2020 PHS graduate and art student, Chloey Darnell paints the “small wings” in downtown Peru.
Dan Mongosa of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, has been thinking about painting an art project in downtown Peru for nearly two years. Recently his wish grew wings and his art is now a part of the city. “It seems like every time I come home, I get to do an art project. Last time it was painting signs for the little library next to the Peru Depot,” Mongosa said. Mongosa, a 1982 graduate of Peru High School, moved to Florida when he was 21. He is an artist and photographer. He is the son of Donald and Mary Mongosa. The new art mural which consists of a large set of wings as well as small set was created by the Peru native along with the help of 2020 PHS graduate and art student, Chloey Darnell. “The Peru High School art teacher, Mike Applegate, stopped by one day to see what I was doing. He asked if I would like to have some assistance from a 2020 PHS graduate and art student. I nearly had the project
done but then thought we could do something else, too,” he said. That is when Mongosa came up with the idea of adding smaller wings to be used by children and dogs. That idea became the project for Darnell to create. The wings are a part of the “Global Wings Project” that Los Angeles artist Colette Miller originally started in 2012, "to remind humanity that we are the angels of this earth." Similar wings appeared in hundreds of places all over the world. The concept has become quite popular on social media with adults, children and their pets posing in front of the wings and becoming part of the artwork. "Peru Wings" has its own Facebook page and Instagram hashtag (#peruwings). “It’s very interactive,” Mongosa said. Mongosa was inspired to create the mural in his hometown after seeing other angel wings murals near his city in Florida. The “Peru Wings” art mural location was offered by Attorney Patrick Roberts on the Roberts Law Firm brick building, 11 S. Broadway, Peru. Mongosa hopes his new mural brings more people to downtown
Peru and continues to bring “enjoyment to counter all the despair and turmoil that has occurred in 2020,” Mongosa explained. The project was made possible by the assistance of Peru City Council member, Betsy Edwards-Wolfe and the approval of the Peru City Council. Mongosa went before the council to make a proposal for his project. Mongosa said “Betsy was really supportive about this. We’re good friends and we always discuss projects we are working on.” Mongosa said he really hopes this project will “take off ” and give “people a lift.” “I don’t always mean to leave a little piece of me behind whenever I visit home, but it just seems to happen,” Mongosa shared. Mongosa has now returned to Florida with the memories he has created with friends and family while home. He hopes the art he left behind will be something everyone can enjoy for years to come. In the meantime, the community will have to wait and see if Mongosa has another idea as to how he can bring art to life in Miami County on his next visit home.

North Miami FFA corn becoming a sweet business If you have been to Casey’s store on North Broadway, Peru, or drove through the town of Mexico, you have more than likely caught a glimpse of lots and lots of sweet corn for sale. Gavin Dyson and Trey Mettler started their sweet corn business back in 2016. The two young men started the sweet corn business to achieve their Hoosier
Degree through the FFA, both received their Hoosier Degree in the summer of 2019. One stipulation to achieve the Hoosier Degree is members of the FFA have to participate in an SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience) project. The SAE project consists of developing a business plan in an agriculture related field, detailed record keeping, finance management,
and labor management. All their profits have been going into college funds for the boys. Trey and Gavin are both attending Purdue University in the fall of 2020. Griffin Dyson will be taking over the business and the sweet corn business will be his SAE project. As long as the corn will last, they will continue to sell it in the two locations mentioned.

Mouthwatering
By Laura Kurella If there’s ever a more perfect fruit for a hot summer day its watermelon, and with National Watermelon Day right around the corner - Monday, August 3rd – I couldn’t think of a better topic to visit this week! Remembering the summer watermelons of my childhood, I can’t help but recall the big deal that my mother would make over having one in the house. However, given that she was also dealing with seven kids, her big productions
back then now make sense to me today! The first thing we kids would be asked was to clean up the entire kitchen, and make sure all clean dishes were put away. Then Mom would take the day’s newspaper and spread it out, leaf by leaf, all over the table, and then do it again so there was at least a double layer to absorb the drippings from this oh-so-juicy treat! While Mom was doing this, my sisters would often snatch pieces of the newspaper to make paper hats for us all to wear ( I think there may even be pix somewhere of this), and then after all that preparation, the star of the show would finally be placed on the table.
Watermelon!
Sharpening her favorite knife with a stone, Mom would order us all to keep our hands off the table to keep all our fingers safe, should the knife slip. Hearing the crisp crack of the melon’s rind as her knife began to pierce it, its plume of sweetness began to fill the room with its fresh aroma that couldn’t help but make us all drool. Serving us each a perfectly-sliced, triangle-shaped piece, we all giggled and cooed as we gobbled up each and every piece there was to eat! Recalling those wonderful watermelon days of the 1960s reminded me of a particular calamity that occurred one
evening when we were just starting to eat our pieces. The bug sprayer truck decided to come down our alley, which caused its plume of white bug spray fog to coming into the room! With Mom flipping into emergency mode, and quickly ordering us out of the room, she flung the windows shut, turned on her professional exhaust fan, and would let no one back into the kitchen until the room was completely cleared. To be honest , I’m not sure if we ate any watermelon that night, but knowing my mom, if we did, she would have likely made us wash it first! As refreshing today as it was when we
