Grand Opening May 1 By Michelle Boswell mboswell@thepaperofmiami.com Jeff Grant, owner of Lake Stop, 364 E 500 S, Peru, intends to make his new store the one stop folks make on their way to Mississinewa Lake or on their way to and from work or school. No matter the destination, Grant hopes to make Lake Stop the stop along the way for whatever your needs may be. Grant plans to have just about everything anyone could want or need when they want to spend time camping, boating, or fishing and then some. “I’ve always thought there was a need for something on this corner. We like to fish, and we had a big boat until we bought this place and there was no easy access with a big boat and big trailer to go get bait and tackle. I called Roy Bryant and told him we’re going buy the old dog pound and here we are,” Grant said. “The nice thing is all the traffic is coming from 31. You can see the Lake Stop sign for three quarters of a mile and they can pull in right here and go down the hill to the store, get what you need and pull right out,” Grant said. He added when the place is all done, semis will be able to pull in, too. Once you get close to Lake Stop, it is hard to miss his new “yard art.” It is an old truck that is similar to the truck in the movie, “Cars.” Most would know the truck by the name of “Mater.” Grant is asking the public to help him name his art. You can go on Facebook to the Lake Stop page and get in on the fun. Grant has been working on Lake Stop for the last year getting everything prepared such as the building, to ordering supplies and getting licenses. But there has been so much more to getting it all set and ready. “Everyone has been super helpful. The people at the courthouse have been great with all my questions. Local businesses have been amazing,” Grant shared. What can one expect to find at Lake Stop? “Snacks, bread, chips, condiments, candy bars, apple cider slushies from Doud’s Orchard along with fresh produce in the cooler from Doud’s.” Grant added the slushies “are amazing!” “In the summer, we will have a farmer’s market outside with sweet corn, green beans and fruit.

Jeff Grant puts the finishing touches on his sign near his new business, Lake Stop, located at 364 E, 500 S., Peru. The grand opening for his store is set for Saturday, May 1. Photo by MIchelle Boswell Grant wants everyone to know they have the “good ice” people want for their fountain drinks. While Grant is very happy with his store, he plans to expand in the future to make more room for more items. “We’ll have the best bait in the state! A lot of thought went into this operation. There’s a biological filter, chiller, charcoal filter. There’s a lot more to keeping fish than one may realize,” Grant explained. One aspect about Grant’s business he is certain he will not have is the “smell.” “You know most bait places smell like fish. We won’t,” he said. Once inside Lake Stop, you can’t miss “Lake Stop Kevin.” He is the elk head hanging on the wall in the store. Grant bought the elk head from

a friend named Kevin, hence the name. Grant was born in Miami County but lived all along the East Coast because his father was in the Navy, but Grant has been back in this area for nearly 19 years. He has worked for Norfolk and Southern for the last 16 years. Grant is married to Ronna Grant and they have two children, Jacob Grant, 13, and Jobe Ulshafer, 19. The entire family along with close friends will help run the store. Grant said the store will be open year-round. He wants people to use his store for not only bait, snacks and supplies while camping and fishing but also to keep Lake Stop in mind when heading to and from school or on the way to or from work. Jeff Grant and his son, Jacob, stand in front of Lake Stop, a new store opening in Miami County near the intersection of 500 S and Strawtown Pike. The truck is their new yard art that has yet to be named. Photo by Michelle Boswell why people should make Lake Stop their stop along the way to wherever they may be going, Grant had this to say: “We are clean, we are friendly. We don’t have a lot of expensive lures because our prices are comparable, and we have a great selection. There are 12 different flavors of fountain sodas and the good ice. We will have tobacco. Our coffee is Copper Moon and will come from Lafayette. It will be roasted and ground there. Easy in, easy out. We will have doughnuts eventually. I haven’t talked to any vendors yet about that, but we will have them. We will also have firewood and ice for coolers. Pretty much something for everyone,” Grant shared. “We will have giveaways May 1. Maybe some kind of fishing game to win prizes until they are gone,” he said. Grant has applied for a liquor license and hopes
to have that squared away soon. “It has been such a crazy, expensive and lengthy process. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone. I’ve had so much positive response about this place. I could’ve opened three months ago but it wouldn’t have been right, and I want everything right.” Lake Stop hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the week. He’s not
sure about the weekends just yet but as the summer goes on, it will be later. “As it
gets darker later, I’m sure we will be open later, too,” Grant said.

North Miami, Maconaquah and Peru Schools to recieve federal stimulus money
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) announced Monday the estimated funds that public school districts across the state will receive as part of the third round of federal stimulus dollars (American Rescue Plan Act). Together, these school allocations total nearly $1.8 billion. Planning allocations for North Miami, Maconaquah and Peru Community schools are as follows: North Miami, $955,953.95; Maconaquah, $3,421,784.21 and Peru, $ 4,561,802.29. Planning allocations for Indiana’s non-

public schools, which together total an additional $78 million, will be released later this spring. “Over the past year, this is the third round of federal funding allowing many Indiana schools access to unprecedented resources to sustainably invest in their future,” said Dr. Katie Jenner, Indiana Secretary of Education. “While the needs may vary from one school to the next, it’s critical that schools are strategically planning to maximize their return on investment, in turn achieving the greatest outcomes for students.” With this funding,
schools can reimburse approved expenses incurred through September 2024 that address some of the greatest challenges schools continue to face as a result of the COVID19 pandemic. Per federal requirements, schools must use at least 20 percent of these funds to support accelerated learning opportunities for students, as schools work to make up for lost instructional time due to COVID-19. These evidence-based interventions may include summer learning or enrichment, comprehensive afterschool programs, extended school years programs, etc.

Legal NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED INCREASE OF FEES TO CONNECT TO TOWN OF CONVERSE WATER AND WASTEWATER UTILITY SERVICES Property owners, ratepayers, and other interested parties in or served or to be served by the Converse, Indiana water and wastewater utilities ("Town Utilities") services provided by the Town of Converse, Indiana ("Town"). You are hereby notified that a public hearing will be held by the Town Council of the Town, at the Converse Town Hall, 210 N. Jefferson St., Converse, IN 46919, commencing at 6:00 p.m., on May 13, 2021. The purpose of the hearing is to consider increases in fees to connect customers to Converse municipal water and wastewater utility services. At the hearing, interested persons may be heard concerning the proposed changes. The proposed ordinance sets and/or amends connection fees to Converse water and wastewater utility services, effective for June 1, 2021, as follows: 1) $950.00 for customers inside the Town corporate boundaries to connect to Converse municipal water utilities service; 2) $1,450.00 for customers outside the Town corporate boundaries to connect to Converse municipal water utilities service; 3) $950.00 for customers inside the Town corporate boundaries to connect to Converse municipal wastewater utilities service; and 4) $1,450.00 for customers outside the Town corporate boundaries to connect to Converse municipal wastewater utilities service. Pursuant to IC 8-1.5-3-8.l(d), said connection fee variances of 53% increase for outside Town corporate boundaries connections, compared to inside Town corporate boundaries connections, are due to the increased costs for fuel; increased distances, more difficult terrain, increased materials, increased labor costs, and other related costs required to extend municipal utility connection services to customers' properties situated outside the Town corporate boundaries. Other than the changes set forth, above, all other rates and charges of the Town Utilities and terms of service thereof will remain unchanged. The complete text of the proposed ordinance is available for examination and copying at the Office of the Clerk-Treasurer at the Town Hall of the Town of Converse, 210 N. Jefferson St., Converse, IN 46919 during normal business hours and will be available at the public hearing. Following the adoption of the ordinance, users located outside the Converse corporate boundaries may be entitled to petition the commission under section 8.3 of IC 8-1.5-3 to review and adjust rates and charges imposed on the users if a petition under section 8.2 of IC 8-1.5-3 or under IC 36-9-23-26.1 with respect to the same ordinance has not been filed. On May 13, 2021, the Town Council shall consider, and may take action on, the proposed ordinance. Dated: April 8, 2021 4/14, 4/21/21
