Jackson through the years including Tom Rusk and Dave Vitek who helped me a lot during my summer working there. I also greatly admired Elaine Craig who was a reporter with the Peru Tribune. Bo Buffington and Kathi Hoover were the young women I most admired while in circus and was fortunate to perform with them and Brian Miser my first couple years on the flying trapeze. Circus trainer Bill Anderson taught me so much about courage and teamwork. And, I have to say my biggest fans were my parents, and they're also the ones who, by far, inspired me the most. Their strength through the years, especially after we lost my twin brother in a car crash in 1983, inspired me to be
strong in life,” Jackson shared. Lynn Gebhart, Jackson’s twin brother, died in a drunk-driving accident in July of 1983. This devastating event in Jackson’s life was brought to the surface when Jackson covered a drunkdriving story in the early 1990’s. This story became deeply personal to Jackson because of the loss she and her family endured. She came back to Peru to interview her parents, Dick and Margaret Gebhart, about the loss of their son hoping their experience could make a difference in other’s lives. Over the years, just like the drunkdriving story, Jackson has found there are difficult moments to navigate while reporting the news. “By far, the most
difficult part of my job is reporting about a someone's loss. Especially when it's a child. All of our stories, positive or negative, are about people. And, when they're sad or hurting because of the loss of a child, it breaks my heart,” she explained. For Jackson, there is more to journalism than just reporting a story on TV. “Journalism is about finding out the facts and telling an ethical story while caring and serving. I've always tried to dedicate my professional life to those things while being myself,” she said. Those qualities in a journalist require discipline and Jackson has advice for those who are interested in becoming a journalist.
“My best advice? Work harder than what you think "hard" is and always be yourself. Also? Connect with people you admire and learn all you can from them. And remember... getting into broadcast journalism isn't "being on tv." If you think it is, you may be embarking on the wrong journey,” she said. And a journey it has been so far for Jackson. Her aspirations for her future while in college did not come close to what has transpired over the years because of her dedication and hard work. “When I was in college, I dreamed of starting out in broadcast journalism in an even smaller market than Fort Wayne and moving my way up every few years to a bigger
city. But, when I got an internship in college in Fort Wayne and got to begin my career so close to home with my first job, I soon realized what a blessing it was in
many ways. So, I stayed! I never in a million years even thought about being honored in such a way. I just hoped I'd have what it takes to last a while and work
hard day to day. It's a dream come true to see all those years marked this way. My heart is full,” she said. Someone saw in See Jackson, Page 4

Clockwise - Linda (Gebhart) Jackson performs a double somersault on the flying trapeze in the early 1980’s. Jackson conducts an interview. Senior pictures of Jackson and her late twin brother, Lynn Gebhart.
Jackson Jackson what she did not see in herself until it was brought to her attention. “I realized in high school how much I loved to write and communicate. Mainly? I loved to talk! Especially on the phone with friends. But, truly... my mom told me one summer that she watched me watch a television news crew from Indianapolis shoot a story at the circus building during practice one summer when I was in high school. While everyone else had some fun mugging for the camera, she said I watched every move the reporter and photographer made. A lightbulb went on for me, and I looked into where I could go to school to study broadcast journalism and what degree I could obtain,” Jackson said. While a lot of Jackson’s time is filled with work, she also has a family she loves and activities she enjoys. “In my free time, I love to be with my family and friends. As so many people have felt, it's been heartbreaking to not have the regular visits with them that I've always been used to. I also love to read, watch tv and movies, walk our dogs and travel. Which I miss.” Jackson and her husband, Scott, have been married for nearly 31 years and they have a son, Blake, who
continued from Page 2 is 24 and a 2019 graduate of Indiana University. They all have jobs in Fort Wayne and Jackson said they all “really enjoy the city.” With the recent induction into the Richard M. Fairbanks Hall of Fame, it seems fitting to take a look back on the events and people who have been a part of Jackson’s journey so far in her career. She mentioned those who have inspired her and those she admired as she grew up in Peru. When asked who she admires today, she had this to say…” The person I most admire in Peru is my younger sister, Kristi. She was born to educate and help guide young people. She's gifted at it and has a heart of gold when it comes to her students. Not to mention, she's an amazing mom!” Although her job requires hard work, long hours and much dedication, Jackson said there are aspects of her job that she enjoys. “The people I get to meet (and sometimes help through my work with non-profits) and watching college graduates who have the right attitude get their first jobs and walk in the newsroom ready to take on the world!” A college graduate ready to take on the world… sounds like a familiar story Jackson can relate to with the greatest of ease.
