State of disaster declared in Wabash County, 28 others, after Ion National Guard deployed throughout Indiana to assist in life saving and rescue operations
by Eric Stearley eric@thepaperofwabash.com Shortly after 4 p.m. Monday, Governor Mike Pence declared a state of disaster emergency for 29 of Indiana’s 92 counties, including Wabash County, after Winter Storm Ion dropped more than a foot of snow on most of the state and temperatures dropped well below zero. The declaration came after the governor ordered the National Guard to activate highway assistance teams the day before. “As a result of the severe snowstorms, extreme cold and dangerous wind conditions that have impacted counties across Indiana, I have declared a state of disaster emergency in the 29 counties that were most affected by the storm, and the state of Indiana stands ready to assist Hoosiers as needed,” Governor Pence stated. “We will continue to respond to this serious winter storm and evaluate its impact on other Indiana counties going forward.” The harsh winter weather came as predicted Sunday, blanketing most of the Midwest in an almost unmanageable 15 inches of snow and delaying printing and delivery of The Paper until later in the week. With all local schools closed through Wednesday, and government offices and most businesses closed Monday and Tuesday, the mercury drop kept snow lovers inside during what might otherwise have been the best sledding opportunity of the year. A record low temperature of -14 degrees as recorded at the Peru weather post, with wind speeds exceeding 30 mph, kept all but the bravest inside and caused significant drifting, which added to the difficulty that crews had in clearing roads. Wind chill was estimated near -40 degrees. The National Weather Service in northern Indiana declared a blizzard warning Sunday evening in effect until 7 a.m. Monday morning. The travel warning issued for Wabash County by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security remained in place through Tuesday. The highest level of travel advisory, the warning restricted travel to emergency workers only, directing others to refrain from all travel. The City of Wabash’s travel status was lowered to a watch Tuesday afternoon, while the county retained its warning. The snow and extreme cold caused widespread power outages in several parts of Indiana, (namely Fishers, Martinsville, and Terre Haute) affecting more than 50,000 homes. As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, 3,100 homes serviced by Duke Energy were still without power. Humvees were deployed to rescue those

A press release from the power supply company estimated that most of the outages would be resolved by Tuesday evening. The harsh winter weather has resulted in numerous automobile accidents, several of which included semi trucks. Interstates 65, 70, and 94 were each closed for a period of time. I-65 was closed a second time Tuesday morning as a result of multiple jackknifed semi trucks near the 76-mile marker, according to a press release from the Indiana State Police. The arctic temperatures motivated many to light the fireplace for extra warmth, but it is important to be sure that a fireplace is safe before sparking a match. The Wabash Fire Department responded to a chimney fire at 850 McKibben Street around 1:15 pm Monday. Firefighters extinguished the fire in Monday’s subzero temperatures. Indiana State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson urged citizens to clear snow from fire hydrants in a Tuesday press release. “As you’re clearing your driveway and

sidewalks, it’s always appreciated when fire hydrants are kept clear of snow,” said Greeson. “It saves a lot of time when it comes to locating and using a fire hydrant in time of a fire. A fire hydrant blocked or covered by snow can result in
time lost fighting fire and dire consequences to a homeowner or business owner.” Greeson also urges those working to remove snow to take frequent breaks and (continued on page 4)

www.thepaperofwabash.com
January 8, 2014
by Emily Armentrout emily@thepaperofwabash.com January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and two local organizations, 85 Hope and the Hope Foundation, are joining together to promote cervical cancer awareness and serve the women of Wabash County. 85 Hope is a free medical clinic in Wabash County that provides care for the uninsured. Their mission statement explains: “85 Hope is inspired by the Gospel to provide free primary healthcare services to uninsured, low-income residents of Wabash County.” The Hope Foundation was created to “supplement the cost of certain patient expenses, defray the cost of medical education through the Tumor Board, and pay a portion of the oncology
nursing education for OCN certification,” according to the Hope Foundation brochure. 85 Hope opened their doors on Dec. 1, 2011 at Wabash Friends Church. They provide 40-50 office visits per month, along with free medication, lab and x-ray services. The organization, led by Executive Director Laura Helm, is staffed by volunteer doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses and allied health staff. It has received grants and donations from the United Fund, Community Foundation, Lutheran Foundation, Ford Meter Box Foundation, Chili for Charity, First United Methodist Church, private donors and numerous other churches and services organizations. “Friends Church has provided clinic space, and Wabash County Hospital has provided
valuable administrative support,” Dr. Rose Wenrich told The Paper. The Hope Foundation began in 1985 and was founded by the late Dr. Robert LaSalle. The Hope Foundation is “a nonprofit foundation with a mission to provide assistance to cancer patients in Wabash County and offer cancer screening events for those underserved and without financial means,” according to Amy Poole, member of the Hope Foundation’s board of directors. “Dr. LaSalle and the other board members had an initial vision to improve access to cancer care and screenings in Wabash County. Today that vision is alive and working well,” Amy Poole, RN, OCB, and Director of Nursing told The Paper. The Hope Foundation holds a Cancer Survivors Day and annual cancer
screenings, which is why the foundation decided to join with 85 Hope for their upcoming film festival to raise funds for their cervical cancer screenings. 85 Hope and the Hope Foundation will be holding a screening of the film “Escape Fire: The Fight to Save American Healthcare” on Jan. 15 at the Eagles Theatre. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will start at 7 p.m. The film reviews healthcare in America and the need to find a way to fix a broken system. There will be a panel discussion of topics covered in the movie to follow. The community can ask questions of doctors and nurses who will be on hand. There is no cost for the event. Donations will be accepted at the door and will help fund a free cervical cancer screening program for uninsured women in
Wabash County. The cervical cancer screenings will be held on Jan. 21 from 6-8 p.m. at Family Physicians, located on Manchester Ave. This is a free event to provide Pap smears to women age 21-64, in Wabash County. No preregistration is required. 85 Hope and the Hope Foundation are holding these screenings for any women in Wabash County who need a Pap smear. You do not need to have a family doctor or insurance. There will be no cost to the patient.
The testing will be performed by doctors and nurses who are volunteering their time to serve the women of
Wabash County, who otherwise could not have this test done. For more information, contact 85 Hope at 260-330-9877.

Squires knock off Huntington North by Gary Andrews After a disappointing weekend at the Wabash County basketball tourney, the Manchester Squires basketball team went on the road one week later and made some serious noise. The Squires paid a visit to Huntington Saturday and with 8 of the 9 players who saw the floor scoring, knocked off the Vikings 66-60. A strong defensive first half by the Squires was key in the win, as Manchester’s balanced attack took advantage. The Squires held Huntington to just 4 points in the first quarter while they built a 6point lead. Manchester got buckets from Chase Fierstos and Lucas Schilling, while Clayton Petrie knocked home a three pointer and three free throws to lead 10-4 after one. Knowing the Vikings could strike at any time, the Squires offense was up for the task. Manchester would win the quarter 16-14, hitting five buckets three which were from behind the arch. Chase Fierstos, Clayton Petrie and Micah McDaniel would all find the range behind the arch, while Phoenix Goad and Fierstos would hit two pointers. Fierstos would lead the Squire charge in the quarter with 6 points as Manchester led 26-18 at the half.
Huntington had shut down Squire sharp shooter Claudell Dickantone the entire first half, but the Squires made some halftime adjustments and Dickantone went off in the third. Manchester would feed Dickantone, who cashed in four times in the quarter, which included two buckets from behind the arch for 10 points. Clayton Petrie would drain his third three pointer of the game as Manchester won the quarter 15-12 and led 4130 with one quarter to go. The fourth quarter would be at a racehorse pace and get very physical as the Vikings were forced to foul to play catch up. Huntington put the Squires on the line 9 times in the quarter with the Squires going 12 of 17 from the charity stripe. Huntington would knock down 4 buckets from behind the arch in their catch-up attempt, out scoring Manchester
30-25, but the Squire lead was to much as Manchester knocked off Huntington 66-60. Eight players got in to the scoring column for the Squires, led by Clayton Petrie with 19 points. Chase Fierstos added 17, Claudell Dickantone 14, Phoenix Goad 5, Braydon Sewell 3, Branden Scott 3, Micah McDaniel 3, Lucas Schilling 2.
“All nine players had significant contributions during big minutes. It was a total team effort on both sides of the ball much improved from a week ago. I’m very proud of the effort to improve everyday,” said Coach Thompson of his team. The junior varsity fell to Huntington 44-23.

A SNOWY OWL sits on the roof of Miller’s Merry Manor just off Highway 24, making it one of few Wabash County residents that is used to the abnormally cold temperatures experienced by the area. The owl has been seen repeatedly in the area, typically between the highway and Division Road. According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, “snowy owls can be found moving into Michigan during winter when the food supply on the arctic tundra is in short supply.
