Getting the most out of garden, indoor plants By Rosie Lerner, Department of Horticulture and Landscape Purdue University Extension Planting vegetable seeds or transplants at the correct time is important for a successful garden. The correct timing is determined by two factors: the soil temperature required for seeds to germinate and the temperature tolerance of the plants. The best planting dates can vary from season to season. Planting dates also differ from one location to another based on the microclimatic effects of urban areas, natural terrain, moisture, sunlight, wind exposure, and garden devices such as cloches and mulches. Because of this variation, we can only suggest a range of safe planting dates based on statistical dates of the last frost in the spring (Figure 1) and the first frost in the fall (Figure 2). You should note the current weather conditions and projections as well as your site’s conditions to determine the correct planting date for a specific crop and variety. Making several plantings within these date ranges can increase the likelihood of success. Several plantings will also extend the harvest season over a longer period. If you make only one planting, then make it about midway through the range. Table 1 indicates spring planting dates, while Table 2 suggests appropriate dates for fall garden planting. Many summer vegetable crops do not grow well until soil temperatures are warm. In years when cool air temperatures and rainfall do not allow the soil to warm up, delay planting warm season crops such as beans, tomatoes, squash, sweet potatoes, and sweet corn until the soil temperature has reached at least 60ºF for optimum germination and/or growth. Otherwise, seed and root rot disease and related disorders are likely. For more experienced gardeners, soil temperature measurements offer an alternative to planting according to frost dates. Soil can be warmed early by using black or clear plastic mulches. Seeds that require warm temperatures for germination can then be planted successfully before the recommended dates. However, protection against late frosts for the seedlings may be required. Table 3 provides seed germination temperatures for several vegetables.
See Tables 1, 2, and 3 on Page 2
Vol. 2, No. 11
Planning and planting on a schedule can make a difference in the outcome of your harvest.
When deciding fall planting dates, be sure to consider the days to maturity for your crop. If planting after September 1, expect a longer time to maturity the later you plant. Choose faster maturing cultivars when possible. Also note that soil can be too dry in late summer for optimum germination. Be prepared to irrigate frequently until crop is established.

slow down moisture loss. Now is a good time to take cuttings of houseplants to increase a collection or share with friends. Stick cuttings to root in media, such as vermiculite, perlite, or potting soil. Roots grown in water tend to be weak from lack of oxygen and do not adjust well to planting in soil. Fertilize houseplants according to label directions. Foliage plants require relatively high nitrogen fertilizer;

flowering houseplants respond best to fertilizer high in phosphorus. Yard (Lawns, woody ornamentals, and fruits) Prune early spring-flowering trees and shrubs after flowers fade. Plant balled-andburlapped or container nursery stock, and water thoroughly. Remove and destroy overwintering bagworms from landscape trees and shrubs. Follow a spray schedule to keep
home-orchard crops pest free. While trees are in bloom, use fungicide sprays without insecticide to avoid injuring bees. Follow label directions. More information is available in “Managing Pests in Home Fruit Plantings” (Purdue Extension publication ID-146-W). Thin apple tree fruits, if needed, about three weeks after petal fall. Apples should be about 8 inches apart. Mother Nature may have
taken care of thinning fruit set this year. Apply fungicides to roses to control diseases such as black spot. Purdue turf experts recommend that if you are going to fertilize your lawn in May, apply 3/4-1 pound of nitrogen (N) per 1,000 square feet with a product that contains 50 percent or more of slow-release fertilizer. Try to schedule the application prior to a rain or irrigate following application
An old truck bed made into a trailer was taken from a property at 1765 W Logansport Road, Countrymark Coop, Peru sometime in the last three weeks. A case report was completed. Later, Bowman’s recovery returned a phone call stating they had a trailer matching the stolen trailer description. The victim identified the trailer as the stolen item and was forwarded to Bowman’s to arrange a pick-up meeting. A complainant at 204 W Broadway St, Apt. 4, Bunker Hill reported some of his items were stolen from his
home about three months ago. A complainant at 2051 W Matador St, Country Cottage Apartments, Peru reported his vehicle was damaged when kicked by a juvenile. A case report was completed.

to move the fertilizer off leaf blades. Garden (Flowers, vegetables, and small fruits) Plant frost-tender plants after the danger of frost has passed for your area. This includes warm-season vegetables (such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and vine crops) as well as most annual flowers and tender perennials (such as cannas, gladiolus, dahlias, tuberous begonias, and caladiums). Pinch chrysanthemums and annual
flower plants to keep them compact and well-branched. Make successive plantings of beans and sweet corn to extend the harvest season. Thin seedlings of early-planted crops such as carrots, lettuce, spinach, and beets to their proper spacing. Harvest early plantings of radishes, spinach, and lettuce. Both asparagus and rhubarb season may be delayed this year due to the slow progression of
spring. Harvest asparagus by cutting or snapping spears at or just below soil level. Harvest rhubarb by cutting or grasping the stalk and pulling it up and slightly to one side. Control cucumber beetles (which are carriers of bacterial wilt) as soon as cucumber plants germinate or are transplanted to prevent disease. Remove blossoms from newly set strawberry plants to allow better runner formation.

Obituaries Lynne Ann Copeland, 69 Lynne Ann Copeland was a caring mother, sister, daughter, and aunt. She passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at Parkview Hospital Randallia, at the age of 69. Her battle with serious medical issues in recent years showed her courage in facing all challenges with determination and perseverance. Despite the pain, she stayed strong through the end. Lynne was born to William and Betty Copeland on May 28, 1951, in Peru, Indiana. She met her husband, Ben, in high school; they married in 1969 when she graduated from Peru High School. Together, they had two children: Michael and Carol. Lynne, nicknamed "The Organizer," was notorious for making sure everything and everyone was in the
right place at the right time and in the right order. Her family was extremely important to her and she was always taking care of everyone. Lynne's favorite activities revolved around the water: fishing, swimming, boating. She instilled the love of an early morning fishing expedition in her kids and those memories will never fade. She was a lifelong beautician and a member of the Eastern Star. Lynne was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her children, Michael Milton and Carol Milton, both of Indianapolis; sister Suzy Dresser of New Haven, brother William (Carol) Copeland of Scottville, Michigan; nieces Rachel and Leah Dresser, nephew Jimmy (Danielle) Dresser, and grandnephew Jalen Thompson. Ardys Reed, 95 Mrs. Ardys Reed, 95, was born May 28, 1925, and died Thursday, April 29, 2021. She led the quintessential military lifestyle until her pilot husband retired near Mexico, Indiana in 1969. Ardys was born in Lafayette, Indiana. After graduating from Brookston High School as valedictorian, she was working for the post office when she met the love of her life. Though she was quite prim and proper, she was "chaperoning" a girl friend from her hometown on a road trip to Denver, Colorado, where on a blind date she was introduced to a serviceman from Wyoming. He was so smitten that he proposed to her on top of Pike's Peak. She wisely responded, “not until you come to Indiana and meet my parents!” Ardys married Thomas B. Reed on April 16, 1949. Her USAF Lt Col husband preceded her in death in 1990. As her husband kept volunteering for the next faster airplane to fly, there were frequent transfers, and
she birthed four sons in four different states. They all were blessed to come to her bedside at Dukes Hospital with their wives and talk to their mother before she passed. Ardys was born to Morrison Dale and Cecile Moore Charles, both from Indiana. Surviving are her four sons: Keven C. Reed (Kiyoko), Fleming Island Florida; Allan T. Reed (Deborah), Danville Indiana; Brian B. Reed (Rhonda), Macy Indiana; and Robin R. Reed (Diann), Mt. Crawford Virginia; along with twelve grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. Her sons are forever grateful to a parent who taught them good manners and made sure
they completed their homework assignments diligently and on time. She was a woman of strong faith, a member of several social and charitable organizations, and a volunteer with a local literacy program. When her husband retired from the military, they settled into the farming community of Miami County, Indiana. They were steadfast supporters of the Methodist Church in Mexico. Funeral services were held at Noon, Saturday, May 1, 2021, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery, Mexico, Indiana, alongside her husband and his parents. Visitation was from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greenlawn Cemetery Association. McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana, has been entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be sent online at www.mcclainfh.com.

Linda more meaningful." Sheldon Harnick “It has been a blessing to work with the Love, Linda crew. It’s not everyday that a small Midwestern town like Peru, Indiana can pull off adding a Broadway event of this magnitude in Cole Porter’s birthplace, for Cole Porter’s birthday, for Cole Porter Festival goers. It’s like win-

I thank Stevie Holland and Lyle Saunders (Producer) for working with the festival, and my executive committee, Vicki Draper and Ellen Mock, for encouraging me to pursue the event after presenting the
