” Julie says. “We serve people from all over the country. Some people from out of town come multiple times throughout each season. We serve locals frequently across all seasons.” For a small nonprofit with an $800,000 budget, eight full-time year round employees, and an average of 11 seasonal instructors, STARS relies on volunteers. More than 200 volunteers are trained to work with people with disabilities, teach lessons, help with camps and equipment, and cook meals. “Our volunteers teach to the standard of our staff,” Julie says. “They help run the programs. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to provide lessons people can afford.”
“We’re here to give people a leg back up, help them regain their independence and self-esteem. We help people adapt so they can go on to enjoy life.” ~ Julie Taulman Photos provided by STARS

For local kids with disabilities, STARS helps them grow up, be independent, participate, and achieve. STARS also serves injured veterans and wounded warriors. Julie describes this work as a form of and method for healing. “We take people who’ve been in accidents,” Julie says, “and help them thrive.” Often times, people who come to STARS were high school football standouts or CEOs of big companies. Suddenly, they’ve endured a tragedy or massive change in their life—potentially affecting their income, family relationships, and ability to work. That’s what STARS is for: when you realize you survived, but you’re wondering what you’re left with. “We’re here to give people a leg back up, help them regain their independence and self esteem,” Julie says. “We help people adapt so they can go on to enjoy life.” Sometimes, it’s the family member that needs healing. “A lot of our families meet each other and connect,” Julie says. “The wife of an injured veteran can meet someone just like her and each understands what the other is going through.”
STARS is a great option for families seeking a vacation where everyone can participate. Programs provide invaluable adventures for families to reconnect by being active and together. “Some families need that confirmation: if we can ski together, we can camp together. STARS helps them visualize opportunities.” True to STARS’ mission of living life without limitations and making the impossible possible, their next milestone will be the construction of Stars Ranch, A Place for Hope & Healing. Located at the eastern edge of town along Highway 40, the ranch will be the hub of STARS. It will be a welcoming community space to bring people to Steamboat and keep them coming back. “Stars Ranch will allow us to provide the therapeutic recreation we want to provide. It will allow us to bring groups together so they can learn from each other and lift each other up on their path to healing,” Julie says. “The ranch is not only for more programming, it’s for more support.” Currently, STARS is halfway through their campaign and will begin construction in spring 2017. Mountain Village Montessori Charter School In its inaugural 2016-2017 school year, Mountain Village Montessori Charter School serves 127 students and aims to develop responsible, self-directed children who become lifelong learners and creative problem solvers. Using carefully prepared environments and multi-age classrooms, Montessori teachers are guides who utilize self-correcting, hands-on learning materials and purposeful activities allowing students to learn at their own pace through discovery.
“I’m thrilled that Steamboat has this school of choice. The 100-year-old Montessori Method teaches children to think for themselves, problem solve, and care about the environment. It encompasses peace education and is a wonderful community of children, staff, and parents.” ~ Clare Berkey, MVMCS Primary Teacher and Parent
Yampa Valley High School The Yampa Valley High School provides a healthy, respectful, and supportive learning environment that promotes cooperation and personal interaction. The small school of choice serves 24 students within the Steamboat Springs School District and caters to students who crave an alternative learning environment. Students are not separated by grade and academics are founded in critical thinking, collaboration, and self-direction. With flexible scheduling, focus on the student as a whole person, and opportunities for independent learning, students can meet their needs and capitalize on their strengths.
“We pride ourselves in having an accepting school culture and a family atmosphere. With flexible scheduling and independent studies, students and staff can think outside the box to prepare for life after high school.” ~ Chuck Rosemond, YVHS Dean of Alternative Education

Home Base Jeff LaRoche and E3 Chophouse
The LaRoche brothers first came to Steamboat to play baseball. Former Minor League pitcher Jeff, Major League first baseman Adam, and Major League third baseman Andy traveled to Colorado with their family for Triple Crown tournaments. Although baseball is in their family genes (their father was a MLB pitcher and coach for over 40 years), Jeff said, “We’re all avid outdoorsmen, so we fell in love with Steamboat. It’s the perfect fit for hunting and fishing.” Years later, the LaRoche family migrated back to Steamboat, each on their own terms but for the same reasons. Using the family owned E3 Ranch in Fort Scott, Kansas, the brothers decided to open a steak house in Steamboat. With a range to restaurant concept, they offer the highest quality Angus beef. Their E3 certified cattle are responsibly raised, humanely treated, hormone free, antibiotic free, and forage based. “The idea going into E3 was that we could cater to a wide variety of demographics, from a man wearing jeans and a cowboy hat to a woman in a cocktail dress and a child in a t-shirt,” Jeff said. “That’s part of the beauty of Steamboat.” Designing a restaurant that tailors to Steamboat’s eclectic population, Jeff admits, contradicts the conventional wisdom of a solid business plan.
Nevertheless, the restaurant continues to grow. E3 Chophouse was voted “Best of the Boat” for Happy Hour the last three years, reflecting its commitment to reasonable pricing and its widespread appeal. Moving forward, Jeff and his group are using the flagship Steamboat restaurant as a model for expansion. “The restaurants won’t be the exact same everywhere you go, but there will be similarities,” Jeff said. Next up is E3 Nashville. “Nashville’s market is very different from Steamboat’s,” Jeff recognizes. Steamboat fluctuates seasonally, presenting benefits and challenges for restaurant owners. “The downturns give us time to breathe and reset, and our employees can go on vacation.” Steamboat has taught Jeff to keep an open mind and roll with the punches. Never knowing which direction life will take you, Jeff says he tries “to keep it fresh and continue to grow.” Part of Jeff’s success is his perspective and attitude. Another part is his team. The brothers’ passion for hunting and the outdoors brought them together with Willie Robertson of A&E’s Duck Dynasty and his family businesses Duck Commander and Buck Commander. Good friends and country singers Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan also joined the Chophouse team, creating a unique and successful celebrity combination.

Between his multiple business endeavors and a new restaurant slated for Nashville, Jeff still chooses to live in Steamboat. He can be location neutral, remotely monitoring daily business transactions. There’s a reason why Jeff calls Steamboat home:
“There’s not a season I don’t enjoy, the people are amazing, and there’s always something to do.” The success of E3 Chophouse in Steamboat left patrons wanting more. The Kansas based E3 Meat Company operates on former MLB first baseman Adam and his wife Jen LaRoche’s sixth generation family ranch and sells products to consumers nationwide. West Elevation An Architect Revived Katie Kiefer was a busy, successful architect in Steamboat when the economic collapse of 2008 spawned financial crises nationwide. Everyone could see that Steamboat’s construction came to a halt, but they couldn’t see the recession’s veiled effect on architects, interior designers, and curators. Katie’s contemporary architectural style has always been rooted in timeless design principles. She connects her work to the landscape, climate, and migration pattern of animals. She wants things to be real and purposeful. Adhering to exceptional standards, Katie refines until only the essential elements of the house remain. While a lot of people in Steamboat want traditional big beams and mountain wood, Katie’s niche is more contemporary. “Since 2008,” she adds, “people are choosing smaller homes and sourcing more efficient and sustainable materials.” Appreciating that architecture and arrangement are intimate means of getting to know people, Katie finds grace in smaller projects. “They’re just as important to people as big projects,” she says. Turning to art and poetry, Katie held her first art show in Steamboat’s First Friday Artwalk in September. “A Fractured Line - Memoirs of an Architect” shared Katie’s personal journey, using verse and images across mediums: watercolor and oil monotypes, silk collagraph, transfer prints, and solarplate. Her work spoke of loss, despair, love, and redemption. In October, Katie opened her new gallery on 9th Street. The front space is a dedicated showroom and the back is used for her architecture business. Katie sees her progression through methods as natural and practical. “I’ve always put art in front of my clients,” Katie said. “Now I do it in a different way.” Booking ahead for the gallery, Katie is excited to connect with creators. She’s looking forward to April—Architecture Month—to celebrate the aesthetic appeal of local and regional architects and interior designers. In her new adaptation, Katie has realized that cross-pollination is powerful. “People looking at art often want to buy for a new home. Or they’re exploring colors and styles for a renovation project.”
Katie’s vision turned a traditional log home into a contemporary work of art. 41

It’s very rare to find a home with this level of privacy, natural beauty, and proximity to town. A creek meanders through the 40-acre property and opportunities for hiking and snowshoeing abound. Every view is punctuated by the lush green of ferns, aspens, and evergreen trees. As you approach the home, you’re immediately aware that you’re entering an exceptional dwelling. The magnificent log construction resembles a work of art—a floating walkway spans the distance from the main home to the caretaker’s apartment. The main home is specifically designed to create warm inviting spaces, with a vision of living in nature guiding the layout. Plentiful windows bring the outdoors and light in from every angle, while many comfortable spaces are ideal for gathering with family and friends. Fat Bikes in the Boat The Steamroller, Powerhouse, Ultimate Adventurer
Fat biking began as an offbeat bike niche in the late 1980s but gained traction in the mainstream market in the mid 2000s. Capturing momentum across the country, fat biking swept into Steamboat and stayed. They’re the monster trucks of bikes; they’re bushwacking ATVs. For passionate riders, outdoor enthusiasts, and wanderlusts, fat bikes are a dream. Fat bikes are not built for speed. They’re built to provide access to places you wouldn’t otherwise be able to go in conditions you wouldn’t otherwise contemplate going. Their wide tires yield great traction and flotation over snow. Running from 3.8 in (97 mm) or larger with rims 2.6 in (66 mm) or wider, tires are kept at lower pressures (8-10 psi). Fat bikes afford versatility and rollover-ability. If you look, you’ll see fat bikers winding around snowpacked single track on Emerald Mountain. You’ll see them (or their headlamps) early morning and evening as they climb groomed cat tracks to the gondola atop Mt. Werner. You’ll see them on Highway 40, forging a stable course through wet, windy, and subzero conditions.
and don’ts. Most areas offering fat bike access do so with restrictions. Don’t ride groomed trails if: your bike tires are narrower than 3.7 inches; your tire pressure is greater than 10 psi; you leave a rut deeper than 1 inch; or you can’t ride in a straight line. Don’t ride in classic tracks. Do ride on the firmest part of the track, yield to all other users, and stay in control. Respect wildlife: just because you can ride somewhere doesn’t mean you should. To be prepared for winter weather conditions, dress like you’re going skiing. Wear layers and a backpack to stash them. Remember that you’ll sweat going up and get cold coming down. Consider wearing your ski helmet and goggles for more warmth and protection. Clipless pedals are fine for commuting or riding on hardpack, but flat pedals and shoes are better for snow and powder. Keep your hands warm with winter specific cycling gloves or pogies (oversized, insulated mitts mounted to your handlebars that cover brake levers, shifters, grips, etc.). Keep your feet warm with wind blocking toe or whole foot covers. If your feet are always cold, you can buy winter biking specific shoes or boots.

From Those Who Chose Steamboat “My husband Mark and I moved to Steamboat because we wanted to be where we could play outside a lot, winter and summer. Ten years and two kids later, Mark is co-owner of Butcherknife Brewing Company, and I couldn’t be happier as a partner in Pediatrics of Steamboat Springs. I love how much the people in this community support one another, and I know this is exactly where I want to raise my kids. Steamboat will always be home to us.” ~ Dana Fitzgerald, MD, FAAP

“Ten years ago, my husband and I decided to move to Steamboat. We wanted to escape the chaos and raise our kids in a town where they could experience the freedoms that reminded us of our lives growing up. Since the move, we spend less time planning and more time living. For my business, I give corporate presentations all over the country. Having an airport 20 miles away is ideal. There have been times when I have presented in Dallas or Atlanta during the day and returned that evening to ride my mountain bike on Emerald Mountain or watch my son ski jump at Howelsen Hill. Steamboat is the ultimate place to come home to and I can’t imagine living anywhere else.” ~ Kristen Race, PhD

Market Report Tipping Point Great Relative Value! It’s hard to imagine this describes Steamboat, but relative to comparable resorts and communities, Steamboat’s real estate market offers buyers an incredible opportunity. As communities and markets mature, there comes a point where they reach critical mass and the experience appeals to an audience with a broad range of financial flexibility. Steamboat is and always has been an amazing, authentic town. Being somewhat isolated geographically, it has maintained its true, real town character. From the first class restaurant scene to bike trails and parks, the pieces of the puzzle are coming together. The secret of the Yampa Valley will remain for only so long. As more visitors realize the complete year round experience offered in Steamboat, we’ll see the demand for real estate increase significantly. 2016 was by far the strongest year for sales since the Steamboat market bottomed in 2012 as evidenced by the number of properties under contract shown in Chart 1. Affirming the improving market is Chart 2, which shows the average sale price is back up to 96% of asking price from a low of 91% in 2010. As 2017 gets under way, we are still finding great properties for buyers, however the inventory is shrinking. If you’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to invest in Steamboat, now is a great time.
