Unofficial lighting at courthouse brings cheer By Michelle Boswell mboswell@thepaperofmiami.com
It may have not had the crowds that normally accompany the event, but the tree-lighting ceremony on the courthouse lawn still took place Saturday, Nov. 21. The lighting of the Christmas decor normally takes place on the night of the Christmas Parade and the Downtown Christmas Open House but because of the increase in COVID cases in Miami County, all three events were canceled. That didn’t stop the Christmas spirit that runs deep in the veins of Paul Forman with Light Up! Peru. He decided to go forward with hanging lights, installing displays, and getting Santa’s House ready for the area’s youth. As soon as he had everything in place with the help of volunteers and Peru Utilities, it was time to light up the west side of the courthouse lawn with Christmas cheer. Because of the rise in COVID cases, Forman, did not want to encourage peo-
ple to come out and watch the event. He, along with The Paper of Miami County, decided it would be safer to do a surprise unveiling of the lights for Miami County through a Facebook live feed. Although Forman and others tried to keep the event secret, a few people found out about the plan and came out to celebrate the accomplishment with Forman and other volunteers. After doing an interview for the live feed, a countdown took place. Counting down from 5, Forman gave the signal for volunteer Joe Greene and Forman’s wife, Gina, to plug in the lights.
