In November of 2020, Miami County elected its first lady commissioner, Brenda Weaver. That victory has come 100 years after women won the right to vote. “I didn’t run because I’m a woman, but it is a very important year for women. I am very grateful to the women and men who gave me their vote of confidence. I want to do a good job as a way to honor the women who worked hard to get us the vote. Marie Stuart Edwards and Ellen Cole Fetters were two local women who helped women get the right to vote and that is always in the back of my mind,” Weaver said. While filling a seat as a commissioner in Miami County will be new to her, Weaver is not new to serving the public. “I have unique qualifications because of working in county government for 29 years. As a former county auditor, I understand the job of a commissioner. The auditor is the secretary to the commissioners and county council. I have been a deputy recorder, elected recorder and elected auditor,” she explained. When asked what goals she would like to meet as a commissioner, she said, “I want to have a better relationship with the county employees and elected officials as well as the citizens of this county.” She also shared she “would love to see more tourism in the county as well as industry. I would like to see a citizens group formed to brainstorm on how to better Miami County,” she added. She also said she looks forward to this new opportunity because she believes she will be able to “have a voice for the citizens of Miami County and the county’s most valuable asset: the employees.” Concerns Weaver has on her mind as she prepares to take on her new position are the “finances of the county” and

Weaver “now we have COVID to deal with,” she shared. The 2020 election brought unusual circumstances because of COVID-19. Republican headquarters, where Weaver would ordinarily spend her evening, was completely empty. No lights, streamers, food, or celebrations. It was a night for Weaver to remember not only because of the election results but because of how strange it was to be away from her republican-party friends. “It was odd for sure. They are my extended family,” she said. Weaver and her husband, Terry, have four children; the late Dean Weaver; Monica Weaver Senk; Carla Weaver and Myles Weaver. They have 11 grandchildren and one great-

Brenda Weaver grandchild. Weaver is involved in a few organizations in the community. She is the president of Miami County Indiana Worth Remembering. She is also president of the Miami County Historical Society. Although she will step down from the position with the historical society, she said she intends to ask if she can be a non-voting representative for the county. As for beginning her job as the first female commissioner, it is natural to wonder if there
may be extra weight on her shoulders because she is the first woman, but Weaver said she doesn’t feel that way. “I really don’t
feel pressure. I am ready and able to go back to work for Miami County. I’m just anxious to serve Miami County!” When 2021 begins, a page of groundbreaking Miami County history will be written. This time it will be about a woman in Miami County who not only has the vote but earned votes from citizens in Miami County to become their first lady commissioner.

Obituaries Randy Lee Nead, 74 Randy Lee Nead, born May 18, 1946, was always known to slip away from a crowd without much fanfare. No long goodbyes, hugs or 'see-yalaters'. Many times, he would excuse himself from family gatherings without a word. Only later would we discover he was already back home, sitting in his chair. On Nov. 1, 2020, Randy got up from bed, unable to sleep, and sat in that favorite chair of his. Finding nothing to watch on TV, he made his last quiet departure. Randy was just 18 years old when the U.S. Military requested his presence in the Vietnam War. He served from December 1964 to September 1966 and became a Helicopter
Crew Chief. There, he earned the Bronze Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, The Cross of Gallantry, three Air Medal awards, and the Vietnamese Medal of Honor. In 1972, he married Carla Ellen Knight of Logansport, who survives. Randy is also survived by his son, Ryan (Michelle) Nead of Miami County, and daughter, Angela (Jim) Turnpaugh of Miami County, five
Sherry Ann Miller Bohn, 64 Sherry Ann (Miller) Bohn passed away peacefully at her home Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020. She has gone to be with her Lord and Savior after fighting an illness for 2½ years. She was born in Lexington, Kentucky, Feb. 7, 1956, to Mary Alice and Wilburn Miller. On Dec. 8, 1979, she married the love of her life, Billy Bohn, and he survives. She retired from the BMV after 29 years of service, where she worked as a devoted license branch manager. She enjoyed bowling, shopping, and collecting antiques. She also enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and friends. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, her children Russell (Kaylee) and Richard Bohn. Also surviving are her 3 grandchildren Jayden, Emersyn, and Nolan Bohn. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother, father and two sis-
ters, Gladys Caisson and Ina Jean Weisenberger. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to Noon Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, at FlowersLeedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru, Indiana. Funeral service will follow at Noon, with Father Adam Mauman officiating. Graveside service will follow at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, attendance is not expected. Cards and flowers may be sent to the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Flowers- Leedy Funeral home. Family and friends may sign the online guestbook at www.flowersleedyallen.com.
grandsons, Thomas, Rhett, Alex, Jarrod and AJ, and one granddaughter, Keira. Also surviving are a sister, Cindy (Steve) Jackson of Galveston, Indiana, along with a niece and nephew and three great nieces and one great nephew. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty (Coleman) Nead and his father, Robert Nead. Randy lived his life on a one mile stretch of road on the eastern edge of Cass County. There, he farmed for 40 years. A self-described "dirt farmer," he loved picking corn and soybeans, especially when sale prices were up. He was an avid critic of rain at the wrong time, breakdowns at the wrong time, and motorists
who wouldn't get over far enough when he was hauling something wide down the road with the tractor. After retiring from farming, he still enjoyed running the combine for the neighbors. He was constantly busy with something; whether it was a project he had planned or a breakdown that needed fixed. He enjoyed 'piddling around' out in his shop, building things with wood, and making improvements to his property. If it was a tree that had a limb that needed cut, something that needed painted, or trim that he was just tired of, he would replace, fix, or rebuild it. Nothing was safe from his desire for improvement. He instilled a good work ethic in both of
his children, proclaiming that it was his job to make sure they "amount to something". He retired from Chrysler Kokomo after 40 years as a Gauge repairman. He was proud of his trade and was good at precision work, even when things 'eyeballed' OK, he insisted it had to be perfect. He attended Valley Fellowship Church in Onward, Indiana, where he enjoyed listening to the sermon, and did his best to sit in the back, and slip in and out unnoticed. Randy's love was his family, who he spent a lot of time with; especially his grandchildren, who sometimes would make a point to walk out to his house without even telling their parents they were leaving. He was
a regular attender of his grandchildren's sports events, plays, programs and the circus, where he very much enjoyed seeing his grandson ride the unicycle. He would often call up his children and want to go out to eat but did not appreciate it when we wouldn't let him pay. He was a dedicated 'snowbird', spending winters in Florida with his wife. He made weekly calls back to frozen Indiana just to tell his children how warm it was outside and to give them the exact temperature. Despite Randy's insistence that after death he be displayed in a glass case so mourners could make a pilgrimage to his farm to pay homage to him, his family has callously decided to
make his final resting place in Ever Rest Memorial Park in Cass County. Randy was laid to rest in a private graveside service Thursday, Nov. 5. There, he is near his mother and father along with his mother-in-law and father-in-law. We will always miss Randy's eclectic sense of humor. He often joked that he would be soon forgotten, but we plan on missing and remembering him for the rest of our lives and looking forward to the Great Reunion we all hope to one day have with him. In lieu of flowers, Randy would have liked donations made to the building project at Valley Fellowship Church, 8892 East 500 South, Walton, IN., 46944.

Born April 6, 1925, in Oak Park, Illinois, to Tobias A. and Nellie (Bradley) Seiler, he was the couple's ninth child and the first to be delivered in the hospital. He was brought into the world by Dr. Clarence Hemingway, father of the novelist Ernest. On Dec. 24, 1943, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty J. Brittain, whom he met at age 12 at a skating party. Their pre-war ceremony was at Amarillo, Texas, where he was stationed for U.S. Army Air Corps airplane mechanics training and would soon leave for gunnery school in Las Vegas. A member of America's Greatest Generation, Toby enlisted in the Army following graduation from Peru High School in 1943. He was a top turret gunner on a B17G airplane and flew 35 missions during World War II, par-
ticipating in campaigns in Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes as part of the 34th Bombing Group, Third Air Division. trips in the dead of winter, helping keep the community warm and fed for 37 years. He and Betty raised five children and moved to Rochester in 1974. They spent time with the NIPSCO friends, camped and took fishing trips. Toby was a handyman extraordinaire, passing his skills to his sons and keeping his property in top shape. He enjoyed landscaping and worked several years at The Blooming Corner. He spent hours upon hours as Betty's crafting backup man. He enjoyed woodworking well into his later years. Toby retired in 1983 and they subsequently spent nearly 20 winters in Florida, enjoying the sun and surf with Betty's sister, Pauline Prible, and her husband Paul. To his grandchildren he was known as the Chicken King, in reference to the hairstyles they gave him and the chicken dance he enjoyed at special occasions. He also was their annual
Santa Claus up until his death. He told really corny jokes and offered banana splits that he sometimes did not produce.
