Miami County United Way and Corporate Social Responsibility

By Melissa Hicks United Way of Miami County Board Member

What if I told you there is a proven business strategy that positively impacts your bottom line, attracts new employees, and increases customer loyalty? Given today’s tight labor market and fierce competition for customers, you’d be crazy not to at least consider it, right? Chances are you’ve heard of corporate social responsibility (CSR). However, you might not realize that in today’s competitive marketplace, it is more than a “nice thing to do.” There is a strong business case for CSR, and it packs a punch in terms of a Melissa Hicks company’s overall performance. According to Investopedia, corporate social responsibility is “a self-regulating business model that helps a company be socially accountable to itself, its stakeholders, and the public.” It’s not by chance that this definition is provided by the world’s leading source for financial content on the web. You see, investors and lenders increasingly consider a company’s corporate citizenship as a performance metric. Likewise, today’s consumers demand that the brands they buy—and work for—have a strong social impact.

Recognizing the increasing significance of social impact among all key stakeholders, a variety of companies have started to publish a CSR annual report that communicates their goals, actions, and quantifiable impact. A few examples are the Walt Disney Company, CVS Pharmacy, and Comcast NBCUniversal.

ity pertains to making financial business decisions that are ethical and positively impact the environment and society.

The Business Case for Corporate Social Responsibility CSR positively impacts a company in a number of ways. First, there is an immediate impact on current employee engagement and productivity. Types of Social Impact Initiatives A recent survey released by Deloitte found that Corporate citizenship takes on many forms, but “when brands demonstrate humanity, employees are 2.6 times more likely to feel motivated at the purpose is the same: to be a positive force in work.” According to Forbes, “CSR’s internal the world. How to a CSR Initiative Companies of all sizes use different criteria to select the CSR effort that is best for them. Some companies choose a CSR initiative that aligns with their corporate mission or purpose. For example, a pet food manufacturer might choose to support animal shelters. Other businesses focus on meeting the needs of the community where employees live and work. Local efforts can be hands-on such as dedicating a day for employees to volunteer at a local food bank or participate in a community cleanup, or monetary where the company and/or employees donate money to a specific cause. The United Way of Miami County makes both types of localized efforts easy to implement. The nonprofit organization recently kicked off its 2021 “United for Good” campaign and is welcoming the support of industrial companies and businesses of all sizes. “Corporate social responsibility is alive and strong in our community with 643 companies and businesses supporting the United Way of Miami County,” shared Debi Wallick, Executive Director of the United Way. “Participating employers love the fact that our organization is 100 percent focused on the local community and that we handle

all of the logistics. Participation is turnkey and scalable to the size of the business.” To learn more about incorporating the United Way of Miami County into your CSR initiatives, contact Debi Wallick at debiw@uwmiamip.org or call 765-473-4240. Janet Louise Griffith (nee Knott), 95 Janet Louise Griffith (nee Knott) passed away peacefully Oct. 14, 2021, at the age of 95 in her home at 3015 S. Frances Slocum Trail in Peru, Indiana. Janet was born to Austin and Thelma Knott (nee Lees) in Peru, Indiana, Sept 12, 1926. She graduated from George Washington High School in 1944. Janet married the late Gerald C. Griffith in 1947, and they lived together in Indiana, Ohio, and Tennessee for 41 years until Gerald passed away in 1988. Janet is survived by her daughter Patti Gallagher and husband John of Toledo, Ohio; son, David Griffith and wife Julie of Perrysburg, Ohio; daughter, Suzanne Prestien and husband Mark of New Wilmington, Pennsylvania; son, Andy Griffith and wife Sara of Roanoke, Virginia; daughter, Kathleen Griffith of Peru, Indiana; daughter, Amy Darland and husband Dick of Peru, Indiana, and sister Joyce Mills of Columbus, Indiana. She also leaves behind grandchildren: David Griffith, Gerald “Charlie” Griffith, Patrick Griffith, Emma Prestien, Reece Griffith, Mark “Austin” Griffith, Ashlee Martin, and Laurel Darland, as well as great grandchildren Charlotte, Alex, Miles and Cole Griffith and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Janet was predeceased by her husband and parents, brother Roy Knott, brother-in-law John Mills, daughter-inlaw Lois Griffith (nee Stotts), and her beloved son Reece Griffith. Janet Louise – “Lou” to her husband

and children -- loved learning, reading, puzzles and all manner of problems, and up until her later years, she was not to be found without a new book and a crossword or crypto quote puzzle close at hand. Janet’s skill and intelligence would have shone in whatever endeavor she chose as her life’s calling: her calling came to be her family. She could mend a life-threatening skinned knee with a hidden smile, Bactine and a Band-Aid. She would miraculously fix what a child thought was a wellhidden heart break or disappointment with a delicious plate of spaghetti and meat balls or chocolate chip cookies. She could get seven kids to seven different functions in seven different locations at the same time, on time. She could remedy, “Mom, it hurts when I do this,” with a quick “Don’t do that” and all was well. She could sew you a new outfit for a dance as easily as she could swat your butt with a wooden spoon for swearing. The wooden spoon or yard stick thing was always kind of a joke, as she was never really feared. She didn’t need to be because she was respected and loved by all who knew her well and by her family most of all. She will be missed in this world and cherished in the next. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Janet Louise Griffith will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday Oct. 22, 2021, at St. Charles Catholic Church, 58 W. Fifth St., Peru, Indiana, with Rev. Kyle Nederer officiating. Burial will be in the St. Charles Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends will gather from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021, at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru. She graduated from Peru High School in 1961. She worked at Square D for a short time before starting her career as a clerk for the C&O railroad. Pam is survived by her children, Patty Branaman of Denver, Colorado; Randy Branaman of Peru, Indiana; Jerome Emery of Twelve Mile, Indiana; Karee (Branaman) Buffin (husband Tony) of Springport, Indiana; her grandchildren, JayCe Solek, Kyrie Branaman, Alex Davidson, her sister Ronnie (husband Howard) Green, her brother Pete Longenecker, her loving aunt Pat Moore and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. Her extended family was also important to her including Julie and Rob Schroder, Dale and Kim Emery, Gladys Maina and Simon Mungai. Her parents and her sister Danielle (Longenecker) Pegg raced ahead of her to heaven and are reunited with her once again. Funeral Services for Pam were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021, at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 W. Main St., Peru, Indiana, with Chaplain Phil Rogers officiating. Burial followed in Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru. Family and Friends called from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 15, 2021, at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home.
