Boys Golf State Champion By Michelle Boswell mboswell@thepaperofmiami.com

Kash Bellar did it! He is the 2021 IHSAA Boys Golf State Champion. The 2021 Peru High School graduate became the “comeback kid” when he won the Boys Golf Championship at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana, on June 1516. Bellar came close to the title two years ago but on the last six holes of the tournament, he began to struggle and ended the tournament in eighth place. That didn’t stop him from trying again. Bellar, the son of Chuck and Taz Bellar, has been preparing for another chance since that last tournament but the road to get there wasn’t always smooth. Bellar’s parents have witnessed firsthand just how rocky the road was sometimes. “It’s been years of work. The meltdowns, the “I’m quitting, I can’t do it” to rallying Kash Bellar, center, embraces his parents, Chuck and Taz Bellar during the reception held in Kash’s honor at Peru High School after winning the IHSAA Boys Golf Tournment. Bellar Coaches Clint Matthews and J. J. Burns were also there to congratulate Bellar. Coach Matthews said, “I couldn’t be prouder of Kash. He has put in so much hard work for four years. Couldn’t be more deserving based on everything he's done and been through. It’s the second time being there. He got himself in position a few years ago and he was close. It’s been a goal since then and unfortunately, he didn’t get to have a season last year (COVID-19), so he’s waited two long years to go back, and he made the most of it. Matthews has been coaching for seven years at PHS. J.J. Burns, in his fifth year as assistant coach for Peru Boys Golf Team said, “I’m just really, really happy for Kash. He played unbelievable, not just the last two days but all spring. I’m excited for what this means for our program, our school, and our community. It's not every day that we have state champions come back. It was incredible!” Superintendent Sam Watkins, who was also in attendance at the reception for Bellar, had this to say about Bellar’s success. “Well, first this is a huge win for Kash and his family and a huge win for our golf program and our other sports programs. He’s been a stellar athlete and student at Peru. His family has a great presence in our community and we’re just

very glad they chose Peru. We’re so proud of Kash.” Peru High School principal Paul Frye was at the reception to honor Bellar. He said, “good things happen to those who work hard. Kash has had many opportunities and he’s taken advantage of every one of them. He’s out there every time we are at Rock Hollow playing ourselves…he’s out there working on the course, hitting balls and it makes us extremely proud. Very great guy!” Mrs. Bellar credited her husband for how well Kash did because of the time and practice his Dad put in to help Kash improve his game. But Mr. Bellar said, “As a parent, you know, you give them guidance…do your homework, pick up your clothes, go hit some balls. I did give him guidance but he’s the one who put in the work. He’s

driven,” Mr. Bellar said. Mr. Bellar shared his thoughts about the day and how it all turned out. “I’m elated for him. He has put in the time the last five or six years to work on this. Everything kind of fell in place for him today. He had the opportunity two years ago and it was probably inexperience, and it took him awhile to get over that. I’m ecstatic for him. It was a good day of redemption for him.” But as the man of the hour, how was Kash Bellar feeling about the win? “I feel pretty

good right now. It’s a good feeling and it’s nice to know that hard work pays off,” Bellar said with a smile. When asked if there are children who are interested in playing golf competitively, what advice could he give them? Bellar said, “Just keep playing. Don’t stop. Keep playing and have a fun time with it.” Bellar will be attending Ball State in the fall as a freshman and will be on the golf team. No doubt they will chirp with excitement to have the state champion on their team.

Miami County United Way to receive second COVID-19 grant worth $103,135 Peru – United Way of Miami County is pleased to announce that it will receive a second COVID-19 Economic Relief Initiative grant for $103,135 from Indiana United Ways, the state professional association of which United Way of Miami County is a member. The grant will be used to support our community in meeting basic human needs brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant is one of 47 grants that Indiana United Ways is making to member organizations and community foundations through the initiative, which was made possible by funding Indiana United Ways received from Lilly Endowment Inc. “United Way of Miami County has been a key convener and coordinator of our community’s response to meet human needs for

decades. Even before this crisis, we knew that 28% or 1 in 5 families in Miami County were not able to make ends meet - despite working. In the wake of COVID, those needs became even more dire. Thanks to the generous, continued support of Lilly Endowment to our State Association, we can continue to help our community, through nonprofit partners, deal with and hopefully resolve the impacts of this trying time,” said Morgan Gold, Board Chair for United Way of Miami County. The second COVID19 Economic Relief Initiative grant again calls for United Ways that receive funding to leverage partnerships and relationships to better meet COVID-related basic needs aligned with the social determinants of health as defined by the CDC. Specifically, United Way of Miami County

plans to focus on the areas of mental health, rent and utility assistance, transportation, homelessness, and child care by providing sub-grants to selected local agencies through November 2021. In April 2020, Lilly Endowment helped Indiana United Ways establish the COVID19 Economic Relief Initiative with an initial $30 million grant. Lilly Endowment made an additional $15 million grant in March to Indiana United Ways to support the initiative. Both grants are part of Lilly Endowment’s overall grantmaking to help organizations meet COVID-related needs. Since March 2020, Lilly Endowment has made grants totaling more than $210 million to organizations working in Indiana and across the nation as they respond to the pandemic.
