Maconaquah graduate becomes Orthopaedic Surgeon
Cody Shafer, MD, demonstrates to an employee how to wrap an injured arm during his week of training at St. VincentKokomo, Ascension Medical Group. Photo by Michelle Boswell By Michelle Boswell mboswell@thepaperofmiami.com
Cody Shafer has always wanted to come back home to practice medicine and serve in the community where he grew up. His dream has now become a reality. Shafer, a 2007 Maconaquah High School graduate, has been spending the last week getting familiar with the company he now works for in Kokomo, Indiana. St. Vincent, Ascension Medical Group, is where he will begin to see patients working as an Orthopaedic Surgeon. He will also have a clinic every Wednesday in Peru in the American Health Network Building, 315 West Old Key Drive.
In 2011, Shafer graduated from DePauw University. He was set on becoming a physician since shortly after graduating from high school. He made the decision to become a doctor while in college. He said there were multiple experiences that resulted in him becoming a physician. “I volunteered in the Operating Room at Putnam County Hospital in Greencastle, Indiana; interned at St. Vincent-Kokomo during the summer and helped organize a medical brigade to the Amazon rain forest in Ecuador,” he said. Shafer, son of Russell and Brenda Shafer, graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 2015. He completed a five-year residency in orthopaedic surgery from Indiana University in June 2020. And
like many other graduates across the country, his graduation was a virtual one and that is how his family was able to see it happen. When asked what if going through medical school was a scary experience, he said it was like “drinking water through a fire hose. The information learned in medical school was not overly complex but there is an overload of information that you learn in a short amount of time,” Shafer explained. He felt one of the most difficult aspects of being in medical school was “finding a healthy balance.” Studying for several hours every day is a must but Shafer feels it is also important to make time for family, friends, exercising and sleeping.”

FOP #72 awards scholarships By Kevin Smith Vice President and Scholarhip ChairmanMiami County FOP Lodge #72 The Miami County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #72 is pleased to announce three winners of our academic scholarship for 2020. Each year, three graduating seniors from the local high schools are chosen to win a $500 scholarship. Candidates are evaluated based on their academic performance, extracurricular and community service activities, and other factors including an essay asking how their career goals will benefit their community. This year, the three winners were: Summer Thomlison, Maconaquah High School; Maryann Freeman, North Miami
Shafer He found the most challenging part of his residency was working nearly 80 hours a week in the hospital while still trying to find one to two hours every day to study. With challenges are met with determination, rewards usually will follow. Shafer has found his reward through helping people. “The ability to help change and positively impact the lives of my patients” is what Shafer enjoys. “Patients come to be evaluated for debilitating knee arthritis after failing conservative therapy. Being able to perform a total knee replacement where patients can become pain free and live an active lifestyle just a few months later” is something Shafer finds rewarding. Arthritis, Shafer said, is a condition that a “significant percentage of the population will have pain due to that condition at some point in their lifetime.” While Shafer will be able to treat those who may need a knee replacement, he is able to help all age groups. “I will treat sports injuries in young athletes and fix hip fractures in the elderly” and anyone in between those ages, he explained.
Scholarship winners for 2020 are left to right: Summer Thomlison, Maconaquah, Maryann Freeman, North Miami and Brianna Meeks, Peru High School. High School and Brianna Meeks, Peru High School. This fall, Summer will be attending Purdue University to study Animal Science and Biological Science with hopes of becoming a livestock veterinarian. Maryann will be attending Ball State University to study Elementary Education with hopes of becoming a Fifth or Sixth grade teacher.
Brianna will be attending Indiana UniversityKokomo to also study Elementary Education with hopes of becoming a Second grade teacher. All three winners have high aspirations and we, the Miami County FOP lodge, are very delighted to help ease the burden of college expenses to help these three achieve their dreams.
continued from Page 1 Now that Shafer has started his career, he can look back on the recent past and take in all that he has accomplished. “I was always pretty excited about going to medical school. Obviously, it was difficult, but I also enjoyed the four years. I met some of my best friends while in medical school,” he said. In fact, Shafer has met many people along the way through his training. Specifically, he met Jordan Renshaw while he was working as a summer intern at St. VincentKokomo nearly 10 years ago. They met in CPR class and she was volunteering at the hospital. They married in 2017. Jordan, along with Dr. Shafer’s parents have been very understanding when Shafer was putting in long hours. “I often would make it home too late to eat dinner with my wife and unable to attend family gatherings on holidays because of call obligations,” Shafer said. “They were always supportive and understanding,” he added. “Shafer said his wife has been extremely supportive throughout the last 10 years. That support started long ago for Shafer while he was still living at home as a boy and young man in school.
“I would not be in the position I am today without my parents. Mom always pushed me to do well academically and Dad instilled a strong work ethic from helping him on the farm,” he said. Shafer’s mother has been a teacher at Maconaquah for over 30 years. Now that all the years of college, medical school, internships and residency are behind Shafer, he is looking forward to a long career as an orthopaedic surgeon. When asked what he hopes his patients will feel about him as a physician, he replied, “to be known as a caring and compassionated physician.” Shafer says he is excited to be back home serving the community he grew up in. When asked what he hopes to be doing in 25 years, he said, “still working as an orthopaedic surgeon in this same community!” Shafer, who began working for St. VincentKokomo Aug. 1, has a clinic in Kokomo. He will also be available to see patients in Peru on Wednesdays. He will operate in Kokomo and is open for new patients. If you would like to schedule an appointment with Dr. Shafer, call 765-2368170.
