Local student flees from Africa to live the ‘American Dream’ by Emily Armentrout As part of the Ivy Tech Community College graduating class of 2013, Atchima Mhtzene, a North Manchester resident, might not stick out as anything out of the ordinary; however, her journey to graduation is what has differed from that of her peers. Mhtzene was born in Chad, Africa, a French colonized nation where approximately half the nation is Christian and the other half is Muslim. There are 120 to 130 different ethnic languages spoken in Chad, according to Mhtzene, who is fluent in at least five different languages. While in Chad, Mhtzene attended school from kindergarten to 11th grade. As is often practiced in Chad, Mhtzene was kidnapped as part of an arranged marriage, which transpired after completing the 11th grade. “I’ve seen tons of my friends getting married and it wasn’t the life I saw for myself,” Mhtzene said. “They all thought I was crazy, but I wanted to go to school. That life didn’t click for me.” Mhtzene’s parents had divorced when she was 8-years-old, thus her aunt had become the driving force
behind her continuing school. “My dad always felt like, at the end of the day, I was getting married, so why did I need to go to school,” Mhtzene said. “My aunt made sure I went and that I kept my grades up.” After she was kidnapped, she was taken to her husband’s home and secluded from the outside world, except from her new husband and a woman who would bring her food daily. “In the beginning, I fought back, but then I realized that if I cooled off and pretended to accept this, they would be more trusting of me,” Mhtzene said. “One day, they finally let me be alone and I snuck out into the courtyard and ran like crazy until I came to a road where I got onto a bus. I couldn’t go home, and my mother lived 1,000 kilometers away, so I went to my aunt’s, where I hid in a back room.” Eventually, she was sent to live with her aunt’s friend as that location would most likely provide a safer location to hide. While living there, she hid in a closet, for almost five months. “Every single day, every single hour, every single time someone made a noise, I felt like someone

It was constant fear, all of the time.” Mhtzene explained. According Mhtzene, if you were found, the husband and his family would typically beat you and force you back into your arranged marriage. Eventually, her aunt found help from her boss who worked for the government and agreed to help get Mhtzene out of the country. He helped her escape to New York, where she stayed with a family before she found an organization that specialized in helping people like

Mhtzene. After a year and a half of legal processes, Mhtzene moved to North Manchester to live with a friend and enrolled in Manchester High School. After graduating from high school, Mhtzene heard about an accelerated program called ASAP offered at Ivy Tech Community College that allows students to obtain an associate’s degree in one year. To complete her degree in the shortened timeframe, Mhtzene started classes at 6:45 a.m. and did not get home until 6 p.m. On May 10, Mhtzene graduated with an associate’s degree in business administration. Mhtzene was also nominated by her respective academic department as the recipient of the Melvin Curtis Award for Academic Excellence, which is an honor bestowed to one student in each program who exemplifies academic excellence. “I thought there was no way I would get this award. When she called my name, I couldn’t say anything. I was a mess,” Mhtzene told The Paper. Mhtzene made, what she described as one of the toughest decisions of her life in choosing to continue her education by attending Manchester University. After winning the Melvin Curtis Award, Mhtzene said she had offers from colleges all over the country, which would accept at least 60 of her 65 credits. Manchester University will only accept 37 of her credits, but she says she loves it here too much to leave.
“There is a sense of community. It’s just like you fit. It’s not like New York City, where no one notices you,” Mhtzene said. “Here, it’s like ‘Hey Mhtzene, how are you?’ People just know who you are. I love it so much here, even if I do go to law school, I hope I can come back,” said Mhtzene of her love of Manchester. Mhtzene has set her 2013 goal to help as many high school students as she can get into college. “I feel like there is a tremendous amount of students that are in high school or that are staying home for a year that want to go to college, but they don’t know where to start,” Mhtzene said. “It can be overwhelming; I was there last year. Even though it feels that way, if you just keep pushing yourself, I feel like you can do it.” She has had the chance to sit down with a dozen students and talk to them about college and their future, but she would like to get out and talk to more students. She doesn’t want to be a spokesperson for a certain college, but more like a “big sister.” Mhtzene has applied for an internship at the Community Center in Wabash so that she can have those opportunities to help and share with students. “If you find the thing you love, just make it happen. Don’t back down, don’t give up. The life that was picked for me wasn’t the life I wanted for myself. The American dream, for me, is just to make it happen,” added Mhtzene.

Aquaponic, organic greenhouse open in Peru by Kerri Boggs Green River Greenhouse, located at 1140 W 300 N, Peru, is owned by Cory Rairigh and Noble Gilbreath. They started building May 9, 2012. The greenhouse uses aquaponics to grow their produce and raise their fish.
Aquaponics is a mix between aquaculture and hydroponics. They have two tanks that, combined, can hold up to 30,000 fish. Each tank currently holds around 7,500 tilapia. Green River Greenhouse uses the water from the fish

tanks to provide nutrients to the plants. The water is then recycled back into the fish tanks and the process repeats. Green River Greenhouse is located on over 47 acres of previously wooded land. It has been untouched by chemicals and pesticides. The land is a work in progress. Rairigh wants to landscape and get their fruit trees planted. Rairigh is the designer of the greenhouse. It is its own complete eco system, with two beehives, ladybugs, tree frogs and geckos. “The greenhouse can grow 10 times as much as it would if it were regular farm ground in the same space. The greenhouse uses one tenth of the water a normal greenhouse would use,” said Rairigh. There are two wood burners for heat in the winter. They can produce all year round.
They hope to cater to local restaurants and local markets. The greenhouse will have roadside stands set up in the near future. Boondocks in Peru was one of their first customers. They serve their certified, organic lettuce in special salads. Green River Greenhouse will offer different types of tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and peppers, all grown indoors and certified organic. Along with fresh herbs including basil, cilantro and dill, all grown chemical and pesticide free. Green River Greenhouse sells their farm raised tilapia live and unprocessed. Rairigh said eventually they want to be able to have a place to process and sell their fish. In addition to the indoor greenhouse, they have also planted sweet corn, zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, onions and car-
rots outside and it is also grown organically and chemical free. The greenhouse also planted over 150 bush-
es of berries and has fruit trees, in hopes of one day having a nature walk available for families to pick
their own fresh fruit. For ordering information and availability, please call Cory at 765-475-3435.

Laura Gentis, regional vice president financial services for Farm Credit. “We opened our existing office in 1979. At that time the Marion team consisted of four employees servicing $30 million in loan volume - today, we have nine team members servicing $150 million in volume. We are looking forward to continuing to build on the roots we have here in Marion.” The Marion office will continue to serve customers in Blackford, Grant, Huntington and Wabash counties. THE ROANN COVERED BRIDGE Lions Club met on June 6 at the town hall. The meeting was opened by the pledge of allegiance to the American flag led by club President Keith Ford. The club welcomed Harold and Bonnie Corn and Richard Morris as guests who will officially become members of the Roann Lions Club after their applications are processed. In old business, Russell Krom reported that the bleachers from the tractor-pulling field are in the process of being repaired at a cost of $500. Information about the cost of new bleachers was shared with the club that may be considered in the future when there is a need. Russell also presented a list of all the tractor pulls that are scheduled for the summer and festival time. Russell requested some help for painting trim on door, and cleaning of the restroom at the pull field. The date was set for Tuesday, June 11. Don Everest showed a decal that had been made by Goose Graphics for the plastic blue trash barrels that are used during the festival. A motion was made and seconded to purchase 40 decals, which would be one per barrel and leave a few extra decals. The 2013 Lions Club Community calendars are here and
most have been delivered. We will have a few calendars left over to sell. You may contact Donna Harman at 765-8335663. Norse repeat bid falls short
by Gary Andrews Most teams never make it to the state championship. The Northfield baseball team was one win away Saturday, June 15, from a shot at winning back-to-back state championships. The 2012 state champions were taking on South Spencer, who was the 2011 state champs. Without the services of first baseman Joseph Ross, who reported to the Army after the semistate, plus knowing it would be the last game Norse coach Tony Uggen would coach at Northfield after announcing he was taking the athletic director and baseball job at Blackford, one would wonder what the effects would be. The usual hard hitting Norse would collect just four hits in the game, while starting pitcher Ryan Keaffaber would struggle as South Spencer pulled off the upset in a 3-2 win over Northfield for the state title. Northfield was the home team and after two strike outs, Keaffaber would give up a single and a walk before his third strikeout to get out of the inning. The Norse went three up and three down to head to the second with the game scoreless. The second inning got started with second baseman Collin Dawes making a great diving catch behind second base before South Spencer would strike. A one out triple and a two out single put the Rebels up 1-0 with the Norse coming to the plate. Andy Roser would start the bottom of the inning with a
triple, then score on a passed ball to knot the score at one, before three straight outs would end the inning. Keaffaber would walk two in the third and give up a single and a walk in the fourth, managing to get out of both innings without giving up a run. Unfortunately the Norse would not put a runner on in those two innings as the game headed to the fifth still tied at one. South Spencer would make some noise in the fifth. After a walk and two bunt singles loaded the bases with no outs, Keaffaber would bare down to strike out the next two before a seeing eye bloop single over Andy Roser at third would score two runs to give the Rebels a 3-1 lead. The Norse would try to answer in the bottom of the inning. Bryce Kendall got things going with a single and was followed by Shane Vigar going up the middle, but an outstanding diving play by the shortstop got the force at second. After another force at second made it two outs, freshman Drake Richter would draw a walk, with pinch runner Austin Curless at second. On a delayed appeal play on a swing, Curless was caught off guard at second being picked off to end the inning. Keaffaber would strike out three in the sixth and hold South Spencer in the seventh to give the cardiac kids one more shot. Ryan Keaffaber would lead off, reaching on a Rebel error and was advanced to third on an Andy Roser single. After a

Besides local travel some of the specific things Luke hopes to do while in South Africa are to go on a safari, hike to a spot called God’s Window, travel along the Garden Route, and climb to the top of Table Mountain. Luke’s plan after graduation from Indiana University is to go on to graduate school and get a degree in IndustrialOrganizational Psychology. This degree would prepare him to be a consultant for businesses that would like to improve the productivity of their employees by increasing their overall well-being and satisfaction by improving the work place environment. He would also look at increasing communication and understanding between employees and management, and streamlining management structures to make a company more efficient. patterns and pictures look as though they are actually painted on the object. Decoupage is a fun and easy way to decorate just about any object, including household items from small vases to large pieces of furniture— the possibilities are endless. Best of all, decoupage can be learned fairly quickly in just a few steps.

George M. and Edith L. Merkle Memorial Golf Endowment set up in Community Foundation of Wabash County
The family of George M. and Edith L. Merkle are proud to announce the creation of the George M. and Edith L. Merkle Memorial Golf Endowment in the C o m m u n i t y Foundation of
Wabash County. Gene Merkle, George W. Merkle, Marty Merkle Myers, and Mary Jane Merkle Compton created the George M. and Edith L. Merkle Memorial Golf Endowment to memo-
rialize their parent’s achievements. The endowment will provide support to encourage education, learning, participation, play, and involvement in the sport of golf by North Manchester area

youth ages 10 through 14. Examples of programming to be supported by the endowment include golf lessons, summer camps, golf scrambles, junior high school golf team and league development, scholarships for youth golf camps, sponsorship of local youth golf tournaments, and golf equipment. “Golfing is a tremendous way to support the youth of North Manchester,” said Mary Jane Compton, oldest daughter of Sycamore founders George and Edith. She continued, “The game of golf lends itself to advancing youth development by promoting self-confidence, initiative, loyalty, competi-
tiveness, focus, honesty and self-control. An added plus is that it is a healthy way for youth to be outdoors.” “We are very pleased to be a part of this unique initiative which remembers the Merkles and continues their devotion to youth and families, the game of golf, and our community,” said
Patty Grant, Executive Director of the Community Foundation. “I remember George and Edith and what a fun time I had taking summer golf lessons with my friends. Like many others in North Manchester, I am grateful to the family for their years of service in providing such a wonderful
place and sport. We at the Community Foundation look forward to the programming made possible through their children’s generosity and vision to create this endowment.” The Merkle children hope that others will support youth golf programming as well. Contributions (continued on page 25)

er. It has at its core behaviors that are critical to positive development – honesty, integrity, courtesy, and respect,” added the Merkle’s oldest son George. “Our parents would be pleased by the community’s support of this endowment.” George and Edith Merkle opened Sycamore Golf Course in 1961. Their goal for Sycamore was to provide affordable golf to people in the North Manchester area. The Merkles, along with their children Gene, George,
and Marty, and hired students from both Manchester High School and Manchester College worked tirelessly to transform farmland into a golf course. The course originally had only nine holes and golfers were often scratching their clubs on the numerous rocks throughout the course. It took the Merkles and their employees many long days, working sunrise to sunset, to clear trees, pick up rocks, and create a golf course that was playable.
With the creation of the golf course, Manchester College and Manchester High School started golf teams. Industrial leagues were also started at this time, with local businesses such as the Foundry, Peabody Seating Company, and Controls creating the first teams. There was a very active couples league as well as a ladies league that played each week. Golf at Sycamore grew significantly as a summer pastime for many. It was a great place to spend several

hours of leisure time. Sycamore opened with 9 holes in 1961. In the years immediately thereafter it became apparent that another 9 holes would greatly enhance the course. In an effort to make that happen as soon as possible, George and Edith leased a small amount of land immediately east of the course and expanded to an 18hole course. Just a few years later the Merkles purchased a farm to the north, allowing for a redesign of the 18 holes on their own property. The layout changed again and is currently that same basic layout, though the designated numbers of the holes have changed. Another pond was added as well. “We look forward to the programs supported by this endowment,” said Todd Sandow, current Sycamore owner. “Far too many kids
are barred from enjoying golf for financial reasons. The assistance this fund will provide will make a positive impact on many kids.” Currently, the Manchester High School boys’ varsity golf team enjoys Sycamore during their spring season while the girls’ varsity team tees off in the fall. Manchester’s 7th and 8th graders also have a co-ed team that plays at Sycamore in the spring. In addition to the golf teams, there are numerous leagues that play at Sycamore. The Merkles owned and operated Sycamore until 1974 when they sold the course to Jim Draper. In 1993, Draper sold the course to Quinn Griffing and in 2007; current owners Todd and Kathy Sandow took over the helm. For further information about the George M. and Edith

Jodi Barrett was presented with the Young Church Woman Award at the May 3 gathering of Church Women United. The award recognizes the valuable contributions made in the field of ecumenism by the younger sisters in Christ. Since 2002 the recognition has become a way to involve younger women and promote i n t e r- g e n e r a t i o n a l dialogue. Church Women United feels the need to recognize and affirm younger sisters in Christ who are working in many different vineyards of church, school, community, and business. Mrs. Barrett exemplifies these attributes, as she is active as a witness for Christ in her family, church, serving the Fellowship of Churches and throughout the community of North Manchester in business and as a community member. The North Manchester branch of Church Women United met at the Timbercrest Chapel to celebrate May Friendship Day. The focus of the gathering was discovering ways to grow in relationships, minister to one another, and look for opportunities to open wide the doors to
the Huntington County Central Dispatch advising of a possible drowning. Emergency personnel were immediately dispatched to the

scene and divers from the Indiana Conservation Officers and the Huntington County dive team began searching for Laute. Witnesses stated Laute swam out past the roped barrier into deep water. Witnesses could not immediately identify that Laute was in trouble, as drowning victims often times appear to be playing in the water and splashing as if they are okay. Laute, according to witnesses exhibited some of those signs. Once it became evident that Laute was in trouble, witnesses and bystanders attempted unsuccessfully to locate him. I n d i a n a Conservation Officers utilized side scan sonar to locate Laute in 9’ of water at 6:15 p.m. Indiana Conservation Officers want to remind everyone that the use of personal flotation devices should be worn at all times when boating, swimming, fishing or any other water borne recreational activity.

Major of the Year” Award by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) in Charlotte, N.C. at the National AAHPERD Convention. The description of this award as per their web page: Major of the Year-Is given to honor exemplary students majoring in physical education, sport management, athletic training, and the sub-disciplines of kinesiology from across the country through the NASPE Outstanding Major of the Year Program. Nominations for this award are based on several criteria including (among others) scholastic GPA and service to the school or community (a minimum of 3 contributions over at least a 2 yr period). Earlier in the year, Audrey was also awarded a travel grant to attend the Undergraduate Student Leadership Forum at the 2013 American Alliance of Health, Physical E d u c a t i o n , Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) National Convention (where she received the “Outstanding Major of the Year” Award). As only two grants were awarded by the Indiana Alliance for Health, Physical E d u c a t i o n , Recreation and Dance (IAHPERD) in the State of Indiana, this was a great honor. Audrey helped to lead the student delegation and helped her Purdue professors present on the “Physical Best” program (among other presentations) at the convention. Audrey graduated from Purdue University on May 12,
with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Safety Education and Physical Education (double major). While at Purdue, she was the President/President Emeritus of the HK Club for three years, was on the Indiana (CFP) Council of Future Professionals (Co-President 20122013), on the National AAHPERD-CFP Board, and on the Servant Council at the Purdue Christian Campus House. She was a 2008 graduate of Manchester High School. Audrey is the daughter of Joe and Carol Johnson.
