Hallmark store in Peru

for over 30 years closing

Webb’s Hallmark Store in Peru announced they will be closing their store after being in the community for over 30 years. Clearance of

the store began Monday, Jan. 11.

Peru High School graduate assigned to ISP Post Peru – Recently, 36 probationary troopers from the 80th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy graduated. One of those officers, Kegan Kern, was assigned to the Indiana State Police Peru Post and has started three months of field training with veteran officers. Kern graduated from the

80th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy Dec. 19, 2020. During his 25 weeks of training, Kern received over 600 hours of classroom instruction as well as nearly 400 hours of hands-on practical scenario-based training. Some areas of training included criminal and traffic

law, crash investigations, emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics, firearms, and a host of other subjects related to modern policing. Kern is now assigned to train with veteran troopers for the next 13 weeks before being released on solo patrol.

Kern is a veteran of the United States Air Force. He served four years obtaining the rank of senior airman. He is a 2014 graduate of Peru High School and holds an associate degree in criminal justice. Kern and his wife currently reside in Miami County.

Spreading cleanliness Students prepare hygiene kits for those leaving criminal justice system By Joseph Slacian jslacian@thepaperofwabash.com Students from the Heartland Career Center’s Criminal Justice classes spent part of Friday, Jan. 8, bagging personal hygiene kits as part of a community service project. The kits will be presented to individuals needing assistance getting re-established in their community following incarceration or while involved in the criminal justice system. The bags were made possible through a $1,300 grant from the Community Foundation of Wabash County to Growing Grounds, a not-forprofit agency within the Wabash Church of the Brethren. Growing Grounds received the grant at the end of

2020. “Although these clients (inmates leaving corrections) may receive financial assistance through the state, those monies cannot be used for hygiene supplies to meet their personal needs,” Growing Grounds President Marti Striker said. “(The Growing Grounds committee) attempted to address those needs but needed additional financial assistance to fulfill them. “We are grateful for the grant the Wabash Community Foundation provided to facilitate this need,” Mrs. Striker, a retired Wabash County Probation Officer, added. The class performs a community service project each school year. “This gives them a little bit of a head start” when leaving the criminal justice system, Striker told his students. Each student in the classes filled 10 bags. Male students filled bags for men while the female students filled bags for the women. In all, 400 bags were filled. The kits included such things as soap, razors, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant, wet wipes and body wipes, and shampoo and condition. Bags for females also included feminine hygiene projects. Lynnville Waldo Bliss, Jr., 93 Lynnville Waldo Bliss Jr. was born in Buffalo, Indiana, May 27, 1927. He was the son of Lynnville Waldo Bliss Sr. and Inez Shell Bliss. They preceded him in death. He graduated from Buffalo High School in 1945. He won a scholarship to play basketball at Purdue, but Uncle Sam drafted him into the Army. He was married to Joan Reed Bliss Oct. 6, 1947, until May 1958. He married Flossie Schroder in May 1958. She preceded him in death Jan. 17, 1997. He lived in Indiana until 1967 when he moved to Union City, Michigan, where he lived for 40 years. While in Michigan, he owned his own carpet and flooring business, where he taught his grandson the trade. His love of camping had led him to Michigan, where he and several family members and friends helped build his house on the lake, where the grandkids had many wonderful memories. Besides camping, he

loved fishing and playing euchre, which he taught his kids and grandkids. But most of all, he loved being around his family and friends. He was wellknown for his jokes and being ornery. He never knew a stranger. He is survived by his 5 children: Cheryl Seymour (Larry) of London, Ohio, Barb Hunt of Peru, Mike Ruede (Anne) of Circleville, Ohio, Pam Hileman of Peru, and Peggy Mabie (Butch) of Elkhart. Frieda Harding Musall, 65 Frieda Harding Musall lost her battle with pancreatic cancer Monday, Jan. 4, 2021. She passed away at home, with her husband Ron at her side. She was born in Peru Jan. 15, 1955, to Asie and Vivian Harding, also from Peru, and they survive. Also surviving are one brother, Jack Harding of Peru, a stepsister, Anita Flintcraft of Peru, two nieces, and three great nieces. Frieda was preceded in death by her stepfather, George Townsend. transporter for Indiana R.V., and he enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Skiles, Rochester; three sons, Andrew (Michelle) Skiles; Jeremy (Carla) Skiles; and Nathan Skiles, all of Rochester; eleven grand-

children; and eighteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe (Dorothy) Skiles, Homestead, Florida; two sisters, Mary Jake Skiles, Brookville, Ohio; and Martha Skiles, (companion Paul Parkevich), Logansport; and one sister-in-law, Betty

Skiles, Delphi. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John J. Skiles and Jesse Lee Skiles; and one sister, Miriam Kinzie. Public visitation will be from 11 a.m. until noon Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, at McClain Funeral Home.

Obituaries Alice Margaret Dawalt, 79 Alice Margaret Dawalt, 79, of Peru, passed away at 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021, at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Carbonear, Newfoundland June 27, 1941, the daughter of Thomas and Josephine (Hatch) Meaney. A Newfoundland native, Alice graduated high school at the age of 15 while she lived in a lighthouse and developed a fondness for lighthouses. She went to Littledale University. Alice was a waitress at Harvey Hinklemeyers for more than 20 years, where she was crowned the “Best Waitress Ever.” She cared deeply about her co-workers and customers. She was a member of the Catholic Church but also attended the Denver UMC and the Peoria UMC. A devoted mother and grandmother, Alice enjoyed spending time with family and friends and relished going to softball and basketball games. She always made everyone she came in contact with feel extra special and she made you feel like an “adopted” member of the family. A

member of the Red Hat Society, she also was an avid card player and thrived on correcting bad grammer. Alice was a joy to be around and a true giver in every sense. She was humble, generous, smart, funny, and sassy, giving all of which demonstrated in her daily words and actions. Anthony M. “Tony” Benedict, 26 Anthony M. “Tony” Benedict, 26, of Peru passed away Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021, in Kokomo. Born Jan. 20, 1994, in Wooster, Ohio, he was the son of Scott Benedict and Cindy Benedict Rhodes. He was a 2012 Kokomo High School graduate where he had been active in multiple student groups. Tony was currently working at the Coterie Bar in Kokomo and just previous of that at Zinn Kitchens in Flora. Besides spending his time with his wife, friends, and family, Tony also had a love and an eye for photography, a taste for good food and drink, and an ear for amazing music. Throughout his time with us he was involved in a wide range of activities including wrestling (as both a student and coach), soccer, assisting with Bridges Outreach in Kokomo, SpringHill

Camps, Oakbrook Student Ministries, and the Lords of Social Distance Bike Club to name a few. He formerly attended and served at Oakbrook Church in both Kokomo and Peru. On Oct.10, 2020, he married his best friend Sarah J. Gould, she survives. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Benedict of Peru, mother, Cindy Rhodes of Kokomo, father, Scott Benedict of Kokomo, brother, Ross

Bonniebelle Bonnie Horner, 86

Bonniebelle (Bonnie) Horner, 86, of rural Converse, passed away at 12:45 p.m., Monday, Jan. 4, 2021, at Century Villa Health Care Center. She was born in Miami County Jan. 7, 1934, the daughter of Paul and Bernice Jenkins Ramsey. She married Norman “Bud” Horner Dec. 20, 1974, and he survives. Bonnie graduated from Bunker Hill High School in the class of 1952 and made a career at American Stationary in Peru before changing career paths and eventually retiring from First Farmers Bank and Trust of Converse, Indiana. Bonnie enjoyed her involvement with the Deer Creek Do-Ettes and was a member of Amboy Friends Church. She had a life-saving relationship with Jesus Christ and no fear in death knowing that her eternity was secure in Him. Combined, Bud

and Bonnie have 5 children, her son and daughter and Bud’s 3 sons respectively: Barry (Leila) Bowyer, Bobbi (Bret) Renbarger, Frank (Jenny) Horner, Mark (Denise) Horner and Gary (Jane) Horner. Later in life Bonnie was blessed to be grandmother to 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Bonnie leaves behind her husband, brother-inlaw, and sister-in-law (Tom and Carol Horner),

children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and four brothers: Deane (Laverna) Ramsey, Don (Marlene-living) Ramsey, Dale (Doris – living) Ramsey and Delton (Nancy) Ramsey. A service celebrating the life of Bonnie Horner was held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021, at the Amboy Friends Church, 110 E. Pennsylvania Avenue, Amboy, with pastor Dwight Elliott officiating. Burial was in the Park Lawn Cemetery. Family and friends gathered from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday at the Amboy Friends Church. A complainant at 2194 W St. Road. 18, Kokomo reported Tommy King, previous resident was knocking on his door, honking his horn and would not leave. The complainant did not answer the door. They advised King thought the complainant was stealing his mail and packages. The caller then stated he sent the boxes back with the USP drivers each time one was delivered. King was not in the area upon arrival but was found a short time later and officers spoke to him. King was told to file a claim with eBay and check with USP while updating his delivery information with both companies. A property damage accident was reported at W St. Road. 218 and S U.S. 31, Peru. No injuries were reported,

and a crash report was completed. A complainant at S U.S. 31 and W St. Road 18, Kokomo reported an elderly male stumbling down the highway. Upon further investigation, the male was not elderly nor drunk. The 18year-old was walking home to Maple Lawn Mobile Home Park from McClure’s Gas Station. All checked okay. A report of criminal mischief was taken at E Market St. and S Railroad St, Bunker Hill. This is an ongoing investigation. A possible structure fire was reported at 2032 Shaw Avenue, Peru. All checked OK. A civil issue regarding the purchasing of a vehicle from a friend was reported at 3010 March St, Peru. An argument between a teen and her mother occurred at 12948S U.S 31, Lot 26, Maple Lawn Village, Kokomo. Both subjects agreed to remain calm for the evening. A subject was driving in circles at S Miami St. and W3rd St, Peru. Everything was checked OK.

Crystal Bunch was the driver, and a state report was completed. A male at 381 S Yorick St, Denver, advised his girlfriend lives with him and she purchased a microwave and ceiling fan for residence. Male advised items have been installed. Male stated female did purchase them but did not think she should be able to take them when she moves out because they were already installed.
