Spreading cheer & helping others Honeywell Foundation, The Paper team up to help Blessings in a Backpack By Joseph Slacian jslacian@thepaperofwabash.com Since the beginning of the 2020-21 school year, officials with the Blessings in a Backpack program in Wabash has noticed an increase in the number of students served. Because of that, they began looking for various avenues to help raise funds to purchase food distributed to about 600 students weekly to make sure they have the needed nourishment for the weekend. To help that cause, the Honeywell Foundation and The Paper of Wabash County have joined forces with Blessings to offer Christmas cards featuring the artwork from area students submitted to Honeywell for its annual Christmas banner contest. A package of 14 cards and envelopes featuring the artwork will be available at The Paper’s office. The cost is $15 per package. The package features winning artwork from the various schools participating in the program. “We’ve noticed an increase need for our Blessings students,” Wabash program director Megan Henderson said. “Just with COVID and the current situation, more families are needing assistance. We were trying to brainstorm fundraising ideas, ways to raise more money so we could provide food for those extra students. “A couple of years ago, my daughter made some cards to help with a charity in Taiwan. It was successful, so I reached out to Erica Tyson at Southwood Elementary about maybe making cards to sell. She directed me to Teresa Galley with the Honeywell winter art contest.” Galley called the program “a great way to

share out the students’ amazing artwork in a meaningful way. At the Honeywell Foundation we know that the arts are essential in people’s lives. “(This year) has taken its toll on all of us in so any negative ways. If sharing the students’ art in this way lifts the spirits of our community and also benefits the children in Wabash County in an important way, we are happy to be Olivia H., Heartland Career Center, School Olivia H., Home School, 1st Grade Winner, 12th Grade, Honeywell Winter Honeywell Winter Banner Contest involved.” Banner Contest This is the first time Honeywell has helped a local non-profit with a program such as this. “We were thrilled to support such an important local organization,” Galley said. “A big part of the Honeywell Foundation Educational Outreach program involves bringing arts education residencies into the schools. We are in the classroom on many Fridays when students are receiving their Blessing bags. The children are so excited and we know the positive impact this program has for families who are food insecure.” With Honeywell on board, Henderson then reached out to The Paper owner Don Hurd about producing the cards. “When I first thought of this, I was kind of overwhelmed thinking about ordering, getting the orders, dealing with the people who paid … it was just overwhelming,” Henderson said. “I’m thankful that Don and The Paper can help us out with the ordering and taking care of all of that. “Teresa and Don got on board right away.” Hurd said, “I didn’t hesitate one second to help with the Blessings in a Backpack holiday card project. I felt it was such a great idea that The Paper needed to be a part of it. The children’s artwork is just amazing. If you need holiday Continued on Page 11

85 Hope hosts various events 85 HOPE Medical Clinic held several events in October to support women’s health in Wabash County. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the clinic hosted their annual Mammo Month where any Wabash County

woman ages 40-64 could receive an order from 85 HOPE Medical Clinic for a free mammogram at Parkview Wabash Hospital. Seventy-six women took advantage of this opportunity to be proactive about detecting breast cancer.

“85 HOPE is happy to offer free mammograms to Wabash County women through our Mammogram Fund,” said Laura Spaulding, Executive Director of 85 HOPE Medical Clinic. “It is encouraging to see so many women actively caring for their health.” Community organizations support the Mammogram Fund through their local events. Ride for a Cause held their annual ride, dinner, and auction in September and raised over $50,000, which goes to support multiple breast cancer charities. 85 HOPE’s Mammogram Fund was one of those recipients. Additionally, the Honeywell Ladies Golf Association

hosted their annual October golf scramble and raised $5,000 for 85 HOPE’s Mammogram Fund. “The generosity of our community by participating in these events was amazing, especially considering the COVID-19 situation,” said Spaulding. “Thank you sincerely to everyone involved. Your efforts and participation help make free mammograms a reality for Wabash County women.” In addition to mammograms, 85 HOPE hosted two Pap parties in October. Any Wabash County woman ages 21-64 could attend a “party” and receive a free Pap smear from a volunteer provider. This year, thirty-two women chose to prevent and detect cervi-

The next Pap party will be held in 2022. “We also want to thank the Hope Foundation for financially supporting our Pap parties and the

clinic volunteers who worked extra hours on our party nights to care for our Wabash County women,” said Spaulding. 85 HOPE Medical Clinic is a free medical clinic that provides free healthcare and medications to low-income adult residents of Wabash County who are uninsured or under-

Community Foundation receives grant The Community Foundation of Wabash County has received a $100,000 grant as part of the seventh phase of Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT VII) community foundation initiative. This unrestricted grant can be used for any charitable purposes the community foundation chooses. As part of this GIFT VII grant opportunity, each community foundation that achieved 100 percent board member giving during the period from January 1, 2019, through June 30, 2020, was eligible to receive an unrestricted grant of $100,000 per county served. This grant is in recognition of the important role that the community foundation’s board of directors plays both in leading the foundation and serving communities across Wabash County. Dave Mann, a current Community Foundation board member reflected upon receiving this award and his many years of serving on the Foundation’s board. “In 2001, I was asked to be part of the Community Foundation’s Development Committee that had recently been challenged with Lilly Endowment GIFT, Phase V, which offered all Indiana Community Foundations up to $2 million in unrestricted endowment on a matching basis,” he said. “I had some experience in fundraising, and I had made some contributions to the Community Foundation in the past, so it seemed like it would be a good fit. I was excited for what the Endowment’s matching opportunity could mean to our community. After successfully meeting GIFT V, I became an even stronger champion of “unrestricted giving” to our Community Foundation. “By serving on the

generous and continual support of the Community Foundation of Wabash County.”

Members of the Community Foundation Board of Directors are (front, from left) Dave Mann, Josh Petruniw, Susan Manwaring, Brian Howenstine (President), Brian Peas, Jim Smith; Rusty Coulter-Kern (back, from left), Lew Curless, Todd Lybarger, John Philippsen, Jim Chinworth, Mark Ford, Jim Widner. Photo provided board, I see that decisions are made on the behalf of Wabash County’s needs, and I trust future boards to make appropriate community-centered decisions. Serving many years on the Community Foundation Board and its Development Committee has allowed me to become more familiar with the work of the Foundation and its role in the community. My wife and I were also inspired to make deferred gift designations to the Foundation. Again, I appreciate more than words can express the challenges and opportunities that Lilly Endowment Inc, provides to Indiana community foundations and especially the Community Foundation of Wabash County to meet current and future needs of our community.” “On behalf of the Wabash County community, I express appreciation to the Community Foundation Board for their dedication in serving Wabash County and the Community Foundation. It is a privilege to work with such talented and thoughtful individuals who give so generously.” said Patty Grant, Executive Director of the Community Foundation. “Were it not for their deep and abiding sense of citi-

zenship, this award would not be possible; the county is blessed by their leadership and contributions.” The Community Foundation serves Wabash County through grant-making to county nonprofits, services to donors, and stewardship of over $55 million in charitable assets. The Foundation with Grow Wabash County and the County’s incorporated city and towns is leading Imagine One 85, an initiative to develop a countywide comprehensive plan to improve the quality of life in Wabash County, bring prosperity to each of the county’s communities, and grow population. The Foundation’s Board over the last decade has prioritized talent

development and educational attainment as its strategic imperative, which is addressed through grant-making related to workforce development and leadership in early childhood learning and the Early Award Scholarship Program. “I am proud to support the excellent work of the CFWC and the organization’s tireless efforts to raise the educational level of all students in the county,” says CFWC board member, Rusty Coutler-Kern. “Their work will have lasting benefits for us all, and we are fortunate to have such dedicated staff who are doing groundbreaking work on behalf of the entire community! I would like to thank Lilly Endowment for their

City Hall closure extended Mayor Scott Long announced that Wabash City Hall will remain closed to the public. In light of the continued 30 percentplus 7-day COVID-19 positivity rate, coupled with the threat of spread during the Thanksgiving family gatherings, I am continuing the closure of City Hall with employees who can work remotely doing so. City Hall will remain closed to the public indefinitely an

d remote work from home is extended until Dec. 14. A decision on any further remote work from home will be made on Dec. 11 depending on what the positivity rate for Wabash and Wabash County is at that point. “It is imperative everyone protect themselves by following the CDC Guidelines, and please by all means mask up when you have to go out into public,” Long said.

State Sen. Andy Zay (R-Huntington) gathered Tuesday, Nov. 17, with fellow legislators at the Statehouse for Organization Day — the ceremonial start of the 122nd Indiana General Assembly. Organization Day includes the swearing in of new and returning members of the General Assembly. This day also marks the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers and gives each Senate and House of Representatives caucus the opportunity to organize in preparation for the 2021 legislative session. During the first session of each General Assembly, lawmakers craft a comprehensive budget to fund government services for the next two fiscal years. Zay was also announced as the new chair of the Senate Committee on Insurance and Financial Institutions. “I am honored to be named chair of the Senate Committee on Insurance and Financial Institutions,” Zay said. “While this session may look a bit different from previous years, we will work diligently on

tackling the issues caused by the pandemic and create an honestly balanced two-year budget. I look forward to passing laws that improve the lives of Hoosiers and get Main Street moving again.” As the 2021 session begins, Zay encourages residents of Senate District 17 to contact him with any questions or comments they may have by email at Senator.Zay@iga.in .gov or by phone at 800-382-9467. Meanwhile, Craig Snow of Warsaw took the oath of office today to serve as state representative for House District 18. Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush administered the oath to all House lawmakers during a swearing-in ceremony in the House Chamber of the Statehouse during Organization Day, the formal start to the 2021 legislative session. “This is a big moment, and I’m taking some time to soak it up today with my family,” Snow said. “Then, it’s time

to roll up my sleeves and get busy representing the hardworking Hoosiers in our community. I look forward to the challenges this legislative session will bring, and want to take in as much as possible and contribute where I can.” When in middle school, Snow and his family moved to Warsaw from Missouri so his father could begin studying seminary at

Grace Theological Seminary. After graduating from Warsaw Community High School, Snow attended Grace College where he earned a bachelor’s of science in business administration. Snow joined the Silveus Organization in 2006, where he now serves as chair of the board. Constituents can contact Snow at 800382-9841 or h18@iga.in.gov.

A crew works to erect a new sign for the Town of LaFontaine. The sign is being erected by John Sutton and is still several weeks away from being finished because several pieces of engraved limestone won’t be ready until then. Photos provided

Work on new LaFontaine sign underway JANET PATTE took the pictures and talked with John Sutton who is installing and donated the new Town of LaFontaine sign. According to Janet, he showed me a diagram of what it is to look like. I tried to get a picture of the diagram but it didn’t come out. It will have a limestone above what is done now. That is being engraved with LaFontaine on it. In the indention you see will be the date, also of limestone. The engraving will then be painted black. Chuck Cable had mentioned to him it would be nice to have an Indian head on the top with Chief LaFontaine’s name there. John called me to say if anyone asks why it isn’t finished in the next 3-4 weeks, it is because the engraved pieces aren’t done yet. He wanted to get this part done while the weather was nice. He

also shared with me Chuck Cable is making signs about Mike Emerick for the three signs to add to the entry ways at Old 15, east Kendall and 218. Thank you, John Sutton, for doing this for the Town of LaFontaine and the community. Thank you, Janet, for taken pictures and talking to John Sutton. They are worship, humility, trust, and purpose. Each of these attitudes find their foundation in the Lord Jesus Christ. His person and work bring about this attitude in our hearts. This article will focus on purpose that creates a thankful heart. The psalmist in verse 8 says right up front that it is the Lord that will fulfill his purpose for me. Most people see purpose in life as something wanted and desired. This brings friction in life and disappointment

because their purpose is not fulfilled. We learn from this passage that it is the Lord that fulfills his purpose in us. When we realize that God is sovereign, we begin to accept his will and our desires for life are turned to his desires. The Lord, Yaweh, created you with a purpose in mind. Our role in this relationship is to submit to his will and become obedient in the midst of his plan for our lives. A thankful heart will find contentment and joy in walking through his plan. A selffocused person will be disappointed and not find contentment. A self-focused, proud person only looks for what they want and serves their purpose. God’s purpose for us is found in his steadfast love. God so loved us that he gave his son to pay the price of our sin debt and if we would confess and believe in Jesus Christ as our savior, we would have eternal life. That love was given while we were dead in our sins and an enemy of God. Yet he loved us and

gave his son so that we might have eternal life with him. That is God’s purpose that we be found a new creation and transformed into the very image of his son Jesus Christ. This love endures forever. Love never fails. God’s purpose is

for his creation to be made right with him. God loved us so much that he paid our penalty of sin which was death and gave us life, life eternal. This love will not fail or go away. It is our eternal hope and God’s glory. God is love.

Then the Psalmist cries out to God to not forsake. Many times, as followers of God, we feel we have failed to the point of thinking God would forsake us. We see this in the Hebrew people as they sinned Continued on Page 10

LaFontaine Lions donate dictionaries: Southwood Elementary School officials would like to think Lions members of the LaFontaine Lions club for their donation of dictionary for each one of our third-grade students! So much information packed into one book. Students were already spelling their names out in sign language for each other. The students seemed to be enjoying their dictionaries from LaFontaine Lions Club. Photos provided

Roann ...cont. from Page 9 people as they sinned and fell into servitude. Yet God’s gracious love delivered them out of the sin snare and set them free. God will not forsake his people but may allow evil to oppress us in order that we may look to him in our time of need. We also learn that God is faithful. God’s promises are true and must be trusted in. We see the goodness go to God in difficult times. We experience the power of God in trying times. We feel the comfort of God’s loving arms wrapped around us when we grieve and hurt. Allow God to fulfill his purpose in us whether good or bad, easy or difficult, clear or foggy. He is Lord of all. Pastor Rob preaches at the Roann First Brethren Church at 240 W. Allen St. Services are at 10am every Sunday. We are looking for followers of Christ to join with us. I CAN BE reached by e-mail at meyerann@centurylink.net or at the Roann United Methodist Church on Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-1 p.m.. I can also be reached via phone, 765-833-2614. NM Historical Society program looks at POW camps NORTH MANCHESTER — Do you think you know Indiana history? If you do then you probably already know about the thousands of Italian and German soldiers that lived here in the mid-1940s. It is likely that you would also know about the chapel that was built by Italian POWs for their worship services. On the off chance that you don’t already know all of this you will enjoy the North Manchester Historical Society’s newest program, “POWs at Camp Atterbury.” To view the program please use this link: https://youtu.be/EaJLhVAEXyg The November program for the North Manchester Historical Society was created by David Pfeiffer, Museum Director for the Johnson County Museum of History in Franklin, IN. Pfeiffer has worked or interned at such museums as the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, IL, the Chicago History Museum, the Indiana State Museum, and the Great Lakes Naval Museum. He has also done work with the Indiana Historical Society and the Kendall County Historical Society. The Staff at the Center for History has been working on our last event for 2020, Market @ the Museum. We have invited area artisans to sell their wares December 1-12. Booths will be spaced throughout our main floor giving plenty of area for social distancing. Masks will be required while you are in the museum. Market hours will be the same as our regular museum hours; Tue-Fri 10 am – 4 pm, Sat 10am- 2pm. This will be a great opportunity to do some local shopping while supporting area artists. During the past year and throughout 2021, the NM Historical Society will be presenting their monthly educational programs virtually. If you would like to view previous programs please visit our website, www.northmanchestercenterforhistory.org for access information. By Laura Kurella

Having had the pleasure of working in the food world for nearly two decades, I have heard more than my fair share of food stories – good, bad and ugly. Sorting through them, I have found that when it comes to leftovers, there are those who love them like crazy, and those that despise them so much that they are promptly scooted from the table to the dog dish, or the trash! Personally, I have to seem to have a foot in both camps because, while some foods do make for great leftovers, others not so much. However, when it comes to Thanksgiving, there is nary a leftover that is not suitable for a repeat performance. In fact, some turn out as good, if not better than the dish they were when they first appeared on your plate! My mom used to set aside one leg, one thigh, and both wings, which she would put inside the turkey carcass after she removed the rest of the meat. Then she would wrap the carcass up for freezing so she could pull it out in the middle of winter to whip up a warm pot of turkey soup. I can still remember how the roasted turkey skin and meat made the soup taste oh-so-good, and how tender the meat became, too. Ah, memories! Looking for recipe sources for the rest of the meat, which she usually didn’t freeze, I turned to McCormick Spice because they offer an awesome recipe database that has a wide variety of recipes that are not only beautifully eyeappealing, but also quite delicious, too! All made using leftover Thanksgiving ingredients, these redo recipes are quite crafty at concealing that they were made using left over foods. So crafty, in fact, that you just might be able to sneak them past

LAURA KURELLA someone who is a leftover poo-poo! When planning the re-use of Thanksgiving leftovers, do be sure to follow food safety guidelines, which recommend removing all meat from the turkey carcass (bones) before storing, like Mom did, and using or freezing it all within three to five days from original cook date. Here now are some oh-so-easy ways to turn those Thanksgiving leftovers into dishes so delicious they make for an outstanding encore. Enjoy! LEFTOVER TURKEY TACO CRESCENT RING PREP TIME: 25m; COOK TIME: 25m; Yield: 10 Servings. 1 package McCormick® Taco Seasoning Mix, divided use 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup finely chopped onion 2 cups shredded cooked turkey 15 1/4 ounces whole kernel corn, drained 10 ounces diced tomatoes and chiles, drained 1 garlic clove, minced 8 ounces whipped cream cheese 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese, divided use 16 ounces refrigerated crescent dinner rolls Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Reserve 1 teaspoon Seasoning Mix in small bowl; set aside. Melt butter in medium saucepan on medium heat. Add onion; cook and stir 3 minutes or until tender. Add turkey, corn, tomatoes, garlic and remaining Seasoning Mix. Cook and stir 5

minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in cream cheese and 1 cup of the shredded cheese. Unroll each crescent roll dough on greased or parchment paper-lined baking pan. Separate into triangles. Arrange triangles to resemble the sun, with the center open. Press the dough where the bottoms of the triangles overlap. Spoon turkey mixture in a ring where the dough overlaps. Fold triangle points over filling, tucking into bottom layer to secure. Continue until entire ring is enclosed. Bake 15 minutes or until golden brown. Meanwhile, stir remaining 1 cup shredded cheese into reserved Seasoning Mix in bowl. Remove ring from oven. Sprinkle with cheese mixture. Bake 5 minutes longer or until cheese melts. Serve with desired toppings. ULTIMATE LEFTOVER TURKEY PANINI PREP TIME: 15m; COOK TIME: 16m; Yield: 4 Servings. 1/2 cup cranberry sauce 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1/2 teaspoon McCormick® Ginger, Ground 2 tablespoons butter, melted 8 slices pumpernickel bread 1-pound sliced roast turkey 1 cup baby arugula leaves 4 slices sharp Cheddar cheese Mix cranberry sauce, mayonnaise, and ginger in small bowl. Set aside. Spread butter on 1 side of each slice of bread. Place 4 of the bread slices, butteredside down, on cutting board. Top with turkey, cranberry spread, arugula leaves and cheese. Cover each with second slice of bread, buttered-side up. Heat large skillet on medium heat. Place 2 of the sandwiches in skillet.
