Future teachers receive Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship STATEHOUSE – Local students preparing to become teachers are among this year's recipients of the state's Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, according to State Rep. Ethan Manning (R-Logansport). The scholarship program, established in 2016 through legislation enacted by the Indiana General Assembly, awards $7,500 annually to 200 high-achieving students who commit to teaching in the state for at least 5 years after graduating college. "The students selected for this scholarship have demonstrated the academic drive it takes to become an educator," Manning said. "I wish these future teachers continued success as they prepare to launch their careers in a Hoosier
classroom." More than 400 students applied, and these local students are among this year's 200 scholarship recipients: Rachel Gunion, Maconaquah High School; Lydia Jones, Maconaquah High School; and James Walsh, Peru High School. Those qualifying for the renewable scholarship totaling up to $30,000 must graduate in the highest 20 percent of their high school class or earn a score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT. Police Reports
June 3 A traffic accident with injuries was reported at S U.S. 31 and W 850 S, Bunker Hill. A complainant stated her 5 year old daughter was allowed to stay with her father for the weekend at 671 S Clinton St, Bunker Hill. The father was then refusing to return the daughter, and the complainant said the father was not on the birth certificate, had no paternity established, and no custody order existed. Officers located the child at the father’s residence and spoke with the father. The father stated the daughter came to him with a bruise, which he reported to DCS in Fort Wayne (where the mother lives). The

father added DCS told him he could return the child at his discretion. Officers then spoke with Lisa of Allen County DCS. She confirmed the case involving a child, and a safety plan was in place which did not interfere with the mother’s custody. Lisa added she did tell the father to return the child at his discretion, but she was not aware the mother had requested the child’s return at
that time. Lisa stated the child needed to be returned to the mother if she was requesting the child. Ofiicers then recontacted the father and clarified Lisa’s statement to him, He stated he would see that the child was returned to mother as soon as that evening. Officers then returned to the mother and she said she needed nothing else from the officers at the time.
