Couple organizes holiday cheer on Broadway By Michelle Boswell mboswell@thepaperofmiami.com
We’ve all heard the saying, ‘It is better to give than to receive.” Terrie Turnpaugh is one who takes that to heart and applies it in Miami County. On Friday, Dec.18 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Turnpaugh and her husband, Jim, put together an event for Miami County to enjoy. They had a Christmas Cruise and invited Miami County to participate and observe safely from their vehicles. “My husband and I were driving
through town to see the lights around the courthouse. And my husband said, ‘it’s really sad that the Santa house is there but the kids cannot see him. It’s almost torture.’ So, that got my wheels spinning as usual. There’s got to be something I can do so these kids can see Santa safely. Then I thought the summer “Cruizin on Broadway” that we did downtown was such a hit, why See Cheer, Page 2
Miami County children were able to meet a Minion during the Cruise-in.

Cheer not have another one like that with Santa and other characters, we could still social distance, it’s safe, and families can drive by as we wave at them. So, I began asking my friends, Justin Eikenberry, Josh Yoder, and Jack Rhinaman, the House Santa, for help and of course they pulled through for me. Justin provided most of the costumes, except for my husbands and my own. Lisa Loe provided me with the Mrs. Claus outfit. My husband looks like Santa anyway, but his costume was actually an elf carrying Santa. It was comical. Santa Paws from Pampered Pets offered his services as well,” Turnpaugh said. Many cars filled with high spirits and smiles drove through downtown Peru to see the event. Volunteers in costumes stood on every corner from Broadway to Sixth Street on both sides waving at the audience on wheels. Turnpaugh said the event was a success and “I couldn’t have asked for a better turn out.” Turnpaugh, who has owned Terrie & Co. Salon for 27 years has been known to give back to her community in many ways. Some may recall watching movies on a big screen in Maconaquah Park at the Amphitheater. Turnpaugh spearheaded that endeavor. Despite the challenges she has faced like many other business owners all across the country, she has continued to provide salon services to her clients in the most safe and compliant ways that she can. “I love owning my own business because I have a lot of ideas, I can do what I want, and I can make sure my staff and clients are treated the way they should be. It does come with some trials as well, especially when COVID hit. It has hit salons hard. I pray we can all recover,” she said. On top of dealing with COVID-19 and the hardships it has brought, Turnpaugh had an accident and broke her left shoulder

Santa Paws Snoopy socket. But, in Terrie Turnpaugh fashion, she didn’t let these setbacks hold her back from giving to others. “I am recovering well from my shoulder injury. My ortho doctor told me it would take three months to a year to recover and it was probably the most trying time of my life and most painful. But I was determined to work hard to get back to my regular life and back into the salon. I hit my goal and was back within three months. I still have some recovering to do but it will come in time,” Turnpaugh said. When asked why she felt compelled to put together such an event in such challenging times, Turnpaugh said, “This was just to lift the spirits of our community this year due to COVID. With the downtown Christmas Open House being canceled along with the Santa house, we needed this. So, let’s pray we get back to normal next year.” Although Turnpaugh organized the event and participated as Mrs. Claus, she had volunteers who helped wrap the event up to present to the community. She sends many thanks to: “Santa and his helper, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Rhinaman; Mickey Mouse, Josh Yoder; Minnie
Olaf Mouse, Rilei Boggs; Minion, Laura Julian; Olaf, Emili Black; Santa Paws Snoopy, Dennis Graves and Jim Turnpaugh, Santa elf. She also wanted to thank the City of Peru for allowing her to put this event together. “I would much rather give than to receive. I have always been that way. I am a people pleaser and I love to help in any way I can. Our favorite motto WWJD (What Would Jesus Do). After all the planning for the event and seeing it through, what did Turnpaugh feel was the most rewarding aspect of it all? “To see the happy, jolly faces on those kids faces is what made it all worth it. There was even some senior citizens who drove by several times. It was enjoyed by all ages.” Turnpaugh shared. Continuing with her giving attitude, Turnpaugh shared what she wants all of us to have now and in the future. “Peace and health be with us all.”
