By Michelle Boswell mboswell@thepaperofmiami.com Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch announced the three cities in Indiana who were the recipients of the Preserving Women’s Legacy Grant. Miami County was one of those cities. Michigan City and Angola were the other awardees of the grant. ReDiscover Downtown Peru and Miami County Worth Remembering teamed up to apply for the grant. Although the grant can only be awarded to a Main Street organization like ReDiscover Downtown Peru, Miami County Worth Remembering has been a driving force to see this project through. Regine Brindle, member of Miami County Worth Remembering said “I think it’s amazing! I didn’t think we would get it because it’s so competitive. It was a lot of work trying to gather all the information and we had a lot of good help from a lot of people. It’s very rewarding. Now that we have it,

we really get to work,” said Brindle. Brindle has been doing research about Miami County women and how their efforts helped women win the right to vote. The funding award is $35,000 and the two groups will be raising additional funds over the next 12 months to design and maintain the Miami County Woman’s Suffrage Trail. The trail will have 10 different stops along the way, highlighting women who were influential in Miami County. The stops are: The Peru Public Library, 102 E Main Street; Home Cottage, 20 E Fifth Street; Anglican Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity, 34 W Main Street; The Grey House, 50 N Hood Street; ReDiscover Downtown Peru (RDP) – Main Street District, 52 North Broadway; Miami County Museum, 51 North Broadway; Peru Republican Newspaper (The County Employee Parking Lot), 25 Court Street; Miami County Courthouse (Red Cross/Council of Defense), 25 North Broadway; Peru Civic Center, 225 E Riverside Drive and The Old Chamber of Commerce (across from City Hall) 35 S Broadway.

Proudly Serving Miami County

After being announced as one of three recipients of the Perserving Women’s Legacy Grant, Rediscover Dowtown Peru and Miami County Worth Remembering were voted down concerning their offer to erect a statue on the Peru Public Library property. The bronze statue would be of Marie Stuart Edwards, President of Women’s Franchise League of Indiana, 1917. It would be of Edwards as a young teenager standing next to her bicycle. The groups had hoped the library would allow the statue to be on that particular property because Edwards had meetings at the library and formed the Peru League of Women Voters Dec. 15, 1920, at the Peru Public Library. Regine Brindle, member of Miami County Worth Remembering, gave the presentation to the board concerning the importance of Edwards in Miami County and how the library played a significant role in the meetings that propelled women’s right to vote. Once Brindle finished the presentation, board president Alison Paul called for 15 minutes of discussion concerning the possibility of erecting the statue on the library property. Once the time elapsed, the call for the vote came. Those in favor of erecting the statue were Deborah Swihart, Alison Paul and Regine Brindle. Those who opposed were Melissa Duckwall, Bryan Maggart and Leslie Murphy. Board member Austina Reed, who was not physically present but was on speaker phone throughout the meeting, abstained from voting because she was involved with the grant-writing process. Reed informed the board she was not paid for her grant-writing services. Since the vote was tied, the motion was defeated. The money awarded through the grant was to be used toward the creation of the statue and the woman’s suffrage trail in Miami County.

Grant Brenda Weaver, another member of Miami County Worth Remembering said, “My head is still spinning. It really is. Never in my life did I imagine we would be able to honor women like this. It almost brings me to tears.” It’s a little bit odd that I’m going to be the first woman to be commissioner in the county’s history. To me that’s amazing that it happens right on the 100th anniversary. Mayor Miles Hewitt echoed the enthusiasm felt by Brindle and Weaver. “I’m very happy to be a part of this. Giving a proclamation this morning…no contest whatsoever. It’s something I’m very proud to be a part of,” Mayor Hewitt said. Alan Hunt, Miami County Commissioner shared his delight with the grant award. “I’m very happy these two ladies worked so hard to obtain this grant and it’s very valuable to Miami County. It’s a large grant. We’re one of the very few counties to receive this grant. I want to congratulate Brenda and Regine for working so hard to get this grant,” he said. Along with the trail, the organizations plan to have a bronze statue made of Marie Stuart Edwards, President of the Women’s Franchise League of Indiana in 1917 and much more. The statue will not be of Edwards as an adult. “We’re not going to look at her as a tall, 6-foot woman but as that 12-year-old girl who has all that future ahead of her and all that potential. We really would like for the young women of today to see what

continued from Page 1

Marie Stuart Edwards can happen,” said Brindle. Brindle said they are meeting with a foundry near Indianapolis to see what kind of design they

can come up with for the statue. “We are going to look for who can do Marie the best,”Brindle said.

Peru Mayor Miles Hewitt made a proclamation Aug. 26, 2020, recognizing the commemoration of August 26, 1920, the day on which women won the right to vote. The proclamation was declared Women’s Equality Day. The following is the proclamation that was read at City Hall. “PROCLAMATION-Office of the Mayor. Whereas, on Women’s Equality Day we commemorate the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which secured for women the right to vote. The anniversary of this milestone is an appropriate time to reflect on the remarkable accomplishments of women in every facet of American life. It is also an opportunity to honor women for their leadership in service to their families, their communities, and the Nation; and Whereas, in the same spirit of the 19th Amendment we must continue to see an environment of opportunity for all women. Today we celebrate the passion and unwavering dedication of the women who struggled and persevered in the fight for suffrage, and we recognize the countless ways that women strengthen the fabric of the Nation. We all benefit from the leadership and ingenuity of women in education, medicine, government, law, business, military service, and every other field contributing to the greatness of this Nation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, I, Miles Hewitt, Mayor of the City of Peru, do hereby recognize the commemoration of “August 26, 1920” as the day 100 years ago on which the women of America won their right to vote, and recognize this milestone as an opportunity to continue to work for equal rights for all citizens.”
