Construction at PHS continues, time capsule found By Michelle Boswell mboswell@thepaperofmiami.com Expansion construction continues at Peru High School with everything running on schedule. This, along with the discovery of a time capsule from 1969 has Peru High School Principal, Paul Frye, happy with the project so far. Frye said there haven’t been many problems with the project so far, inside or outside of the school. “The biggest one would just be on a few occasions, the noise. We have emptied out Senior Hall, so people are a little further away from the construction. When they have the jackhammer going, it gets kind of loud. The company, Brown and Brown, has been really good and helpful and we meet every other Tuesday. If I have concerns, they try to solve any problems. They try to keep the bigger stuff for when we aren’t here, like Fall break. While dealing with the occasional noise, the mess outside of the building, and teachers moved to other halls, Frye feels in the end everyone, including taxpayers, will benefit from the expansion. “The expansion is going to benefit the students because our enrollment has been decreasing in size and it’s been difficult for the school system and taxpayers to try and keep both buildings up to par as far as maintenance and redoing things. While I certainly want the seventh and eighth graders to have their own identity, as a taxpayer and as an educator I thought it was the best move. Even though this is the new high school for those who have been around Peru for a long time, it’s 50 years old. If you look around, there are updates that need to be done. I think getting them all in the same building so they can focus on financing and redoing one building instead of two is a benefit. I think that the new graduation pathways that our seniors have to follow, getting more teachers under one roof and getting use of our resources for our teachers will benefit the younger kids and help with graduation in the end,” Frye explained. The changes being made at Peru High School include an addition to the west side of the building (which will make the school more secure for staff and students), remodeling classrooms and adding two new science rooms. “They are building a secure entryway, which with our most recent threat assessment, is definitely a need for this building. Most of our other buildings are more secure as far as when visitors sign in. They’re in a fishbowl and until you find out who they are and where they are going, they are isolated. When they’re beeped in here (PHS), they can literally be any where before we can get to them. This will be great for the safety of our students. All visitors will have to enter through the front doors, but students do not have to.

The top right photo is the time capsule found in the cornerstone of PHS. In the bottom photo are some of the itmes found inside the time capsule at PHS. Photos by Michelle Boswell We will have the entrances staffed like we usually do, and the doors will be unlocked. Any parent or visitor should expect to enter on the Broadway side of the building,” Frye said. Frye added there will be additional parking on the west side of the building for visitors. With the construction happening on the west side of the school where many parents dropped off their children for the school day, concerns over morning congestion were a given for all involved. “It actually has been going better than we thought it would. Parents have been very, very cooperative. The

PHS only issue we have is we’ll get a line of cars behind some of our student parking and it kind of stagnates them from backing up and getting out, but everyone has really been listening to directions and we are pleased. I think next year we’ll have a bus drop off down here at the end from the junior high and there will be less traffic. I think we’ll be in better shape,” Frye said. A year-long project can seem like a long time for those in the midst of the construction, but Frye is positive the wait will be worth it because of the expected end result. “Right now, this is a building project designed to mainly accept the seventh and eighth grade into this building. All of the seventh and eighth grade rooms will be redone. Where we’re sitting now (front office) is going to be a couple of new science rooms so we’re looking forward to that. I’m really looking forward to the office staff having that secure entrance. It will take a lot of worries off of us. It doesn’t take all the worries away, but it will be a lot more manageable, and you know who is in the building and where they are and that will make things a lot easier. We devote a lot of resources to safety and security at Peru Community Schools and I wish we could spend that on other things, but it’s obviously needed right now so we will continue to do so,” he said. While the project will take a year to complete, changes for the front office staff will happen as soon as December. “This is a year-long project, and the company has assured us they are on track. So come December, my office staff will be able to move out into the new office area and they (Brown and Brown) will begin remodeling in here (current front office). All the teachers in this wing (Senior Hall located in the lower west wing) were relocated last year and they are going to transition into fixing these rooms up and then redoing this whole area. There will be a nicer guidance suite in the back of us which is definitely needed. A lot of kids have high needs and our counselors’ offices are tiny. We will be glad to get them some more room so they can be more efficient and be a little more confidential. The walls, even in my office, are temporary walls and with my deep voice, they can hear me right through them. You wouldn’t want that in a counseling situation where there are some privacy concerns. I’m thankful for that, looking forward to that for the kids and looking forward to it being over so

continued from Page 1 everybody can get back to normal,” Frye shared. In any construction project, surprises can happen, but luckily the surprise discovered at PHS is an exciting one. “We did discover a time capsule in the cornerstone in the front of the building. We are getting ready to make a new one and we’re going to put all the stuff we found back in it and then we’re going to add our own stuff. The capsule has to be bronzed and sealed so it doesn’t get weathered. Although the cornerstone says 1970, items included in the time capsule were from 1969,” said Frye. Some items in the time capsule were a 1969 Peruvian Newspaper (the

school newspaper), the senior edition; a copy of the June 25, 1969, edition of the Peru Tribune with a story about the time capsule being placed in the cornerstone; minted coins from 1969; a photograph with names of the Peru School Board and a parent-teacher association calendar. According to the article printed in the local newspaper, the “Masonic ceremony was performed by the Grand Lodge of Indiana, F. & A.M., and was presided over by Grand Master Robert P. Joyce. The invocation was given by the Rt. Rev. Arthur A. Sego of St. Charles Catholic Church. The Rev. Barney Stephens,

pastor of the First Christian Church, offered the benediction. Music was provided by the Peru High School Brass Ensemble, under the direction of James Noble. The Masonic ceremony included the actual laying of the stone permanently as no temporary of symbolic laying of the stone is permitted under Masonic Law. It was the first time the Masons conducted a cornerstone laying since 1909 at the Miami County Courthouse.” Although they haven’t determined all the items that will be put into the new time capsule, Principal Frye said they do have some items in mind for their time cap-

THE PAPER Jerry Owen Webster, 83

Jerry Owen Webster, 83, Macy, Indiana, passed away at 3:35 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021, at his residence. Born at Dukes Hospital in Peru, Indiana, Jan. 10, 1938, he was the son of Berton Owen Webster and Mildred Josephine Madary (Webster) Austin and was the grandson of Bert Webster and Maude Waymire Webster. Jerry was a 1956 graduate of Peru High School where he was active as a yell leader, member of the choir, and a member of the first swing choir under the direction of Jim Noble. Jerry was also very active in plays, and music school productions. After one year of college, Jerry was drafted into the United States Army. Jerry started a floral business in an old hip roof building willed to him by an aunt. Along with his dad, Berty, they renovated the building into a silk floral house and then added fresh flowers and plants. Many parties, weddings and school orders kept them busy and growing, along with funerals and requests for special events. Within one year, they were doing weddings (sometimes two each week), providing the flowers, decorations, and cakes. The one business soon split into two: one floral and setups, and the other a complete food and rental service. Jo’s Bakery later took off, providing the same services for party rentals and supplies as the flower business continued to grow. The floral work tripled, and Jerry was approached about a shop in Rochester. Dorothy Irene Baird and her son, David, led the task of opening the shop across from the airport in Rochester. Always keeping a keen eye and looking at the current trends, Jerry attended professional design and style shows, home shows, and many

more to increase the potential of the business. Then came the begging call of the Miami County area, “Please bring your style and design to our area.” Within six months, it was ready with a grand opening one week before Mother’s Day. As the business trended more towards Peru, the shops closed in Rochester and Macy. Webster’s Florist operated in Peru since 1975 and continues to provide service to Miami County. The business was even able to stay open and operate after a devastating fire Sept. 28, 2000, and then opening the new building and retail shop in May 2001, just in time again for Mother’s Day. Jerry loved all of his business friendships and working with the community, especially providing flowers for the Honeywell Center in Wabash for many different functions over the years. Mr. Webster retired in 2020, and Jerry’s legacy, Webster’s Florist, survives under the managing eye of longtime business partner, David L. Baird, Macy; and the phenomenal staff who will continue the great traditions of providing beauty, style, and great service to all of Miami County and surrounding areas. Also surviving are several cousins, including Jerry’s only first cousin, William P. Madary III, Indianapolis. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver. Burial will follow in Fulton Cemetery, Fulton, Indiana. Visitation was from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021, and will also be one hour prior to the service Wednesday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Fulton Cemetery, Kindred Hospice, or The Honeywell Foundation. McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana, has been entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be sent online at www.mcclainfh.com.
